What Does 500 Years of Wine History Taste Like? With Roman Aujoulat from Chateau La Nerthe
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Wined Up Podcast, we sit down with Roman Aujoulat from Château La Nerthe in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. One of the Rhône Valley’s most historic estates to unpack what tradition really means when you’re the next generation helping carry it forward. Roman grew up in the Rhône surrounded by wine at the dinner table, but stepping into a role representing one of the region’s benchmark estates still came with challenge and trepidation. From that first emotional Loire Valley Chardonnay moment that pulled him into wine, to travelling the world pouring Châteauneuf-du-Pape in places like Sydney, this conversation moves between personal story and deep regional insight in the best possible way. Along the way we explore why Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows up to 18 grape varieties, how blending gives growers freedom in a changing climate, and why Grenache still quietly shapes the identity of the region. Roman also shares the lesser-known history behind Château La Nerthe itself, including Roman amphitheatre stones hidden in the cellar walls and sealed wartime cellars rediscovered decades later. We taste through Rhône whites, Beaujolais Gamay, Châteauneuf-du-Pape whites and mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds while talking about ageing windows, vintage expression, and what it means to evolve a historic estate without losing its soul. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 – “You don’t need to be a pro to enjoy wine”00:00:18 – Ice Breaker 00:04:00 – What Châteauneuf-du-Pape pairs best with at the table 00:05:42 – First tasting: Rhône white blend from La Nerthe 00:08:02 – Growing up with wine in the Rhône Valley 00:10:00 – Getting the call to represent La Nerthe 00:10:36 – What makes Rhône… Rhône? 00:12:39 – Robert Parker and global fame for Châteauneuf-du-Pape 00:13:00 – Why Châteauneuf-du-Pape allows 13 (or 18) grapes 00:16:27 – Why vintage variation matters more than consistency here 00:17:03 – The Richard family story: wine in Paris 140 years ago 00:20:25 – Second tasting: Beaujolais Gamay surprise 00:23:59 – How Château La Nerthe survived five centuries 00:26:21 – Phylloxera, rootstocks and saving the vineyards 00:29:22 – Hidden Roman stones and sealed WWII cellar stories 00:34:54 – What goes into white Châteauneuf-du-Pape 00:36:18 – How white Rhône wines age (and when to drink them) 00:48:58 – Modern vs old-school La Nerthe winemaking styles 00:49:06 – Mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds and ageing windows 00:57:22 – Final reflections + visiting Château La Nerthe 👉 Subscribe to @thewinedup and tell us below: What’s your favourite Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Is Self-Care an Ingredient in Making Wine? With Dan Eggleton from Ben Murray Wines
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Wined Up Podcast, we sit down with Dan Eggleton from Ben Murray Wines in the Barossa to talk about something the wine world rarely talks about. The pressure behind the label, the reality facing boutique producers right now, and why sometimes stepping back is the bravest decision you can make.Dan shares what led him to pause a vintage after nearly 30 years of making wine, how health and timing collided with a tough season, and what it felt like emotionally to draw that line. There’s honesty here about identity, resilience, and what happens when passion and practicality start pulling in different directions.Along the way we taste through new-release Mataro from Marananga, talk Barossa sub-regions, vineyard expression, and why some grapes quietly disappear into blends instead of standing on their own. There’s also stories from the early Ben Murray days, the growers who shaped the journey, and a moment involving a 1943 Madeira that reminds you why wine matters in the first place. But more than anything, this episode opens up a bigger conversation — about mental health in agriculture, in wine, and in industries where people are expected to just keep pushing through. If you’ve ever wondered what really goes on behind a vintage decision, this one’s worth settling in for.⏱️ Chapters00:00 Preview 00:00:49 Intro - Is self-care an ingredient in making wine? 00:02:17 The Wined Up Ice Breaker with Dan Eggleton00:06:19 Ben Murray Wines – New Releases 00:06:48 Why Ben Murray released a straight Mataro 00:09:15 What makes Marananga different in the Barossa 00:15:09 The decision not to make a vintage 00:17:00 When stepping back is harder than making wine 00:20:00 Why boutique winemakers across Australia are reassessing 00:30:20 Ben Murray Barossa and Marananga Shiraz00:34:11 Mental Health and Mateship Breakfasts00:47:33 What gives hope for the future of wine culture00:49:51 Ben Murray Anima Grenache 00:54:48 Ben Murray Reserve Shiraz👉 Subscribe to @thewinedup and tell us on what is your favourite Ben Murray wine? Aldi Blackstone Wine: Hidden Gems or Just Cheap Bottles?
Send us Fan MailMost of us love wine… but let’s be honest — not all of us can open $80 bottles every week. So today on The Wined Up Podcast, we ask a question that’s probably crossed every wine drinker’s mind while walking past the supermarket aisle: Is Aldi wine actually good value… or is it just cheap wine? After seeing the hype online (and struggling to even find bottles because they kept selling out), Trent dives into Aldi’s Blackstone Paddock range — a lineup designed to deliver regional Australian styles without the usual price tag. This isn’t a technical wine review. It’s a real-world test: what happens when wine passion meets cost-of-living reality? From a Margaret River Chardonnay to a Tasmanian Pinot Noir and a Barossa Shiraz, the goal is simple — figure out whether these wines genuinely punch above their weight and where they actually fit into everyday life. Because sometimes the best wine isn’t the most expensive one… it’s the one that makes Tuesday night feel like Friday. 🍷 Key Moments The real definition of “value wine” (not just cheap wine)Why rising costs are changing how we buy wineThe Aldi hype — and why bottles were selling out everywhereMargaret River Chardonnay first impressions + perfect food matchThe surprise standout: Tasmanian Pinot NoirBarossa Shiraz rethinking what supermarket Shiraz can beHonest pricing test: what these wines feel like they should costReal-life wine awards: weeknight, dinner party & best value winnerBlind-pour test — would friends guess the price?⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Aldi wine — value or just cheap? 00:05 The Wined Up intro + why this episode exists 00:45 Cost of living & redefining wine value 01:20 What the Blackstone range actually is 02:30 Margaret River Chardonnay tasting 04:30 Food pairing thinking in real time 05:00 Tasmanian Pinot Noir surprise 06:30 Why this Pinot overdelivers 07:00 Barossa Shiraz tasting 08:10 BBQ wine vs dinner party wine 09:00 Real-life wine awards 09:45 Final verdict: Aldi value test Subscribe to @thewinedup and comment on what’s the best value wine you’ve ever discovered? What Wine Goes With Frangos Portuguese Chicken?
Send us Fan MailWhat wine actually works with Frangos Portuguese chicken? Today we put it to the test. Frangos is one of Sydney’s most loved Portuguese chicken spots, famous for its charcoal grilled chicken, smoky flavours, and that iconic chilli sauce. The challenge is real. You have spice, char, smoke, and white meat all on the same plate, and that can ruin the wrong wine fast. In this episode, we take on a proper wine pairing challenge with Frangos. We taste the chicken first, then try two wines side by side to see what really works. One is a Portuguese Vinho Verde, lightly spritzy, fresh, and savoury. The other is an Australian Albariño inspired by Spain and Portugal, with more body and fruit weight. We break down acidity, texture, alcohol level, and how chilli heat changes the way wine tastes. This is not about fancy tasting notes or wine snob language. We talk honestly about what works, what does not, and why some wines clash with spice. If you love Frangos, Portuguese chicken, or just want to know what wine to drink with spicy food, this video is for you. We also talk Portuguese wine basics, why Vinho Verde is underrated, and how to think about wine pairing using texture and weight, not just flavour. Exploring Pizzini Wines: Beyond Prosecco
Send us Fan MailWhen most people hear Pizzini Wines, they think Prosecco, and honestly, so did I. But this episode completely flipped that idea on its head. Today on The Wine Up Podcast, Trent and I dive deep into Pizzini Wines from Victoria’s King Valley and discover just how much more there is beyond the bubbles. We explore Italian grape varieties grown in Australian soil, from Sangiovese and Nebbiolo to a surprisingly complex Pinot Grigio and a bold, blended red that brings Italy and Australia together in one glass. We talk about why King Valley is known as Little Italy, how Pizzini’s Italian heritage shapes their winemaking, and what makes their wines savoury, layered, and food-friendly rather than simple and fruit-forward. You’ll hear honest tasting notes, real pricing, and our genuine reactions as we work through four standout wines, including Prosecco, Attento Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, and Il Barone. This is not a polished sales pitch. It’s an unfiltered wine conversation for people who want to drink better, try new styles, and actually understand what’s in their glass. If you love Italian wine, Australian wine, or you’ve only ever tried Prosecco from Pizzini, this episode will change how you see the brand. Blind Tasting Valli Pinot Noir | Valli Wines from Otago New Zealand
Send us Fan MailWelcome back to The Wined Up. In this episode, we’re diving unapologetically unfiltered into one of New Zealand’s most exciting wine regions, Otago, with a blind tasting of Valli Wine’s Pinot Noirs from three very different sub regions. We line up Bendigo, Gibbston, and Waitaki without knowing what’s in the glass, focusing purely on texture, acidity, fruit, and how terroir really shows up in Pinot Noir. The big reveal happens later in the episode, and trust me, the results surprised even us.Before we get stuck into the reds, we start with a fresh and textured Pinot Gris and talk about how wine trends are shifting, especially in Australia. Heavy Shiraz is taking a back seat as more drinkers lean toward lighter, fresher styles like Pinot Noir, Prosecco, and spritz style wines. We also break down why Gen Z and Millennials are driving this change and what that means for the future of wine.We also sit down for our Thoughts of the Week, where we unpack five different types of acid in wine and how each one affects balance, freshness, and drinkability. If you’re curious about Otago wines, blind tasting, or how to actually taste Pinot Noir with confidence, this episode is for you. Christmas Pudding Wine Pairing Challenge + Best Wine Gifts
Send us Fan MailIn this festive episode of The Wined Up Podcast, we take on one of the hardest food and wine challenges of all time: what actually pairs with Christmas pudding. Rich, brandy-soaked, packed with dried fruit, suet, spice, and finished with custard, Christmas pudding is notorious for overpowering wine — so we put it to the test properly. We taste what claims to be Australia’s No.1 Christmas pudding from The Pudding Lady in Newcastle, then compare two classic dessert wines: an aged 2005 Château Coutet Sauternes and a Seppeltsfield DP63 Grand Muscat from Rutherglen. We taste each wine on its own and with the pudding to see what works, what doesn’t, and whether sweet wine is even the right answer.Along the way, we share Fast Five Fun Facts about Christmas pudding, talk Christmas wine gift ideas, and debate everything from cork boxes and wine books to blending workshops and advent calendars. If you’re searching for the best wine to pair with Christmas pudding, or looking for thoughtful wine gift ideas for the holidays, this episode goes beyond textbook rules with honest, practical insights.Subscribe to @thewinedup and comment 👇What do you pair with Christmas pudding — wine, brandy, or something else?Follow Us on Instagram (The.Wined.Up) or TikTok (@thewinedup ).Visit our website Home - The Wined Up Podcast or email us at [email protected]:00:00 Introduction to Suet and Christmas Pudding01:04 Wine Pairing Challenge Announcement01:37 Thoughts of the Week: Christmas Gifts04:21 Advent Calendar and Wine Thoughts06:16 Wine Pouring Techniques09:34 Christmas Pudding and Wine Pairing10:49 Introduction to the Pudding11:09 Serving the Pudding11:31 Tasting the Pudding11:46 Explaining the Ingredients13:43 Wine Pairing Challenge15:14 Fast Five Fun Facts about Christmas Pudding16:58 Wine and Pudding Pairing Results19:18 Gift Giving Time22:56 Final Thoughts and Farewell #christmaspudding #winepairing #dessertwine #christmaswine #winechallenge #winegifts #sauternes #rutherglenmuscat #wineeducation #thewineduppodcastFollow Us on YouTube (@TheWinedUp), Instagram (The.Wined.Up), Tik Tok (@TheWinedUp), Spotify (The Wined Up), Amazon Music ( TheWinedUp), and Apple Podcasts (The Wined Up). Testing Coravin Timeless and Sparkling with Greg Lambrecht
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Wined Up Podcast, we sit down with Greg Lambrecht, the founder and inventor of Coravin, to explore something many wine drinkers never talk about enough, which is the emotional bond we form with wine. Greg explains how memories, people and places shape the way a single glass can stay with us for years. We also cover how Coravin changed the way we taste wine by letting us explore more variety without ever opening a bottle. We walk through Greg’s full story, from early prototypes to the first time he realised he could taste ten wines in one night without wasting any of them. We also dig into how the Timeless and Sparkling systems work, why cork resealing matters, how pressure is restored in sparkling bottles and why this design took years to perfect. Then we put Coravin to the test in a triangle blind tasting. We compare preserved wines against freshly opened bottles, both still and sparkling, to see whether there is any real difference. We also talk through common myths like the three second screw cap rule, vacuum pumps, decanter lids and gas sprays, and what actually holds up in the real world. If you want to understand wine preservation better, or you are curious about whether Coravin genuinely works, this episode goes deeper than most reviews. Stick around for the full tasting and the results, because they surprised both of us.Subscribe to @thewinedup and comment on your experience with the Coravin products👇Check out the Coravin range of Wine Preservation Products at https://www.coravin.com.auChapters:00:00 The Emotional Connection to Wine00:56 Introducing Greg Lambert and Coravin02:37 Memorable Wine Moments07:41 The Journey to Creating Coravin17:24 The Coravin Sparkling System28:48 Introduction to Screw Cap Adapter29:36 Debunking the Three-Second Rule30:33 Addressing Bubbles and Cork Resealing31:34 Blind Tasting Setup35:03 Blind Tasting Results and Discussion45:37 Comparing Wine Preservation Systems49:56 The Coravin Logo and Future Innovations55:32 Conclusion and Final Thoughts#coravin #coravintimeless #coravinsparkling #greglambrecht #winepreservation #winegadgets #winetastingpodcast #sparklingwinetest #blindtastingwine #triangletestwine #winetechnology #winetoolsreview #wineeducation #thewineduppodcast #emotionalconnectiontowine #winestories #champagnepreservation #stillwinepreservation #winecollectortools #tastemultiplewines #thewinedup #podcast #winepodcast #interview #wineFollow Us on YouTube (@TheWinedUp), Instagram (The.Wined.Up), Tik Tok (@TheWinedUp), Spotify (The Wined Up), Amazon Music ( TheWinedUp), and Apple Podcasts (The Wined Up). Making Great Wines Affordable with Winemaker Douglas Neal
Send us Fan MailIn this episode of The Wined Up, we sit down with Douglas Neal, a winemaker with decades of experience across Australia, Burgundy, Bordeaux and California. From the first pour, it was clear Doug is on a real mission making great wines accessible again. We talk about rising costs in the wine world, why younger drinkers are being priced out, and why the industry is struggling to balance quality with affordability. Doug breaks down the actual cost pressures on growers, barrels, labour and fruit sourcing, and explains why so many premium bottles have become unreachable for everyday drinkers. We dive into Shiraz in a big way. Doug talks about why Shiraz is Australia’s most climate suited grape, how it handles heat better than Pinot, and how multi regional blends can still make compelling and consistent wines at fair prices. He explains why he avoids underripe styles, how he builds texture and savoury notes without green stem tannin, and why rocky soils in regions like Pyrenees, Blewitt Springs and Murrumbateman matter so much.We also explore his Chardonnay work with Gaffy and Neal, the differences between clones, the balance of creaminess and acidity, and why oak should support, not dominate. Doug shares insights from years designing barrels, working with cooperages, and testing forests and grain sizes to create finesse and structure.Beyond the technical side, we talk about keeping wines under one hundred dollars, the sweet spot for younger drinkers, the pressure on wineries, the future of Australian wine, and the importance of over delivering with every bottle.Thank you Doug for the great chat! Uncovering the Beauty of Bloom
Send us Fan MailIn this episode we finally cracked open a bottle we've been saving for years – the 2015 Bloom Chardonnay from Brash Higgins! This unique wine, grown in the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, has been aged to perfection in white Burgundy barrels and promises a flavour profile unlike any other. From honey and toffee apples to nutty whiffs and even a hint of curry powder, this wine is a sensory adventure. We look at Brad Hickey, the innovative winemaker behind Brash Higgins. Born in Chicago, Brad's journey took him from Paris to New York, where he honed his skills as a sommelier. In 2007, he ventured to Australia, teaming up with Chris Ringland and meeting his partner, Nicole Thorpe. Together, they experimented with drought-resistant varietals, pioneering unique wines like Nero d'Avola in amphora, gordo grape variety for his Zibbibo and Riesling semillon blend.Brad's approach is all about pushing boundaries and challenging traditional winemaking. He explores unconventional grapes and techniques, embodying the spirit of innovation. His wines reflect a passion for experimentation and a willingness to challenge the status quo.For thoughts of the week, Jason is still thinking about wine fridge regret and starting to look at offsite wine cellar options. Trent is addressing the elephant in the room by talking about the health impacts of wine.Subscribe to @TheWinedUp and comment below on whether you have tried a Bloom chardonnay and whether you are a lover or a hater?Chapters:0:00 Introduction0:30 - Thought of the Week (Trent) – What is the impact of wine to our health4:12 - Thought of the Week (Jason) – Should I use a managed wine cellar service?11:40 - Today's Episode – What is the Brash Higgins Bloom Chardonnay12:35 - About Brash Higgins \ Brad Hickey15:05 – The Bloom backstory20:20 – Corkscrew Rating21:00 - The Wined Up Conclusion#winehealth #wineark #managedwinecellar #brashhiggins #bradhickey #bloomchardonnay #bloom #mclarenvale #vinjaune #jura #merrickwatts #wine #winetalk #winechat #winepodcast #thewinedup #thewineduppodcast #podcastThe content in this episode are our own personal experiences and opinions.
