    Episode 46: Count Dooku

War! The Republic is crumbling under attacks by the ruthless darklord, Count Dooku. There are heroes on both sides. Evil is everywhere. (You know, because it's Ravenloft.)In a stunning move, Count Dooku has delved into the secret archives of the heretical Sith and summoned Sidious, the archdevil at the heart of their cult.As Dooku and his fiendish patron play both sides of the war against one another, a group of heavily armed transients must decide how best to tip the scales...Yes, we are kicking off Star Wars Summer with COUNT DOOKU! Topics discussed include:The animated shorts you need to watch if you have no idea why we thought Sneery McSneers-A-Lot would make for a compelling darklord, and a summary of them if you don't have time to check them out;The D&D versions of the droid and clone armies (no, the clones don't involve the clone spell, although we did think about it);An AU if you would rather make Dooku the center of a paranoid political conspiracy thriller than a war story; Our greatest challenge yet for incorporating the older material;and more! The full write-up for the Midrim is available for free on DM's Guild: dmsguild.com/en/product/567128/A-Ravenloft-Far-Far-Away--Count-Drakul?preview=1Timestamps0:00 Introduction8:17 The Lord37:44 The Land56:13 Dread Possibilities1:19:21 Parting thoughts1:35:51 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Death (minor), slavery (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo VinuelaChopin Etude Op. 25, No. 12 in C Minor: “Ocean” (darklord theme), performed by Edward NeemanChopin Nocturne in F Minor, Op. 55 No. 1 (land theme), performed by Luke FaulknerRachmaninoff Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Bonus Episode 7: May the Fourth (Star Wars Prologue)

It is a period of Star Wars. Nerdy podcasters, striking from a Maryland living room, have recorded their first installment about the evil Imperium of the Mists.During the episode, the Kolars managed to include overall plans for the demiplane's strangest Mist cluster, the STELLAR ARCHIPELAGO, a group of four domains isolated from one another yet united by powerful similarities.Harried by the household's excitable cats, the Kolars race to their hosting platform, sharing their plans to streamline the summer episodes and bring clarity to the listeners....If by this point you're saying "Kolars, please be normal and tell us what this episode is," we're establishing the overall ground rules for the shared Star Wars Mist cluster that will be the subject of our next four episodes. Topics discussed include:How we're planning to adapt a galactic space fantasy saga to a non-galactic, non-space fantasy setting without necessarily making it Spelljammer; The role of Palpatine, who is arguably the evil axis mundi of Star Wars but is inarguably living his best non-tormented life;Adapting Jedi and Sith without coming up with a whole new monk or paladin subclass;Which darklord we're planning to tackle first, since our teaser at the end of the last episode was just "Star Wars!";and more! All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo VinuelaThe Wonderful World of Darklords logo was designed by Halite Jones, whom you can find on Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.tumblr.com/halite-jones and http://www.instagram.com/insta_haliteContact us on:Gmail: [email protected]: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsTumblr: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsPatreon: www.patreon.com/WonderfulWorldofDarklordsYouTube: @wonderfulworldofdarklord

    Episode 45: KPop Demon Hunters

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! It's our annual non-Disney episode, and this year, what could we choose except the movie that soundly ate Disney's lunch? There's a TON of terrific overlap between KPop Demon Hunters and D&D/Ravenloft, from "group of heavily armed people who kick supernatural butt through the power of song" to "villains who get pulled into a special hell of their own creation and also of a dark power's creation," but it's also grounded specifically in the 21st century pop music scene, which is...decidedly not terrific overlap. Like Huntr/x, though, Kolars don't quit. Topics discussed include:Why we went with Jinu as our darklord instead of Gwi-Ma or Celine (don't worry, we have an AU for darklord Celine if you hate her unconditionally and want Jinu and Rumi to kiss); How Celine's ethos can make everything worse even if you don't have her as the darklord, and can provide a reason for Huntr/x to have a non-adventurer cover identity in the process; The OG domain that tackled the theme of intrusive thoughts, guilt, and shame, and why KPop Demon Hunters does it better (it's partly the lack of kender);Alternate rules to make combat more cinematic and to incorporate Huntri/x style themes of teamwork into your party;and more! The full write-up for Golden City is available for free on DM's Guild: dmsguild.com/en/product/562849/Bardcore-Demon-Slayers-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?preview=1Our Listener's Choice poll is available through the end of April: https://www.patreon.com/posts/listeners-choice-154445268Timestamps0:00 Introduction4:14 The Lord31:25 The Land58:25 Dread Possibilities1:30:21 Aging up (sexual content, drugs, gaslighting, emotional abuse, eating disorders, general depression ickiness)1:36:46 Aging up ends1:41:33 Parting thoughts2:05:06 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Gaslighting (major), parasocial grooming (moderate), emotional abuse (moderate), psychological torture (moderate), death (minor), fire (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Book Club of Dread After Dark is LIVE!

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords...after dark. You donated $600 to the Capital Area Food Bank, and we're finally delivering on the promised rewards, starting with the anthology that has someone's X-rated Roger Rabbit fanfic: Hot Blood Volume 4: Seeds of Fear. Much like Tower of Doom, this one is so ear-scorchingly filthy that we don't want it showing up on our main feed, so we're making it available for free on our Patreon instead: www.patreon.com/wonderfulworldofdarklords We do not bleep the swear words in this one; it is not remotely safe for...well, anything. You have been warned. The episoide is here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/book-club-of-of-154194951Our beverage is Pink Panty-Dropper Punch. For the mocktail version, make pink lemonade from concentrate using Sprite instead of water (if you can only find regular lemonade, add grenadine to make it pink). For the cocktail version, use beer instead of water or Sprite and/or add vodka to taste.Thank you for listening, and happy gaming! The Wonderful World of Darklords logo was designed by Halite Jones, whom you can find on Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.tumblr.com/halite-draw and http://www.instagram.com/insta_haliteContact us on:Gmail: [email protected]: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsTumblr: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsYoutube: @wonderfulworldofdarklord

Episode D23: The Emperor's New Groove

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Would you take a look at that? Pretty pathetic, huh? Well, you'll never believe this, but that llama you're looking at was once a human being...or a dragonborn, or a water genasi, or something. Episode 44: Alice In Wonderland

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Today's domain ended up being MUCH harder than we anticipated. Horror versions of Wonderland are a dime a dozen, but fitting it into the specific mold of a Ravenloft domain was another matter entirely. Follow us down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass as we discuss:Our potential darklord candidates, including the reason why neither Alice, the Queen of Hearts, or the Red Queen alone had what it took to be our darklord (and also a rant about how the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts are completely different characters); Why you do not, under any circumstances, want to go overboard with the worldbuilding;Communicating the strangeness of Wonderland in the language of D&D as well as through description; Some of Wonderland's major horror themes, so your dark horror version of Wonderland feels like Wonderland instead of like a Hot Topic t-shirt of a blood-soaked Cheshire Cat;and more! The full write-up for Wonderland is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/559672/wonderland-a-ravenloft-domain-of-dread?preview=1Dungeonland is available on DM's Guild here: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/17039/ex1-dungeonland-1e If you'd rather just watch a video about it, the video Tom mentioned is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdnP6EV0ctc&t=1sThe video Rachel mentioned about Wonderland as a dream and about the connections between Wonderland and Silent Hill is here: https://youtu.be/613V8HBrZoU?si=vS5aPt64KgcVkOsmTimestamps0:00 Introduction9:26 The Lord43:06 The Land1:01:34 Dread Possibilities fiction1:10:31 Dread Possibilities out of character1:27:03 Aging up (body horror, euphemistic discussion of sexual violence, use of the word "erotica")1:38:16 Aging up ends1:40:24 Parting thoughts1:57:40 D’s Parting Thoughts2:03:26 PostscriptContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Psychological torture (major), death (major), emotional abuse (major), body horror (transformation; moderate), sexual content (fade to black, moderate), child abuse (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 43: Aladdin

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! At long last, we get to an episode that we've been teasing for over a year, and that y'all have been asking for pretty much from episode one: Aladdin It combines a darklord with impeccable vibes, a setting with...somewhat problematic vibes that make it peccable but ridiculously cool, and well-earned nostalgia that brings it a ton of emotional power. Sit back and ruminate while we illuminate the possibilities for you. Topics discussed include:A broader motivation for Jafar that makes the lamp his top priority but not his only one, since "every week he tries to get the lamp from Aladdin and fails" is going to get really repetitive, really fast; The character class that gives Jafar all the magic your players will expect him to have, but still makes him miserable; How to bring Jasmine and Aladdin into your game without having them steal the spotlight from your PCs;Elements from the TV show you can bring in, including a villain that all you 90s kids KNEW was going to get mentioned; And more! The full write-up for Agrabah is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/555642/arabian-nights-a-ravenloft-domain-of-dread?preview=1If you want more resources on orientalism in D&D from people who are actually qualified to talk about it, the Asians Represent readthrough of Al-Qadim is here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbQUmmaVBxqpiwt3rjqQYNBerHPGPJUktThe video about Jafar and the TV villains is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzjwyYlsZ78Timestamps0:00 Introduction10:32 The Lord46:20 The Land1:06:54 Dread Possibilities1:23:19 Aging up (sexual content)1:26:22 Sexual part of aging up ends1:36:50 Parting thoughts2:06:57 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Mind control (major), death (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 42: Wreck-It Ralph

Our name's Wonderful World of Darklords, and we're a podcast. Uh, let's see...we're three and a half years old, 42 episodes long, got a bit of sappiness in us. Our passion bubbles very near the surface, I guess, not gonna lie. Anywho, uh, what else...we're converters. We convert Disney movies to Ravenloft domains, professionally. I mean, we're very good at what we do. Thing is, being a Byronic cesspool is the name of the game. Literally. That's what the "darklord" in Wonderful World of Darklords is. So yeah, naturally King Candy is the guy we're talking about. When he does an act of ultimate darkness, he gets a domain. But are there domains for an act of ultimate Disney movie to Ravenloft domain conversion? To that, we say ha! And no, there aren't. Which is honestly a good thing, because when we see King Candy out there, living in a hell of his own creation, constantly terrified that Vanellope will come and unravel all his lies, sometimes we think...man, it sure must be awful being the bad guy. Topics discussed include:How the heck to translate an arcade full of living video game characters into D&D terms, and how to get your PCs interacting with them when they are not, themselves, video game characters;Making King Candy even more hateable (which is impressive, because he's already REALLY AWFUL);Why the cy-bugs, while ridiculously cool, don't complicate the setting as much as we thought they would; The underrated John Carpenter movie that shows how to bring out the horror in what's mostly a pretty fantasy-heavy, horror-light setting; And more! The full write-up for the Arcades of Litwak is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/552182/the-arcades-of-litwak-a-ravenloft-domain-of-dread?preview=1The poll for our horror movie minisode is free for all on our Patreon, and will be until January 31st: https://www.patreon.com/posts/horror-movie-146799916Timestamps0:00 Announcements1:43 Introduction8:49 The Lord43:25 The Land1:08:43 Dread Possibilities1:34:38 Parting Thoughts1:50:03 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Mind control (major), memory manipulation (major), blood (moderate), heights and falling from them (moderate), death (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Kris Newton joins us as we close out 2025 with a discussion of Oliver and Company, and with it, the class option that has tragically never made it into a single edition of D&D: Doggie Crime Lord. Topics discussed include:Why a sadsack with a gambling addiction and a team of canine pickpockets is going to be irresistible for a whole lot of PCs;The versatility of this version of Bill Sykes, and how he can function as a low-level henchman for a variety of heavy hitters your PCs can tangle with later; The joys of treasure that comes with strings attached; An impromptu musical number; And more!Full writeups for Fagin and his magic dog biscuits can be found for free on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/fagin-146739039The link to our horror movie minisode poll is also on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/horror-movie-146799916TIMESTAMPS0:00 Introduction7:14 Fagin Stats and Background40:38 Adventures with FaginYou can find Kris at MegaDumbCast (https://megadumbcast.podbean.com/) and the now-completed Gameable Podcast (https://gameabledisneypodcast.tumblr.com/)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Arabian Dance, from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, via the European ArchiveDialog for Yensid was written by Azalin Rex himself: http://www.tumblr.com/darklordazalinThe Wonderful World of Darklords logo was designed by Halite Jones, whom you can find on Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.tumblr.com/halite-draw and http://www.instagram.com/insta_haliteContact us on:Gmail: [email protected]: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsTumblr: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsPatreon: www.patreon.com/WonderfulWorldofDarklordsYouTube: @wonderfulworldofdarklord

Episode 41: Sailor Moon (Listeners' Choice)

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! Earlier this year, our generous listeners donated $385 to Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), and that means a second Listener's Choice episode! For this one, we're reconnecting with our Toonami days to bring you Sailor Moon, with the iconic villain who finds her way into in every iteration of the show and manga: Queen Beryl. She made a bargain with dark powers to win the heart of someone who didn't love her back, only to have them reject her...and then reincarnate and reject her again. Sounds familiar. Topics discussed include:Why Beryl and her four generals give you a perfect campaign structure;Ways to incorporate the Sailor Guardians into your campaign while still allowing the PCs to be the protagonists;Incorporating themes of reincarnation into the Sailor Moon section of your game without necessarily having them be a factor when your PCs move on to a less reincarnation-heavy setting; How to give your PCs a Sailor Guardian transformation, because that's what we're all here for, and what their Sailor Guardian names might be in a world with no Mercury, Venus, Mars, or Jupiter;and more! The full write-up for Millennium City is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/548430/the-dark-kingdom-a-ravenloft-domain-of-dread?preview=1Timestamps0:00 Introduction8:22 The Lord34:58 The Land54:27 Dread Possibilities1:27:57 Aging Up (sexual content)1:28:52 NSFW part of Aging Up ends1:37:51 Parting Thoughts1:58:34 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Mind control (major), memory manipulation (major), abusive relationship subtext (major; trauma bonding, fawning), body horror (minor; transformation), death (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo VinuelaChopin Mazurka in B-Flat Major, Op. 17 No.1, performed by Christoph ZbindenChopin Etude Op. 10 No. 1 in C Major "Waterfall" (darklord theme), performed by Chiara BertoglioChopin Nocturne in F Major, Op. 15 No. 1 (land theme). performed by Luke FaulknerChopin Nocturne in D-Flat Major, Op. 17 No. 2 (Dread Possibilities), performed by Paul PitmanRachmaninoff Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Book Club of Dread: The Nightmare Lands, Book Two (The Nightmare Lands)

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords: Book Club of Dread! No, if you're not a patron, you didn't miss Book One; it's a Patreon exclusive. We talk about the rules of the Nightmare Land so much that we couldn't paywall them in good conscience, though, so we're making the second, rules-focused book of the 1995 Ravenloft Nightmare Lands boxed set free for everyone. The Nightmare Lands has a lot of legitimately cool ideas and some creepy, evocative settings and NPCs, but it's also an attempt to cludge together freeform indie ideas with second edition D&D mechanics. Topics discussed include:The five Disney/Pixar PCs we're going to subject to the torments of the Nightmare Court, complete with classes, levels, and alignments, and which one of them strides through the land of dreams like a goddess; How to make peace with your inner demons by gaining enough mental fortitude points to attain your inner peace number (hint: it's second edition, so it's through combat);Tom's on-mic meltdown at the way experience points were handled in the nineties; So, so many charts; And more! Our beverage is Nightmare on Bourbon Street, or Nightmare on Martinelli Street for a mocktail option. You can find the recipe here: https://www.halfbakedharvest.com/nightmare-on-bourbon-street/ We used the same regular non-alcoholic sparkling cider that we give our kids on New Year's Eve, and it was absolutely delicious, so we can 100% vouch for this whether you add a shot of bourbon or not.REMINDER: Our fundraiser for the Capital Area Food Bank is still live! https://give.capitalareafoodbank.org/wonderfulworldofdarklordsTimestamps:0:00 Introduction15:53 Meet the adventuring party!29:40 General dreamscape rules35:17 Madness rules43:01 Inner strength and mental fortitude1:15:20 Dream powers1:43:12 Geography of the Nightmare Lands1:59:49 Dream powers of the Nightmare Court2:22:34 Dr. Illhousen's clinicAll music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky, performed by the Skidmore College OrchestraThe Wonderful World of Darklords logo was designed by Halite Jones, whom you can find on Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.tumblr.com/halite-draw and http://www.instagram.com/insta_haliteContact us on:Gmail: [email protected]: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsTumblr: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsYoutube: @wonderfulworldofdarklord

Shutdown relief fundraiser for Capital Area Food Bank is LIVE!

Hello, dear listeners! Our fundraiser for the Capital Area Food Bank is LIVE! https://give.capitalareafoodbank.org/wonderfulworldofdarklordsIf you'd rather support your own local food bank, that's wonderful! Send us a screenshot of the receipt at [email protected] and we'll count it toward our goal. When we did our survey for what goals you'd like us to set for the fundraiser, there wasn't a single clear winner, but the great thing is that the four top vote-getters are all pretty easy things that can happen in installments. So here's what's going to happen!Unless no one donates at all, AMAs are happening. Everyone who donates gets to ask questions; just let us know if you want us to field them stoned or sober. Email us, contact on our various socials, leave it on the donation page as a comment, whatever. At $100, we'll do a Book Club of Dread for a single Hot Blood anthology. At $200, we'll also do a minisode for a single horror movie. At $300, we'll also stream an hour or two of playing Strahd's Possession or Stone Prophet. (We want to do two, but who even knows if the kids will allow us two hours of uninterrupted time.)At $400, we'll also do a Book Club of Dread for a second Hot Blood anthology. (Please get us to $400, guys. Rachel really wants to talk about Hotter Blood, which is the best book in the series, but obviously we also have to talk about one that's gonzo, not good.)At $500, we'll also do a minisode for a second horror movie. At $600, we'll stream another hour or two.If we get past our fundraising goal, we'll just keep this cycle going!Thank you so much for your generosity, and happy gaming! https://give.capitalareafoodbank.org/wonderfulworldofdarklords

    Episode 39: The Black Cauldron

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this episode, we're celebrating spooky season with one of Disney's spookier villains: the Horned King. He doesn't have a lot going for him other than vibes, but boy howdy, he has those vibes in abundance. (Is he aura farming? We're in our forties; we don't know.) Topics discussed include:A backstory for the Horned King that gives him a motivation beyond "how long I have thirsted to be a god among mortal men," which hinges entirely on three words of dialog (no, we don't mean "three lines," we mean "three words");Supplementary material from the books to flesh out the movie's setting while still allowing you to use the Horned King as your darklord instead of Arawn;Making a heroic sacrifice to destroy the cauldron without having to kill off any beloved characters; Why every campaign deserves an oracular pig;And more! The full write-up for Prydain is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/537766/Annuvin-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?view_as_pub=1Timestamps0:00 Introduction6:00 The Lord45:35 The Land1:04:32 Dread PossibilitiesAging Up (body horror, "fun skin things") 1:38:071:41:39 Parting Thoughts/Aging Up Ends 1:56:45 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Mind control (major), corpses (major), death (moderate)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 38: Brave

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this episode, Callaghan is finally dethroned as "darklord with the fewest lines of usable dialog" as we make a darklord out of...a bear. Not a werebear. Not a talking bear. Just a bear. But he's a bear who comes with a gothic curse and with FANTASY SCOTLAND, so it's well worth the effort of making him a darklord. Topics discussed include:Why Mor'du is going to want to throw down with your PCs even if they don't feed anyone a magic tart that turns them into a bear (although that would certainly help); All the world-building information about clans MacIntosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall that Tom was able to glean or extrapolate from a deep dive into Brave's ancillary material; The canonical domain that works beautifully with DunBroch as the source of the invading force that temporarily united the clans (no, not Original Recipe Falkovnia);Strahd or bear; And more! The full write-up for DunBroch is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/534982/The-Brave-Highlands-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770Yes, Tom's Nightmare on Elm Street adventure IS finished! https://www.dmsguild.com/product/534715/Never-Sleep-AgainTimestamps0:00 Introduction3:57 The Lord36:37 The Land1:06:23 Dread Possibilities1:40:13 Parting Thoughts 2:01:42 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Death (minor), body horror (transformation; minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. The Peddler's Tales, Episode 4: Gummi Bears

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In honor of Small Screen Summer, Kris Newton joins us for a Disney show that literally no one has ever asked for: Gummi Bears. Not only are they dashing and daring, courageous and caring, but they have much more complex and interesting lore than anyone would expect from a show about colorful bouncing bears, and it can lead to some terrific stories if you can get past the idea of a character named Tummi Gummi. Topics discussed include:Yes, really, this isn't a belated April Fools episode; The absurd amount of mythology in Gummi Bears, from the Great Gummis and the Gexodus to Gumadoon and the Barbics (I swear we are not making any of this up);The many connections between the culture of the Gummi Bears and that of the Vistani (NO, SERIOUSLY, Y'ALL);How to connect a Gummi Bears story to themes of the fragility of hope, the inherent corruptibility of man, and the need for trust in a fallen world (NO COME BACK WHERE ARE YOU GOING);and more!Full writeups for the Gummi Bears and Gummi Berry Juice can be found for free on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/135151538You can find Kris at MegaDumbCast (https://megadumbcast.podbean.com/) and the now-completed Gameable Podcast (https://gameabledisneypodcast.tumblr.com/)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Arabian Dance, from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, via the European ArchiveDialog for Yensid was written by Azalin Rex himself: http://www.tumblr.com/darklordazalinThe Wonderful World of Darklords logo was designed by Halite Jones, whom you can find on Tumblr and Instagram: https://www.tumblr.com/halite-draw and http://www.instagram.com/insta_haliteContact us on:Gmail: [email protected]: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsTumblr: @wonderfulworldofdarklordsPatreon: www.patreon.com/WonderfulWorldofDarklordsYouTube: @wonderfulworldofdarklord

    Episode 36: Gravity Falls

Welcome to the second installment of Wonderful World of Darklords' Small Screen Summer! In this episode, we're looking at the darklord who introduced a whole generation of fresh-faced little Disney XD viewers to cosmic horror. Bill Cipher is Baby's First Elder God and Gravity Falls is a phenomenal setting for occult investigation, but can a character as alien and amoral as Bill ever meet our four elements of darklord? (Spoilers: yes, but only with some help from Book of Bill. No, you don't have to read Book of Bill in order to understand the episode; we'll summarize it for you.) Topics discussed include:Preserving the feel of Gravity Falls, a town where everyone is deep in denial about the existence of the supernatural, in a world where magic is objectively real;Potential mysteries for your PCs to solve, since they probably already know what's hidden in the basement of the Mystery Shack;Tips for giving monsters a Gravity Falls spin, since brain-eating zombie clots feel a little too grim but bride-hungry gnome clots are an established part of the setting; The 2e/3e darklord whose powers and plans map almost perfectly to Bill's (although his name is confusingly close to that of a major Gravity Falls character, which isn't helpful for podcasting clarity);and more! The full write-up for Gravity Falls is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/528280/Gravity-Fell-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770The Shadow Rift adventure is also available on DM's Guild, although not for free: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/17482/The-Shadow-Rift-2eTimestamps0:00 Introduction5:18 The Lord39:42 The Land1:11:52 Dread Possibilities1:40:21 Parting Thoughts 2:00:38 D’s Parting Thoughts2:07:08 Episode 37 WatchlistContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Memory modification (major), gaslighting (major)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 35: Gargoyles

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords' Small Screen Summer! We're kicking off our summer of Disney shows with the villain that made little twelve-year-old Rachel look from her TV screen to her copy of the 1994 Ravenloft supplement Domains and Denizens and say, "I think she belongs in here": Demona. She's a Byronic garbage fire who will stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror, but she's also less involved in the day-to-day operations of the domain than Xanatos, which poses some unique challenges. Topics discussed include:How to compress the series' thousand-year timeline and globe-spanning adventures to a single domain that got pulled into Ravenloft after Strahd did;Why people might be uniquely afraid of gargoyles in a world that has aarakocra, dragonborn, and tieflings;Adapting the various antagonist factions of Gargoyles into D&D terms, from Xanatos to the Hunters to Macbeth;Drawing your PCs into Demona's orbit even though she's much more interested in messing with Goliath than with a random band of wandering transients;and more! The full writeup for Castle Wyvern is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/525108/The-City-of-Gargoyles-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770Timestamps0:00 Introduction5:37 The Lord41:15 The Land1:03:05 Dread Possibilities1:22:24 Aging Up (racism, hate groups, sexual content)1:29:58 Aging up ends 1:40:59 Parting Thoughts 2:13:43 D’s Parting Thoughts2:17:15 Episode 36 WatchlistContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Heights (major), blood (moderate), death (moderate)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 34: Thanos

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords: Marvel May! As soon as we announced this theme last May, you knew this one was coming. Thanos is such a compelling Big Bad for the entire MCU that they've been flailing to replace him ever since Infinity War, and he could make a fantastic Big Bad for your campaign as well . . . but can any villain, no matter how grandiose and self-deluded, be a darklord if they don't have a domain in the source material? Topics discussed include:The D&D setting that fits perfectly with Thanos's backstory and motivation, and also gives us plenty of flavor for a domain we have to invent almost from whole cloth; What even is an Infinity Stone in D&D terms, anyway?;Alternate motivations for Thanos, since resource scarcity is hardly the most pressing problem in Ravenloft; The dangers of introducing an epic-level villain with an epic-level scheme to any game that isn't all about him;And more! The full write-up for the Domain of the Mad Titan is available on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/521375/The-Mad-Titans-Domain-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?affiliate_id=241770PhD&D's video on Tovag is available here: https://youtu.be/jXoORohKKAQ?si=h62KXORCqijkTAUzOur second Listener's Choice poll is available to all listeners on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/listeners-choice-127690065?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkTimestamps0:00 Introduction7:41 The Lord46:27 The Land58:54 Dread Possibilities D's Journal (this is where all the bad stuff is; skip if necessary)1:08:36 Dread Possibilities discussion1:34:19 Aging Up (body horror, mind control, emotional abuse)1:38:58 Aging up ends 1:48:29 Parting Thoughts 2:14:36 D’s Parting ThoughtsContent Advisory for D's Journal (details on content advisories can be found on Facebook, Tumblr, and Patreon)Torture (major), forced mind-reading (major), imprisonment (major), genocide (moderate), slavery (moderate), blood (moderate), body horror (minor), kidnapping (minor), child abuse (minor), forced experimentation (minor)All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. D's Journal: Labyrinth (with commentary)

While D's Journal is normally a patrons-only perk, we felt bad that we couldn't give more concrete examples of how to personalize the Labyrinth to your own PCs because the episode was already so. dang. long. That's why we've decided to open up this behind-the-scenes explanation of the imagery and encounters that D experienced to everyone. Patrons, don't worry--you'll still be getting some exclusive D content, it just isn't done yet.All music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 33: Labyrinth

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! In this extremely long episode, Tom and an increasingly thirsty Rachel are talking about a villain who looms large in the imaginations of Xennials everywhere: Jareth, the Goblin King. He's a magnetic and malevolent presence whose domain is a perfect reflection of his disaster bi energy, but he has no canon backstory and may just be a figment of Sarah's imagination, so adapting him posed some challenges. But if Sarah can escape the oubliette, cross the Bog of Eternal Stench, and say no to Jareth looking at her like that in the masquerade ball, we can rise to this challenge. Topics discussed include:Squaring the circle of making Jareth an independent being and a figment of Sarah's imagination at the same time, and how you can make him occupy that same role for your PCs;Adapting the labyrinth so it reflects your PCs' inner worlds in the same way that the canon labyrinth reflects Sarah's, from "give the movie's labyrinth-dwellers the mannerisms of your NPCs" to high-concept lunacy that makes our Christmas Carol episode look straightforward; How to bring your PCs into the labyrinth in the first place, since presumably none of them are going to wish for the goblins to steal their babies; Why everything about the labyrinth, including the thirteen-hour time limit, is ultimately a distraction from Jareth's real game;and more! The full write-up for the Goblin King's Labyrinth is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/517199/The-Goblin-Kings-Labyrinth-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?view_as_pub=1Our Listener's Choice poll is available as a public post on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/listeners-choice-125322997Timestamps0:00 Introduction6:01 The Lord53:05 The Land1:21:50 Dread Possibilities2:15:37 Parting Thoughts2:41:52 D’s Parting ThoughtsAll music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 104: Phineas and Ferb

Ah, Leslie the Listener! How unexpected...and by unexpected, we mean COMPLETELY EXPECTED! Behold, our April UNFools-inator! You see, back in Gimmelshtump, we always wanted to run a Phineas and Ferb-themed session of Ravenloft, but we didn't know how to do it, and even if we had, no one would have come to our game because they would have been playing Roger's game instead. So with the April UNFools-inator, we're going to turn what would normally be a wacky April Fools Day episode into an actual guide to running a Phineas and Ferb session in your Ravenloft game. Topics discussed include:Why Dr. Doofenshmirtz is the most evil, brilliant, and devastatingly handsome darklord in all of Ravenloft (or will be, when he targets Strahd with the Uglinator); The role of Vanessa's friend Candace, along with her two brothers and her very normal pet platypus; How to bring heavily armed transients into the Tri-State Area. (Heavily armed, that's weird. Like, are their arms heavy? The paladin's wearing plate mail on her arms, that looks heavy, I guess, but what about that gnomish rogue over there?)Aglets; And more!Dr. Doofenshmirtz's stats and the writeup for the Spell-Inator are available as a public post on our Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/posts/behold-spell-125329957Our Listener's Choice poll is also available as a public post on our Patreon! https://www.patreon.com/posts/listeners-choice-125322997Timestamps0:00 Introduction5:20 The Lord26:20 Dread Possibilities45:04 D’s Parting ThoughtsAll music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 9 No.1 (main theme), performed by Eduardo VinuelaChopin Etude Op. 25, No. 12 in C Minor: “Ocean” (darklord theme), performed by Edward NeemanRachmaninoff Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op. 3 - 2. Episode 32: Up

Welcome to Wonderful World of Darklords! We're continuing last month's theme of "traveling to amazing and faraway places" with a very different elderly darklord who mistrusts outsiders. Up is one of the greatest animated movies ever made, but can it be a great D&D setting as well? Topics discussed include:How to make Kevin feel like a singularly beautiful and unique creature in a world with literal unicorns; Why Up is especially suited to low-level play (although it can also be adapted to higher-level parties); The D&D version of "intelligent talking dogs in airplanes that shoot tranquilizer darts;"Why it's critical to enter Paradise Falls with a specific goal in mind in order to make the adventure feel like the movie;and more! The full write-up for Paradise Falls is available for free on DM's Guild: https://www.dmsguild.com/product/514273/Paradise-Falls-A-Ravenloft-Domain-of-Dread?view_as_pub=1Timestamps0:00 Introduction2:41 The Lord28:27 The Land43:37 Dread Possibilities1:18:09 Parting Thoughts1:39:24 D’s Parting ThoughtsAll music recordings are in the public domain (mark 1.0) and are licensed through https://musopen.org:Chopin Nocturne in B-Flat Minor, Op. 3 - 2.
