Introduction to the Courage to Get Up Study

Series Overview: When waiting has lasted longer than expectedThis 7-part study invites you to explore what it means to respond when Jesus calls you to rise from places of limitation, delay and discouragement. Through honest reflection and Scripture, you'll discover how environments shape our thinking, how long seasons of waiting can affect our expectations, and why courage is often required before change becomes reality. The story of the man at the Pool of Bethesda reveals a Saviour who is not intimidated by how long you've been stuck, how many opportunities you've missed, or how difficult it feels to believe again. Each part offers a moment of reflection and challenge, reminding us that breakthrough often begins with a decision to trust God's word more than our past experiences. You'll discover that faith is not always about having all the answers, but about responding when Jesus says, "Get up." As you journey through this study, you'll see that God's invitation is not simply to survive where you are, but to walk forward into freedom, purpose and a future transformed by His power. Seek. Discern. Obey. Thank you for joining me in the Word & Prayer Room. If this study has encouraged you, please follow the podcast and share it with someone who may be seeking God's direction. Remember, God is not distant or silent. He is able to make His will known to those who sincerely seek Him. Until next time, keep listening for His voice, keep trusting His word, and keep walking by faith.

Day 1: You Become What You Live Around

The environments we live in shape us more than we often realise. They influence our thinking, affect our expectations and can determine what we come to accept as normal. In Day 1 of The Courage to Get Up, we begin at the Pool of Bethesda, where a man had spent thirty-eight years surrounded by sickness, disappointment and limitation. What began as a place of hope had become a place of waiting. A place where people gathered in expectation of change, yet many remained trapped in the same circumstances year after year.As we explore John 5:1–15, we'll examine how prolonged exposure to unhealthy environments can affect our mindset, our confidence and even our faith. Over time, we can become so accustomed to limitation that we stop expecting anything different. We adapt to what surrounds us and gradually lower our expectations of what God can do.Yet when Jesus arrives, He sees beyond the environment, beyond the labels and beyond the years of disappointment. He challenges the man to see himself differently and opens the door to a future he may have stopped believing was possible. This study invites us to reflect on the environments that influence our lives and asks whether they are drawing us closer to God's purpose or keeping us stuck in cycles of limitation.Scripture Focus: John 5:1–15Key Question: Have you become so shaped by your environment that you've started to accept limitations God wants to break?Join us as we begin this journey from waiting to walking, from limitation to freedom, and from surviving to living with renewed purpose and hope. The Courage to Get Up – From Waiting to Walking. From Limitation to Freedom.Seek. Discern. Obey.Thank you for joining me in the Word & Prayer Room. If this study has encouraged you, please follow the podcast and share it with someone who may be seeking God's direction. Remember, God is not distant or silent. He is able to make His will known to those who sincerely seek Him. Until next time, keep listening for His voice, keep trusting His word, and keep walking by faith.

Day 2: Do You Really Want To Get Well?

At first glance, it seems like a strange question. Why would Jesus ask a man who had been unable to walk for thirty-eight years whether he wanted to get well?Yet beneath the surface lies a question that reaches far beyond physical healing. It is a question about desire, readiness and responsibility. Because sometimes we can become so familiar with our circumstances that the thought of change feels uncomfortable, uncertain or even frightening. In Day 2 of The Courage to Get Up, we explore one of the most challenging questions Jesus ever asked. As we examine John 5:1–15, we'll consider how disappointment, delay and repeated setbacks can affect our willingness to embrace change. We'll also explore the difference between wanting relief from our situation and being ready to take the steps necessary for transformation. The man at the Pool of Bethesda had spent years explaining why he could not move forward. But Jesus was not interested in his excuses. He was inviting him to consider a different future. This study challenges us to look honestly at our own lives. Are there areas where we say we want change, yet continue to hold on to the habits, mindsets or fears that keep us where we are?Scripture Focus: John 5:1–15Key Question: If Jesus asked you today, "Do you really want to get well?" how would you answer?Join us as we explore the courage required to move beyond excuses, embrace responsibility and step into the freedom God desires for our lives.

Day 3: When God's Word Contradicts Your Reality

What do you do when God says one thing, but your circumstances seem to say the complete opposite? The man at the Pool of Bethesda had spent thirty-eight years living with a reality that appeared unchangeable. Everything around him reinforced the same message: this is how your life will always be. Yet when Jesus arrived, He spoke words that challenged everything the man had come to believe about himself and his future. In Day 3 of The Courage to Get Up, we explore the tension that exists between God's promises and our present circumstances. We'll examine why faith is often tested when God's Word contradicts what we can see, how our experiences can shape our expectations, and why transformation often begins with believing God before we see the evidence.Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly spoke realities that seemed impossible at the time. He called Abram the father of many nations before he had a child. He called Gideon a mighty warrior while he was hiding in a winepress. And at Bethesda, Jesus spoke possibility into a situation that had been defined by limitation for decades. This study challenges us to consider which voice we are allowing to shape our thinking: the voice of our circumstances or the voice of God.Scripture Focus: John 5:1–15Key Question: Where in your life is God calling you to believe His Word, even when your current reality appears to say otherwise?Join us as we discover how faith grows when we choose to trust God's perspective above our own and learn to see beyond what is visible today. The Courage to Get Up – From Waiting to Walking. From Limitation to Freedom.Thank you for joining me in the Word & Prayer Room. If this study has encouraged you, please follow the podcast and share it with someone who may be seeking God's direction. Remember, God is not distant or silent. He is able to make His will known to those who sincerely seek Him. Until next time, keep listening for His voice, keep trusting His word, and keep walking by faith.

Day 4: Who Am I Without My Mat?

For thirty-eight years, the mat was part of the man's identity. It represented his condition, his limitations and the life he had always known. It was more than something he lay on. It was a symbol of who he had become. Then Jesus healed him and gave an unexpected instruction: "Pick up your mat and walk." Why take the mat? Why not leave it behind? In Day 4 of The Courage to Get Up, we explore the challenge of living beyond the identities that have been shaped by our pain, disappointment and past experiences. Sometimes God changes our circumstances before we have fully adjusted to seeing ourselves differently. The healing may have happened, but our thinking still needs to catch up.We'll examine how easily we can become attached to labels, roles and stories that were never meant to define us permanently. Whether it is failure, rejection, fear, loss or limitation, there are times when God calls us to let go of an old identity and embrace who He says we are.The man at Bethesda could no longer define himself by what had held him back. Jesus was inviting him into a new reality, one where his condition was no longer the most important thing about him. This study challenges us to consider what we may still be carrying from a previous season and whether God is calling us to step into a new identity rooted in His truth rather than our past experiences.Scripture Focus: John 5:1–15Key Question: If God removed the thing that has defined you for years, who would you become?Join us as we explore the courage required to leave behind old identities, embrace God's perspective and walk confidently into the future He has prepared. Day 5: Pick Up Your Mat

When Jesus healed the man at the Pool of Bethesda, He didn't simply tell him to walk. He gave a specific instruction: "Get up, pick up your mat and walk."The healing was God's part. Picking up the mat was the man's.In Day 5 of The Courage to Get Up, we explore the responsibility that comes after breakthrough. Too often, we pray for change, freedom and transformation, but overlook the practical steps required to walk in what God has already done. The mat represented the man's past. It was a reminder of where he had been, what he had endured and what God had brought him through. By carrying the mat instead of lying on it, he was making a public declaration that his season of limitation was over. We'll explore why obedience often requires action, how faith is demonstrated through movement, and why it is not enough to receive a blessing if we are unwilling to walk in it. God's power may open the door, but we must still choose to step through it.This study challenges us to consider what God may be asking us to pick up. What responsibility, opportunity, assignment or act of obedience have we been avoiding while waiting for God to do more?Scripture Focus: John 5:1–15Key Question: What has God already done in your life that now requires a response from you?Join us as we discover that true transformation is not just about receiving God's intervention, but partnering with Him through obedience and action. Day 6: The Power of Your Testimony

What happens after the breakthrough? After exploring the environment of Bethesda, the challenge of change, the courage to trust God's voice, the struggle of identity and the determination to stay up, we now move beyond the pool and into the power of testimony. In this sixth study of The Courage to Get Up, we discover that what God has done in your life is not just for you. The man at Bethesda could not hide the fact that his story had changed. The mat he once lay on had become evidence of God's transforming power. His life had become a testimony.Through Revelation 12:11, we explore why testimony is such a powerful weapon of faith. You'll discover how sharing God's faithfulness strengthens others, breaks the power of isolation and reminds us of the victories God has already won in our lives. We also consider why some of our greatest testimonies are born from the very places we once wanted to hide. This study will encourage you to recognise the value of your own story and understand how God can use your experiences to bring hope, encouragement and faith to others.Key Themes: The purpose and power of testimony  Why God doesn't waste our story  Overcoming through the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony  How testimony strengthens faith and encourages others  Using your story to bring glory to God Reflection: What evidence of God's faithfulness in your life could become a source of encouragement for someone else?Seek.

Day 7: From Bethesda to the Temple

As we come to the final day of Courage to Get Up, we discover that the story was never ultimately about the pool, the mat or even the miracle. It was about where Jesus was leading the man all along. In this concluding study, we follow the healed man beyond Bethesda and discover that the final place we find him is in the temple, in the presence of God. While others focused on rules, traditions and the fact that he was carrying his mat on the Sabbath, the man himself was found worshipping. The system noticed the mat, but missed the miracle.Through this powerful conclusion, we explore the deeper purpose behind every breakthrough. God's desire is not simply to change our circumstances, but to draw us closer to Himself. The miracle was never the destination. It was the doorway. This final teaching challenges us to consider whether we have become so focused on the blessings of God that we have overlooked the One who gives them. It reminds us that every lesson, every breakthrough and every testimony is ultimately an invitation into a deeper relationship with Him.In This Episode: The significance of finding the man in the temple  Why the religious leaders missed the miracle  The difference between pursuing blessings and pursuing God  When people focus on the mat rather than the miracle  Why God's presence is the true destination of every journey Reflection:Has your greatest pursuit become the breakthrough, or the God who brings it?Series Conclusion: May you have the courage to get up, the conviction to stay up and the faith to keep walking. And may your journey, like the man at Bethesda, lead you ever closer to the presence of God.Seek. Discern. Obey.Thank you for joining me in the Word & Prayer Room. If this study has encouraged you, please follow the podcast and share it with someone who may be seeking God's direction. Remember, God is not distant or silent. Introduction to The Gideon Fleece Teaching Series

The Gideon Fleece: When You Need Direction from GodHave you ever found yourself facing a decision and wondering whether you are truly hearing from God?In this opening episode of The Gideon Fleece, we begin our journey through the story of Gideon and explore the circumstances that led to one of the most well-known acts of seeking God's direction in Scripture. Before there was a fleece, there was a nation in crisis. Israel had drifted away from God and found itself living under oppression, fear and uncertainty. Yet even in the middle of their struggle, God was preparing to raise up a deliverer.Together, we'll explore the historical context of Gideon's story, the spiritual lessons hidden within Israel's experience, and why understanding the background is essential if we are to fully appreciate the significance of the fleece.Whether you're seeking guidance, wrestling with uncertainty, or simply wanting to deepen your understanding of God's Word, this study will help you see how God works even in seasons of difficulty and confusion.Scripture Focus: Judges 6Key Question: What do we do when we need God's direction but cannot yet see His plan?Join us as we begin this powerful journey of faith, discernment and obedience.Seek. Day 1: Setting the Context - Why Gideon's Story Matters

Setting the Context: Why Gideon's Story Matters Before we can understand the fleece, we need to understand the crisis that came before it.In this opening episode of The Word & Prayer Room, we set the scene for Gideon's story by exploring the spiritual, social and economic conditions facing Israel in Judges chapter 6. For seven years, the nation lived under oppression from the Midianites. Fear was widespread, resources were scarce, and many had lost hope that things could ever change. But beneath the surface of Israel's struggle was a deeper issue. Their circumstances were not simply the result of bad luck or difficult times. They were the consequence of drifting away from God. Yet even in their failure, God's mercy remained. While the people could only see their problems, God was already preparing a solution. This episode helps us understand the backdrop to Gideon's calling and reveals important lessons about God's faithfulness, discipline and restoration. It reminds us that no matter how difficult the season, God is always at work behind the scenes, preparing the next chapter of His purpose.Scripture Focus: Judges 6:1–10Key Question: Could God be preparing an answer in the very area where you feel most discouraged?Join us as we begin this journey through the Gideon Fleece model and discover how God works in seasons of uncertainty, challenge and change.Seek.

    Day 2: The Threshing Floor

The Threshing Floor: The Place Where God Brings ClarityBefore Gideon laid out the fleece, he stood on a threshing floor. And before God gives direction, He often brings us to a place of separation, refining and truth. In this episode of The Gideon Fleece, we explore the powerful symbolism of the threshing floor and why it plays such a significant role in understanding the Gideon Fleece model. Throughout Scripture, the threshing floor is more than a physical location. It is a place where God exposes what is hidden, separates what is valuable from what is not, and brings clarity where there has been confusion.Together, we'll discover what it means to come to the threshing floor in our own lives and why God often deals with our motives, fears, assumptions and distractions before revealing the next step.If you're seeking direction, wrestling with uncertainty, or waiting for God to make something clear, this study will help you understand the process He often uses to prepare us to hear His voice.Scripture Focus: Judges 6Key Question: What might God be trying to separate, reveal or refine in your life before He gives you the answer you're seeking?Join us as we explore the place where confusion gives way to clarity and where God's truth rises above our own understanding.Seek. Discern. Obey.Thank you for joining me in the Word & Prayer Room. If this study has encouraged you, please follow the podcast and share it with someone who may be seeking God's direction. Day 3: The Call of Gideon

The Call of Gideon: From Fear to FaithWhat if God called you to something greater while you were still struggling with fear, doubt and insecurity? In this episode of The Gideon Fleece, we explore the powerful story of Gideon's calling in Judges 6:11–16. We discover where God found Gideon, hiding in a winepress, and what that reveals about the way fear can shape our decisions, limit our effectiveness and distort our perception. As we unpack the conversation between Gideon and God, we'll examine three powerful lessons that remain relevant today: How disappointment can affect the way we hear God's voice  Why we often focus on our limitations instead of God's calling  The difference between seeking reassurance and delaying obedience Gideon's story reminds us that God does not wait for us to become fearless before He calls us. He meets us where we are, speaks to our potential, and invites us to step beyond our insecurities into a life of faith and purpose. If you've ever questioned your ability, felt unqualified for what God is asking of you, or found yourself waiting for one more sign before taking action, this study is for you.Scripture Focus: Judges 6:11–16Key Question: Are you operating from a threshing floor or a winepress?Join us as we discover how God moves ordinary people from fear into faith and from hiding into purpose.Seek. Day 4: Building Your Gideon Fleece

A decision about your future, your calling, your family, your ministry, or your next step in life?In this episode of The Gideon Fleece, we explore the powerful principle behind Gideon's fleece in Judges 6:36-40 and what it means for believers today. Together, we'll look at how to seek God's direction with sincerity, wisdom and confidence when the answer needs to be unmistakable. You'll discover: Why posture matters before seeking God's guidance  The significance of the threshing floor as a place of honesty and surrender  How to avoid seeking confirmation for decisions you've already made  Five practical ways God may confirm His direction  A step-by-step framework for building a modern-day Gideon fleece  How to recognise God's answer without confusion or manipulation This episode is not about testing God. It's about creating the conditions to hear Him clearly so that you can move forward in faith and obedience. If you're facing an important decision and need clarity, direction, confirmation or peace, this study will provide practical tools to help you seek God's will with confidence.Scripture Focus: Judges 6:36–40Key Question: What decision are you currently facing that requires an unmistakable answer from God?Take a moment, bring your request before the Lord, and join us as we explore how to seek His direction with a willing heart.Seek.
