The Taboo Show: Breaking Barriers and Spicing Up Your Writing with Dr. Trina Read.

Welcome back to another episode of The Writing Community Chat Show, recently ranked number 3 in the top 10 writing podcasts in the UK for 2025. In this special “eve of Valentine’s Day” edition, hosts Chris and the team dive into the messy, complicated, and wonderful world of intimacy with the internationally recognized sexologist and best-selling author, Dr. Trina Read. Trina Read With over 25 years of experience helping people navigate the world of pleasure, Dr. Read joined us to talk about her journey from a syndicated sex columnist to a pioneer of the “self-help fiction” genre. Her latest novel, The Taboo Show, is set to challenge perceptions and make us laugh while rethinking what we know about pleasure.Trina answers the questions we want to know. How much sex in a relationship is normal? What should couples do after 10 years of marriage, and much more. Plus, listen to CJ reading Chris Hooley some ai generated suggested sext texts. From Non-Fiction to “Self-Help Fiction”Dr. Read’s transition into fiction was born from a desire to reach women who might find traditional non-fiction a “slog”. After the success of her bestseller Till Sex Do Us Part, she developed a five-step program that she eventually wove into the lives of four fictional characters in The Sex Course. Her new book, The Taboo Show, continues the journey of these four women as they explore the “Taboo Sex Show”—a trade show experience Dr. Read knows well from her years as a mainstage speaker. From tantric skepticism to “Wiccan sex magic,” the story uses relatable characters to demystify complex topics.Expert Advice for Writers and Couples. One of the most enlightening parts of the episode was Dr. Read’s advice on the craft of writing intimacy. She admits that writing sex scenes is “incredibly difficult” and requires a delicate balance. Her top tip? Edit out the “darlings.” To keep fiction engaging, she often removes up to 80% of the educational content to focus on the character’s emotional reaction rather than the instruction itself.Advice for couples at every stage:* New Couples: Slow down and enjoy the courtship; don’t rush the buildup.* The 6-Month Mark: This is when bad habits form. Start having conversations now before the “newness” wears off.* The 10-Year Veterans: Focus on “erotic threads” outside the bedroom—small acts of kindness and desire throughout the day to help bridge the “delayed sexual response”.Demystifying the “Taboo.”Dr. Read also breaks down the common misconceptions around Tantra, describing it simply as an exchange of energy and a way to build pleasure through connection. She encourages couples to lean into the awkwardness of talking about sex, noting that most people can share their bodies for decades but still struggle to share their words.Final Thoughts & Pre-Order Info.Whether you’re looking to spice up your Valentine’s weekend or looking for tips on writing authentic, “classy” intimacy in your next novel, this episode is a must-watch.Dr. Trina Read’s new novel, The Taboo Show, is available for pre-order now and officially launches on February 28th. Unpopular Opinions & Hard Truths: Why Your Book Might Be Getting Rejected.

If you tuned into our latest live stream, you know we didn’t hold back. Usually, we’re joined by New York Times best-sellers or indie superstars, but this week, it was just us, Chris and Chris, getting real with the community. We dove into the “unpopular opinions” that every writer thinks but few dare to say, and we launched something that could change your publishing journey forever. It was a fun conversation. Full of questions from the audience and more.Comments on the video on YouTube:“Really interesting show guys. Nice one.”“Superb show!”The “Hot Takes” That Divided the Chat.We opened the floor to the writing community’s most controversial takes on literature. From the broad application of symbology in Dan Brown’s work to the structural repetitiveness of the Harry Potter series, no giant was safe. While we all appreciate the success of these icons, we discussed how certain “formulaic” approaches can be a double-edged sword for new writers. Based on our Facebook thread that had hundreds of replies to the question: what highly popular book do you dislike? Why Most Books Get Rejected. The title of the show wasn’t just clickbait. Rejection is the one thing every author has in common, but why does it happen? Often, it isn’t the story itself, it’s the package.A weak pitch, a cluttered synopsis, or a query letter that misses the mark can end a book’s journey before an agent even reads Chapter One. We’ve seen it time and again over 380+ interviews, and that’s why we decided it was time to take action.BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: The WCCS Query Clinic is OPEN!We are thrilled to officially announce the Query Clinic, hosted right here on our Substack. We wanted a way to give back to the community and provide the kind of hands-on help that usually costs a fortune. How it works:* For Paid Members: Once a month, we will open a dedicated thread where you can submit your work for critique. We will select submissions to be showcased and edited in a monthly video, explaining what we changed and why.* For Founding Members: We are offering a guarantee. Plus, we’ll provide a curated list of agents specifically suited to your work and advice on how to hit “send” with confidence. Our goal is to turn this Substack into a workshop environment where we can all develop our craft together. Don’t be shy, it’s all for the good of the community! What’s Next for WCCS?The year is only getting busier! Mark your calendars for:* The London Book Fair (May): Chris and I will be there in person, interviewing industry leaders in a very posh setting.* Harrogate (July): We’ve been invited back to the world-famous crime writing festival for the 04th time in a row!* Next Week’s Guest: Get ready for something a little different as we welcome Dr. Trina Reed, a Canadian sexologist. We’ll be talking about her new book and perhaps asking some “inappropriate” questions about love triangles in fiction the day before valentines day.Ready to fix your query? Finding Hope at the End of the World: A Masterclass in Truth with Paul E Hardisty.

How do you write a future that feels real? We sit down with environmental scientist and war correspondent Paul E Hardisty to discuss the conclusion of his “The Forcing” trilogy and why literacy is our last defense against a new feudalism. The Road to Writing: From 5-Year-Old Typist to Front-Line Witness.Paul E Hardisty didn’t take the traditional path to becoming a critically acclaimed novelist. Though he began typing stories at age five, he hit a wall at eighteen. Inspired by Hemingway’s advice to “Write what you know,” Paul realized he didn’t know anything yet.He spent the next 30 years gaining that knowledge as an environmental scientist and journalist, reporting from dangerous regions like Yemen, Ethiopia, and most recently, the battlefields of Ukraine.“I want to write fiction that comes as close to truth—conveying essential truth—as possible. I think that is the purpose of literature.” — Paul E Hardisty.Confronting “The Hope”: A Vision of 2082.The interview centers on the release of The Hope, the explosive conclusion to a trilogy that started with The Forcing and The Descent.Set in a windswept, contracted world where the global population has plummeted below a billion, The Hope introduces us to Boo, a 16-year-old with a photographic memory living in a society where books are illegal and literacy has vanished.BUY IT HERE.Writing Advice: The Iceberg Principle. For the writers in our community, Paul shares his “anti-course” philosophy. Having never taken a creative writing class, he advocates for:* Finding your own path: “Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken.”* The Iceberg Principle: Focus on immediacy—sights, smells, and tactile feelings—rather than being didactic.* Biting on the Nail: Inspired by Hemingway, Paul’s Substack name refers to the discipline of getting up and doing the hard work of writing, no matter what happened the night before.Key Themes from the Episode:* The Science of Fiction: Paul explains how he used robust IPCC climate projections to build a plausible 2082, focusing on “refugia”—pockets of the planet that remain habitable.* The New Feudalism: A chilling warning about how plummeting literacy rates and the rise of the smartphone era could mirror the dark ages, making society easier to dominate.* Authenticity in Action: Paul discusses his three trips to Ukraine (with a fourth planned) and how bearing witness to trauma and stoicism informs the emotional core of his work.🎧 Watch the Full Interview! For more on Paul’s experiences as a pilot, his favourite Ukrainian borscht, and why he chose a blue fist for his final book cover, watch the full episode here: From Ukraine to The Great Barrier Reef: Writing Truth in Fiction with Paul E Hardisty📚 Where to Find Paul’s Work* Book Release: The Hope is available January 29th, 2026. Beyond the Page: Building a BookTok Empire with William Lee.

In the landscape of modern publishing, the “isolated author” is a dying breed. To succeed as an indie today, you don’t just need a gripping story; you need a community. This past Friday, the Writing Community Chat Show (recently ranked #3 in the UK!) sat down with a man who has mastered this evolution: indie thriller author William Lee.Known for his dark, atmospheric mysteries and a rise on TikTok, William joined us to pull back the curtain on his process, his live streams, and the upcoming release of his second book. From Failing English to Crafting Thrillers. It’s a story many of us can relate to: William didn’t start out as a bookworm. In fact, he admittedly “badly failed” his mock exams in school. It wasn’t until a wake-up call from his father that he dove into creative writing techniques, eventually picking up reading as a hobby after high school. That spark turned into a flame, and eighteen months later, he released his debut, Gone Before the Moon. What started as a “superhero” concept morphed into a gritty, supernatural series when William realized he preferred realistic, high-stakes tension over “red spandex.”The “Secret Sauce” of TikTok Live. While many authors view marketing as a chore, William has turned it into a cornerstone of his brand. He moved away from shouting “buy my book” into the void and instead leaned into the power of TikTok Live. Why it works for him:* The Personal Touch: He wraps orders, signs books, and adds extras like bookmarks and tea bags live on camera.* Royalties: Selling directly through TikTok Shop is often more beneficial for indie authors than the traditional Amazon cut.* Vulnerability: By showing his face and chatting about his day, he sells himself as a person, which naturally leads to people wanting to read his work.Overcoming the “Indie” Hurdles.William was incredibly candid about the struggles of the self-published path, particularly Imposter Syndrome. Even with five-star reviews calling his work “atmospheric” and “un-put-downable,” he admits to worrying if book two will live up to the hype. His advice for those “dragging their feet” on social media? Just start. The community is supportive, and being “consistent” is far more important than being “perfect.”What’s Next: The Black Veil Files.Fans of the series won’t have to wait long for more. William shared that he has a five-book arc planned for The Black Veil Files, with short stories and a prequel novella also in the works. The next instalment, Dragged into the Maw, is slated for a March or April 2026 release. It promises to keep the supernatural thrills going, featuring a “Negan-esque” villain inspired by The Walking Dead.Watch & Listen. You can watch the full, hour-long interview below to catch William’s live reading of the Gone Before the Moon prologue and hear his answers to community questions about his “superhero” inspirations and his “worst fears.”Connect with William Lee:* TikTok: @william_lee_author* Website: williamleebooks.co.ukFor more interviews with the world’s best indie and traditionally published authors, subscribe to the Writing Community Chat Show here and on Youtube.Catch it on the go wherever you get your podcasts. Punch Up Your Fiction: Master the Art of Comedy with Dave Cohen.

The Writing Community Chat Show is back for 2026, and we are kicking off Season 17 with a masterclass in humor. Whether you’re writing a laugh-out-loud sitcom or looking to inject a bit of levity into a dark thriller, this guest is the person who quite literally “wrote the book” on the subject. We were joined by the legendary Dave Cohen. a founding member of the Comedy Store Players, a BAFTA-winning songwriter for Horrible Histories, and a writer for iconic shows like Spitting Image and Not Going Out.Dave shared his incredible journey from Leeds to the heart of the UK comedy scene, offering invaluable advice for writers at every level.Key Takeaways from the Interview.* Comedy is Character: Dave emphasizes that the best jokes aren’t just one-liners; they are born from character. In comedy, the obstacle isn’t just an external “baddie”—it’s often the character themselves looking in the mirror.* The “Momentary Removal of Sympathy”: Referencing comedy guru Dennis Norden, Dave explains that we laugh at characters like Stan and Ollie or Basil Fawlty because of a brief break in our sympathy, only to reconnect with their humanity moments later.* Humor in Genre: You don’t have to be writing a “funny novel” to use comedy. Dave discusses how writers like Mark Billingham use humor to provide a necessary change of pace and relieve tension in even the grimmest thrillers.* The Shakespeare Mindset: Dave gave us a sneak peek into his brand new project, The Shakespeare Mindsetpodcast. He explores how Shakespeare was essentially writing “sitcom” elements into his deepest tragedies and why the Bard is the ultimate guide for navigating the complexities of modern life.* Finish the First Draft: A vital tip for all writers: use a different “brain” for each draft. The first draft is for getting it down without judgment; the third or fourth draft is where you start “punching up” the jokes.Connect with Dave Cohen.Dave is passionate about building a community for comedy writers. From Elephants to Espionage: Vaseem Khan on Q, Rejections, and Finding the Joy in Writing.

The journey to becoming a published author is rarely a straight line, but few paths have been as globally adventurous, or involved a greater number of pachyderms and famous spies, as that of Vaseem Khan. From his decade living in India to his new role continuing the legacy of James Bond’s very own gadget master, Q, here are the key takeaways and inspiration points from a writer who proves that persistence truly is the only non-negotiable trait in this business.100 Rejections and the Power of Persistence.Vaseem’s story is a powerful reminder that rejection is not destiny, it’s just part of the process. After being encouraged by an English teacher in school, he wrote his first novel, a comic fantasy, at the age of 17. The response? A swift, harsh rejection. This was followed by a staggering two decades of writing and seven more rejected novels across various genres.* A Brutal Education: Over that period, Vaseem collected over a hundred rejection letters, describing the feeling as “like being kicked in the bollocks repeatedly every few years.”* The Commitment to the Dream: What kept him going was the fundamental love for books and the idea of being a writer. He believes those who last the course never give up on that core dream.* The Breakthrough Moment: His career finally launched at age 40 when he tapped into his personal experience: his 10 years living in India. He wrote The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra - a crime novel set in modern Mumbai featuring a serious policeman who inherits a baby elephant. His editor loved it precisely because it was “completely different to anything we’d seen in the crime fiction market.”Vaseem’s Advice on Finding Your Voice: You have to write what you know, or at least, what you are uniquely positioned to write. The trick is to do something “completely different, but the same, take an established genre, stick to its core beats, but tweak the formula just enough to offer a unique perspective.”Commissioned by Ian Fleming: The Q Mystery Series.Perhaps the most exciting new development in Vaseem’s career is his commission by the Ian Fleming Estate to continue the story of James Bond’s gadget master, Q.The request was clear: they did not want another straight spy novel.* The Perfect Pitch: The Estate asked for “something halfway between Mick Herren’s Slow Horses and Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club.“* The Premise: In the first book, Quantum of Menace, Q is booted out of MI6 at age 50. He returns to his small hometown, having left a “messy past behind,” to reinvestigate the mysterious death of a childhood friend. The hope is that he will evolve into an amateur detective, solving mysteries in this small-town setting.* The 007 Cameo: For Bond fans, Vaseem confirmed that he’s included plenty of Easter eggs, and Commander James Bond “does make a meaningful appearance in the second half of the book.”The Single Most Important Piece of Writing AdviceWhen asked for the one crucial tip he gives in his workshops, Vaseem didn’t hesitate:“The number one reason that books are rejected by agents is because the quality of the book does not meet their minimum standard for them to be able to have confidence sending it out to a publisher.”His concrete advice is to focus on craft before submission:* Understand Your Genre: Know the standards for prose, plotting, and characterization required for your specific genre (e.g., crime fiction needs a strong hook and right ‘beats’ over literary prose).* Get Quality Feedback: You must get feedback. Don’t rely solely on friends; consider paying an experienced, trusted editor who has a proven history in the industry.* Don’t Ruin the Hook: You normally only get one good chance with a brilliant idea. Bad execution will ruin your chance with an agent, forcing you to write something else. Make the best possible fist of your manuscript before you send it in.Vaseem’s interview was a masterclass in commitment, creativity, and the power of finding that one unique idea that can change everything. You can find his books, including his new Q novel, on his website and at all major bookstores.Catch the full interview with Vaseem Khan on our YouTube channel: This is a public episode. Lizzy Barber on the 500-Word-a-Day Grind, Publishing Doubt, and The Myth of the 5 AM Writer.

We were thrilled to welcome back acclaimed psychological thriller author and Richard & Judy Bestseller, Lizzy Barber, to the show. Lizzy is the author of several gripping novels, including Be Mine, and has a knack for cutting right through the polished facade of the author life to reveal the messy, chaotic, and often hilarious reality. As The Writing Community Chat Show, recently ranked among the top 10 writing podcasts in the UK, we’ve interviewed over 360 authors, from NYT best-sellers to indie superstars. Few, however, have been as candid as Lizzy about the sheer struggle of creative output when life throws everything at you. This conversation is essential listening for anyone who feels they are running out of time, energy, or hope while chasing their writing dreams.1. The Real Cost of ‘The Slow Draft.’Lizzy shared that her current novel, her fifth, has been the slowest to write, a process she describes as being “on ice.” This wasn’t due to a lack of ideas but due to life: the birth of her daughter, dealing with family loss, and major personal hardships. The interview kicked off with a major truth bomb about managing expectations. Lizzy, who is working on this novel while juggling motherhood and dealing with family issues, admitted she has learned to accept a 500-word-a-day target.“I have worked out that for me that has meant 500 words a day. And I’m comfortable with that. And some days I will write a thousand and think, ‘what a great day.’ And then the next day I might write two.”She argues against the perceived hierarchy in the writing community that values speed and high word counts. While some authors happily “splurge 4,000 words a day,” Lizzy opts for quality, slow progress, where her 500 words are likely to be “500 really good words that won’t get cut up or replaced.”This is a powerful reminder: the goal is the finished product, not the speed of the first draft.2. Navigating Publishing: Big Five vs. Indie.Lizzy has the unique experience of having worked with both ‘Big Five’ publishing houses and an indie publisher (Dura). She offered a rare, side-by-side comparison of the two models:3. The Uncomfortable Question: Imposter Syndrome.Perhaps the most resonant part of the conversation for aspiring and established writers alike was Lizzy’s raw honesty about self-doubt.When discussing the draft she just completed after two years, she was upfront about her inner turmoil: “There is a part of me that thinks that this might not actually work as a book and that I might junk it.”This is imposter syndrome at its highest level - the doubt that creeps in after hundreds of hours of work. For Lizzy, this feeling is exacerbated by an “uneven publishing experience” and the anxiety of never finding a constant publisher “home.”“The worst thought is this kind of awareness of never being published again—that you’re kind of you’re done... That’s the kind of constant fear that you kind of live on the highwire of as an author.”Her advice for surviving this? Focus solely on the writing, because that is the only thing you can control. Don’t chase trends, and don’t let external noise or sales charts dictate your self-worth.4. The Author Brand: Be Yourself. (Even If You’re ADHD)Lizzy, who recently started to explore the possibility that she has undiagnosed ADHD, spoke about how she manages her time and how her personality informs her public persona. She admits she is good at jumping into pockets of time but “can’t write around the chaos.” She needs to compartmentalize her writing time, a vital lesson for any busy creative. On building an author brand, her advice is simple: Be authentic. If you are an introvert who hates reels and being on camera, don’t force it, it won’t feel fun or look genuine. But if you, like Lizzy, are comfortable debating, answering difficult questions, and being visible:“I love being on camera. I trained as an actress... I like the sound of my own voice. I don’t mind being silly. I don’t mind being filmed. I say [to my publisher] use me for that. I’m very comfortable to kind of debate and be asked hard questions.”Find your niche, whether it’s through newsletters, blogs, or public appearances, and commit to it. But whatever you do, avoid the pressure to join the “5 a.m. writer’s club” just because it sounds productive. Prioritize your sleep and your process.Watch the Full Interview.Lizzy’s interview is full of crucial, honest advice for writers at every stage of their career. Banker to Bestseller: How Pip Landers-Letts Won the £20,000 Kindle Storyteller Award and Traded the City for the Writing Life.

The Writing Community Chat Show is proud to bring you insights from the writers dominating the charts. We recently sat down with Pip Landers-Letts, the winner of the prestigious 2025 Kindle Storyteller Award, to discuss her incredible journey from a 15-year career in retail banking to winning one of the UK’s biggest literary prizes. The £20,000 Leap of Faith. For fifteen years, Pip Landers-Letts navigated the structured world of retail banking. But underneath the suits and spreadsheets, a powerful story was waiting to be told. Pip’s shift from the stability of a corporate career to the uncertainty of a full-time author is the epitome of the creative leap many writers dream of—and fear.In our interview, Pip shared the pivotal decision to step away from the bank, admitting she didn’t know who she was without that career. Writing, however, quickly became the spark she needed.“I owed it to myself to invest in the thing that brought me back to life.”This commitment to her craft—spending nine months meticulously rewriting and learning the rules after a fast first draft—is a vital lesson for anyone considering the pivot to professional writing.Choosing Indie: The Power of Creative Control.Pip’s success story isn’t just about winning an award; it’s a monumental win for self-publishing. She made a conscious decision to forego the traditional route, choosing instead to publish independently via Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).For Pip, this choice was essential for maintaining creative control and ensuring authentic representation. Her book, Pyg, is a queer retelling of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. Having grown up feeling a “drought of sapphic representation in mainstream media,” self-publishing provided the direct platform she needed to share nuanced, relatable stories without waiting for permission from traditional “gatekeepers.” This path champions the idea that diverse voices don’t need validation from the establishment to find their audience.Pyg and the Art of Reclaiming Your Life. The winning novel, Pyg, is a high-heeled burst of chaos and transformation. Inspired partly by her own life milestone and the feeling of being lost when you’re supposed to have it figured out, Pip describes the book as a story about “getting a grip of your life—letting go of the bad stuff to create space for the good.” It explores themes of kindness, compassion, and radical self-acceptance.Pip credits the success of Pyg partly to the lessons learned while writing her first novel, where she realized the necessity of mastering the craft. The resulting work captivated readers and judges alike, leading to the unprecedented success of winning the £20,000 prize.Buy PYG here. The Validation of a Lifetime. The £20,000 Kindle Storyteller Award celebrates the best self-published book of the year, blending bestseller rankings and reader reviews with the opinions of a distinguished judging panel. The Bold Move: Why a Bestselling Author Swapped 'Sweet' Fiction for Gritty Irish Gothic.

The challenge every successful debut author faces is the pressure to repeat themselves. When we recently sat down with acclaimed Irish author Chloe Michelle Howarth (Author of the Nero-shortlisted Sunburn), we learned why she made the bold choice to defy expectations and pivot her career completely. Her new book, Heap Earth Upon It, is a striking departure: a dark, 1960s-set Gothic novel miles away from the contemporary, coming-of-age tone of her debut. This article breaks down the three most valuable insights Chloe shared on creative fulfillment, editing mastery, and writing with purpose.1. Creative Fulfillment Demands a Genre Pivot.Chloe’s first novel, Sunburn, was a critical and commercial success, leading to an obvious question: why not write Sunburn 2?Chloe’s answer was pure creative drive. She admitted that she chose the complete opposite direction—a dark, gritty 1960s Gothic—simply because she felt she had to prove to herself that she could do something else. The setting of the new novel was key: a small, quiet, rural village in the depths of January. As Chloe explained, that atmospheric choice naturally lends itself to the Gothic, demanding new language, new emotions, and a different type of bite than her previous work. For writers struggling with a second project, her advice is clear: do what excites you, not what you think the audience (or publisher) expects.2. The Hardest, Most Necessary Editing Lesson.Whether you are writing a sweet romance or a haunting Gothic novel, this single piece of editorial advice, which Chloe received from her agent, is a game-changer: “Less can be more.”Chloe confessed that she loves “over-the-top, very dramatic, detailed prose,” often describing a statement in five different ways. She was challenged to find where it was necessary to be indulgent and where it was simply not serving the story. The takeaway here for any author is to learn how to refine the work. You must be willing to let go of the dramatic flair you love if a concise sentence serves the story better. Her willingness to be open to this professional critique was ultimately what changed her initial manuscript into the published novel.3. Writing a Legacy: Rural Queerness.Perhaps the most impactful takeaway from our conversation was Chloe’s dedication to defining her own writing legacy. When asked what she hopes her work will be remembered for, she emphasized her focus on rural Irish queerness. As she notes, queer experiences are far more often depicted in urban spaces, making her depiction of a nuanced, isolated existence in a smaller community a vital counter-narrative.Her advice for writers aiming to be more inclusive? Write from a genuine place. Don’t feel the need to crowbar diverse characters in to “tick a box.” Instead, write the character as a full person first, and then let their specific experience be a secondary, natural layer, rather than the defining element. You can dive into the full conversation with Chloe Michelle Howarth, including her thoughts on balancing multiple narrative viewpoints, her unorganised “pantser” process, and her essential book recommendation, by watching the full video below:WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW OR LISTEN ON YOUR FAVOURITE PODCAST PLATFORM: Chloe Michelle Howarth on Writing Irish Gothic Fiction & Her Queer Rural Legacy (HEAP EARTH UPON IT & SUNBURN)Join our brand new community on our Stanstore! From 107 Rejections to Bestselling Rom-Coms: A Chat with Sharon M. Peterson on Perseverance, Laughter, and Life with ADHD.

We had the pleasure of hosting USA Today Bestselling Author Sharon M. Peterson. If you’re a fan of witty romantic comedies, an aspiring writer looking for a shot of inspiration, or anyone navigating the creative process with ADHD, this is an interview you absolutely don’t want to miss.Sharon’s journey to becoming a beloved rom-com author is nothing short of extraordinary. Imagine receiving 107 rejections for your first novel. Most of us would have packed it in. Not Sharon. Her story is a powerful testament to the fact that perseverance truly is “90% of it.”Why We Need Laughter (Especially Now.)As a former middle school teacher, Sharon found her calling in humor. She explained that she writes romantic comedies because, in her words, “laughter is hopeful.” In a world that often feels heavy, her books offer a delightful escape—a chance to find joy and cope with life’s stresses through heartwarming stories and genuine belly laughs. The Unspoken Chapter: Writing with ADHD.One of the most candid and impactful parts of our conversation revolved around Sharon’s adult diagnosis of ADHD. This realization was a turning point, shedding light on why external deadlines were always crucial for her focus and productivity. She also highlighted the often-misunderstood representation of ADHD, especially in women, and shared her own “aha!” moment connecting with others who navigate similar challenges. This discussion wasn’t just personal; it was packed with actionable advice. Sharon generously shared her top tips for maintaining focus and boosting productivity—strategies that resonate deeply whether you have ADHD or simply juggle a busy life:* The Brain Dump Before Bed: A simple yet powerful technique to clear your mind and reduce anxiety by writing down all your next-day tasks before you sleep.* The 20-Minute Alarm: Turn writing into a game! Set a timer for 20 minutes and challenge yourself to beat your previous word count. It’s a fantastic dopamine boost.* Minimize Distractions: Utilize focus modes on your word processor, eliminate distracting tabs, and even turn off the word count display to stay immersed in your story.Diving into The Fix Up.We also shone a spotlight on Sharon’s latest novel, The Fix Up. This “grumpy sunshine” forced-proximity rom-com introduces us to Ellie, a single mom, and Gil, a secret grandson, who are forced to co-inherit a property in charming Two Hearts, Texas.Sharon revealed a personal connection to Ellie—her protagonist also has adult-diagnosed ADHD, making this book a particularly challenging but rewarding one to write. And for those who love practical life hacks, you’ll be fascinated by Ellie’s unique Sticky-Note System for managing her “chaotic brain”—a system divided into “Now,” “Soon,” and “In the Future” tasks.Beyond the Books: Poodles, Success, and What’s Next. From her hilarious confession about a lifelong poodle phobia (it’s a “fight or flight” response, she assures us!) to her heartfelt definition of success—making people smile and laugh—Sharon offered a glimpse into the person behind the pages. And for those eagerly awaiting more, she teased an exciting new book in the Two Hearts series, featuring the character Iris! This interview was truly a masterclass in resilience, a deep dive into the craft of writing, and a touching conversation about embracing one’s unique brain. Whether you’re a seasoned author or just starting your writing journey, there’s so much wisdom to gain from Sharon M. Peterson.Listen to the full podcast or watch the interview here:Don’t forget to check out Sharon M. From Self-Doubt to Sunday Times Bestseller: B.P. Walter on His Writing Journey, The Dinner Guest, and His Secret to Success.

In the world of writing, the path to becoming a published author is often shrouded in mystery. For many, it's a journey filled with rejection, self-doubt, and the tireless pursuit of a story. But what happens when that journey not only leads to publication, but to a place on the prestigious Sunday Times Bestseller list? This is the story of B.P. Walter, a master of psychological thrillers and horror. In a fascinating interview on The Writing Community Chat Show podcast, Walter shares his insights on crafting compelling fiction, the power of persistence, and how a surprising change of plans turned his dream into a full-time career. The Turning Point: When a Pandemic Helped Launch a Bestseller. One of the most compelling parts of the interview is the behind-the-scenes look at how Walter’s third book, The Dinner Guest, became a game-changer. Despite having two previous novels published, it was this book that captured the attention of readers and the industry. He reveals a stroke of good timing: the book was released in April 2021, just as UK retail shops were reopening after lockdown. People poured into bookshops, and The Dinner Guest was ready and waiting to be discovered. This momentum, combined with an "incredible promotion," propelled the book to number one on the Times chart, changing his life and allowing him to commit to writing full-time.Demystifying the Writing Process. For aspiring authors, B.P. Walter offers invaluable, practical advice. He candidly discusses how his writing process has evolved over 10 books. Initially, he didn't focus on word count, but a tight deadline forced him to adopt a more disciplined approach. Now, he aims for 3,000 words a day when actively drafting a manuscript.Perhaps his most surprising tip came from the Faber Academy, where he learned the power of planning. He now meticulously plans his novels chapter by chapter with a short summary for each, a method he now considers essential. Walter believes that knowing where the story is going allows for a more structured and efficient creative flow.Crafting Fear: Tips for Thriller, Horror & Gothic WritersB.P. Walter is a true genre-jumper, and he shared his best advice for writers tackling psychological thrillers, horror, and Gothic fiction.* For Horror: He suggests writers consider what genuinely scares them personally. While not every detail has to be autobiographical, drawing on personal fears can help conjure a more authentic sense of dread for the reader.* For Psychological Thrillers: Walter emphasizes the importance of rhythm. He advises writers to pay close attention to the pacing of the plot, ensuring twists and climaxes happen at the right moments to keep readers hooked.* For Gothic Fiction: He describes this genre as being all about atmosphere and feeling. He recommends that aspiring writers read extensively within the genre to understand how to create that unsettling vibe.A New Mystery on the Horizon. In the interview, Walter offers an exciting pitch for his new book, The Winter Visitor. He describes it as his "most Agatha Christie-ish book" yet—a murder mystery set in a Scottish castle during a storm. When a mysterious stranger is found dead with a Christmas ornament in his heart, everyone in the locked-down castle becomes a suspect.Connect with B.P. Walter:* Instagram: @BPWalterAuthor* Twitter: @BarnabyWalter* Buy his books: Available on Amazon, Waterstones, and Audible. This conversation with B.P. Walter is a masterclass for anyone interested in the art of writing and publishing. It’s a powerful reminder that success often comes from a combination of hard work, adaptability, and the courage to keep going. To watch the full interview and learn more from B.P. Love, Power & Vampires: Kat Kingsley on The Serpent’s Bride.

This week on The Writing Community Chat Show, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Katherine “Kat” Kingsley— on one of the most exciting days of her career: the launch of her brand-new novel, The Serpent’s Bride.Dark, romantic, and deliciously dangerous, this novel takes readers deep into a world of vampire clans, mafia power struggles, and forbidden love. But Kat’s journey to release day is just as compelling as the story she’s put on the page. From Fanfiction to Fantasy Worlds.Like many authors, Kat started out writing fanfiction — a space where creativity thrives and stories can be shared freely with passionate readers. But instead of staying there, she built on that experience to create her own original worlds and characters. Her move into fantasy and romance wasn’t just a change of genre — it was a bold step into telling stories that are wholly her own, and The Serpent’s Bride is the thrilling proof of how far she’s come. The Allure of Villain Romance. One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation was Kat’s take on the villain romance trend. Unlike straightforward good vs. evil tales, her stories blur the line between right and wrong, exploring morally grey characters who challenge our expectations of love, loyalty, and desire.Kat shared how she balances dark themes with emotional truth — and how one unforgettable moment of receiving hate mail actually deepened her understanding of how readers interpret the line between fantasy and reality.Writing Without a Map.Not every author outlines their books. Some prefer to “pants” — writing by the seat of their pants and letting the story unfold as it comes. Kat proudly claims her place in the pantser camp, and in our interview she offered thoughtful advice for writers who embrace spontaneity in their process. Her personal definition of success? It’s not about sales charts or reviews. It’s about finishing the work, putting it into the world, and connecting with readers who find themselves changed by the story.Watch the Full Interview. Our chat with Kat is full of insights, inspiration, and a lot of fun. Ciara Blume Interview | Bestselling Cozy Fantasy Author on Midlife Creativity, Indie Publishing & Natural Magic.

When life feels overwhelming, we often reach for stories that make the world feel lighter, warmer, and a little more magical. That’s exactly what bestselling author Ciara Blume offers her readers and why she’s become one of the most talked-about voices in cozy fantasy today. Her Natural Magic Series didn’t just land well with readers, it exploded. In less than six months, her debut racked up over 2 million page reads and more than 1,000 glowing reviews, quickly climbing Amazon bestseller charts in multiple categories. That’s the kind of success many authors dream of… but Ciara did it while starting her author career at midlife. And that’s what makes her story so powerful.Midlife Magic: Reinvention & Creativity. While many people see midlife as a point of slowing down, Ciara saw it as the perfect moment to dive in. As her son left for college, she set out to build the author career she’d long imagined. With her background as a copywriter and a Creative Writing degree from Johns Hopkins, she brought a rare mix of storytelling skill and business savvy. But she also brought perspective. Instead of rushing to secure a traditional publishing deal, Ciara chose indie publishing as her first choice, a decision that gave her creative control, flexibility, and the ability to build her author business on her own terms. Why Cozy Fantasy Matters Right Now.Ciara’s books are uplifting, humorous, and occasionally magical — the very definition of cozy fantasy. But this isn’t just escapism. History shows that whimsical, enchanting fiction often thrives during times of division and stress. Alice in Wonderland and The Narnia Chronicles appeared during turbulent eras, offering readers something restorative.Ciara’s stories pick up that mantle. They feature themes of found family, second chances, and women reclaiming their inherent magic at any age. In a world where many of us feel disconnected, her novels remind us of the healing power of wonder.Watch Our Interview with Ciara Blume. This Friday on The Writing Community Chat Show, we’ll sit down with Ciara to talk about:* Why cozy fantasy is more radical than it looks.* How fiction can serve as self-care and reduce stress.* The challenges and triumphs of building a book business at midlife.* Why natural magic resonates so deeply with modern readers.Whether you’re an aspiring writer, a lover of fantasy, or someone who just needs a little spark of enchantment, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss.💡 Support Authors, Support CreativityThe Writing Community Chat Show is now a registered CIC (Community Interest Company). Why a Top Publicist Wrote Her Own Bestseller: A Conversation with Georgina Moore.

Georgina Moore is an author and seasoned book publicist with a long-standing career in the publishing industry. She worked behind the scenes managing publicity for major authors such as Patrick Gale, Penny Vincenzi, and Maggie O'Farrell before writing her own debut novel, The Garnett Girls. This novel is a family drama set on the Isle of Wight that has received praise from authors like Lucy Foley and Jill Mansell.✍️ The Insider's Journey: From Publicist to Bestselling AuthorIn a recent live stream, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Georgina Moore, a name well-known to industry insiders and now celebrated by readers worldwide. Having spent years as a top-tier publicist, she's expertly managed campaigns for literary giants, yet it was during the quiet of lockdown that she penned her own story, stepping from the wings into the spotlight as a debut novelist.A New Chapter: Stepping Into the SpotlightGeorgina's transition from promoting other people’s work to creating her own wasn't without its challenges. As she shared in our interview, despite her extensive experience, she initially battled imposter syndrome. She notes, however, that her colleagues and friends were quick to remind her that a publisher's significant investment in The Garnett Girls was proof of its worth. This insightful conversation sheds light on the anxieties and demands that come with the publishing journey, even for those who have navigated it for years. From the Isle of Wight to Eel Pie IslandShe also delves into her latest novel, River of Stars, which is a dual-timeline story. Inspired by her own life on a houseboat, the novel features a 1960s timeline with a young woman's romance with a rock star and a modern-day narrative with her and her granddaughter on Eel Pie Island.Visit her website here.Moore's passion for creating authentic, relatable characters shines through, particularly her commitment to featuring strong female characters over 40 to combat the misrepresentation of this age group in fiction.Advice for Aspiring AuthorsFor all the aspiring writers in our community, Georgina's advice is clear and encouraging: get your words down on paper and write with passion. She suggests ignoring current trends and focusing on the story you are driven to tell. She also stresses the importance of community, emphasising that networking at events and connecting with other writers is crucial for sharing ideas and receiving feedback in an otherwise isolating field.Watch the interview here! From Blogger to Published Author: Laura Gaddis's Inspiring Journey.

Laura Gaddis's journey to becoming a published author is a testament to perseverance and passion. While she always loved writing, she initially pursued a more "practical" career, earning a master's in clinical psychology and working in the field for 14 years. It was after a period of burnout that she decided to pivot back to her true calling, enrolling in an MFA program and reigniting her writing career. A crucial part of this journey was her personal blog, which she started in 2010. Laura believes blogging was instrumental in helping her develop her voice and the discipline of writing for an audience, setting the stage for her future work. The Story Behind Mosaic.Laura's debut memoir, Mosaic, is a powerful and heartfelt account of a five-year period of her life. The book chronicles her journey through immense grief and hope, including pregnancy loss and mental health struggles, ultimately leading to the birth of her daughter. Laura explains that she had to include all these elements to tell a complete story, which is why she named the book Mosaic, as it's a collection of different pieces that come together to form a whole. She discussed the challenging process of turning such personal experiences into a book, highlighting that while writing can be a form of processing trauma, it is not a substitute for therapy.A Life Dedicated to Community and Coaching.Beyond her own writing, Laura is deeply committed to nurturing other writers. She serves as a writing instructor at Miami University and runs a community writing program at the Oxford Community Arts Center. She also works as a writing coach, finding inspiration in her students and clients. Laura's advice to aspiring writers is simple but profound: "just keep going." She believes that true success in writing isn't about external metrics, but about achieving your own personal goals, like publishing a book or helping others with their stories. What's Next for Laura? The interview also provided a sneak peek into Laura's upcoming projects. She is currently working on a historical fiction novel, and she shared her insights on the differences between writing fiction and memoir.Engage and Support The Writing Community. The Writing Community Chat Show is now a registered non-profit, dedicated to supporting authors and sharing their stories. In a wide-ranging and insightful conversation, Jennifer, a master of emotional depth and compelling narratives, shared her journey from a high-stakes career in finance to becoming a globally recognized author. The interview offered a glimpse into her creative process and the powerful themes of her work.Check out her website here. From Finance to Fiction: A Journey of PassionJL Witterick's career path is a story of its own. She was a successful professional in the investment world, even co-founding her own firm, before a documentary inspired her to make a life-altering change. She revealed that her motivation stemmed from the profound emotional connection her books created with readers, a feeling she found more meaningful than the world of finance. Her belief that "anyone can learn to do anything if they want it badly enough" is a powerful message for aspiring writers from any background. Her debut novel, My Mother's Secret, was a testament to this, becoming a worldwide sensation and being translated into 10 languages. The Creative Process: Authenticity and EmotionDuring our chat, JL offered some invaluable advice for other authors. She emphasized that her writing is driven by passion rather than strategy, and that every story, regardless of genre, must feel authentic and be well-researched. She believes the key to a successful novel is creating characters that readers truly care about. She also revealed that her next novel, Stronger, is about 80% complete and is based on a true story from Taiwan. When asked for her most important advice to writers, she offered a classic truth: "everyone's first draft is shit," reminding everyone that perseverance is key.Exploring "The Truth"The conversation also delved into her latest book, You Can't Take the Truth, a young adult dystopian romance. JL described the novel as being about the "transformational power of love." The story is set in a society where people use a dream-inducing drug called "The Truth" to escape their mundane reality. She explained that the love story between the main characters, Flo and Day, serves as the anchor for the plot, which explores themes of appearance versus reality. Her writing style is fast-paced and focuses on the core identity of her characters, making her books accessible and engaging for a broad audience. The book is available now on Amazon. Their steamy affair became a marriage filled with secrets and lies that collapsed as spectacularly as it began.Cut to today: Leslie, who Henry hasn’t heard from since their divorce, bursts into his office and announces that if he doesn’t hand over a quarter-million dollars, they’ll both be killed. Henry dismisses her story as a stupid attempt to steal his money and—despite his still-smoldering desire for her—tells her to get lost. But when he comes home to find his apartment ransacked, he begins to think this time Leslie may be telling the truth. And now that he desperately needs to find her, she’s disappeared again. In a harrowing journey through the glittering heights and shadowy corners of New York City, Henry assembles a team that includes his best friend Aiden, a private investigator named Gabriella, and Aiden’s ex-wife Emma, to track down a missing engagement ring, stay one step ahead of the Russian mob, and uncover the secrets of Leslie’s past. As the screws turn tighter and tighter, Henry must learn who he can trust to uncover the truth…before it’s too late.In What She’s Hiding, Art Bell masterfully weaves a noirish tale of suspense and emotional turbulence as a dangerous woman draws Henry ever further into a high-stakes game that neither one of them may survive.BUY IT HERE!💬 Join the ConversationThis episode is packed with behind-the-scenes stories and valuable insights for writers and creatives. A Conversation with Elly Griffiths at The Harrogate Crime Writers Festival.

If you’ve never had the pleasure of sitting down with Elly Griffiths, let me tell you: it’s like opening the first page of a gripping mystery and realising, with a smile, that you’re in very good hands. This year at The Harrogate Crime Writers Festival, I had the joy of chatting with the legendary author in none other than the Old Swan Library — a place steeped in literary history (yes, the same hotel where Agatha Christie famously vanished to). The couch? Not official. The interview? Absolutely brilliant.Elly Griffiths, bestselling author of the beloved Dr Ruth Galloway series, joined me to talk about her incredible 15-book run (and counting), her thoughts on character longevity, the evolution of crime fiction, and, of course, her impressive streak of 15 consecutive visits to the Harrogate festival. That’s more loyalty than most gym memberships can boast.🖊️ What We Covered:* How her characters have grown across 15 novels.* What draws her back to Harrogate every single year.* The delicate balance between plotting and pantsing.* Her reflections on crime fiction’s place in modern storytelling.* Why she still loves meeting readers face-to-face.It was a quick chat, but one filled with warmth, insight, and plenty of admiration — both ways. Elly was gracious, funny, and as sharp as her writing. Honestly, “Chris on the Couch” might need to become a proper feature if it means more moments like this.Whether you’re a longtime Elly Griffiths fan or you’ve just wandered into the world of crime fiction, this is one conversation you’ll want to hear.🎧 Listen to the podcast episode above.📺 Or watch the full interview here:Let us know what you think — and don’t forget to share it with your fellow bookworms, festival goers, and mystery lovers.Until next time,CJ AggettThe Writing Community Chat Show This is a public episode.
