PBM Truth, Cash-Based Pharmacy, and Psychedelics in Medicine | TWIRx

THIS WEEK IN PHARMACY PBM Truth, Cash-Based Pharmacy, and Psychedelics in Medicine Presented by SuiteRx Pharmacy Software Technologies Learn more at SuiteRx.com Episode Overview On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, Todd Eury brings together two timely conversations focused on pharmacy transformation, advocacy, clinical education, and the future role of pharmacists in healthcare. First, Todd welcomes Brad Hart, owner of Forest Park Pharmacy, a cash-based independent pharmacy model challenging the traditional reimbursement structure many pharmacies operate under. Brad has become a powerful advocate for pharmacy transparency, using TikTok and social media to expose current PBM practices, share data, and speak directly to patients, pharmacy owners, and policymakers about the realities facing independent pharmacies. Brad’s message is clear: patients deserve transparency, pharmacy owners deserve fair treatment, and the profession needs more voices willing to educate the public with facts and truth. In the second half of the episode, Todd is joined by Dr. Colby Burns and Dr. Andy Krut from the Psychedelic Pharmacists Association. This discussion helps set the groundwork for understanding psychedelics in medicine, the evolving role of pharmacists in psychedelic education, and the clinical potential of psychotropic therapies historically limited by regulation, stigma, and lack of provider education. As interest in psychedelic-assisted care grows, pharmacists must be part of the conversation. Dr. Burns and Dr. Krut explain why pharmacist education, medication safety, and clinical understanding are essential as healthcare explores emerging approaches to mental health, trauma, pain, and complex patient care. Modern Pharmacy Media and the Rise of Functional Medicine | TWIRx

On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we bring together three powerful voices shaping the future of pharmacy, independent practice, functional medicine, and healthcare transformation.   First, we welcome Kris Rhea, MBA, Contributing Editor with Dispense Times, a digital publication dedicated to supporting independent community pharmacy owners across the United States. Kris brings a business-focused perspective on pharmacy operations, growth strategy, workflow efficiency, data-driven decision-making, and market positioning. His work with Dispense Times helps independent pharmacists navigate today’s rapidly changing healthcare landscape, including PBM pressures, evolving patient expectations, regulatory challenges, and the need for sustainable business models that keep local pharmacies strong.   We also speak with James Maskell, founder of Evolution of Medicine, an organization built to inspire, equip, and unite functional and integrative medicine practitioners. Evolution of Medicine provides education, practice-building resources, and community for clinicians who are working to build thriving practices rooted in whole-person care. James brings a national perspective on the movement toward functional medicine, community-based care, prevention, and new models that empower practitioners to better serve patients beyond the limitations of conventional healthcare.   Our third guest is Marina Buksov, PharmD, a pharmacist, herbalist, educator, podcast host, and holistic health consultant. After earning her PharmD from St. John’s University and graduating Summa Cum Laude in 2013, Marina entered pharmacy eager to serve patients, but quickly recognized that traditional allopathic pharmacy did not fully align with her deeper calling to help people thrive through prevention, root-cause care, plant medicine, and sustainable wellness strategies. Her experience behind the pharmacy counter and as a patient herself inspired her to pursue health coaching, nutrition, functional medicine, and clinical herbalism. Today, Marina helps pharmacists and healthcare professionals explore natural-minded career paths and build meaningful work that bridges pharmacology, herbal therapeutics, and holistic care.   Together, this episode explores where pharmacy is headed: independent pharmacy survival, business model innovation, functional medicine, patient-centered care, pharmacist reinvention, and the growing demand for healthcare professionals who can connect science, prevention, and real-world practice.   Listen to This Week in Pharmacy on the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Pharmacy’s future is being built by those willing to challenge the current model, support independent practice, and expand the role of pharmacists as trusted healthcare providers.

Health Security, Specialty Care & the OTC Products Patients Trust | TWIRx

On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we examine three major forces shaping healthcare today: the global impact of conflict on health security, the continued evolution of personalized specialty pharmacy care, and the over-the-counter products patients rely on most.   We open the show with Aman Gupta, Managing Partner, Asia-Pacific at SPAG FINN Partners, and contributor author at MedikaLife. Aman joins TWIRx to discuss his latest MedikaLife article, which argues that global conflict is quietly undermining health security by redirecting funding, attention, and infrastructure away from healthcare and toward defense priorities.   As military spending rises, health systems—especially in low- and middle-income countries—face growing pressure from shrinking access, rising costs, workforce shortages, disrupted supply chains, weakened disease surveillance, and reduced emergency preparedness. Conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan demonstrate how attacks on healthcare systems, displacement, malnutrition, and shortages of essential medicines can rapidly turn health access into a survival issue. Aman urges policymakers to treat health as strategic security infrastructure, not as a secondary social expense.   TWIRx also gives a special shout out to the Indian Pharmaceutical Association, recognizing its continued leadership and advocacy for the pharmacy profession.   Next, we welcome Dr. Chris Antypas, PharmD, with Perigon Pharmacy 360, for a discussion on how specialty pharmacy is becoming increasingly personalized. As complex therapies continue to advance, pharmacists are playing a critical role in ensuring medications and treatment plans are customized to optimize patient care. We explore how technology, workflow processes, clinical expertise, and pharmacists who deeply understand specific disease states are essential to successful specialty pharmacy outcomes.   To wrap up the episode, returning guest Shanley Chien Pierce, Senior Editor, Health at U.S. News & World Report, joins us to review the latest OTC medicine and health product evaluations. Top-rated products include Children’s Delsym for coughs, Unisom for sleep, and Pedialyte for electrolytes, along with skincare favorites such as La Roche-Posay for retinol and Aquaphor for lip balm.   For the full list covering more than 128 categories, visit the U.S. News Best OTC Medicine & Health Products rankings.   Sponsored by Perigon Pharmacy 360 Listen & Subscribe Stay connected with This Week in Pharmacy and the Pharmacy Podcast Network for conversations with pharmacy leaders, healthcare innovators, policy experts, and industry voices shaping the future of care.

Does Pharmacy Have an Identity Crisis? | TWIRx

On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we examine two major forces reshaping the profession: the unfinished business of pharmacist provider status and the legal landscape around direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical distribution. In part one, Erik Abel, PharmD, MBA, discusses his May 2026 analysis, “So Pharmacists Want to Be a Provider: Where the Profession Lost Its Way and Perhaps a Path to Get Back.” Abel argues that pharmacy’s provider-status challenge is not a lack of clinical evidence, but a lack of operational infrastructure: credentialing, payer contracting, revenue cycle management, interoperability, and scalable business models. In part two, Darshan Kulkarni, PharmD, Esq., joins the show to discuss direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical distribution, legal risk, regulatory scrutiny, telehealth-linked prescribing, manufacturer strategy, and what pharmacists need to understand as drug distribution moves closer to the patient. This week in pharmacy news, Pittsburgh-area pharmacies continue to face uneven access to Adderall and other ADHD medications, years after the FDA first identified shortages in 2022. Patients are still calling multiple pharmacies, switching medications, rationing doses, or going without treatment as availability varies by dosage, formulation, manufacturer, and wholesaler. Pharmacists are also using medication therapy management to protect older adults from preventable medication-related harm. MTM reviews can identify risky prescriptions and OTC products, including diphenhydramine, duplicate therapies, drug interactions, and long-term proton pump inhibitor use that may need reassessment. In 340B news, CVS Health is facing federal lawsuits from major health systems alleging CVS Specialty and WellPartner improperly retained approximately $250 million in savings that should have gone back to covered entities. The litigation adds pressure to debates over PBM integration, contract pharmacy arrangements, and 340B transparency. On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are pressing the Department of Defense to commit to annual audits of the TRICARE pharmacy contract as concerns continue around PBM conflicts of interest, reimbursement practices, network adequacy, and access for independent and community pharmacies.

U.S. Supreme Court and Generic Drugs | TWIRx

This week, This Week in Pharmacy examines several stories shaping the business, clinical, and legal future of pharmacy practice. In TWIRx News from Pharmacy Times from Megan Maroney, PharmD, BCPP, FAAPP, focused on antidepressant use, withdrawal concerns, deprescribing, and shared decision-making. The key takeaway: patients should never stop antidepressants abruptly. Pharmacists can play a vital role in reducing stigma, educating patients, and supporting safe conversations about tapering, side effects, and long-term treatment. In health technology news, FDB research presented at the 2026 AMIA Amplify Informatics Conference found that patient-specific, risk-based medication guidance reduced pharmacy alert volume by 70% in a high-volume community pharmacy setting. The model consolidates alerts into one actionable message tied to the patient’s most relevant risk, helping reduce alert fatigue and improve workflow. Finally, we review a federal court ruling in Eli Lilly’s lawsuit against Houston-based Empower Pharmacy over compounded tirzepatide versions of Mounjaro and Zepbound. The judge dismissed key federal trademark and Texas unfair competition claims, while allowing other state claims to continue. Andy Crawford, with Keysource is back on TWIRx talking about the U.S. Supreme Court taking up Hikma Pharmaceuticals USA Inc. v. Amarin Pharma Inc., a case that could significantly affect generic drug competition. At issue is whether Hikma’s marketing materials and public communications around its generic version of Amarin’s fish oil-based cardiovascular drug improperly promoted a still-patented use. Hikma and the broader generic industry argue the case is about protecting “skinny label” rules, which allow generics to carve out patented indications while still bringing lower-cost medications to market. For pharmacists, the decision could influence generic availability, substitution confidence, pricing pressure, and how manufacturers communicate with providers and pharmacies. Thanks to our sponsors, CassianRx and IPC, for supporting independent pharmacy, innovation, and the future of patient-centered care.

Expanding Long-Term Care Pharmacy at Home, Delivery Logistics, AI, and Healthcare Misinformation | TWIRx

Sponsored by Rx4Route This Week in Pharmacy returns with a timely two-part episode focused on pharmacy operations, medication access, and the growing responsibility of healthcare communicators in the age of AI. In our first segment, we welcome Joseph Dymowski, PharmD, CEO of Centennial Pharmacy Services, and Doniyor Sattarov, Vice President of Operations at Rx4Route, for a conversation about expanding long-term care pharmacy at home. As more patients age in place, pharmacies must rethink delivery, logistics, documentation, and patient communication as essential parts of care. Delivery is no longer just a convenience. It is a critical extension of pharmacy services. Reliable routing, real-time tracking, and proof of delivery help pharmacies improve adherence, reduce operational friction, and build stronger trust with patients, caregivers, and providers. Expanding LTC pharmacy-at-home services, building scalable delivery workflows, improving route efficiency, using delivery technology to support compliance, and why logistics may become a major competitive advantage for pharmacies. This episode is sponsored by Rx4Route, pharmacy delivery software designed to help pharmacies streamline delivery operations, optimize routes, track orders, and improve proof-of-delivery workflows. In our second segment, we speak with **Vincent Grippi, CEO of Grippi Media, about the dangers of AI-generated misinformation and the higher standard required in healthcare communications. As AI becomes more common in content creation, communications professionals must protect accuracy, credibility, and patient trust. In healthcare, misinformation can influence clinical understanding, damage reputations, and create confusion across the industry. That is why content for healthcare professionals must be reviewed, verified, and guided by human judgment. AI misinformation in healthcare, responsible content development, source verification, editorial review, subject-matter expertise, and how communicators can use AI without sacrificing trust. This episode connects two critical forms of trust in pharmacy: operational trust at the patient’s door and informational trust across every communication channel. Featured Guests: Joseph Dymowski, PharmD— CEO, Centennial Pharmacy Services Doniyor Sattarov— Vice President of Operations, Rx4Route Vincent Grippi— CEO, Grippi Media

TJM Labs and Pharmacists in Politics | TWIRx

Congratulations to Logan Eury and his new wife Emily, got married today, May 1, 2026!  This C.O. Bigelow Collab Introduces the 188-Year-Old Pharmacy to a New Generation Abbode is taking over the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy-approved shop for a month-long pop-up. https://fashionista.com/2026/05/co-bigelow-abbode-pop-up-carolyn-bessette-impact  The article highlights how a pop-up and renewed interest in C.O. Bigelow has been fueled by the cultural resurgence of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist style, amplified by media and social buzz. This renewed attention has driven significant foot traffic and sales, showing how storytelling, nostalgia, and “quiet luxury” aesthetics can translate into real retail impact.   Q&A: Mayo Clinic leaders share strategies for managing high-cost drugs without breaking the bank | Asembia AXS26 Summit https://www.managedhealthcareexecutive.com/view/q-a-mayo-clinic-leaders-share-strategies-for-managing-high-cost-drugs-without-breaking-the-bank-asembia-axs26-summit Mayo Clinic leaders emphasize that managing high-cost drugs requires clear definitions, structured formulary review processes, and multidisciplinary collaboration to balance cost, access, and clinical value. They highlight the importance of evaluating safety, efficacy, financial impact, and site-of-care decisions together, while noting that non-340B systems face increasing pressure from rising costs and reimbursement constraints. Ultimately, success depends on stronger alignment between health systems, manufacturers, and payers to sustain access without compromising quality of care.  Where Gross-to-net Pressure Actually Lives After Launch Today’s guest post comes from Cindy Baksh, Chief Product Officer at ConnectiveRx. https://www.drugchannels.net/2026/05/where-gross-to-net-pressure-actually.html The article explains that “gross-to-net pressure” isn’t driven by a single factor, but by a combination of rebates, discounts, fees, and policy changes that continue to reshape how drug pricing actually works behind the scenes. As the industry shifts toward a “net pricing” model, traditional rebate-driven strategies are weakening, forcing manufacturers, PBMs, and pharmacies to rethink how value and profits are generated. Today's featured guest is Dr. Ndidiamaka Okpareke PharmD for Congress Dr. Ndidiamaka “Didi” Okpareke, PharmD, is a pharmacist, entrepreneur, and political candidate running for Congress in New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District. A first-generation Nigerian-American, she built her career in healthcare after graduating from the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy and went on to found and lead a successful compounding pharmacy serving her community.  Motivated by nearly two decades of patient care experience, Okpareke entered the political arena to address challenges such as healthcare access, rising costs, and the shortage of providers in New Mexico. Running as a Republican, she emphasizes strengthening healthcare systems, supporting economic growth, and preserving opportunity for future generations, positioning herself as a community-focused leader bringing frontline healthcare insight into public policy.  This special episode highlights how TJM Labs is redefining pharmacy operations through AI-driven automation, bringing together insights from industry leaders Bhavesh Patel, PharmD—CEO of Carepoint Pharmacy—and Jonathan Adly, PharmD, MBA—CEO of TJM Labs. At the center of the conversation is how modern pharmacies are facing rising prescription volumes, staffing constraints, and increasing operational complexity, and why traditional manual workflows can no longer keep pace. TJM Labs addresses this challenge by deploying AI-powered “digital workers” that automate tasks like prescription intake, data entry, and patient communication—allowing pharmacy teams to shift their focus back to patient care and clinical decision-making.  Through the lens of both operator and innovator, the discussion explores how AI is not replacing pharmacy professionals, but augmenting them—reducing burnout, improving accuracy, and enabling scalable growth. With automation handling up to the majority of repetitive workload and delivering measurable ROI, TJM Labs represents a new model where technology and pharmacy expertise work together to create more efficient, patient-centered operations.

Clearway Health, John Nosta, Perigon 360, and Psychedelics in Practice | TWIRx

TWIRx News: The FDA plans to remove 12 peptide bulk drug substances from Category 2 of the Section 503A compounding list after their nominations were withdrawn. For compounders, the key issue is that this change does not automatically make compounding these substances permissible, leaving pharmacies exposed to ongoing regulatory uncertainty until the FDA makes further decisions. A nationwide Class II recall has been issued for Xanax XR 3 mg tablets in 60-count bottles, lot 8177156, after the product failed dissolution testing. Pharmacists should immediately locate and quarantine affected stock while reminding patients not to stop benzodiazepine therapy suddenly without direction from a healthcare provider. Community pharmacies are taking on a larger role in wound care by serving as an accessible first point of contact for patients with minor injuries. Pharmacists can help assess wounds, recommend appropriate over-the-counter treatment, watch for warning signs of complications, and refer patients for higher-level care when needed. Accountability, Innovation, and Access Across Care | TWIRx

This Week in Pharmacy 04-10-2026 Sponsored by Outcomes and Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC) On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we dig into another high-impact week across the profession with TWIRx news, practice transformation, oncology leadership, pediatric research innovation, and a look ahead to one of specialty pharmacy’s biggest gatherings of the year. This week’s episode is powered by our sponsors, Outcomes and Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC), organizations continuing to support independent pharmacy innovation, patient engagement, and pharmacy performance. In the TWIRx News segment, we cover four important stories shaping the national conversation in pharmacy. First, we discuss the federal fraud case involving a Dearborn Heights pharmacy owner who pleaded guilty in a $1.9 million health care fraud scheme. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Rabih Hamdan admitted to conspiring to submit false claims for prescription drugs that were either medically unnecessary or never actually dispensed, impacting Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Federal prosecutors say the fraudulent claims totaled at least $1.9 million over a five-year period. Next, we look at oncology pharmacy leadership through the lens of Amy Seung, who is stepping into the HOPA presidency during a period of rapid acceleration in cancer care. In Pharmacy Times, Seung describes a practice environment where new approvals, indications, toxicity data, and clinical questions are arriving weekly or even daily. She positions HOPA as a key bridge between emerging science and real-world implementation, with this year’s conference emphasizing bispecific therapies, real-world evidence, supportive care, and toxicity management. We also spotlight a powerful research update from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, where professor David Drewry and student researchers are advancing work on diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), an aggressive pediatric brain cancer with limited treatment options and an average life expectancy of about one year after diagnosis. The team is using an open-science model to accelerate discovery while keeping future therapies more affordable, and they are working with M4K Pharma to advance an ALK2 inhibitor toward a Phase 1 clinical trial. Finally, we feature a practice transformation story from Drug Topics: Gregg Jones, MBA, RPh, made the leap from corporate pharmacy leadership to launching Compass Core Pharmacy, described as Rhode Island’s first cost-plus pharmacy model. The cash-only model focuses on generics, uses AI-driven ordering, serves a growing veterinary segment with more than 1,400 pet prescriptions, and operates as a CLIA-waived pharmacy offering point-of-care testing. It is a compelling example of how pharmacists are reengineering care delivery outside the traditional reimbursement framework. We are also getting ready for Asembia 2026 in Las Vegas, where the Pharmacy Podcast Network will once again provide press coverage with support from Clearway Health. You can find us at booth 1805, where we’ll be capturing conversations that matter across specialty pharmacy, access, patient support, innovation, and care delivery. Our first featured interview is with Nick Baird, Director of Marketing with Outcomes, where we will explore the growing role of pharmacy engagement, patient activation, and value creation in community-based care. Our second interview features Dr. Jen Hammons, PharmD, DrPH, with Health Wagon, a vital community healthcare organization dedicated to serving medically underserved patients through an expanding network of care. In 2024 alone, Health Wagon served 7,291 unique patients through 21,615 patient encounters, supported by five mobile health units, three stationary clinic sites, a dental clinic, a vision clinic, and a pharmacy. Known for hosting one of the nation’s largest health outreach efforts of its kind, Health Wagon continues to expand its impact through the dedication of staff, volunteers, trustees, partners, donors, and supporters. Pharmacy Profit Summit 2026 + Rare Disease Day 2026 | TWIRx

On this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, we spotlight two major conversations shaping the future of pharmacy practice in 2026. First, we welcome Dr. Lisa Faast, PharmD, founder of DiversifyRx, to discuss the Pharmacy Profit Summit 2026 and how independent pharmacies can strengthen margins, diversify revenue streams, and build sustainable growth models in today’s reimbursement environment. Then, we turn to Rare Disease Day 2026 with Richard Faris PharmD, Chief Commercial & Clinical Officer at and PANTHERx Rare, to discuss specialty pharmacy leadership, pharmacist impact, and new patient feedback data revealing communication gaps in rare disease care. Segment 1: Pharmacy Profit Summit 2026 Guest: Dr. Lisa Faast, PharmD | Founder, DiversifyRx Dr. Faast joins us to break down the vision behind Pharmacy Profit Summit 2026 — an event designed to equip pharmacy owners with practical strategies to increase profitability while maintaining clinical excellence. Key Topics Covered: • Why independent pharmacies must move beyond traditional dispensing revenue  • Diversification strategies including niche services and high-value offerings  • Real-world financial benchmarks pharmacy owners should track  • How mindset, leadership, and data discipline drive sustainable profitability  • The importance of collaboration and shared intelligence among pharmacy entrepreneurs The Pharmacy Profit Summit is not just about revenue — it’s about equipping pharmacy owners to compete intelligently in a rapidly consolidating healthcare market. Segment 2: Rare Disease Day 2026 Guest: Richard Faris, PharmD | PANTHERx Rare In recognition of Rare Disease Day 2026, we are honored to welcome Richard Ferris, PharmD, to discuss the critical role pharmacists play in specialty pharmacy and rare disease care. PantherRx recently released survey findings examining patient and caregiver experiences within rare disease treatment journeys. Key Study Highlights: • 90% of patients and caregivers report delays due to communication gaps  • 68% report waiting for updates from providers, pharmacies, or insurers  • 90% say they manage the care process themselves  • 72% desire a dedicated care coordinator  • 73% agree it is unclear who is responsible for coordinating rare disease care Despite advances in specialty therapeutics, patients are still asking for the fundamentals: clear communication, coordinated care, and personalized support. Richard discusses: • The growing importance of specialty pharmacists as care coordinators  • Why rare disease patients often feel burdened by system fragmentation  • How specialty pharmacy can close communication gaps  • The need for pharmacist-led continuity in complex therapy management Rare Disease Day reminds us that specialty pharmacy is not only about high-cost medications — it is about human connection, long-term coordination, and advocacy for patients navigating some of the most complex clinical journeys in healthcare.  From business sustainability to patient-centered specialty care, this episode reinforces two realities: Pharmacy must remain financially strong to survive. Pharmacists must remain clinically present to lead. As the profession evolves, profitability and patient advocacy are not opposing forces — they are interdependent pillars of pharmacy’s future. The GCR Wake-Up Call: How Small Buying Decisions Are Crushing (or Saving) Pharmacy Margin | TWIRx

Independent pharmacies are dispensing more prescriptions than ever—but too many are seeing their profits shrink month after month. In this episode of This Week in Pharmacy, hosts Todd Eury and CEO of MatchRx Johny Kello sit down with Saeed Dinno Director of Pharmacy for a group of independent pharmacies in MI. For a practical, plain-English breakdown of one of the most overlooked metrics impacting pharmacy profitability: GCR, let's dive into this! This episode isn’t about policy debates, compliance theory, or vendor hype. It’s a real-world conversation designed to help pharmacy owners, managers, and buyers understand how everyday sourcing and dispensing behaviors directly influence margin—often without anyone realizing it. Saeed explains what GCR actually measures, what it does not measure, and why two pharmacies filling the exact same prescription can end up with completely different financial outcomes. From convenience buying and emergency orders that become routine, to default NDC selection and a disconnect between the buyer and the bench, the episode highlights the subtle habits that quietly erode profitability over time. More importantly, the conversation delivers actionable steps pharmacies can implement immediately. Saeed outlines the core disciplines that improve performance—smarter buying strategy, better alignment between purchasing and dispensing, and simple operational guardrails that don’t slow workflow. The focus is not on “working harder,” but on working differently. The episode closes with a clear, clip-worthy takeaway: one specific action pharmacy leaders can take this month to start moving the needle. If you’ve ever wondered why your pharmacy is busy but the numbers don’t reflect it, this is an episode you’ll want to listen to twice—and put into practice the very next day. Second segment of TWIRx is with Jonathan Adly, CEO of TJM Labs, to discuss his powerful new book, The Innovative Pharmacy: How to Build an 8-Figure Pharmacy One Idea at a Time. At a time when independent pharmacies are being squeezed by rising labor costs, shrinking reimbursements, and increasing operational complexity, Adly delivers a refreshing message: success is still possible—but it requires innovation, clarity, and execution. Jonathan shares why this book is not a “one-size-fits-all” business blueprint, but a collection of real-world frameworks inspired by hundreds of high-performing pharmacies across the U.S. and Canada. We explore the principles behind sustainable growth, including identifying your ideal customer, building scalable systems through automation, simplifying operations, and playing offense when the math works. This conversation is a call to action for pharmacy leaders ready to build smarter, faster, and stronger—one bold idea at a time. This episode of TWIRx is sponsored by MatchRx, TJM Labs, Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC) and Sykes & Company.

The New Pharmacy Playbook: Workforce Strength, AI Clarity, and 340B Reform | TWIRx

This Week in Pharmacy – Friday, December 5th Strengthening the Pharmacy Workforce: A Conversation with Crystal Lennartz Cutting Through the AI Confusion: Shaun Jensen on Smarter Pharmacy Operations The New 340B Reality: Allison Arant on Navigating HRSA’s Rebate Model Welcome to another episode of This Week in Pharmacy, where we bring together the most important conversations, industry insights, and breaking pharmacy news shaping the future of healthcare. Today’s show features a powerhouse lineup of leaders driving innovation across retail pharmacy, technology, consulting, and 340B health-system strategy. 🟦 Segment 1 — Interview with Crystal Lennartz, President of Health Mart & Health Mart Atlas We open the show with a conversation with Crystal Lennartz, President of Health Mart and Health Mart Atlas, about the evolving role of workforce management in independent pharmacies.  📰 TWIRx News — Friday, December 5th A fast roundup of the top stories impacting pharmacy this week: 👉 Humana Exploring Partnership with Mark Cuban Humana is reportedly in discussions with Mark Cuban to explore a potential pharmacy partnership that could disrupt traditional PBM and drug-supply models. The collaboration may reshape how medications are priced and accessed—another sign that alternative pharmacy models are gaining traction. 👉 New Migraine Therapy: Symbravo Pharmacists should be aware of Symbravo, a new dual-action migraine therapy combining meloxicam and rizatriptan. Importantly, the product is non-substitutable, meaning pharmacies must dispense exactly as written. The therapy adds a new tool for acute migraine care but requires careful patient counseling on cardiovascular risks, medication-overuse headaches, and NSAID interactions. 👉 Walgreens Expands Automated Fulfillment Centers Walgreens continues restructuring by expanding its automated micro-fulfillment pharmacy network. Robots are now filling a growing percentage of maintenance prescriptions, allowing pharmacists to refocus on clinical services. The move signals accelerating automation across retail pharmacy as chains seek cost savings and operational efficiency. 🟦 Segment 2 — Interview with Shaun Jensen, CEO of JB Consulting Group Next, we speak with Shaun Jensen, CEO of JB Consulting Group, about the rising confusion many pharmacy operators face around AI adoption. We discuss: Where AI adds true efficiency versus where it’s misunderstood Practical steps for pharmacy owners to implement AI tools How data-driven automation can improve workflow, inventory, prior authorizations, and patient communication The mindset shift required for pharmacies to thrive in an AI-supported future 🟦 Segment 3 — Interview with Allison Arant, SVP of Client Development & Marketing, Clearway Health Our final interview is with Allison Arant from Clearway Health, focusing on the new challenges hospital systems face as HRSA launches the 340B rebate model. Key discussion points: How the rebate model changes operational and financial dynamics for 340B hospitals Why safety-net hospitals caring for large uninsured and underinsured populations are feeling heightened pressure Strategies Clearway Health is deploying to help health systems navigate rising medication costs, compliance demands, and shrinking margins What health-system pharmacies must prepare for heading into 2026 This week’s conversations underscored a unifying theme: the pharmacy industry is entering a period of rapid transformation, driven by new reimbursement models, automation, innovation partnerships, and evolving expectations from both patients and payers. Independent pharmacies, health systems, and specialty operators all face challenges—but also significant opportunities for reinvention, collaboration, and leadership. Thank you for tuning in to This Week in Pharmacy. Stay informed, stay inspired, and keep pushing our profession forward.   Walgreens doubles down on automation to reshape pharmacy operations. The retail pharmacy giant is dramatically expanding its network of robot-powered micro-fulfillment centers (MFCs) — facilities that dispense maintenance medications for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. The goal: serve 5,000+ stores by the end of the year, up from earlier coverage of around 4,800 stores. https://chainstoreage.com/news-briefs/2025-12-05?article=walgreens-expands-automated-pharmacy-fulfillment-network New migraine therapy raises key practice questions for pharmacists. Symbravo — a fixed-dose oral tablet combining meloxicam (an NSAID) and rizatriptan (a triptan) — has been approved for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura, offering a dual-mechanism option targeting both inflammation and serotonin-mediated pathways.  Pharmacists now play a critical role: they must identify patients at risk for medication-overuse headaches, screen for contraindications (e.g., cardiovascular disease, GI risk, or NSAID/triptan interactions), and advocate for comprehensive migraine management beyond just pain relief — including lifestyle adjustments and referrals when needed. https://www.pharmacytimes.com/view/what-pharmacists-should-know-about-symbravo-s-role-and-non-substitutability-in-migraine-care  Humana is reportedly working with Mark Cuban on a potential pharmacy partnership — a development that could shake up how prescriptions are delivered and disrupt traditional middle-man models.  The collaboration would leverage Cuban’s innovative approach to drug pricing and distribution, potentially creating a new channel for medication access that bypasses traditional pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) and large-chain dispensaries. If executed, the partnership could increase competitive pressure on legacy players and reshape the pharmacy supply chain.  For independent pharmacies and pharmacy leaders, this signals a possible shift in how drugs are sourced, priced, and distributed — highlighting the growing influence of alternative pharmacy models and urging traditional pharmacies to adapt or risk being left behind. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-12-04/humana-working-with-mark-cuban-on-potential-pharmacy-partnership   Washington, DC there's a whole bunch of pharmacy people meeting up to rollout the Pharmacists Fight Back Act (PFBA)! If you want to go, LISTEN UP!! You’ll be joining pharmacists and pharmacy owners from more than 17 states, all calling for meaningful pharmacy reimbursement reform NOW. MatchRX presents: Understanding DSCSA and the Road to 2026 | TWIRx

On "This Week in Pharmacy" #TWIRx TWIRx NEWS This Week in Pharmacy News – A trio of developments highlight major shifts and ongoing challenges in pharmacy care: Fruth Pharmacy, a 73-year-old family-owned regional pharmacy chain in West Virginia and Ohio, has been acquired by Walgreens Boots Alliance, with transfer of prescription files and inventory from 16 stores planned for December 3 — the deal underscores how legacy community pharmacies are increasingly consolidating to survive pressure from reimbursement and PBM models. - from Mass Market Retailers https://lnkd.in/emKagG9v At UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the Postgraduate Year One Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program is celebrating 25 years, having trained 163 residents who serve in community pharmacies across North Carolina. Patient Safety & the Direct to Consumer Factor | TWIRx

Special Feature:    Andrew Crawford, Vice President at Keysource talks with TWIRx host Todd Eury about the direct to patient market (Direct to Consumer, DTC) expected to hit $21 billion this year. Pharmacy is evolving fast. When DTC brands move in, pharmacies have a choice...compete or collaborate. Some manufacturers are selling directly to patients at discounted cash prices and cutting out traditional intermediaries. The model is projected to grow 9% a year through 2030, with pharma support services expected to nearly double from $3.2B to $5.7B by 2030.  Driven by cost pressure and new legislation, manufacturers are moving quickly. It is creating more transparency but patients still need guidance, trust, and human care. Pharmacy is being redefined as the bridge that keeps care personal, safe, and local. It is not being replaced, but what will it look like in 10 years?
