Thundarr Road

Noel Thingvall, David May, and Michael May explore the episodes and cities of the Thundarr the Barbarian cartoon in geographical order: not as episodes were produced or aired, but as Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla would have traveled.

  1. 14

Episode 11: Den of the Sleeping Demon

David, Noel, and Michael visit the Grand Canyon to witness Thundarr and Friends' encounter with another escaped slave. But rather than dedicate his life to freeing others, this one wants to awaken a creature with the ability to grant ultimate power to whomever rouses it.

  2. 13

Episode 10: Challenge of the Wizards

Michael, David, and Noel ride again, this time to Las Vegas to watch an apocalyptic Cannonball Run when a wizard coerces Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla into competing for him in a road race against his rivals.

  3. 12

    Episode 9: Harvest of Doom

Noel, Michael, and David are back to discuss Ookla's kidnapping by crocodile-people, Thundarr and Ariel's attempt to rescue him, and the introduction of a great new character. Also, multiple theories and some great conversation about where this takes place and when it fits in the timeline.

  4. 11

Episode 8: Master of the Stolen Sunsword

David, Michael, and Noel are back, but Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla have not yet moved on from the Los Angeles area. They're in Beverly Hills, dealing with a wizard named Yando as well as Thundarr's diminished connection to the Sunsword.

  5. 10

    Episode 7: Fortress of Fear

Still in Los Angeles, Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla encounter slaves that need freeing from possibly the most powerful wizard our heroes have encountered yet. Celebrate the freedom in this freedom-packed episode of freedom.

  6. 9

Episode 6: Valley of the Man-Apes

Heading south along the California coast, Thundarr and Friends reach the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood where they encounter talking apes who are gathering pieces of a secret (but familiar-looking) weapon to use in their war against a beleaguered city of little people. Noel, David, and Michael discuss the homage-heavy episode and whether it lives up to their hopes for it.

  7. 8

Episode 5: Battle of the Barbarians

Thundarr and friends travel to San Francisco's Chinatown where they encounter an evil wizard who hires a barbarian warrior to fight Thundarr. Is the showdown everything we hoped it would be? David, Michael, and Noel talk that out alongside discussions of Chinese stereotypes, the appropriateness of dragons, and the best way to escape a slime pit.

  8. 7

Episode 4: Stalker from the Stars

Michael, David, and Noel try to figure out just where Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla have traveled to. With only a couple of clues to guide them, the fellas have come up with different answers, talking that through before getting to the business at hand involving an ice cavern amusement park, a deadly alien, and a very sick Mok.

  9. 6

Interview with Thundarr writer Buzz Dixon, Part 2

We'll be back on the Road soon with the next recap, but until then, enjoy the second part of our interview with writer Buzz Dixon. Noel talks with Buzz about life after Thundarr with special focus on GI Joe. It's another great conversation with great, new stories that you won't want to miss.

  10. 5

Episode 3: Attack of the Amazon Women

Noel, Michael, and David follow Thundarr to South Dakota for some time at... the ocean? "Attack of the Amazon Women" has undersea warriors, a warhead, and a worrisome spider. We discuss it all.

  11. 4

Interview with Thundarr writer Buzz Dixon, Part 1

In this special episode, we take a break from recapping the show to talk with very special guest, Thundarr the Barbarian writer Buzz Dixon! Dixon's a great storyteller and had lots to tell us about not just working on Thundarr and his time with Ruby-Spears, but anecdotes from all across his prolific career: from Tarzan and the Super Seven to GI Joe, Transformers, and beyond!  If you're a fan of cartoons, especially the Saturday morning variety, you don't want to miss this episode!

  12. 3

    Episode 2: Wizard Wars

David, Noel, and Michael visit Saint Louis with Thundarr and the gang. There's a head in a jar, killer elevators, and a fish-man to talk about in the second season episode, "Wizard Wars."

  13. 2

Episode 1: Secret of the Black Pearl

Thundarr's journey begins in New York City with the first episode in both production and airing order. He, Ariel, and Ookla meet Gemini, arguably the most iconic of the series' villains. Michael, Noel, and David cover the episode in detail with focus on characterization, world-building, backstory, and the rules of magic.

  14. 1

    Episode 0: History of Thundarr

Noel, David, and Michael talk about the history of Thundarr the Barbarian and their own, personal histories with the show.
