Tigers by the Fire

WWII Stories and Discussions by a WWII Class from Holy Cross School in New Orleans. Each episode will discuss a different event or topic from WWII. Topics range from various battles to programs, events, and any thing else from the Second World War. It is part of a year long WWII course. All content is created and researched by the cohosts. Tigers by the Fire is recorded out of Holy Cross School in New Orleans.

    A visit to Normandy 2026

    Interview with Holy Cross students who visited Normandy, France, over Spring Break. Hear the students' thoughts on seeing the various sites of D-Day in person.

    Killing Heydrich

    In 1942, Reinhard Heydrich was at the height of his power. In charge of the SD and Ensetgruppen, he spearheaded the planning for the final solution and held a firm grip over the SS. His life would come to a dramatic end when he was ambushed in Prague by Czech resistance fighters who were airdropped into Europe by the British in what would be the highest-level assassination of the war.

    Unit 731

    Unit 731 was an experimental unit in the Japanese occupation of China. Throughout the occupation, the group conducted human experiments on Chinese civilians and POWs. While not as widely known as events in Europe, Unit 731 is an example of the widespread atrocities committed by countries during WWII.

    Auschwitz Revisited

    In this episode, the students will discuss Auschwitz from various perspectives. One of our guests will explain the power of his visit there last November, and how it changed his views on the event. This episode presents a glimpse of a horrific topic as seen through the eyes of High School students. There are reflections on first-hand accounts, literature, and much more.

    The Ghost Army: The story of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops

    In this episode, the group will discuss the fabled "Ghost Army" of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troop. Learn how a group of artists, authors, and other non-traditional combat personnel helped win the intelligence war for the Allies.

    The Battle of Anzio

    In this episode, the students will talk about the Battle of Anzio in the Italian campaign. When most people think of invasions from the sea, they think of D-Day in Normandy, France. However, months before that, when the allies were stuck going up the "blood boot" in Italy, an operation was designed to break them free of a stalemate. Believed to be a move that would force the Germans into a quick retreat, Anzio was anything but easy. Stuck on the beach for weeks, Allied soldiers would have to fight for every foot to dislodge the German defenders.

    The Bataan Death March

    Season 6 kicks off with an episode on the Bataan Death March. In this episode, the boys will examine and discuss the struggles of soldiers captured by the Japanese in 1942 during the Philippine Islands Campaign.

    A visit to Auschwitz Birkenau

    On Saturday, November 30, 35 members of the Holy Cross family, including 20 students, and I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland after spending the past six days in Berlin, Warsaw, and Krakow. Following a large group discussion, a few of the boys wanted to stay around and make this recording. This special episode, recorded less than 12 hours after our visit in Krakow, highlights the impact this visit had on the boys.

    Pointe du Hoc

    Season 5 of Tigers by the Fire is here! In this episode, the boys will be talking about Pointe du Hoc. One of the members of the team, Josh Adams, visited Pointe du Hoc in June of 2024. He shares his thoughts on the experience.

    In this episode, the boys explore the impact of War during baseball. The students will discus both national and local stories of baseball at war.

    Second Sino-Japanese War

    In this week's episode, the guys will discuss the Japanese invasion of China. They will dive into Pan-Asaianism and the horrors of the Sino-Japanese War. Most Americans have little understanding of the Chinese part of WWII, in this podcast we hope to explore the causes and deadly consequences of the largest conflict in Asian history.

    Sabotage in Norway

    How close were the Nazis to getting an atomic bomb?  It's hard to say, but in the early 1940's the British Government, along with Norwegian resistance, wanted to stop German experiments on heavy water in Norway. This week's episode will tell the story of Norwegian commandos sabotaging a Nazi Research Facility.

    Battle of El Alamein

    In the desert of North Africa, the only thing which stands between the Axis powers and dominance over the Mediterranean is the British Army.  This week's episode focuses on the first and second battles of El Alamein. Culminating in a British victory that would eventually push the Axis armies across North Africa in 1942, the Battle of El Alamein was crucial in halting the Nazi advances and drained supplies from the Axis powers as they struggled in the desert.

    The 442nd

    This week's episode of Tigers by the Fire centers around the 442nd, a combat regiment comprised of Japanese-Americans who fought in Italy and Western Europe. From being put into incarceration camps to fighting on the front lines of Europe, the 442nd became one of the most decorated units in the entire US Army.

    Glide for Glory

    Gliders played a large role in the Normandy Invasion of 1944 and throughout the European Theater of War. In this episode, we look into a series of stories from members of the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment. After more examination, this little-discussed unit of the war was involved in most of the largest engagements in Europe, including Italy, D-Day, Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. The main source for this Episode was "Glide to Glory" by Jerry Lee Richlak

    Pegasus Bridge

    In this episode of Tigers by the Fire, the boys talk about the battle of Pegasus Bridge. Operation Dead Stick was a British Airborne glider assault in Normandy France the night before the D-Day Landings. The assault was one of two designed to capture two bridges to help prevent German Counterattacks on the morning of June 6, 1944. Pegasus Bridge is considered the first place in France to be liberated by Allied forces on D-Day.

    Matthew Gorbaty and the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute

    Matthew discusses his experiences in France through the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute. In 2023 Matthew participated in the Normandy Institute and was able to travel to Washington DC and Normandy France to learn more about the D-Day Invasions. As part of the program, Matthew researched a soldier, John C. Berlin, who he gave a eulogy for in Normandy.

    The Failure of Operation Barbarossa

    In this episode, Austin and Stephen will talk about the failures of Operation Barbarossa and how the German military grossly underestimated the Soviet Army and People. Operation Barbarossa is the 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union. It was the largest military action of the war and included soldiers from almost every country in occupied Europe and the Soviet Union.

    Operation Torch

    In this episode, the group will discuss the 1942 Invasion of North Africa and the Impact it had on later events in the war. Operation Torch was a multi-national military venture that saw the United States and Britain working together to expel the axis powers from North Africa.

    The Snipers at Stalingrad

    In this episode, the boys will be discussing the Battle of Stalingrad and the snipers that changed the tide of the war. They will be paying particular attention to Vasily Zaitsev.

    The Winter War: The Russo - Finnish Winter of or 1939 - 1940

    On this episode of Tigers by the Fire the guys will be talking about the Russo-Finnish war of 1939-1940. While the war only lasted around 100 days, the constant threat of snipers and winter conditions created havoc in the Red Army. Using the book "Frozen Hell" by William R. Trotter as a source, the boys dig into the causes and impacts of this sometimes forgotten conflict.

    Unit 731

    Christian and Tristan explore Japanese Medical Unit 731. Unit 731 was a special unit with the Japanese military that conducted experiments on Chinese citizens and POWs throughout WWII. In these experiments, they infected people with diseases and performed live dissections. Over 100,000 people were victimized by Unit 731, yet most of the people involved were not punished.

    Brody and Arya discuss the Manhattan Project and the long-term impacts of the use of Nuclear weapons at the end of WWII.

    A Summer in Normandy with Ian Doody

    Senior Ian Doody talks about his time at the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute. During the 2022 summer, Ian traveled with Mr. Arvites to Washington D.C. as part of the Albert H. Small Normandy Institute. As a part of the program, Ian researched Sgt. John Ray, a member of the 82nd Airborne from Gretna Louisiana. During the episode, Ian talks about Ray's story and his experiences in Normandy.

    In this episode, the students take a look at the treatment of African American and LBGTQ Soldiers during the war.

    Axis Propaganda

    In this episode, the group looks at Axis propaganda and its role in the racial policies of both Japan and Germany. Throughout the 20s and 30s, propaganda facilitated public sentiment and allowed for atrocities to take place during the war.

    Operation Reinhard

    In 1942 the SS began Operation Reinhard, the systematic killing of all Jews in Poland. This new phase to what would be known as the Holocaust led to the death of around two million people. Named after Reinhard Heydrich, the program saw the opening of Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka, death camps built for the purpose of mass killings. This ushered in a new age of terror and death for the people of occupied Europe.

    The Tuskegee Airmen

    This week's episode focuses on the Tuskegee Airmen. The famous 332nd escort fighter group has lived in pop culture through cinema. They were one of the highest awarded units in the entire war and had to fight through countless discriminatory practices at home in order to fight tyranny abroad.

    The Black Shirts of Italy

    This episode takes a look into the Black Shirts of Italy and their role in the rise of Benito Mussolini. This group of extremists paved the way for Mussolini's government and laid out a blueprint that would eventually be followed by the SA and SS in Germany.

    John Basilone

    This episode looks into the exploits of John Basilone, one of America's first war heroes in WWII. Basilone was made famous following his heroism on Guadalcanal where he won the Congressional Medal of Honor. The group will discuss the War in the Pacific as seen through his actions and discuss the various moments which went on to define one of America's greatest wartime figures.

    The Battle of Midway

    Tigers by the Fire Season 2 Episode 1 - "Midway"This episode takes a look at the Battle of Midway. Faught from June 4 - June 7, 1942, the Battle of Midway represents a turning point in the war in the Pacific. Leading up to Midway, the Japanese had attacked and taken most major US holdings in the Asain Pacific.     The Manhattan Project

    The Manhattan Project was the largest R&D project of WWII. It changed the world forever with the creation of Atomic Weapons. In this episode the boys discus the building of the bombs and the aftermath of dropping them.

    Battle of Leyte Gulf

    1944: The  Battle of Leyte Gulf is the largest naval battle of WWII. Off the Philippines, the Japanese go on an offensive in an attempt to break the American Fleet and it's invasion of the Philippine Islands. The Battle shapes the future of the war and turns the Japanese Navy into a purely defensive fleet.

    Nazi and Japanese Experiments on Detainees

    Throughout WWII the Axis powers committed large scale atrocities. Sometimes lost in this were the large scale medical experiments conducted on detainees. These experiments were horrific in nature and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. Even more shocking is how  many of the doctors involved in these programs were not prosecuted following the war.

    "Swedish Neutrality"

    How did Sweden maintain a neutral stance during WWII or did they? In this episode Tiger's by the Fire discusses how Sweden was able to balance trade relations with Germany during the war, and how it walked a fine line of neutrality during WWII despite its location in the world's largest conflict.

    The Battle of Kursk

    In this episode of Tigers by the Fire, we will be discussing the Battle of Kursk. The battle of Kursk took place between the Red Army and Germany from July 1943 - August 1943 and featured the largest tank battle of the war. The battle eventually led to wide spread advances across the eastern front by the Red  Army.

    The Battle of Saipan

    Nine days after D-Day in Europe, American armed forces stormed the beaches of Saipan, core Island of the Japanese Empire. And often overlooked battle, Saipan led to the bombing of mainland Japan, a gave Americans a taste of what it would be like to invade Japan. In this episodes we will discuss the battle and its importance in history.

    Executive Order 9066

    Executive Order 9066 allowed for the interment of American Citizens of Japanese heritage. Over 110,000 Americans were removed from their homes and relocated into camps spread out across the Southwest and into Arkansas. These were not enemy soldiers, but American citizens, who happened to be of Japanese descent. They lost their homes, property, businesses, and much more throughout this process.  In this episode we will discuss FDR's most controversial executive order, and why this topic is important to learn about in school.

    Guadalcanal

    The Battle of Guadalcanal  was a turning point in the ground war in the Pacific. Lasting into 1943 it proved that the United States could defeat the Japanese on the ground. Featuring a horrid jungle campaign, it was violent, brutal, but ultimately led to the allied advances across the Pacific.

    The Fire Bombing of Tokyo

    A discussion on the 1945 fire bombing of Tokyo.  In this discussion we will look at the event itself and debate the controversy associated with the bombing of Civilians in WWII.  In 1945 the allies had pushed the axis powers back on all fronts, but the war was not over. Massive bombing campaigns ensued, resulting in the destruction of cities all over Germany and Japan. Perhaps the worst of these campaigns were the fire bombing of Japanese cities. Were these attacks on civilians justified? Did it lead to a quicker end of the war?
