DJ Construct Live @ Satyricon (1999) Recorded live at SATYRICON, 10.30.1999. Whenever fully naked, gold-and-silver painted sprites & nymphs appear randomly at your event, you know that something is going right with the world…. Held at the Theatre E on East Hastings street, an old, two-level film theatre, SATYRICON signified one of the greatest collective efforts of Vancouver’s underground technoculture collectives. The HQ Communications, X-Max and B-Side soundsystems combined into a heavy-hitting quadsystem that shook the dancefloor to pieces. TeamLounge and HQ Communications provided jungle & ambience in the bunker. Visuals were projected against the massive film screen. Exquisite roman orgy decorations from Angelika & crew at B-Side created a completely immersive environment. Massive flamethrower heaters kept everyone hot — clothes were stripped. It was one of the most successful independent, bohemian, conceptual raves of the era, and it signalled, for many, something of its end. tobias.dj April 2012

Thanks to Dave of X-Max sound, we have a recording of Ill Voodoo, a classic warehouse rave. Introducing the mix is none other than Konspiracy Group’s Ill-Esha. The mix was plagued with a sticky & scratchy mixer and skipping needles… which I integrated into the aesthetic of the cement walls & towering metal roof that shook with rumbling thunder… Word was already out that the cops were on their way, and so the mix was hard & fast ——— I never knew when it was going to end. The volume is dropped a few times as rumours flew. Eventually I realised none of it mattered; so I cranked it to the final moment. Unfortunately the recording is missing the very last track —— “I Shot the Sheriff,” dropped as the RCMP walked in the door. By then I had pulled the black bandana on. tobias.dj April 2012

Recorded for // Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture // Echoes from the Dub Diaspora // Special Issue 7.2 http://dancecult.net The sonic archives of the dub diaspora are as vast and unfathomable as the depths of the black Atlantic from whence they came. Thousands upon thousands of hours of audiowaves converse with a multitude of genres. This mix traverses but two routes: Jamaica to Berlin by way of Detroit, in the ecstatic decade of the 1990s; and through London’s expatriate burroughs, in the dreadnought ‘00s. Sails are set. Depth charges at the ready. Haunted vinyl resurrected. For this DJ mix, I selected a few archival cuts of dub techno, dubstep, and dub riddims, replete with all the clicks, pops, and hisses of wax that is, in some cases, over 20 odd years old. Mixed entirely on vinyl in one take, with the crystalline sun setting behind snow capped mountains, and with the aid of a Roland RE-201 Space Echo to sound-out the seaborne soundwaves, Riddims & Routes is a two hour journey into the echoes, reverbs, and haunted spaces of dub. May this sound pull at but a few threads of the bass culture that has crossed genres and styles as well as continents and countries. // tobias.dj — November 2015 TECHNICAL NOTE ON THE MIX — Vinyl is but an echo of itself, always dissolving and degrading: and my vinyl, as well as my Technics SL1200s, RE-201 Space Echo, and dj mixer, are in some state of disrepair. One could say the analog equipment plays itself in the mix. Listen for the solos — uneven channels, strange collapses of left to right, scratches and skips, cut-outs in volume.
