    Methodologically Robust

Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Bette (she/her) w/ Special Guest Dr Stuart Aitken (he/him) This week on Tranzmission, Ez and Bette speak with specialist sexual health physician Dr Stuart Aitken, one of Queensland’s most experienced clinicians in gender‑affirming care. Stuart reflects on the origins of the Queensland Children’s Gender Service, how the first multidisciplinary gender clinic for trans youth was built, and what it took to shift a health system that had never been designed with trans young people in mind. Stuart also discusses current research connected to the establishment of the gender clinic, including work from psychologist Olivia Donaghy’s PhD — a series of four studies developed alongside the clinic’s creation GeMS: Gender Mapping Study 2017–2021. Bette & Stuart explore how this research fits into the broader evidence base and why it matters for young people and families seeking care. It’s a thoughtful, in‑depth discussion with one of the country's leading clinicians who helped shape the landscape of trans health in Queensland, and a look at what comes next for young people, families and the community. 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. Evolution of Self

Host: Ez (he/him) w/ Special Guests Dylan Holloway (he/him) and Acton Wickens (he/him) This week on a special STEREO show of Tranzmission, Ez sits down with a truly singular artist: UK‑based singer‑songwriter Dylan Holloway (he/him), known to audiences as Dylan and the Moon. Dylan’s work spans a rich catalogue of original music and reimagined covers, but what sets him apart is his ability to braid his personal journey into his sound. As a transgender musician, he’s crafted haunting duets between his pre‑transition and post‑transition vocals—melding past and present into an intimate exploration of identity, memory and transformation. Ez and Dylan dive into his creative process, the vocal techniques that supported him through medical transition, and his reflections on the current climate for trans people, especially trans youth in the UK. Joining Ez in the studio is returning special guest Acton Wickens (he/him) [See Ep: Recall Receive Releasing Friday], local singer‑songwriter, who brings his own lived experience of transition and vocal change to the conversation. Together, they chat about artistry, the mechanics and the emotion behind trans voices evolving over time including his new song Heaven Only Knows which came out on the 19th of June. Plus, we bring you the week in community news and events—everything happening across Meanjin’s queer and trans spaces. What the NDIS!?

Host: Host: Ez (he/him) Tranzmission returns this week with Ez (he/him) sitting down with Matilda Alexander, CEO of Queensland Advocacy for Inclusion, to break down the sweeping changes proposed for the NDIS. Matilda explains in clear, grounded terms who will be most affected by the shift to stricter functional‑capacity assessments, what it means for trans and gender‑diverse people with disability trying to access disability supports, and why the new legislation hands extraordinary executive powers to the Federal Health Minister to decide who can and cannot enter the Scheme. It’s a conversation about rights, transparency, and the real‑world consequences of policy decisions made far from the communities they impact. Ez also speaks with Annabelle Oxley (she/her), a trans woman, NDIS participant and long‑time advocate, who shares how these reforms land on the ground for LGBTQ+ disabled people already navigating discrimination in mainstream services. Annabelle’s lived experience cuts through the political noise, reminding listeners that behind every policy shift is someone’s daily support, safety, and autonomy. Community is The Antidote: We Have What We Need to Survive

Hosts: Ez (he/him) w/ Special Guest Fae Weichsel (she/her) This week on Tranzmission, Ez (he/him) speaks with New York City–based correspondent Fae Weichsel (she/her) for a powerful conversation on trans survival, resistance, and hope in the United States. Together, they unpack the current political climate shaped by the rise of Trumpism and the MAGA movement, and what it means for trans communities navigating a wave of restrictive legislation across multiple states. The conversation traces the long history of trans resistance from the Stonewall uprising to today with a particular focus on the vital leadership, resistance, and community care, not to forget the work of Black trans women throughout the US queer liberation movement. But this episode doesn’t stop at crisis. We Have What We Need to SURVIVE is about turning toward each other sharing tools, knowledge, and strategies for collective care, resistance, survival, and joy. Ez and Fae explore how chosen family, underground networks, resource sharing, and storytelling have long acted as forms of community defence, sustaining trans life across generations. Throughout the episode, Fae also reshares a powerful speech she delivered at a vigil several years ago, reflecting on grief, solidarity, and the ongoing fight for trans liberation. Together, they examine how mutual aid, community wisdom, and trans-led organising continue to build power and create futures beyond fear — futures still filled with joy, love, and possibility. This is an episode about truth, solidarity, and above all — hope. Breaking Tortillas Together: Race, Racism, Gender & Community

Host: Ez (he/him) w/ Special Guests Piece Kent (he/him) and Angel Ixchel Pineda (she/her) This week on Tranzmission, we’re holding space for a powerful conversation on race, racism, gender, and community — centering the lived experiences of CALD trans and gender diverse people. We’re joined by Pierce Kent founder of gender affirming underwear brand Dys4ick and Angel Ixchel Pineda, local burlesque performer and comic, who share their stories, cultural perspectives, and reflections on navigating identity at the intersection of race and gender. Ez also reads a poem and a short essay from When Language Broke Open: An Anthology of Queer and Trans Black Writers of Latin American Descent, bringing in additional voices that speak to culture, identity, and resistance. Together, we unpack how racism and transphobia show up — both in broader society and within LGBTQIA+ spaces — and explore conversations around whiteness, white fragility, and accountability in community reading from “What is white fragility and why white trans women adopt it” by Tara Knight. This episode also makes space for care, cultural connection, and what it means to build solidarity and repair. This is an honest, reflective, and necessary conversation about how we show up for each other and what it takes to create communities that are truly inclusive, supportive, and accountable. 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. THE PROBLEM WITH FINLAND

This week Bette (she/they) and Ez (he/him) tackle Finland, a country where trans healthcare seems stranded in the previous century, and whose most famous anti-trans adolescent psychiatrist, Riitterkerttu Kaltiala, has collaborated with SEGM, the Florida Board of Medicine, and the Cass Review board. As Kaltiala hosts a webinar for a small Australian trans-skeptical psychiatrists’ group and the internet debates the merits or otherwise of her latest “largely useless” study, Bette shares the testimonies of Finnish trans young people forced to endure a system that is “comparable to torture”. Meanwhile a story has surfaced in the Finnish state-run media: staff at Kaltiala’s EVA Unit have been illegally restraining young residents. Now that they’re tying down cis kids with bedsheets, will the world finally listen? 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Bette (she/her) w/ Special Guest Charlie (they/them) This week Bette (she/they) and Ez (he/him) welcome Charlie (they/them), who joins them from a Barber’s chair in Gimuy/Cairns. Together they break down the government’s review into paediatric gender care at the Cairns Sexual Health Service and discuss Charlie’s work in community with Gimuy Queer Collective. Do buckets and black mould justify the statewide ban on essential healthcare? Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Hazel (she/her) In this episode Ez (he/him) and Hazel (she/her) explore dating, romance, flirting, and intimacy in trans and gender diverse lives. From navigating dating apps and disclosure, to building confidence, setting boundaries, and sharing practical tips for cis people dating trans partners, the conversation reflects the complexity and diversity of trans experiences. Also delving into conversations about bodies, surgeries, and terminology, as well as addressing issues such as fetishisation, communication in relationships, and the longevity of intimacy — including how connection can grow and evolve over time. Throughout, the discussion Ez and Hazel challenge traditional assumptions about desire and intimacy, and highlights the importance of communication, respect, and self-determination. Additionally here are some recommended resources mentioned in this episode; Trans Sex by Kelvin Sparks, a practical guide for cis people and those new to dating trans partners; Love in a Fcked Up World: How to Build Relationships, Hook Up, and Raise Hell Together* by Dean Spade, which examines relationships through an activist and non-traditional lens; Fucking Trans Women a Zine by Mira Bellwether, a widely regarded resource on trans feminine bodies and pleasure; eff-able: a spicy anthology of queer crip poetry, which centres disabled queer voices and desire; and the “Relationship Anarchy Smörgåsbord,” a framework for designing relationships based on individual values and needs. Writing ourselves into history

Hosts: Rae (they/them) Today Rae (they/them) chats about recent trans rights issues in the news, including: Republicans in the House of Representatives introducing H.R. 7661, an anti-trans bill that would create a nationwide ban on LGBTQ+ books in public schools; the New South Wales government introducing proposed changes to the state’s Library Act aimed at protecting public libraries from book bans and censorship; and Brisbane drag performers winning an appeal, after an earlier vilification decision was overturned, finding that “drag is a vital and central aspect of queer culture.” On Tranz Verse, poet River Snowdrop reads 'One Month On T'. Rae chats with Eli Sutherland (they/them) Festival Director of Trans Book Festival (TBF) about what you can expect from the festival being held on 17-19 April in Naarm. TBF is the only writers’ festival in the southern hemisphere focused on uplifting and celebrating trans and gender diverse (TGD) literary excellence in all narrative forms. Rae also interviews Toby Fitch (he/they) about their new book Or: An Autobiography, which explores fluidities of self, body, and imagination. PATHWAYS Research in the UK

Host: Bette (she/they), and Ez (he/him) This week Bette (she/they) and Ez (he/him) pull apart the tangled mess that is the UK’s PATHWAYS (Puberty suppression And Transitional Healthcare With Adaptive Youth Services) program, a group of five studies apparently intended to help young people, parents, carers, and health professionals “make informed choices about the care and support options that are most likely to be helpful”. But could that really be the intention of an aggressive, prolonged interrogation of young people that asks them if anyone has fondled their genitals lately and equates reductions in gender dysphoria with curing transness? CW for institutionalised transphobia at its worst. Please skip this one if you struggle with stories of children suffering. For Queensland listeners, the PATHWAYS trial is the RCT that our government is waiting on before it will consider offering hormone treatments to young people through the public system again. 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. It's A Man's World: Part 3, Bodies, Belonging, and Re-Imagining Masculinity

Hosts: Ez (he/him),Elliott (he/him) Welcome back to Tranzmission’s series It’s A Man’s World. This is Part Three: Bodies, Belonging, and Re-imagining Masculinity. In our last It's A Man's World episode, Power, Safety, and Conflict, we explored what it means to navigate risk, hierarchy, and survival inside men’s spaces — the constant calculations around visibility, safety, and when to speak up or stay quiet. Today, we’re taking that conversation deeper, into the body, into belonging, and into the question of what masculinity actually becomes once you’re living inside it. Because entering men’s spaces doesn’t just change how others see you — it changes how you move, how your body is read, how you relate to yourself, and where you’re allowed to belong. From locker rooms and gyms, to workplaces, dating, and everyday public life, masculinity is experienced not just socially, but physically and emotionally. For trans men and trans-masculine people, this often means navigating new expectations around strength, size, voice, emotion, and desirability — while also carrying histories, identities, and ways of being that don’t always fit narrow ideas of the “Aussie bloke.” In this episode, we’re exploring what it feels like to inhabit masculinity in the body, how belonging is negotiated and sometimes withheld, and how trans-masculine experiences open up space to re-imagine masculinity beyond dominance, silence, and control. I’m your host Ez, he/him, joined by my best friend Elliott, he/him. As always, we’re not speaking for all trans men, trans-masculine people, or cis men. Interview w/ Professor Sandy O’Sullivan

Host: Ez (he/him) In this powerful conversation, we sit down with Professor Sandy O’Sullivan, a Wiradjuri scholar, community advocate, and transgender, non-binary academic, to explore the deep connections between gender, culture, and Indigenous ways of knowing. Together, we unpack how colonialism has shaped – and often distorted – understandings of gender and identity, and what it means to reclaim space for First Nations sovereignty and transgender histories. This episode moves beyond surface-level conversations to ask: What does community really mean? How can Indigenous thinking guide more collective, caring, and accountable futures? And how do trans and First Nations communities build solidarity while resisting systems that continue to cause harm? Grounded in lived experience, truth-telling, and cultural strength, this interview offers listeners a rare opportunity to reflect on gender, togetherness, community responsibility, and the power of Indigenous-led knowledge in shaping more just and inclusive worlds. Content Warning: This episode discusses colonial violence, systemic discrimination, and lived experiences of marginalisation. 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. It's A Man's World: Part 2, Power, Safety, and Conflict

Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Elliott (he/him) Welcome back to Tranzmission’s series It’s A Man’s World. This is Part Two: Power, Safety, and Conflict. In the first episode of this Tranzmission series we discussed; First Encounters, Learning the Rules, and Early Negotiations of Masculinity titled - Entering A Man’s World Today we’re digging into what happens after you’ve entered men’s spaces — when the unspoken rules become clearer, power dynamics start to show themselves, and questions of safety, dominance, and belonging become unavoidable. Men’s spaces — whether it’s a worksite, a footy club, a pub, a gym, or online forums — aren’t just social environments. They’re shaped by hierarchies, competition, silence, bravado, and sometimes aggression. For trans men and trans-masculine people, navigating these dynamics can mean constantly assessing risk, managing how visible or invisible you can afford to be, and deciding when to speak up, blend in, or push back. In this episode, we’re focusing on lived experiences of negotiating power, setting boundaries, responding to conflict, and staying safe — physically, emotionally, and socially — while moving through masculinity in so-called Australia. Hosted by Ez (he/him) joined Elliott (he/him). As always, we’re not speaking for all trans men, trans-masculine people, or cis men. This series is about our experiences — how we navigate, survive, challenge, and deconstruct masculinity in real time. 🔗 If you'd like to listen back to the unedited episode - with the music - head to our On Demand website. The Vine Review

Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Bette (she/they) This week Bette (she/they) earbashes Ez (he/him) about The Vine Review, also known as the Independent Review Advice Report - Advice and evidence base regarding policy options for the use of puberty suppression (Stage 1) and gender affirming (Stage 2) hormones for children and adolescents with gender dysphoria in Queensland's public hospital system (try saying that with a mouthful of pickles/feminems). Digging deep into the Review itself and responding to criticisms and interpretations from the community, Bette attempts to make sense of this conflicting mess of internal contradictions and "nuggets of nonsense". Overall, it's not all bad, and rumours of a Cass 2.0 appear to have been exaggerated, but it sure could be better. It’s A Man’s World: Part 1, Entering A Man’s World

Hosts: Ez (he/him) and Elliott (he/him) Welcome to a Tranzmission series - It’s A Man’s World. In this episode, the first part of a three part series Ez (he/him) and Elliott (he/him) talk about masculinity, men’s spaces, and what it’s like to navigate them as a transgender man or trans‑masculine person in so-called Australia, whether that’s a footy club, a worksite, a pub, a gym, or an online forum. These spaces are shaped by unspoken rules about who belongs, how you should behave, and what kind of man you’re allowed to be. For trans men and trans‑masculine people, entering these spaces can bring relief, affirmation, tension, and sometimes very real risk. This is the first episode in a series that centres on lived experiences focusing on First Encounters, Learning the Rules, and Early Negotiations of Masculinity titled - Entering A Man’s World — Ez & Elliott speak about their experiences and as a disclaimer - do NOT speak for all trans men, trans masculine people, or cis men, this series is simply about how they, personally explore, navigate, assimilate, and deconstruct masculinity. Additionally, we may use, at times language that operates within the binary, however we want to acknowledge that non-binary genders and the full breadth of gender diversity are well within this discussion. We primarily want to focus our conversation around how the "world" operates from binary perspectives, particularly in the mainstream. We want you to know what we know about how masculinity operates when you arrive at it from the outside. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of transphobia, misogyny, sexism, violence, abuse, and experiences of exclusion and discrimination in men’s spaces. We also touch on mental health, safety concerns, and emotional distress. While we avoid graphic detail, some themes may be challenging. Please take care while listening, and feel free to pause or step away if needed.
