Trey’s Table Episode 447 The Fourth Amendment and Race
Real Talk, Deep History: Race and the Fourth Amendment 📜⚖️ What does "reasonableness" look like under the law? For decades, courts applied an objective standard that completely ignored a person's identity. But this week, a groundbreaking Supreme Court decision in Dante Carter's case changed everything. Our latest episode of Trey’s Table dives deep into the powerful intersection of constitutional law, race, and the police. We break down Carter's initial arrest, the legal battle over his motion to suppress evidence, and the Trump Justice Department's attempt to overturn his victory. Most importantly, we celebrate a massive win for civil rights: the Supreme Court’s denial to review the case means the ruling stands. The law must finally recognize that a person's race profoundly shapes their interactions with law enforcement. Inside This Episode: The Myth of the "Reasonable Person": Why an objective standard fails Black men. The Power of Suppression: How defense attorneys hold law enforcement accountable. A Win Against the Odds: How Dante Carter's victory survived a Supreme Court challenge. The Dissent: Inside Justice Alito and Thomas’s pushback. 🎧 Listen now to "Trey's Table" on your favorite podcast platform! How do you feel about the court finally acknowledging that race factors into how a person experiences a police encounter? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Trey’s Table Episode 446: Black People Can Swim
Did you know that according to USA Swimming, over 64% of African American children have low to no swimming ability? Even more tragic, Black children between the ages of 5 and 19 are six times more likely to drown in a swimming pool than their white peers. These numbers aren't a coincidence, a stereotype, or a genetic trait. They are the direct result of a calculated, generational history of systemic racism, segregation, and violence. In the latest episode of Trey’s Table, we dive deep into the waters of American history to uncover how municipal pools became one of the most violent battlegrounds for civil rights—and how that legacy impacts Black communities today. #treystablepodcast

Trey’s Table Episode 421: A Choice to Change the World: The Spelman Glee Club
🎶 Before Spelman was prestigious… it was struggling to survive. After the Civil War, Black colleges faced constant financial hardship. Funding was scarce. Support was inconsistent. The hostility was real. So how did they survive? Music. The Spelman College Glee Club didn’t just sing. They toured. They raised funds. They preserved spirituals born in slavery. They represented Black excellence in a Jim Crow America that doubted their humanity. And because of that — Spelman endured. 🎙️ In this episode of Trey’s Table, we explore how music helped sustain Black education — and how Spelman became one of the most influential institutions for Black women in the world. 🎧 Listen now. Trey’s Table Episode 419: Thaddeus Stevens
What if Reconstruction had gone differently? In the latest episode of Trey’s Table, let’s take a deep dive into the life and legacy of Thaddeus Stevens — one of the most radical and fearless champions of Black freedom in American history. After the Civil War, Stevens didn’t just believe in ending slavery. He believed in economic justice. He proposed confiscating land from former Confederates — the very plantations where enslaved people had labored for generations — and redistributing that land to newly freed Black families. Not charity. Not temporary relief. Ownership. Stevens understood something many still struggle to admit: freedom without land, without capital, without economic power is incomplete. While others were satisfied with emancipation on paper, Stevens was fighting for transformation in reality. In this episode, we explore: •Why Stevens believed land redistribution was essential to true freedom •The political backlash he faced •How his proposal was defeated •And how America might look different today if his vision had been realized Reconstruction wasn’t just about rebuilding the South. It was about redefining democracy. And Stevens was willing to go further than almost anyone else. 🎙️ Listen now wherever you get your podcasts. 🔗 Link in bio. #TreysTable #BlackHistory #Reconstruction #ThaddeusStevens #40AcresAndAMule #AmericanHistory #EconomicJustice #CivilWarHistory #HiddenHistory

Trey’s Table Episode 417: Callie House: A True American Hero
Before there was a modern reparations movement… Before there were hashtags… There was Callie House. In the early 1900s, Callie House helped organize hundreds of thousands of formerly enslaved people to demand pensions from the U.S. government for the labor stolen from them. And what did the government do? They prosecuted her. They sent her to federal prison. This week on Trey’s Table, I tell the story of one of the most courageous — and overlooked — activists in American history. Her fight for reparations didn’t start in a think tank. It started in Black communities across the South. Her name was Callie House. And she refused to be silent. 🎙️ Listen now. 🔗 Link in bio. #CallieHouse #BlackHistory #Reparations #TreyTable #HiddenHistory #AfricanAmericanHistory

Trey’s Table Episode 416: CR Patterson, Son, & Company
THE HIDDEN HISTORY OF BLACK AUTOMOBILE OWNERSHIP The American automobile industry is typically taught as the story of white industrialists—Ford, Dodge, Chrysler. But in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, African Americans were deeply involved in: •Carriage manufacturing •Automotive repair •Independent design •Regional vehicle production Several Black entrepreneurs attempted to start automobile companies or related manufacturing businesses. Most failed—not because of lack of skill or vision—but because of: •Racist banking practices •Denial of business loans •Restricted access to materials •A segregated economy designed to keep Black businesses small Only one Black-owned automobile manufacturer truly broke through and produced cars at scale. That man was C.R. Patterson.

Trey’s Table Episode 403: The Destruction of the EEOC
🎙️ NEW EPISODE – TREY’S TABLE 🎙️ For decades, “disparate impact” analysis has been one of the most powerful tools in the civil rights toolbox. In this episode of Trey’s Table, we break down: ⚖️ What disparate impact really means 📜 How cases like Griggs v. Duke Power shaped civil rights law 🏛️ What the Trump administration’s changes mean for the future 🚨 Why this shift could open the door to policies that discriminate without ever saying so If intent is all that matters, what happens to communities who still feel the harm?
