    A native of Vancouver, Washington, Jack was sworn in as the 12th Sergeant Major of the Army on June 23, 2000 and served until January 15, 2004. A career soldier, he had held many leadership positions within the Department of the Army and Unified Command environments. As Sergeant Major of the Army, Tilley served as the Army Chief of Staff’s personal advisor on all enlisted-related matters, particularly in areas affecting soldier training and quality of life. He devoted the majority of his time to traveling throughout the Army observing training, and talking to soldiers and their families.He sits on a wide variety of councils and boards that make decisions affecting enlisted soldiers and their families. A Vietnam War veteran, Jack Tilley has held a variety of important leadership positions throughout his 34 year career including tank commander, section leader, drill sergeant, platoon sergeant, senior instructor, operations sergeant, first sergeant and command sergeant major. His military education includes the First Sergeants Course and the Sergeants Major Academy.Among his numerous awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Bronze Star with V Device, Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Vietnam Service and Campaign Medals.After retirement, Jack continued his advocacy for all service members. He is co-chairman of the American Freedom Foundation, a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation. The American Freedom Foundation was organized to honor veterans of America’s armed forces, to raise money and awareness for various veterans’ organizations with special emphasis directed to welfare and educational issues facing those wounded in action, and soldiers killed in action during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has worked tirelessly with the organization managing the annual fund-raising benefit concerts with top named entertainment.In addition, he is a board member of the Army Retirement Council (ARC) and special advisor for the Wounded Warriors advisory council board. His goal is to raise public awareness and support for military service members and veterans.Jack has also become a successful management consultant, working with top Fortune 500 companies on a variety of projects and programs that are unique to the military community. She graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2009 and commissioned as an Engineer Officer in the United States Army. After nearly six years on Active Duty, Jackie transferred to the United States Army Reserve, so she could achieve her dream of going to law school. She graduated from the Cumberland School of Law in 2021, and she is licensed to practice law in Alabama. Jackie uses her extensive military experience to her advantage when representing service members and their family members through divorce and custody cases. Jackie is currently a Major in the United States Army Reserve, and she still loves being an Army Engineer.In addition to her law practice and military duties, Jackie uses her free time to coach her daughter's softball team, volunteer at her daughter's school, and help make her community better however she can. She was recently appointed to the be the Birmingham Chapter President of the VMI Alumni Association, and she is committed to uniting and serving her fellow Keydets and Veterans in North Alabama.

    Episode 125: Dr. Alina Fong

    o honor her father, who was a Vietnam War veteran, Dr. Alina K. Fong chose to work at the Veteran’s Affairs Salt Lake City Healthcare System for her Ph.D. internship. At Veteran’s Affairs, Dr. Fong worked extensively with Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom veterans. It was during this time that concussion was identified as the signature injury of war. From 2007 to 2008, Dr. Fong was able to hone her knowledge and skills working with TBI and PTSD patients as she helped veterans fresh off the battlefield. It was this internship that shaped her future as it ignited her passion for helping TBI survivors find relief from their symptoms and suffering.Dr. Fong earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Neuropsychology with an emphasis in Neuroimaging from Brigham Young University in April of 2008. During her academic career under the mentorship of Dr. Erin Bigler and Dr. Mark Allen, she received the national American Psychological Association Clinical Neuropsychology Division 40 Graduate Student Research Award in 2004 for her research on “Cortical Sources of the N400 and ‘The N400 Effect.’”In tandem with Dr. Allen, she has published numerous articles that detail their discoveries and successes in combing neuropsychology and neuroimaging to improve the diagnosis and treatment of brain injuries (as well as various mental and emotional disorders). Through their research, Dr. Fong and Dr. Allen have derived normative data for various populations, including concussion and TBI populations. These research projects and publications have been used to improve the lives of concussion and TBI survivors.In 2005, Dr. Fong joined Utah Valley Regional Medical Center (UVRMC) where she began treating patients with severe traumatic brain injuries. After her graduation in 2008, Dr. Fong continued her career with UVRMC, later becoming the director of clinical training for the neurotrauma rehabilitation clinic and sports medicine/concussion clinic. Dr. Fong still holds this position today. This year, 2020, will mark 15 years of service with UVRMC.In 2012, Dr. Fong was contacted by NFL quarterback Tom Brady. He was impressed by Dr. Fong and asked for her help creating a concussion clinic. In 2013, they opened TB12 Sports Therapy and Concussion Center in Boston, Massachusetts. She continued working with Mr. Brady while she built up her own clinic, Cognitive FX (CFX), with Dr. Allen in Utah.Cognitive FX opened in August 2014 with Dr. Fong as its clinical director and co-owner. Her expertise in the area of concussion care has led to the creation of Enhanced Performance In Cognition (EPIC) Treatment, which integrates fMRI into the latest mTBI treatment. EPIC Treatment represents the most comprehensive concussion care and brain rehabilitation available and vastly improves the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term planning of mTBI. Under Dr. Fong’s direction, CFX has treated almost 2,000 concussion and other brain injury patients, including professional athletes from the NFL, NHL, and the Olympics.Her most recent achievement is the creation of Neural Effects, the premier acute concussion treatment center in Utah Valley, which includes pediatric concussion treatment.Additionally, Dr. Fong is the vice president and president-elect for the Brain Injury Alliance of Utah, a board member of the United States Brain Injury Alliance, an advisory board member for PINK Concussions, and the director of concussion services at TB12 Sports Therapy Center.

    Major Teddy Colgate is a decorated Marine Corps veteran, nonprofit founder, and mental health advocate whose life story is one of service, survival, and transformation.With 22 years of active duty and seven overseas deployments, Teddy’s military career took him from the deserts of the Middle East to the skies above Washington as part of the elite Marine One presidential helicopter unit. Rising from enlisted ranks to officer status, he embodied leadership under pressure. But after retiring in 2012, he faced a battle he never expected—the invisible wounds of war.In 2016, Teddy reached his lowest point. Struggling with PTSD, moral injury, and a profound sense of disconnection, he almost took his own life until his son came around the corner and asked for juice. That moment became a turning point. Through faith, therapy, and a renewed sense of purpose, he began the difficult work of healing.Determined to help others find their way back from the brink, Teddy co-founded First Coast Heroes Outreach in 2013. Initially serving veterans, the nonprofit expanded its mission in 2021 to include first responders and active-duty personnel.     When Chris Luna decided to join the Navy, he was following in his father's footsteps. His grandfather had served in the Army; his brother, the Marines. Enlisting was in his DNA, he said.⁠⁠Raised in a small town in Oklahoma, Luna, 47, would end up traveling the world during his time of service, from 1996 to 2018.⁠⁠After retiring from the Armed Forces, Luna eventually made his way to Houston after a friend bought a home in the Champions Forest area.⁠⁠Before he moved, Luna had been in therapy, while living in Washington, D.C. I also served as a Battalion S1 for the 21st Combat Support Hospital in the 1st Medical Brigade, with deployments to Iraq and Texas.I have been an Officer Basic Course Instructor and Class Advisor for the Army Medical Department at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. I commanded Charlie Company, 121st (P) 123rd Cavalry Battalion in Iraq and Texas, and served as an Observer/Coach and Trainer at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana. I was Battalion S3 for the 115th Combat Support Hospital in Louisiana and later served as Chief of Operations for the Department of the Army's Training and Doctrine Agency at Fort Sam Houston.I also held positions as Battalion Executive Officer for the 232nd Medical Battalion, Course Director for Leadership Development, and Chief of Operations in the III Corps Surgeon Cell. Most recently, I served as the Commander of the 61st Multi-functional Medical Battalion and currently am the Director of GFM, G33, MEDCOM.My military education includes the Army Medical Department’s Basic and Advanced Courses, the Army’s Command and General Staff College, and the Joint Medical Planners Course. I am currently enrolled in Senior Service College. My awards include the Bronze Star Medal (twice), Meritorious Service Medal (four times), Army Commendation Medal (twice), among others. Every song is a hit and major producers say some of Mike's songs have Billboard written all over them.Mike has been around music his entire life. His much older brother was in a band when Mike was born. Mike started playing guitar at age seven, and by age nine, he started his own band with Kenny Chesney's drummer when Kenny's drummer was just five years old.Mike grew up loving classic rock, then got into 80s music and eventually rock music/heavy metal.     Episode 104: Master Chief James Sandlin

    Today, we're honored to share the remarkable military career of Master Chief Petty Officer James Sandlin. His journey began in October 1972, leading him to serve on the Aircraft Carrier USS Forrestal (CVA-59), participating in three significant Mediterranean Sea cruises during a period of heightened conflict. After an initial active-duty period, James also dedicated three years to the U.S. Army Ohio National Guard before rejoining the Navy in 1980.Upon his return to the Navy, Master Chief Sandlin embarked on a distinguished path in Cryptologic assignments. His service took him across the globe, from Alaska to Diego Garcia, and Scotland, including a notable period as an instructor in Maine. He played a crucial role on the USS Spruance (DD-963), involved in Caribbean Sea Operations and the Southwest Asia Cease Fire Campaign. His exemplary service included being personally commended by Commander US SIXTH Fleet for his support to combat operations near Libya. Master Chief Sandlin concluded his active duty in 1999 as the Senior Enlisted Advisor and Operations Superintendent at a Department of Defense Joint Operating Facility in Colorado, marking a truly impactful career.

    General David H. Petraeus (US Army, Ret.) (New York) joined KKR in 2013. He is a Partner at KKR, Chairman of the KKR Global Institute, and Chairman of KKR Middle East. He is also a member of the boards of directors of Optiv and OneStream, a Strategic Advisor for Sempra and Advanced Navigation, a personal venture investor, an academic, and the co-author (with British historian Andrew Roberts) of the New York Times best selling book “Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Gaza”. Prior to joining KKR, General Petraeus served over 37 years in the U.S. military, culminating his career with six consecutive commands as a general officer, five of which were in combat, including command of the Surge in Iraq, command of U.S. Central Command, and command of coalition forces in Afghanistan. Following retirement from the military and after Senate confirmation by a vote of 94-0, he served as Director of the CIA during a period of significant achievements in the global war on terror. General Petraeus graduated with distinction from the U.S. Military Academy and is the only person in Army history to be the top graduate of both the demanding U.S. Army Ranger School and the U.S. Army’s year-long Command and General Staff College. He also earned a Ph.D. in international relations and economics from Princeton University. General Petraeus taught both subjects at the U.S. Military Academy in the mid-1980s, he was a Visiting Professor of Public Policy at the Honors College of the City University of New York from 2013 through 2016, he was for 6 years a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California and a Senior Fellow at Harvard University’s Belfer Center, and he was the Co-Chairman of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Global Advisory Council for over 9 years. He is also a LinkedIn Top Voice. Over the past 20 years, General Petraeus was named one of America’s 25 Best Leaders by U.S. News and World Report, a runner-up for Time magazine’s Person of the Year, the Daily Telegraph Man of the Year, twice a Time 100 selectee, Princeton University’s Madison Medalist, and one of Foreign Policy magazine’s top 100 public intellectuals in three different years. General Petraeus has earned numerous awards and decorations, including four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, two NATO Meritorious Service Medals, the Master Combat Action Badge, the Ranger Tab, and Master Parachutist and Air Assault Badges. He has also been decorated by 14 foreign countries and he is believed to be the only person who, while in uniform, threw out the first pitch of a World Series game and did the coin toss for a Super Bowl.
