This episode, we are going back in time a bit more than usual, all the way back to the 1920's, to a case that was such an important part of history, yet is so easily forgotten (possibly on purpose) that we had to bring it back to the forefront of all true crime listener's minds: The Greystone Mansion Murders! The Greyston Mansion was built in the 1920's by a family so rich and powerful, many streets, buildings, and even a beach are still named after them to this day. As with most uber rich families, the Doheny's had their fair share of secrets, and unfortunately for them, some of those secrets came to light while this mansion was being built. Mary was only 15 when she ran away from her Nevada home in hopes of finding her grandfather. This week we're looking at a story of survival, which can be a great thing, but also has a lot of trauma related repercussions for the survivor, or in this case survivors - all 27 of them! This story, the Chowchilla Bus Kidnapping, was the biggest story - and largest mass kidnapping - California had ever seen, and to this day, there hasn't been a larger group of people kidnapped since. The worst part - 26 of the 27 captives were children, many as young and 5 or 6 years old. This tale is harrowing, terrifying, evil, and also, just plain stupid, as you'll see how unprepared, half assed, and dumb the kidnappers were (yes, they were absolutely caught). This week, we're going back in time to a horrific and little covered case: The Wineville Chicken Coop Murders. This week, we are diving in on one of the most horrific tales we've ever heard or spoke of: The worst mother in the world, Theresa Knorr. This week, we're diving into a serial killer duo who were rightfully dubbed The Speed Freak Killers. These to drugged out losers assaulted and killed as many as 70 men and women in California's Central Valley betwen the years of 1984 and 1998, before the Sheriff in the area finally decided to put a stop to their reign of terror. These two men, Loren Herzog and Wesley Shermantine, were both from upper middle class families, and seemed to have it all. Behind closed doors, though, things were very different, and the traumas suffered by children can often manifest in very bad ways as they grow up. We are BACK, finally! After a nearly five month hiatus, Cindy is back with a doozy of a case! The murder of Kristin Smart is something most Californians of a certain age at least know about, remember, and often mourn, as it was huge news in many communities, especially as it took over 20 years to solve. Cindy dives into this horrific case of a wonderful young woman murdered by a classmate and all but forgotten by negligent police, who bungled the case for over 20 years while her family waited for closure. This week, we take a look at a slightly lesser known but still very scary serial killer, Roger Kibbe, the I-5 Strangler. This week, we look at what can only be described as a devastating case, truly one of the worst out there - The Toolbox Killer. This case again takes place in the 1970's, when multiple young girls were abducted, tortured, sexually assaulted, and killed by two trash bag humans named Larry Bittaker and Roy Norris. These two dirt bags met in prison in a jewerly making class and became fast friends while plotting to terrorize young women and girls when they were released, which happened way too quickly considering their laundry list of past crimes. Debbie Dorian was a smart, driven 22 year old college student at Fresno State when her life was cut short by an unidentified attacker. This week we take a look at one of the most infamous, horrifying cases in California history: the abduction and murder of Polly Klaas. This story takes place in 1993, when 12 year old Polly is stolen out of her own bedroom during a sleep over with two friends, while her mother and sister slept in the other room. The boldness of the abduction, along with the inability to find a single suspect for more than two months, made this case one of the most terrifying and captivating of its time. The entire nation stood by, waiting for answers, and finally, just before the new year, they got what they were waiting for when a man was finally tied to her disappearance. Once Polly's killer was caught, her story was used to pass multiple new laws, including California's highly debated Three Strikes and You're Out law, which was sold to frightened voters as a way to protect our children, but ended up imprisoning thousands of non violent criminals, while others continued to walk free. This week, Cindy is doing a deep dive on the absolutely horrible, despicable serial killer, William "Bill" Bonin. This trash bag human assaulted or murdered upwards of 50 boys and young men, and had no signs of stopping when he was finally caught in the summer of 1981. Beyond the horrificness of his murders, this case really highlights the problems within the justice system, especially in the 1970's and 80's. Between paperwork issues, negligent doctors, and a wide hunting ground, Bill Bonin was able to prey on his victims for years. This week, Cindy is looking at a previously cold case that was finally solved over 30 years after a young couple was abducted from Davis, CA, while on their way to a surprise party. As some of you may know, Davis is Cindy's home town, so this case is very near and dear to her, as it was to many people who grew up there, including a journalist named Joel Davis, who became so interested in the case he actually helped get it reopened, and finally solved.
