In one, Questlove tells the story of the band Earth Wind and Fire, in another The French tell the story of one of the greatest military fighters in French history started out by playing instruments, the Harlem Hellfighters

Welcome to Season Nine of TV Talk with the Sistas. We won Best Audio Programming for the ACM Hometown Media Awards this year making us an award-winning podcast. We thought it was only fair that we up our game. In Season Nine, we are going to talk about stories that shed new light on our stories. Our stories being those of African Americans, women and our own personal stories.

The Sistas give you their hot picks on ten shows or movies they think everyone should watch. These are just some quick takes on shows they like, but haven’t done an episode on it. Many of these shows came out in 2025.

This movie has the combination of great acting, directing and being about a character who already had a storied life. Devil in the Blue Dress

It took fifty years before this person got their roses but this story adds new layers to African American history. Not only is this a great story, but the storytellers stand out. Listen as the sisters tell you what they think.

This is a movie that started a movement. This movie that had African American women as the headliners, inspired generations. Listen to why the Sistas feel this way.

For decades we have heard stories about the Woodstock festival in 1969 and how monumental it is in music history. But there was a festival in Harlem in 1969 that was just as colossal, but like much of African American history has been hidden. Listen as the Sistas talk about this documentary about the festival.

It was at the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.This movie opens with Ray Charles singing and lets the viewers know there is gonna be some trouble. Listen as the Sistas take you back in time.

This classic movie has a very loose storyline that they managed to weave some African American history into. It plays to many stereotypes but has some of the best talent that every came from the African American community. Listen to the Sistas take on this gem.

In Season Seven we talked about some of the best African American movies ever. The list was so long we decided to finish it in Season Eight. In Episode 1, he didn’t fly through the air or wasn’t faster than a speeding train, but this man was the black super hero of the 1970s. Everyone knows that Issac Hayes theme and when it comes on, people who know think about one thing, our black superhero.

There are some movies the Sistas thought were good, but not quite. Today the Sistas are talking about the movies they thought needed to be brought up, but not as a whole episode. They call those the honorable mentions.

Gina and I didn’t see this one coming. But we got some help to talk about this one by inviting Imani Payne to chat with us about this movie that could be considered one of the best. Listen as we talk about White Chicks.

We first saw this story on Broadway in the early1990s. It tells the story of how thousands of children were beaten and tortured. 8,000 children were in prison. This story is about South African teenagers fought against apartheid in the Soweto Uprising. Listen to the Sistas talk about this story.

In this episode we will talk about the movie Black Panther. It is one of the Marvel family of films, distributed by Disney. It made 1.3 billion dollars in box office. Black movies do sell. It was nice to have a brown super hero and for him to have his own movie. It was nice to have brown people saving other brown people Wakanda created an amazing space for brown people

Today we are talking about a picture made during the Code Area. That was when there was an organization that strictly monitored the content of movies. Made in 1934 and given the certificate number of 412. Imitation of Life was a Universal Picture. It is remarkable this one was ever made. It was the story of a white woman taking in a black woman and them raising their daughters together facing identity and racial issues.

This movie is described as “A police detective, a bank robber and a high-power broker enter high stakes negotiations after a criminal’s brilliant heist spirals into a hostage situation.” Listen to see how the Sistas feel about this and if it is a great movie.

In Season Seven of TV Talk we are going to tell you about the best African American movies ever. Some of them were made by AA, while others were only stories that included AA. All of these movies were life changing. Today we are talking about a movie we saw on television when we were little kids. Back when we were kids there were very few African Americans on television. So if it had African Americans in it, you watched it. It didn’t matter what the story was about, it was just an experience to see someone who looked like us on Television or in the movies. It was the Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.

Many actors have played this character in movies and limited run series. In this season finale the Sistas talk about if the current actor hit the mark or was he tacking. Listen as they enlighten.

After ten seasons this criminal is hanging up his hat. This has been one of the Sistas favorite shows. Are they sad to see it go? Check out this episode.

They share some of their favorite roles and remind you “Don’t sleep on this actor” because you will miss something very special.

This actor has starred in some unforgettable movies. She has made us laugh, cry and question why we do what we do. She did things before they became a trend. She has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony and still surprises us with what she can accomplish. Listen

During a time of segregation there were some of us fighting it out in Hollywood. This actor starred in roles that showed that struggle. Some of the moments happened on screen and gave people of color a reason to cheer. Listen as they talk about him.

This actress is the queen of Wakanda but had many memorable roles before then. She taught us what love had to do with it. Showed us how to get our groove back. She has also represented the kind of women we want to be. Hint. Listen Now.

There have been good movies that changed your life. Television series that spoke to your soul. One of the elements that make this so powerful is the actor. This season we spotlight some of our favorite actors. These are people who we would go see the movie just because they are in it. This actor has played good guys and bad guys. Historical and Fictional figures. “We didn’t land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us!” These words came from one of the landmark roles this actor has portrayed. This actor has played a wide range of roles all of which have given us more reasons to love him.

By the late 1980s there was a powerful message that was ringing true on television and in other mediums. A new filmmaker captured the attention of the Sistas while a documentary series taught the lessons about fighting for voting rights.

Were the mid 1980s really in control and tricky? This 1980s decade brought some welcomed changes to television and in the movies. The White savior seemed to be dying, or was he? Listen as the Sistas talk about some of the changes.

Music dominated the scene and more and more black faces were dominating the small screen. The economy was sluggish but Hollywood introduced adventure, action and the trilogy. And life for the Sistas would never be the same because PAC-MAN came to town during this time period.

As the country was coming to the end of the decade, it experienced an unexpected death but found some new music that had everyone dancing. Listen as the Sistas reflect on some of the best shows ever to come across the TV screen.

The mid 70s showcased the police drama on TV, the Jackson’s on the radio and TV and a new focus on black pride. The world was embracing the funky music but the resignation of President Nixon cast a shadow on the nation. Or did it? See what the Sistas remember from their early days.

The 70s ushered in funky fashion. Cool music. And a new definition of beauty. The black community was making its presence known all over the US after years of fighting for civil rights. The Sistas share their first memories of the 70s and a show that changed everything about entertainment.

The 1960s was a world turned upside down. From 1967 to 1969 the chaos of politics and war left people finding solace in television and music. The Sistas talk about the shows and the music that were part of the revolution. Their special guest, Brenda Derrick gives them insight into what the time was really like.
