Twin Picks

THREE film-loving siblings watch TWO movies and pick which ONE better achieves what it sets out to do!Together, Meg, Noah, and Eliza will watch two films that share some kind of similarity; it might be an obscure connection (did you know 'A Bug's Life' and 'Seven Samurai' have the exact same plot?) or a dumb and obvious one ('Billy Madison' vs. 'Billy Elliot'). Then, they pick apart both films in the kind of funny, faceted discussion that could only occur between twins (and also their other sister ugh).New episodes released every Sunday! The Greatest Horror Movie Performances

acting so good, it's almost scary...Noah, Eliza, and Anthony create the ultimate dream-team of towering performances from within the horror genre, from the most loveable and awesome final girls, to hauntingly believable possessions, to transformative villain roles. The gang takes some time to shiver in admiration - and fear!! eeeeeee - at the double header of Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, Bruce Campbell's terrific clowning, and Barbara Hershey's harrowing work in 'The Entity'.we got some strong opinions about what makes a horror movie performance GREAT, and we'd love to hear your favourite roles too: get in touch via our social media below or email us! 55. Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert + To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar (feat. Molly Ward)

finally it's happened to me (getting Molly on the podcast)Life was a drag until we got Molly Ward in the studio, to talk about a pair of twin films that see straight actors dragging it up in mirroring road-trip comedies. A longtime listener with a deep love of all things drag, Molly is here to help Noah and Eliza enthuse over the still-legendary and empathetic Aussie classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Then the gang discusses their first time watching To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar, an Americanised take on a very similar story of queer city-slicker fabulosity stuck in a remote backwater town. Why is one film so beloved, 'daggily Australian', and perhaps before its time (with a few notable scenes as exceptions), and the other feels somewhat static, with Swayze, Snipes and Leguizamo just as stranded as their admittedly very entertained viewers? it's time to make your choice, and DO fuck it upTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKSNoah's close friend and Melbourne drag queen Iva Rosebud (https://www.instagram.com/ivarosebud/)Eliza's drag pageant behind-the-scenes doco The Queen (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063477/)Molly's inclusive alternative to Drag Race, The Boulet Brothers' Dragula (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6289132/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0) + The SImpsons foray into drag 'Werking Mom' (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7702262/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_7)Anthony's work with The Push, with new singles out now = https://instagram.com/thepushinc?utm_medium=copy_link / https://linktr.ee/thepushincSend a lil thanks to the gang via https://www.buymeacoffee.com/twinpicksEMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: The greatest HORROR acting performances Hosted on Acast. 54. Frozen + Frozen

make sure u don't accidentally watch Frozen (2010) with ur Disney-loving children...it's our first time tackling films with exactly the same title: Disney's world-conquering, kids'-party-inspiring, show-tune-infested Frozen, and an earlier horror film Frozen, about a trio of skiers stranded on a chair lift. In tone and subject matter, these movies couldn't be more different, catering to totally separate audiences but somehow both involving some silly wolf chase-scenes.Noah and Eliza start discussing their movie opinions in order to keep body temps up n stay alive, branching out into arguments about survival cinema in general and the state of post-Pixar, post-Lego-Movie animated film. Listen through to our cold-hearted ultimate conclusion and vote on Insta, if the winning film sends a shiver down ya spineTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKSNoah's favourite simple pumpkin soup recipe for cold Melbourne winters: Put 1 chopped onion + 2 dollops of butter into a microwaveable bowl n heat for 3 minutes. 53. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen + Confessions of a Shopaholic (feat. Ivana Brehas)

you've just gotta have no doubt/just believe in your...self ..Less is NOT more in this chick-lit showdown, where one of our favourite recurring guests Ivana Brehas (https://ivanabrehas.com/) makes the discussion bigger, better, and more dramatique. We watched two confessional tales of aspirational femininity, in which two redheaded pathological liars strive towards the glam jobs/high school musical roles of their dreams whilst casually stringing a fantasy brunette along. So who has the better confession, our queen Lindsay Lohan in the Disney tween flick 'Confessions Of A Teenage Drama Queen'? 52. Dante's Peak + Volcano

i just want to touch/eat lava okay. tastes like burning :)The studio is HEATING up this week in more ways than one - Noah and Eliza genuinely get quite fiery at each other over their differing takes on two 1997 cinematic eruptions. 'Dante's Peak' and 'Volcano' came out only months apart in the same year, with plenty of the same lava-and-ash-filled setpieces, and dashing scientists trying not to get sizzled like a sausage in the Bunnings car park. But the siblings cannot agree on whether Tommy Lee Jones' asshole emergency strategist is enough of a winner!! And we have to hear Noah's 'grandma dying in acid' impression yet AGAIN!! 51. Monkey Shines + Link

'i hate every monkey movie i see/from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z'They're our closest genetic relatives but YIKES are they creepy: this week we checked out two films about evil murderous primate, both awesome 80's horror flicks that reckon with the not-so-slight difference between man and MONQUE. George Romero's "Monkey Shines" focuses on a protective capuchin helper monkey, whose quadriplegic owner finds himself living out the creature's animalistic rage. And "Link" traps Elisabeth Shue in an olde English manor with some nice monkeys and one very naughty, cigar-smoking, INCREDIBLY talented orangutan.Quit monkeying around and hit PLAY already, to hear some incredible tales of in-cinema projection shenanigans and the gang enthusing over Anthony's shiny new studio :oTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKSNoah's dreamy Argento horror with a monke twist, Phenomena (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenomena_(film)Eliza's disturbing chimp attack article "The Worst Story I Ever Heard": (https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a5609/chimpanzee-attack-0409/)EMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: Dante's Peak + Volcano Hosted on Acast. 50. The Big Chill + Forrest Gump (feat. Leanne Bartram)

with a half-century worth of episodes we r officially going through a MID-LIFE CRISISOn this celebratory 50th Golden Episode, Noah and Eliza show what their mama gave em - some strongly held OPINIONS on boomer cinema!! Joined by legal legend and Janssen family matriarch Leanne Bartram, it's a battle of the generations, centred around two movies that depict and challenge the lofty values and culture of the 1960s, especially when compared to the excess and ruin of the 1980s.Leanne still loves Forrest Gump, Robert Zemeckis' Oscar-sweeping tear-jerking story of a simple man happening upon American history. Ensemble comedy The Big Chill is a bit more specific, following a weekend of reunion between some hippies-turned-yuppies after a close friend's death. But both have soundtracks that put the BOOM in baby boom, and the discussion may just see a small family get torn apart :OTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKSLeanne's own 70s soundtrack Tapestry by Carole King (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWbHG5iGZEA) and the shrimp-centric movie Lazy River (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025375/)Eliza's supporting character from previous Pick Sky High, Coach Boomer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEVffls50hs)Noah's skit about cynical Hollywoodism vs. Robert Zemeckis, Rejected Pitches: Forrest Gump (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x15nvmz)EMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: Link + Monkey Shines Hosted on Acast. hoNEY...WHERE's my podcasting SUIT....We're fangirling over the guest appearance of musical star Karis Oka (@karisoka), who brings us two movies about animated dads trying to relive their glory days. Pixar's The Incredibles definitely comes in hot with Noah, Anthony, and Eliza all scrambling to quote their favourite iconic bits, but don't discount the pure whimsy and surprisingly emotional character storytelling of stop-motion sensation Fantastic Mr Fox.Which film has the more spectacular animated MILF? 48. The Towering Inferno + The Poseidon Adventure

you either BURN baby BURN, or you DROWN baby DROWN : (Eliza, Noah, and Anthony return to the 1970s glory days of the disaster genre, big destructive movies in which an ensemble cast of the era's stars dodge debris, rising waters, and some matching schlocky theme songs by Maureen McGovern. The real life-threatening dilemma is this: which movie actually wins?? We've got a tie for the ages, with the team having mixed feelings on both the sizzling, broader-in-scope star vehicle The Towering Inferno and the splashy religious epic of an upturned boat The Poseidon Adventure. The former has a nice big spread of characters facing a multitude of mini-disasters, plus it's a rare example of a pair of twin films being knitted together. But the latter has Gene Hackman as an angry new age priest in a skivvy, so audience; you gotta help us out!! Oscars Schmoscars: our thoughts on the 93rd Academy Awards

id like to thank the podcasting academy and my agent and my manager and Satan and my momEach year the same showbiz debate rears its ugly head: do we really NEEd the Oscars, to arbitrarily rank hollywood film based on what an academy of ol crusty dusties have to say??? and the answer is YES, purely because Noah, Eliza, and Anthony have some Big Opinions on what movies won and what movies should've won at this year's somewhat stilted ceremony.Going from category to category, the gang analyses the meaning of Nomadland's win, the completely awkward Best Actor presentation, and whether Promising Young Woman is feminist film gold or a piece o shit. And this time, NOBODY's thoughts get passive-aggressively played offstage by some polite orchestral version of 'moon river' or somethinTansy Gardam's essay 'Making Bigotry A Thing Of The Past'EMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/Next time: 'The Towering Inferno' + 'The Poseidon Adventure' (i know i know) Hosted on Acast. Kramer' and then 'Freddy Vs. Jason'. Here's The original bracket, where we'll use nothing but our own smooth brain logic to find an ultimate champion from all these cinematic showdowns. It doesn't matter if its a nasty divorce settlement, a whimsical journey of self-realisation, or fascist superheroes who don't yet understand that their mums have the same name: one must fall, and one will prosper to beat em all. 47. Drop Dead Gorgeous + Razzle Dazzle

i can hear the far-off sound of helicopter parenting on the horizon’Razzle Dazzle’ is a true underdog story, being about an unconventional children’s dance troupe AND being a little-seen Australian mockumentary that Eliza, Noah, and Meg have randomly championed since age 8. ‘Drop Dead Gorgeous’, on the other hand, stars Hollywood comedic talent like Kirsten Dunst, Kirstie Alley, Allison Janney, and even Brittany Murphy and Amy Adams in supporting roles!! But it may be held back by its dark n nasty comedy stylings...Delving deep into the trauma of their own childhood stage experiences, the gang will settle this double feature like true dance floor professionals: no beauty pageant sabotage or childnapping required.TRIPLETP IN THE ATTIC LINKSMeg’s canine classic from Christopher Guest, Best In Show (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Best_in_Show_(film))Eliza’s horrifying Simpsons-themed rock eistedfodd performance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK3tZ60Fn8U)Noah’s tasteless Dance Moms performance Where Have All The Children Gone (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=hKtgNPijYzwMiss Teen South Carolina Answers A Question (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lj3iNxZ8Dww)EMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: The Ultimate ‘Versus’ Movie Tournament Hosted on Acast. these movies will make you long for the golden days of lockdownIn commiseration with Eliza, who is TRAPPED in a CRUEL government's nationally mandated quarantine system (actually an extremely comfy and manageable hotel stay), the gang locks the doors and settles in for a claustrophobic double feature. Or is that 'caustrophobic'?? whateverDavid Fincher's potboiler 'Panic Room' and Lenny Abrahamson's novel adaptation 'Room' are both stories of motherhood in captivity, taking place over one tense night for the former and the entire process of imprisonment and escape for the latter. But like, did Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart even need to go in that room? And does Brie Larson's Best Actress-winning performance as a kidnapped teen-turned-bitter-single-mom stand above the original novel's gimmick of seeing it all through a child's eyes? One thing is certain - the whole team needs to be spending more time outdoors. maybe listen to this episode while out on a walk or something...don't let the walls close in ... :0TRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKSEliza’s fun/mandated quarantine in Sydney’s Radisson Blu Hotel (https://www.radissonhotels.com/en-us/hotels/radisson-blu-sydney)Meg’s conditional recommendation of chamber drama Carnage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnage_(2011_film))Noah’s disturbing tale of a man imprisoned Oldboy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldboy_(2003_film))Trapped! 'age ain't nothin but a number' - R. Both films take a darkly comedic look at romance, you see, focusing on a lost young guy and his more senior love interest, all soundtracked to the music of a folk-pop troubadour (Simon & Garfunkel in the former, Cat Stevens in the latter). Can we really go past the tremendous final shot of 'The Graduate', which has been Meg's desktop background since she was way too young to have watched 'The Graduate'? witness the Lee family legacy ...and TRAGEDY *sadly kicks a bad guy's head off*for eons now, Noah has been obsesst with Bruce Lee and his distinct brand of badass. not just his movies, like 1973's 'Enter The Dragon', but also his tragic early demise, and the eerie on-set death of his son Brandon Lee while filming his breakout 'The Crow'.LISTEN to the stunningly sad true story behind the deaths of both Lee family action stars!!!!! PONDER whether the movies are important and funky in their own right beyond the hypnotic celebrity deaths they're probably best known for!!! dam i wish i lived back in the olden times!! back when ppl could have super sexy and easy queer lives!!!! holidaying and havin sex in europe!!This romantic, heartbreaking pair of recent queer romances came from the twisted musical mind of Anthony Carr, our podcast's own troubadour. And the gang has plenty of tears to shed over both movies, Luca Guadagnino's portrait of a sexy summer on fire 'Call Me By Your Name' and Celine Sciamma's 'Portrait Of A Lady On Fire', a tale of womens art and work and loss omg. Both movies are basically unimPEACHable (hehe sorry) stories of finding oneself in a life-changing same-sex relationship, but only one can triumph!!! the other one will b thrown into a chemical fire! no it won't hehe dw friendsTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKS:Meg's memoir about queer romance and abuse 'In The Dream House' by Carmen Maria MachadoNoah’s Danny Boyle art romance flick TranceAnthony’s dual music recommendations for queer love stories, Forrest Gump by Frank Ocean and Levitation by Beach HouseEliza's Orpheus and Eurydice-themed flash game Don't Look BackEMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: 'Enter The Dragon' + 'The Crow' Hosted on Acast. the two GREATEST and BLUEST romantic films of all time! and by bluest, i don't mean like 'erotic', they just literally look extremely blueMeg, Noah, and Eliza compare Barry Jenkins' Best Picture-winning, revelatory and intimate portrait of black queer masculinity to uhhhhhh the YA vampire vs. werewolf franchise that is frequently derided as one of the worst love stories of all time. Does Catherine Hardwicke's 'Twilight' stand a chance against 'Moonlight'? Would 'Moonlight' be better if Chiron was a vampire??? so so many questions and very few answers. but lots of fun to make up for it.TRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKS:Meg's friend Ewan....and also the Andy Kaufman/Jim Carrey doco Jim & Andy: The Great BeyondEliza's Dolly Parton 'light'-themed bop that will take you to church: Light of a Clear Blue MorningNoah's superior Tony Scott tale of vampiric love The HungerEMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: 'Portrait of a Lady on Fire' + 'Call Me By Your Name' Hosted on Acast. The gang is BACK with the love and support of That's Not Canon Productions, making this podcast a truly sexy til-death-do-us-part romantic affair. Just like the ride-or-die romance in this week's films, the 1967 counterculture classic 'Bonnie and Clyde' and the recent remix of the Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker myth, 'Queen and Slim'.How does the meaning of these sensual getaway stories change over time, and with the changing of the sexie lovers' race and social context? What do the siblings think of those brutal yet inevitable death scenes at the end of both movies? And how can YOU find ur own ride-or-die gangsters moll who is willing to go down in a blaze of glory with u? we don't know tbhBut listen in anyway, because both movies r DEVILISHLY stylish and tragique in their own unique way! and only one can win!TRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKS:Noah's Peckinpah ride-or-die 'boys movie' 'The Getaway'The only Tarantino movie Meg likes, 'Natural Born Killers'Eliza's fave hibristophilia movie Gun Crazy (and the recent Rough Cut piece about the film)EMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: 'Twilight' + 'Moonlight' Hosted on Acast. 34. Clue + Knives Out

This week the Janssen siblings and Anthony take the BORED out of BOARD game, by looking at not only the witty ensemble comedy 'Clue' but also 'Knives Out', last year's whodunnit hit that acts as a loving homage of 'Clue' and other retro murder mysteries. Both movies feature a murderer's row (literally!!! lmao!!!) of acting talent, and are set in big ol shambling aristocratic family homes, but is the central murder mystery at the heart of each film satisfying, or just a big stinky pile of red herrings? The gang puts on their lil deerstalker caps and comically oversized magnifying glasses to get to the bottom of both winding whodunnits, fully investigating Daniel Craig's so-so accent work and 'Clue''s most quotable Miss White moments. if ur Marta from 'Knives Out' be careful not to puke while listening cos this ep is SICKENINGTRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKS:Meg's niche German card game 'Elfer Raus'': https://www.amazon.com/Ravensburger-207541-ELFER-Raus/dp/B00LEVITMKEliza's Sondheim/Perkins mystery fave 'The Last of Sheila': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_of_SheilaNoah's other Rian Johnson genre remix 'Brick': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brick_(film)Anthony's incredible homemade artisanal version of 'Clue'!!! u can't play it but know that it exists and it is magnificentEMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: 'Bonnie and Clyde' + 'Queen and Slim' Hosted on Acast. It's our second Marty Scorsese episode and our first ever look into the filmography of Paul Schrader, both New Yorky New Hollywood movie bros who collaborated on 'Taxi Driver' and have here made their own attempts at telling stories of religious agony and ecstasy in historical Japan. The only problem? Both 2016's 'Silence' and 1985's 'Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters' are reeeeeally good n engaging n maybe made Noah have a spiritual moment, so where are we gonna land ???We argue about the technical achievements of 'Mishima' versus 'Silence''s painful reckoning with religious integrity, as well as playing a stupid lil minigame that proves Anthony knows everything about music and that the rest of the team is WOEFULLY lacking in their knowledge of Aardman's 'Flushed Away'. absolutely shameful.TRIPLET IN THE ATTIC LINKS:Meg's fave Schrader eco-drama 'First Reformed': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_ReformedNoah's other missionary misery movie 'The Mission': https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mission_(1986_film)Eliza's Kirsten Dunst harajuku appropriation music video 'Turning Japanese': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0X3CLJVMJUEMAIL: [email protected]: twinpicksFACEBOOK: @twinpickspodcastROUGH CUT: https://roughcutfilm.com/NEXT TIME: 'Clue' + 'Knives Out' Hosted on Acast. Film n culture genius Ivana Brehas brought us this pair of tenuously connected films, so we're all here together to break down their surprising similarities! Both the goofy family superhero 'Sky High' and 'The Stanford Prison Experiment' star Michael Angarano and Nicholas Braun, a real pair of 2000s-era 'oh yeah I know that guy' character actors. But the twindom doesn't end there! Both films also analyse the ways in which institutions (such as high school or uni) can have a power that goes beyond the educational, and separate or victimise the people they're tryna empower. So what's it gonna be; are you a hero or a villain, a guard or a prisoner? a Nicholas or a Michael? 31. Friends With Benefits + No Strings Attached

In one of the most prominent recent examples of a bizarre 'twin films' situation, 2011 saw the release of not one but TWO films about one half of the Mila Kunis/Ashton Kutcher power couple enjoying hot, sexy, meaningless sex - ooh yeah baby Shagadelic! But things get even weirder from there, since both 'Friends With Benefits' and 'No Strings Attached' also feature the stars of Darren Aronofsky's 'Black Swan'...and both films feature a second-act plot turn based around sick dads....what's goin on here???Meg, Noah, and Eliza have some feelings about these two movies about hot people trying not to catch feelings, and you'll have to listen in to see which horny coupling had better chemistry, out of Portman/Kutcher and Timberlake/Kunis. Look closely and u shall see that Pixar's 'A Bugs Life' and Akira Kurosawa's sweepingly influential 'Seven Samurai' kinda have the same plot; a band of skilled outsiders prepare to defend a village from being pillaged by sadistic attackers. We could've watched 'Seven Samurai' and 'The Magnificent Seven' OR we could've done 'A Bugs Life' and 'Antz'...but NO, we wanted to get into the tragic chivalry of Kurosawa's ronin AND Pixar's very nineties voice casting and CGI.Noah, Eliza, and Anthony break down the different displays of heroism in both movies, as well as choosing what their samurai weapons would be if they lived in feudal Japan. The only problem is, one is a revered satire of power and impotence, and the other plays its plot of mutually assured destruction totally straight. But maybe the 'boring' movie deserves some attention, too - can 'Fail Safe' be rescued from its reputation as an unfunny version of 'Dr Strangelove'? Some truth bombs are gonna be dropped. 17. Cats + Cat People

Put your paws up for the CATFIGHT of the century: Tom Hooper's musical failure 'Cats', and Jacques Tourneur's horrifying tale of repressed desire 'Cat People'. Let's be real Jellicles, only one of these movies has a chance at winning the siblings' vote this episode, BUT! The value of 'Cats' deserves to be seriously investigated, and Meg, Noah, and Eliza are brave enough to do it.Both of these films feature cats as highly sexual and death-obsessed beings, but we can only choose one, so don't pussy out - make the Jellicle choice with us! 14. The Irishman + Once Upon a Time in America

We got two Robert De Niro, time-traversing, auteuristic, upwards-of-three-hours-long gangster sagas here for ya, boss. Which one of them deserves to be crowned 'best sadboi mob epic', and which one is gonna be sleepin' with the fishes by the end of this episode? The gang's all here in this mildly xenophobic episode, where Meg, Noah, and Eliza analyse this year's Scorsese flick 'The Irishman' and Sergio Leone's labour of love 'Once Upon A Time In America'. 13. White Christmas + Black Christmas

This year, Santa brought us TWO monochromatically-titled movies about the holidays, and it's up to three lil Janssen elves to decide which one jingled our bells more successfully!! We check out the timeless and surprisingly progressive 'White Christmas', a 1954 Bing Crosby musical, before taking things a bit darker with the 1974 quasi-feminist proto-slasher 'Black Christmas'.Drop down our chimney this non-denominational holiday season and enjoy Meg being forced to sing way too many Christmas carols!!! ABOUT THIS SHOW
