Culture: The Grudge That Became a Peace Treaty
🐄 How can a grudge last so long? In 1375, the inhabitants of two small Pyrenean communities, situated between France and Spain, found themselves in a dispute over the use of a water source. As a resolution, it was agreed that three cows would be offered annually by way of reparation. A ruling that evolved into a tradition. To this day, three cows cross the Franco-Spanish border every year to honor the pledge made in the Middle Ages. Art: Jacques-Louis David, the Classical Avant-Garde
🎨 Jacques-Louis David is renowned for his grandiose paintings of Napoleon, as well as for being a leader of the neoclassical movement. Interestingly, his first choice was to bring back classical themes, such as Greek mythology. However, because of his involvement in the French Revolution, he started painting contemporary situations, such as “The Coronation of Napoleon”, which ironically made him one of the most avant-garde painters of his generation. This year, the Louvre Museum is celebrating the bicentennial of his death with a major exhibition. Science: Exploring the Skies in a Montgolfière
🎈 Flying had long been a dream of humankind. Yet it was only in the 18th century—the Age of Enlightenment, when science became a source of deep fascination—that this dream turned into reality. Thanks to the Montgolfier brothers who discovered that a balloon filled with hot air could rise above the colder air of the atmosphere. Art: Vincent Van Gogh, Between Shadow and Light
🎨 If you could look up the term "cursed artist" in the dictionary, you would certainly find the name of Vincent Van Gogh in the definition. This post-impressionist painter from the end of the 19th century left his mark on history not only through his exceptional work with colors and light, but also through his short and tortured life. History: Versailles, Of Power and Beauty
🏰 In 2023, the Château de Versailles is celebrating its 400-year anniversary with a full year of shows and parties on the site. Quite an appropriate hommage to the palace that has seen some of the most (in)famous historical figures, and witnessed some of the key historical moments of modern European history.
