Wheeler reflects on developing at “The Mecca,” beginning his Howard career as a walk-on and becoming one of the most explosive playmakers in Howard Bison football history. He finished his college career with nearly 2,500 all-purpose yards, set a Howard record with three kickoff-return touchdowns and helped the Bison capture back-to-back MEAC championships. After entering the NFL with the Chicago Bears, Wheeler faced a major setback when a preseason ACL injury interrupted a promising start. He discusses the perseverance required to overcome that injury, continue pursuing his goals and rebuild his path through the United Football League. Wheeler delivered a championship season with the Louisville Kings, rushing for 541 yards and setting a UFL single-game record with four rushing touchdowns. He then earned 2026 United Bowl MVP honors after producing 81 rushing yards and a go-ahead 44-yard touchdown in Louisville’s championship victory over the D.C. Defenders. That performance helped Wheeler earn a one-year contract with the Buffalo Bills and another chance to prove himself on football’s biggest stage. Ian also discusses his academic success at Howard, earning a 3.57 GPA and being accepted into the Howard University College of Medicine. From HBCU football and MEAC championships to professional football and medical-school aspirations, his story represents determination, discipline and excellence on and off the field. UMES enters the tournament battle-tested after a competitive MEAC schedule and a narrow 77–73 loss to North Carolina Central earlier this season, proving the Hawks can compete with one of the conference’s top teams. Statistically, the Hawks have relied on balanced contributions throughout the season. Zion Obanla leads UMES in scoring and rebounding, while Michael Teal leads the team in assists, highlighting the Hawks’ balanced offensive attack. The UMES Hawks finished the regular season second in the MEAC standings with an 11–3 conference record and an 18–13 overall record, positioning themselves as one of the top contenders entering the MEAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. UMES heads into the postseason with momentum after defending home court against Delaware State in the regular-season finale with a 56–48 victory. The Hawks showcased their defensive identity in that game by forcing 30 turnovers and recording 14 steals, reflecting the aggressive defensive style that has helped power UMES throughout the season. Several Hawks stepped up in that win, including Ashanti Lynch, who led the team with 12 points, while Kalise Hill and Lainey Allen provided key contributions as UMES controlled the tempo and executed defensively. Now the Hawks will face Delaware State once again in the MEAC Women’s Basketball Tournament, as UMES looks to continue its strong play and make a deep postseason run toward March Madness. Washington recently re-signed WR Treylon Burks, DE Drake Jackson, DE Deatrich Wise Jr., K Jake Moody, and punter Tress Way, while also extending offensive linemen Nick Allegretti and Andrew Wylie to two-year deals as the team works to maintain depth and stability across the roster. One of the key moves is the two-year extension for Nick Allegretti, keeping the versatile offensive lineman in Washington through the 2027 season. Allegretti stepped into multiple roles along the offensive line last season, including center late in the year when injuries impacted the unit. At the same time, the Commanders are making notable roster changes to prepare for free agency and improve financial flexibility. Key developments this offseason include: • Center Tyler Biadasz being released, creating additional salary cap space and potentially opening a need at the center position. • Cornerback Marshon Lattimore expected to be released, a move that could free significant cap space as Washington reshapes its defense. • Wide receiver Deebo Samuel not expected to return in 2026, which may lead the Commanders to pursue additional wide receiver depth during free agency or the NFL Draft. • The future of offensive lineman Chris Paul remains uncertain as the team evaluates its options along the offensive line.
