Governor solar
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger joined nervous Staple Center officials atop the Staples Center to ceremoniously install the last of 1727 solar panels. The 345 kilowatt system covers 24,000 feet, including new panels on the Nokia Theater. The system will offset 10,000 tons of CO2 in the next 25 years as well as 60 tons of dangerous pollutants like Sulfur dioxide. Even though the new panels provide less than 5% of the Staples Center’s power, the Governor believes it’s a positive step. At the news conference the Governor again affirmed his commitment to renewable energy. Thumbnail Photo: Podcast: governorsolar.MP3

Cal State renewable energy
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced today a partnership with SunEdison that will bring eight megawatts of solar power to 15 Cal State campuses across the state. Such a system is already in place at Cal State Dominquez Hills, where the Governor spoke in front of canopied solar panels that cover a parking lot on the campus. By the end of 2008 or early 2009, these panels will be up and running. Eight megawatts is enough energy to meet 25 percent of Dominguez Hills energy costs, and Arnold reminded the crowd that every bit of energy saved here is energy that won’t need to be generated in a power station. He hopes that if this partnership is successful that other state owned buildings can get the same treatment. He also announced the creation of the web site: www.renewableenergy.dgs.ca.gov, which tracks energy use in state buildings. Arnold hopes this will bring California closer to being the greenest place on earth. Thumbnail Photo: Podcast: solararnold.mp3
