Vet Candy's "Unmasking the Opioid Crisis: A Veterinary Professional's Role Revealed" - Episode 1
Welcome to the VMAE’s Veterinary Practice Health podcast. We proudly present a unique collaboration featuring Vet Candy's insightful series: Unmasking the Opioid Crisis: A Veterinary Professional's Role Revealed. This three-episode program offers an in-depth exploration of the opioid epidemic’s effect on veterinary medicine and the vital role veterinary professionals play in addressing this nationwide crisis and provides a deep understanding of the opioid epidemic, its impact on both human and animal welfare, and the responsibilities of veterinarians in managing opioid use. Episode 1 : In 1980, a letter in the New England Journal of Medicine downplayed opioid addiction risk, shaping subsequent prescribing practices. Opioid prescriptions surged in the 1980s fueled by OxyContin approval in 1995 and endorsement for chronic pain in 1997. Aggressive marketing led to a tenfold increase in OxyContin prescriptions from 1997 to 2002. By 2006, the US had 72 opioid prescriptions per 100 people. This contributed to an opioid epidemic with over 62 million patients filling prescriptions by 2016. * Continuing Education Info: This Program is approved by AAVSB RACE for veterinary technicians and by VHMA for veterinary practice manager continuing education credit.
