Ep. 223: Jason C. Chapin (Son of Harry Chapin) Mr. Chapin is Director of Workforce Development at The Westchester County Association, an economic development organization. He previously worked for The City University of New York, The State University of New York and The WorkPlace, Inc. and has managed programs that have provided education, training and employment services to 25,000 unemployed and underemployed individuals. Jason received his B.A. from Colgate University and his M.B.A. from Fordham University. He previously served on the boards of The Harry Chapin Foundation and Child Care Council of Westchester and is currently on the Westchester Putnam Workforce Development Board. Mr. Chapin was a producer of “Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something”, an award-winning documentary film about his father’s musical career and humanitarian work. He is a producer of “Cat’s in the Cradle 50th Anniversary Celebration”, a documentary film about the #1 hit song that continues to impact countless lives around the world. Jason lives in NY with his wife and has three children.About Harry Chapin Harry Chapin was born on December 7, 1942, and grew up in New York near the Hudson River Piers and then Brooklyn Heights. In 1957, influenced by The Weavers at Carnegie Hall album, he started to learn guitar and banjo, and in 1958 he and his brothers, Tom and Steve, started a band, playing in the neighborhood. In the mid-1960s he entered the film industry and received an Oscar nomination for his documentary Legendary Champions. In the late 1960s, he started writing narrative songs, and in 1971 he started his own band with cellist Tim Scott, lead guitarist Ron Palmer and Big John Wallace, a friend from Brooklyn Heights, who would remain in his band for the rest of Chapin's life. Chapin's first album was Heads & Tales and included what was to become his signature song, the now classic "Taxi," which became the most requested song in America for 10 weeks in a row and earned Chapin a Grammy nomination as best new artist. His next hit was "W*O*L*D," and then in 1974 his wife Sandy wrote the words for his breakthrough hit "Cat's in the Cradle" which reached number one on the charts and helped him earn another Grammy nomination as best male vocal performer and a gold record for the album Verities and Balderdash. Altogether, Harry Chapin produced 11 albums including Sniper and Other Love Songs, Short Stories and Sequel. He also won an Emmy Award for his contribution to ABC television's children's series Make a Wish and his Broadway show The Night That Made America Famous earned two Tony nominations. Harry Chapin is remembered by a generation of music fans as one of America's greatest musical storytellers and troubadours, but as Ralph Nader said, "To talk about Harry Chapin only as a singer-composer is like viewing Theodore Roosevelt as a state assemblyman or Babe Ruth as a pitcher. More than any other entertainer in his generation, Harry was a citizen-artist." Chapin performed more than 250 concerts every year and donated the proceeds for half of them to charity. After his concerts, he would go into the lobby and sign autographs and sell records, T-shirts and songbooks, and every penny he took in would go to charity, especially the battle to end world hunger. Ep. 222: Jim Jocoy (Photographer) In 1969 the family settled in Sunnyvale, California, and in 1976, at the start of the San Francisco punk scene, Jocoy became a student at UC Santa Cruz. By 1977 he had dropped out of school and spent his nights immersed in the bourgeoning San Francisco club scene. In full embrace of the culture, Jocoy and his friends explored art in every way they could: forming bands, making photographs and films, writing poetry and publishing zines.Jocoy obsessively photographed what was in front of him. In bedrooms, bathrooms, strip clubs, at punk shows, alleyways and bars. Jocoy found outlets for showcasing his photos in his own punk/art zine, Widows and Orphans, as well as in seminal SF zines Search and Destroy, REsearch, and Punk Globe.During this time Jocoy’s photos were shown in public only twice, the first, a show held at San Francisco State University featuring the Xerox color prints he’d produce during off hours at the photocopy shop where he worked, and later as a slide show presented at William Burroughs’ 70th birthday party. Ep. 221: Mena Suvari (Actor/Author/Activist) MENA SUVARI made her film debut working with director Gregg Araki in the cult-classic Nowhere (1997). That was soon followed by the back to back blockbuster successes of American Pie (1999) and the five-time Oscar?-winner American Beauty (1999). Her genuine and moving performance as ‘Angeles Hayes’ in the latter iconic film, directed by Sam Mendes, earned her a BAFTA nod for Best Supporting Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Ensemble Cast. Suvari also won a Movieline Award for Breakthrough Performance. She reunited with Jason Biggs in Amy Heckerling’s romantic comedy Loser (2000) and continued to showcase her range in projects as diverse as Jonas Akerlund’s cult classic Spun (2002), Rob Reiner’s Rumor Has It (2005), Tony Scott’s Domino (2005), Beauty Shop (2005), and Factory Girl (2006), amongst others, while also contributing sequels to the American Pie franchise (American Pie 2 in 2001 and American Reunion in 2012). Suvari had critically acclaimed roles in the independent films Becks (2017); Don’t Tell a Soul (2019), starring opposite Rainn Wilson, which was accepted and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival; and Grace and Grit (2021), starring opposite Frances Fisher and Stuart Townsend, based on the best-selling book, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which garnered her an award for best Actor.  Mena stars in the film Ick (2024) which premiered at TIFF and recently released Fireflies at El Mozote (2026) starring opposite Paz Vega and Vampires of the Velvet Lounge (2026) starring opposite Dichen Lachman and Rosa Salazar.  Some of her upcoming credits include Down the Arm of God (2026) starring opposite Caleb Landry Jones, Strobe (2026) starring opposite Grace Van Dien and Kill Me Now (2027) directed by Michael Polish. On the small screen, Suvari reteamed with American Beauty scribe Alan Ball with an arc on the award-winning HBO series Six Feet Under (2004), which garnered her a Screen Actors Guild nomination, played the iconic Black Dahlia in Ryan Murphy’s television series American Horror Story (2011 and 2018), appeared on the hit series Chicago Fire (2013), and continued to work in the medium as the lead in the Amazon pilot Hysteria (2014) and WeTv’s miniseries South of Hell (2015), executive produced by Eli Roth and Jason Blum for Blumhouse Productions.  Suvari also tried her hand at sketch comedy, taking successful turns on the series Inside Amy Schumer (2016) and Hot Date (2017), co-starred in the highly anticipated television series American Woman (2018), produced by John Wells for the Paramount Network and the Lifetime film House of Chains (2022) which had the highest viewership of the year and was critically acclaimed for Mena’s performance.  Most recently, Mena received a 2024 Primetime Emmy nomination for her role as Detective Thompson in the short-form sci-fi series RZR, specifically in the category of Outstanding Performer in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. After many queries from my movie fans and friends who asked if I was writing a Memoir, I realized now because of the pandemic and lockdown I have time to remember and capture memories that were held hostage in my mind and are revived through the vehicle of some poetry, tawdry excerpts from my diary when I was a teen, passionate letters from George Kuchar and close friends, happenings and uncontrolled outbursts of ideas.The reader is invited to an adventure through the realm of memories, and a dance through the doors of consciousness.This memoir is not held to the constraints of a linear narrative such as in the form of traditional chapters. Instead it moves in many flowing directions through time spewing forth recollections in its own moments.Even now, I tend to think in imagery. Known as the “8mm Mozarts”, their films were noticeably different than other underground films of the time. They were wildly funny, but also human and vulnerable.Their films have inspired many filmmakers, including John Waters, Buck Henry, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Wayne Wang (all are interviewed in this film). Ep. 219: Marcia Bricker Halperin (Photographer)Marcia Bricker Halperin is a New York-based photographer who has spent over 50 years documenting the ever-changing city streets. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Brooklyn College and developed her eye under the tutelage of former Photo League photographers, including Walter Rosenblum and Lisette Model. They inspired her to document the city’s transformations. Bricker Halperin is drawn to personal, long-form storytelling, which allows her to turn everyday sights into poignant moments. Her photography has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography, and isrepresented in several private collections. She recently had a solo museum exhibition at the Edward Hopper House Museum in Nyack, New York. Her debutbook of photographs, Kibbitz & Nosh: When We All Met at Dubrow’s Cafeteria, was published by Cornell University Press in 2023 and won a National Jewish Book Award and a gold PX3 Prix de la Photographie for documentary book. Bruce Hackney, US manager of Weinberger estate and co-author of the Weinberger monograph Rebel Youth. Karlheinz Weinberger was a Swiss photographer, whose work mainly dealt with people on the margins of society, with outsiders and outlaws. Buzzy was an animatronic character featured in Cranium Command, an attraction at Epcot that operated from 1989 to 2007 within the Wonders of Life pavilion. I was seven at the time. I knew from that moment on that my future lay in making “noise.” I created my first composition for orchestra at age ten. There was no mystery throughout my formative years as to which path I would follow.Before my twentieth birthday, I was fortunate to begin my professional career writing for the Children’s Television Workshop for many animated letter commercials (some are still on the air). Later that same year, I was tasked with creating the theme music for the ABC network’s Saturday Superstar Movie and commissioned to score three one-hour specials for that time slot.I found a niche in creating music for commercials. Ep. 204: Mike Kuchar (Kuchar Brothers) filmmaker/painter/comic artist/cinematographer I’ve been a fan of The Kuchar Brothers for almost twenty years and they are among my top 5 directors. They are known as heroes to filmmaker John Waters and were part of the underground film scene in New York City in the late 1950’s and 1960’s as championed by film curator Jonas Mekas. This was one of my favorite interviews and one of the biggest honors I’ve ever had in doing this podcast. Mike is one of the funniest, kindest, creative, and most thoughtful filmmakers of the past 50 years. The way he speaks about making films is truly magical. The care he puts into the work and the reverence he has for the actors in his films are a true rarity. We talked about a lot of topics, but my favorite thing was when Mike spoke about remembering his birth. That’s the kind of magical and wonderful things he can do with his brain. I’m pretty sure he spoke about that ability as a way of time traveling through his own memories. He is operating at genius level. PennSound: George KucharMike Kuchar has been a majorly influential figure in the underground film and comics scenes since the 1960s, first in his hometown of the Bronx and, from the 1970s on, in the creative hotbed of San Francisco. Together with his twin brother George, the Kuchars gained cult recognition for their over-the-top, no-budget films that sent up Hollywood epics, weepy romances, and sci-fi B movies. In iconic films like Sins of the Fleshapoids (1965), The Craven Sluck (1967), and Death Quest of the Ju-Ju Cults(1976), Mike developed his distinctive style that jettisoned traditional narrative structure and acting professionalism in favor of extravagant, tender sagas that would have a significant impact on emerging theorizations and expressions of camp as an artistic sensibility. John Waters, Guy Maddin, and Wayne Wang all cite the Kuchars as an important influence. About Bonnie “Prince” Billy The man who sings and composes under the name Bonnie "Prince" Billy and acts under the name Will Oldham has, over the past three-plus decades, made an idiosyncratic journey through, and an indelible mark on, the worlds of indie rock and independent cinema.About “We Are Together Again” Out Now! In 2019 we started in to exploring a process of making Louisville, KY records again, in Louisville studios with Louisville musicians. We did I Made a Place this way, then Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You. Things were going well, and then they started going better. The Purple Bird alit on our shoulders and sung its mating call into the ears of listeners all over the world, thanks primarily to the guidance of friend and producer David Ferguson. That bird is out flying around still, leaving abundances of smiling faces in its mighty wake. Having learned thus to fly, Bonny got back to work on the Louisville-first mandate, digging back into songs left open on the table during the Purple process. Bonny went into End of an Ear studio with Jim Marlowe engineering and co-producing; together they assembled a platoon of brilliant singers, blowers and pickers, including especially Bonny’s current tour mates Jacob Duncan (flute and saxophone) and Thomas Deakin (clarinet, whistle, baritone electric guitar, accordion, cornet). Chris Bush applied his modular synth skills to Duncan’s sax for “Davey Dead”. And harpist Erin Hill, who Oldham first met back in the 1980s when he was a wee lad, sings and plays all over “Davey Dead”. Oldham’s cousin Ryder McNair took a break from assistant-scoring Ridley Scott productions to write string quartet arrangements for these songs, and Will’s brother Ned returns after two decades to sing and play bass. This record was made closer to the Ohio River than any Oldham’s been involved with since 1993’s Palace Brothers There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You. Louisville’s current-and-past vital musical community is hi-lighted on every song. Catherine Irwin, who sang on the BPB release Ease Down the Road, is back here on “Hey Little” and “Vietnam Sunshine”. Lacey Guthrie, Tory Fisher and Katie Peabody, the three front women of the band Duchess, sing together on the opening and closing songs, parallel odes to the beast that is fear. The door was swung ajar by the Purple Bird, with its new take on homespun country bombast, and Bonny has stuck his gorgeous foot into that door to whisper his “I love you”s to all who need them (which we kind of all do). We start small, continue small, like oak tree seeds or the sperm-and-egg concoctions mixologized by the parents of movers-and-shakers since the dawn of time. Ep. 200: Guy Maddin (Filmmaker) Guy Maddin has directed thirteen feature-length movies, most recently Rumours (2024), starring Cate Blanchett and Alicia Vikander; as well as The Forbidden Room (2015), My Winnipeg (2007), and The Saddest Music in the World (2003). He has also mounted over seventy performances of his films around the world featuring live elements – orchestra, sound effects, singing and narration — most recently, The Green Fog (2016), which was accompanied live by the Kronos Quartet. His screenplay collaborators include Nobel Laureate Kazuo Ishiguro and poet John Ashbery. His movies Archangel (1990) & The Heart of the World (2000) both won National Society of Film Critics Awards for Best Experimental Film. Deborah Dash Moore Walkers in the City: Jewish Street Photographers of Midcentury New York - In the middle of the twentieth century, good cameras became smaller and lighter, enabling street photographers to roam alleyways, ride elevated trains and subways, and stroll beaches in summertime to capture daily life with urgency and intimacy. Walkers in the City showcases the distinctive urban vision that working-class Jewish photographers produced with these new cameras on New York City's streets and in public spaces. Drawing on the experiences of and photographs by a generation of young Jewish photographers who belonged to the New York Photo League, Deborah Dash Moore offers a new perspective on New York as seen through their eyes--a cityscape of working-class people and democratizing public transit. With their cameras, they pictured Gotham's abrasive social milieu and its evanescent textures and light, creating an archive of vernacular images of city life and a distinctive tradition of street photography that would be widely imitated. Scarlet Page has been a passionate photographer her whole life and her education culminated in studying a degree in photography in the early ’90s. She quickly developed her own fresh, documentary style of reportage. She travelled America with The Smashing Pumpkins, The Beastie Boys and the other acts on the Lollapolooza tour of 1994.  The following year she had a shot feature in the album artwork of The Verve’s ‘A Northern Soul'. Working on ‘A Northern Soul’ accelerated Scarlet’s career and since then she has gone on to work with some of the music world’s biggest acts. She worked closely with Robbie Williams on several projects including album artwork, behind the scenes material and the acclaimed book ‘Somebody Someday’. She has toured the World extensively with bands such as The Darkness, Placebo, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Rolling Stones and Stereophonics. Her photographs have been used to grace album covers, album artwork, tour material, book covers and as collected prints. She continues to be commissioned by all the major record labels to shoot artwork, press and marketing campaigns for international bands. Scarlet’s calm demeanour and professional approach have enabled her to diversify the subjects that she photographs. Subsequently she now works closely with an interesting variety of clients including Fearne Cotton and her Happy Place Festival brand, The Henley Literary Festival (capturing celebrity writers, politicians, bloggers, TV personalities etc) and inspiring business women such as Jo Tutchener Sharp, founder of clothing brand Scamp and Dude, to create content for all of her platforms. Scarlet has also worked extensively for charities including CALM, PDSA, Teenage Cancer Trust and Warchild. Exhibitions of her work have been shown at The Royal Albert Hall, Proud Gallery, Camden and, in 2019, Scarlet exhibited and worked with local celebrated musicians in Buenos Aires as part of her Resonators + project. Since the pandemic there has been a huge interest in Scarlet’s archive work - her limited edition prints alongside her weekly ‘words behind the shot’ videos have been gaining a cult following. Ep. 192: Charles Traub (Photographer/Educator) Charles H. Traub was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1945. He studied English literature at the University of Illinois, and joined the Peace Corps after graduation in 1967. An accident in Ethiopia forced him home to Kentucky where he met Ralph Eugene Meatyard, who became an important inspiration and friend. After service in the United States Army in 1969, he decided to pursue photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. There he studied with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel and Garry Winogrand. His thesis of abstracted black-and-white landscapes “Edge to Edge” was widely exhibited, and featured in a solo show at the Art Institute of Chicago. Following his landscape work he made three well-known series of black-and-white photographs: Street and Parties (from The Chicago Period), and his first monograph, Beach, all used an innovative vignette on a Rolleiflex SL66.In 1971 Traub began teaching full time at Columbia College, Chicago and was responsible for developing new curriculum for the growing public interest in the medium. Traub was instrumental in developing the school’s Contemporary Trends Lecture Series that celebrated renowned international photographers and image-makers. Subsequently, he became chairperson of the department and founded the Chicago Center for Contemporary Photography, which became the Museum of Contemporary Photography (MOCP). In 1973, along with his colleague Douglas Baz, Traub went on a sabbatical to make the Cajun Document, an extensive look at the culture of the Louisiana bayous.Traub’s first major body of work in color, Street Portraits, began in 1976, continued after his move to New York City, and culminated in the book Lunchtime. His move to New York was followed by his first solo exhibition of photographs at the Light Gallery. It’s owner, Tennyson Schad, then hired Traub to become director of this prestigious gallery. Traub curated numerous exhibitions there, including The New Vision: Forty Years of Photography at the Institute of Design; Aaron Siskind’s Harlem Document; Designed for Photography; and The Color Work of the FSA. Traub also showcased major photographers new to the gallery: William Klein, Luigi Ghirri, Ray Metzker, Mario Giacomelli and Louis Faurer among others.After leaving the gallery in 1980 Traub continued his personal work and formed the Wayfarer partnership with Jerry Gordon—a specialized editorial and corporate photography agency. Their work was featured in many magazines, including Life, Time, Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, New York and Avenue as well as annual reports for Fortune 500 companies. Throughout the 1980s Traub traveled to Italy, Brazil, Haiti, Morocco and the Far East for his personal work. Dolce Viaand In the Still Life are compendiums of photographs from that period.In 1987 Traub was asked to design a graduate studies program for the School of Visual Arts, which became the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department. Since its inception, the program has been distinguished for its innovative use of digital technology, the inclusion of all aspects of the lens and screen arts and its internationally celebrated faculty. As an early advocate of the power of digital photography, Traub adapted it to his own practice. His philosophy about the importance of digital thinking is reflected in the manifesto “Creative Interlocutor” and the textbook In the Realm of the Circuit. As the former caretaker of the Arlene Gottfried Legacy Instagram Project, I spent over 60 hours of research and around 18 hours of doing 12 interviews. Having done all of that, the name Maria Mayer Feng kept coming up again and again. It was my understanding she was considered to have had a huge role in Arlene finally putting out books of her own personal photography which had been hiding under her bed for years. Maria helped her make mach ups of book projects, and walked her lovingly through the process. It was such a pleasure to speak to Maria and it was abundantly clear how much she cared about Arlene and how clear it was to Maria that Arlene had a rare talent. I mean there were a lot of folks who had big parts in this process as well, but I truly believe that Maria light the first match in the process. The film combines never-before-seen archival footage with the testimonies of over forty different people who, working independently and at great risk to themselves and their families, saved thousands of Jewish strangers from almost certain death. The cast, including Helen Mirren, F. Murray Abraham, Carrie Coon, Jeremy Irons, Ellen Burstyn, and Stephen Fry, have amassed five Oscars (and over twenty nominations), over sixty Emmy nominations, and over twenty-five Tony nominations in their illustrious careers.THIS ORDINARY THING- DIRECTOR STATEMENTNo film has ever changed me nearly the way this one has. To be honest, I never wanted to make it. I never wanted to make a Holocaust film. I never even wanted people to know I was Jewish. But now all that has changed. Here’s how it happened: one day in the Spring of 2022, a wonderful man I’d worked with in the past, Albert M. Tapper, called me and said what all filmmakers dream of hearing: “Do you have any films that need funding?” I didn’t - but said yes, then quickly drew up a list of seven possible projects and went to lunch with him. As we sat down and made small talk, before we could even get to my list, Al and I stumbled across a funny coincidence: we both knew about an organization called The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, that honored and supported non - Jewish people who had helped Jewish families during the Holocaust.Al’s face lit up -- as a staunch defender of the Jewish faith, he wanted to make a film that would honor and thank those people who had helped Jews during World War 2. As a non - practicing Jew in his mid - 50s, who had grown up delighting in the fact that because of my surname, no one would ever know I was Jewish, I knew it was too late. Given the state of the world, could I really afford NOT to make a film that honored people who tried to point out the essential sameness of all humans? By the end of the meal, the die was cast. In my researching, I soon found a treasure trove of interviews that had been conducted with the people who would become the subjects of the film – who are often called ‘The Righteous’ or ‘The Righteous among Nation s. ’ I had heard of Oskar Schindler, of course, but I had been totally unaware that there were more than 20,000 people who had been honored at Yad Vahsem in Jerusalem. These were all people who, working independently, at great risk to themselves and their families, saved thousands from almost certain death. The interviews I read were amazing and wildly varied – people from all walks of life, every part of Europe – these astonishing pockets of goodness in a sea of evil. And I realized what the film would be: celebrated actors reading from these remarkable transcripts, from people helping those who were "different" from them, with real archival footage from the time. I wanted to bring this all to life as best as I possibly could, telling the stories of these incredible people. Of course, none of the subjects of the film thought of themselves as heroes. Years later, many of them were inscribed on 'The Avenue of the Righteous' in Yad Vashem in Israel, given awards, and had trees planted in their honor.
