PORTO (2017) - Paired with Bojador Vinho de Talha and Moscatel de Setúbal

Sen Us Your Thoughts!Honoring the 10th Anniversary of actor Anton Yelchin's passing in 2016 at the insanely young age of 27. PORTO was released posthumously, and since our own Dave Baxter recenty visited the city of Porto for the first time, and currently sells Portuguese wines in LA as his day job, this seemed like a perfect choice for us to tackle. This is a challenging film, equal parts mesmerizing and frustrating, a film that plays with time, rejects psychology, yet is confined to a magical evening between a French woman and an American man in Northern Portugal.THE WINES:2010 Jose Maria de Fonseca “Alambre” Moscatel de Setubal, Portugal2022 Bojador Vinho de Talha Branco, Alentejo, PortugalSupport the showOur Sponsor: CURATED WINE SHOP, mid-city Los Angeles, they'll help you pair wine with any movie!Curated-Wines.comBecome a "Produce-er", commisson your own episode, get a shout out on the show, and more at:vintertainmentstudios.comFollow us on the socials!https://www.instagram.com/vintertainmentpodhttps://bsky.app/profile/davebaxter.bsky.socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@vintertainmentstudios

A Spaghetti Western Xmas: A PISTOL FOR RINGO (1965) Paired With Cremant and Cream Sherry

Sen Us Your Thoughts!A surprisng Christmas movie in the shape of a Spaghetti Western, A PISTOL FOR RINGO is written and Directed by Duccio Tessari, who co-wrote A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS with Sergio Leone, the film that kick-started the Spaghetti Western genre and was thhe first of the Clint Eastwood "Man With No Name" films.Inspired by the succeess of that film, Tessari decided to make his own. He had already made a "sword and sandal" film with actor and ex-stuntman Giuliano Gemma (here credited as "Montgomery Wood".) Gemma plays Ringo, a character that is in many ways an exact contrast to Eastwood's Man With No Name: he's charming, talkative, joyful, clean shaven, well dressed, and drinks milk instead of whiskey.THE WINES (AI-Free Search Links):Domaine Ligier Cremant du Jura Rose BrutEmilio Hidalgo "Morenita" Cream Sherry JerezSupport the showOur Sponsor: CURATED WINE SHOP, mid-city Los Angeles, they'll help you pair wine with any movie!Curated-Wines.comBecome a "Produce-er", commisson your own episode, get a shout out on the show, and more at:vintertainmentstudios.comFollow us on the socials!https://www.instagram.com/vintertainmentpodhttps://bsky.app/profile/davebaxter.bsky.socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@vintertainmentstudios

THE RUNNING MAN (1987) Paired with Love and Hate

Sen Us Your Thoughts! With the brand new Edgar Wright re-adaptation about to drop on Friday, we decided to revisit the OG 1987 movie, itself an adaptation of the “Richard Bachman” novel, itself the pseudonym that Stephen King wrote his non-horror novels under, something he managed to keep secret for over a decade and hysterically the person who secured the movie rights to the book had no idea it was King!!!We deep dive into this history, then talk at length about the movie’s themes and whether or not they resonate today (we did NOT agree on this point!) A man falsely accused of crimes forced to fend for his life on a televised game show where the stakes are life and death all for the entertainment of the passive masses…that sure sounds pretty resonate today, doesn’t it?And in broad strokes, it absolutely is. VINTERVIEW: Director Matt Battaglia Talks Georgian Wine Doc THE RED LINE

Sen Us Your Thoughts!Watch THE RED LINE Documentary HERE.We’ve been following Matt Battaglia on Substack for a couple of years now, but in his role as a comic creator. (And for those just joining us or with short memories, once upon a time we were “Wine and Comics”, a publication and YouTube show dedicated to precisely that, before expanding out into all types of entertainment/media.)I purchased Matt’s first full graphic novel as a one man show writer/artist, HOUSE ON FIRE and absolutely adored it.But wildly, his comics aren’t why we’re featuring Matt on the podcast today! Instead, he reached out via DM to let me know that he had just completed directing a short 20+ minute documentary on Georgian winery "Papari Valley” run by Ketevan “Keti” Gurabanidze, Shalva “Nukri” Kurdadze, and their son Sandro. If you're in the States, distributor BLACK LAMB carries Papari Valley wines, and can be purchased here.Support the showOur Sponsor: CURATED WINE SHOP, mid-city Los Angeles, they'll help you pair wine with any movie!Curated-Wines.comBecome a "Produce-er", commisson your own episode, get a shout out on the show, and more at:vintertainmentstudios.comFollow us on the socials!https://www.instagram.com/vintertainmentpodhttps://bsky.app/profile/davebaxter.bsky.socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@vintertainmentstudios

VINTERFICATION: Script vs. Screen - SIX FEET UNDER Pilot Episode

Sen Us Your Thoughts!Welcome to out first “Vinterfication” episode! Vin-I-fication is what a winemaker does - all the decisions he or she makes - to transform grapes, the raw materials, into a final wine. And so Vin-TER-fication is when we compare the raw materials of a work of entertanment - the script of a tv episode, movie, or comic - and compare it to the final produced thing.Today we tackle one of the TV shows that helped launch America’s “Golden Age” of television - SIX FEET UNDER. And tell you what to pair with each, whether you're reading the script, or watching the aired episode. The Wines mentioned in this episode (more information can be found on our Substack VintertainmentStudios.com)2007 Bodegas Navalon Anciano 'Aged 10 Years' Gran Reserva TempranilloBodega Dehesa de los Canonigos Clarete Luzianilla, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2021Haus Marke S-22 Solera Red Blend, Burgenland, Austria (93 Points, James Suckling)Support the showOur Sponsor: CURATED WINE SHOP, mid-city Los Angeles, they'll help you pair wine with any movie!Curated-Wines.comBecome a "Produce-er", commisson your own episode, get a shout out on the show, and more at:vintertainmentstudios.comFollow us on the socials!https://www.instagram.com/vintertainmentpodhttps://bsky.app/profile/davebaxter.bsky.socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@vintertainmentstudios

Wine and Movies: BABY BOOM (1987) - Happy Mother's Day!

Sen Us Your Thoughts!Today, for Mom's Day, we tackle the 1987 feature film directed and co-written by Charles Shyer (Father of the Bride) and produced and co-wrritten by Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride, Private Benjamin). The cast is STACKED - Dianne Keaton, Harold Ramis, James Spader, Sam Shephard, Victoria Jackson, Sam Wanamaker. It features a very 80's baby and is ostensibly a feminist movie but has become horribly dated since its release. Now coming across as moe of a Hallmark movie than a true blue equality manifesto, BABY BOOM is an oldie but not quite a goodie.Nevertheless, it's worth a revisit to see how far we've come. A few moments are still authentically funny, and we of course paired it with two wines: one that matches the film's deficits, and one that contrasts it and gives you what you're missing!DALLAS' WINE: Charles Shaw (2 Buck Chuck! Francis Ford Coppola: Winery Godfather to MegaFlopolis, Part 2 - Megalopolis (2024)

Sen Us Your Thoughts! Here’s PART TWO of our coverage of Francis Ford Coppola’s Alpha and Omega of his career. Make sure you check out PART ONE where we cover The Godfather (1972) and the rise, almost fall, then final sell-off of Coppola’s winery empire in Napa, Sonoma, and Oregon. Here in PART TWO we cover the Omega, MEGALOPOLIS (2024). And taste two well-aged Coppola wines - a 1998 Niebaum-Coppola “Cask” Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2000 Niebaum-Coppola Cabernet Franc! - and say which wine pairs best with which film.We opened these two bottles at Curated Wine Shop (go follow them on IG!) We brought them randomly, spur of the moment, this was not planned or mentioned to the Curated folks in advance. And when we arrived, and told them what we had and why we were opening them, they said: “Oh, Megalopolis? The Production Designer, Bradley Rubin, is sitting right over there!”Soooo…yeah. We sure as shit called him over and he graciously allowed us to talk his ear off about his exeperience on making the film!!! Note that this was a very impromptu recording, so the audio is muddy, music and background noise abound, and Brad is a soft spoken person, but it’s all legible!Enjoy, my friends.Support the showOur Sponsor: CURATED WINE SHOP, mid-city Los Angeles, they'll help you pair wine with any movie!Curated-Wines.comBecome a "Produce-er", commisson your own episode, get a shout out on the show, and more at:vintertainmentstudios.comFollow us on the socials!https://www.instagram.com/vintertainmentpodhttps://bsky.app/profile/davebaxter.bsky.socialhttps://www.youtube.com/@vintertainmentstudios

Sen Us Your Thoughts!Today is the first of THREE PARTS (well, two main parts + a bonus companion "Vinterview"!)In this episode we cover the Alpha of Coppola's career, THE GODFATHER (1972).In PART TWO we'll cover the Omega, MEGALOPOLIS (2024). And then taste two well-aged Coppola wines and say which wine pairs best with which film.Along the way, we'll also chronicle the rise and fall of Coppola's wine empire, from its humble beginnings in Napa, to it's almost dissolution in the early 90's, to its massive expansion to Sonoma and Oregon in the 2000's, to its sale in 2021 in order to finance his lifelong ambition - to film his 40-years-in-the-making Megalopolis. And then take stock of what still exists today. Then in our companion Vinterview, we'll be interviewing one of the actresses from the Megalopolis movie! And whoever you think it might be - no, it's not her. (It's gonna be a wacky surprise.)LINKS TO THINGS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:How Dracula (1992) Rescued Coppola's Winery - Our own article about how Coppola almost lost it all in the early 90's, only to have his Bram Stoker's Dracula film turn it all around. There would have been nothing to sell to finance Megalopolis if there had been no Dracula. What Went Wrong (Podcast) - Our fave movie podcast that has  2-part chronicle of how The Godfather was made, and it's the best version of this story out there in podcast form. Wine and Movies: THE LINGUINI INCIDENT (1991) - Director's Cut

Sen Us Your Thoughts! Also known as Houdini & Company, The Robbery, The Incident, and (our favorite) Shag-O-Rama.The Linguini Incident was the directorial debut of Richard Shepard, the man who would finally get out of “movie jail” when he made 2004’s Matador (starring Pierce Brosnan), then went on to make The Hunting Party (starring Richard Gere), Dom Hemingway (starring Jude Law), and The Perfection (starring Allison Williams). It was a low budget film by a first time director that somehow snagged the INSANE cast of:David BowieRosanna ArquetteEzster BalintMarlee Matlin (already an Oscar-winner!)Buck HenryAndre GregoryThe final edit was taken away from the director, different cuts were released in different countries, and it’s main theatrical release was in Los Angeles in 1992…during the LA riots.
