From natural hair to a new kind of ‘welth’

In this episode of the Wanted Podcast, after a bit of a hiatus, we bring back Wanted Beauty, with a conversation between our beauty contributor Mathahle Stofile and Taryn Gill, a beauty and wellness entrepreneur. Gill is the founder of the natural haircare brand The Perfect Hair. Launched a decade ago, the brand has built a loyal following among women of colour who choose to wear their natural kinks, curls and waves proudly and is available in over 600 stores. In this conversation she talks about scale, natural hair fatigue, partnerships, survival and her latest pivot into the world of well-being. In the Spotlight: FNB Art Prize winner Thato Toeba

In this episode, as we enter September, the traditional arts & culture month in Johannesburg, we bring you an art conversation. Recently, the recipient of the 2025 FNB Art Prize was announced. The prestigious annual prize – which comes with a hundred thousand rands, exhibition space at FNB Art Joburg and a solo show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery – has been awarded to Thato Toeba, a Lesotho national just five years into their art career. Toeba’s interest in the social sciences, identity, power, justice, history, and share of voice, informs their mixed media photomontage and assemblage. In selecting Toeba as this year’s recipient, the jury recognised their work as exuding a quiet force, deployed with clarity and rich materiality, which demonstrated as much commitment to process as to meaning. In our recent conversation, we spoke about how they came from being a practising lawyer, studying towards a PHD, to bagging one of the continent’s most desirable art prize. We spoke about the Lesotho of their formative years; corruption; how they developed their practice from a photography habit and an organic childhood flair for collage and what is still to come from an extraordinary talent. Enjoy. Remember to like, subscribe, share, and talk about the podcast, so our work can reach as many of you as possible. You can find us on Iono, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Our editor Siphiwe Mpye speaks to Wanted Food columnist, Steve Steinfeld. Steinfeld, or The Joburg Foodie, as many will know him, writes our ‘Hot Seat’ column, reviewing the very best restaurants in South Africa and the world. In our July Issue, Steinfeld wrote about a pilgrimage to Modena, Italy, to interview Canadian Chef Jessica Rosval. Later in the chat, he explores trends in the South African culinary scene – from the slowdown in new restaurant openings at the beginning of the year and social initiatives by local chefs; to the increasing Africanisation of menus and what we can expect from him in the next while.

'Of art, war and freedom' a conversation with Athi Patra Ruga

On the eve of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, we caught up with the artist Athi Patra Ruga. Ruga's practice is a medium agnostic exploration of the Rainbow Nation myth, an interrogation of the democratic project's unity fantasies and an empahtic rebuke of the "post-apartheid utopia". In the last few months, his work has been exhibited in Chicago and Zurich and he recently collaborated with the Zetz MOCAA for their annual gala (his work also forms part of the museum's current showcase of its permanent collection titled SALA). We spoke about collecting, mentorship, mastery, decamping from Metrpoli and the artist's lived experience in a time of war.
