Episode 353 | Do You Have What It Takes to Scale Your Law Firm to 7-Figures? The Truth is in Your Identity
There's a question almost nobody says out loud, though I hear it underneath a great many conversations. Do I have what it takes to scale my firm to seven figures? This episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast is not a checklist of skills. It has nothing to do with whether you can build a marketing funnel or read a profit and loss statement. Those matter, and we cover them here and in our programs. Today I want to get at the thing sitting underneath all of it, because it is not about what you are or are not doing. It is about who you are or are not being.Long before law school, most of us were trained to earn approval through personal effort. Being the one who handles it. Being reliable, capable, endlessly available. That training served you beautifully as a student, as an associate, and in the early years of your own firm, when your personal effort was the engine. It becomes the obstacle the moment you try to scale, because scaling requires you to stop being the one who personally handles everything. So the shift I want to talk about is from attorney/operator to investor/owner. An attorney/operator asks how she can personally handle this file well. An investor/owner asks how she can build a firm where this kind of file gets handled well no matter who touches it. Both questions come from caring about quality. Only one of them builds something that lasts.I tell you about Mary, a composite of several clients I've worked with. Family law, eleven years in, close to $600,000 a year, and a reputation as one of the most capable attorneys in her jurisdiction. She had tried to scale. Two associates in five years, neither of whom lasted. A new intake process. A case management system. Revenue moved a little and the ceiling did not move at all. She was spending her days grading papers instead of building the firm.I asked her one question that surprised her, and her answer told me everything. It wasn't about her marketing or her staffing. We get into the four internal shifts this transition requires, the one most women are avoiding without realizing it, and the red flags worth noticing in your own firm this week. One of them is simply what happens in your body when a team member does something differently than you would have. There's a cost to skipping all this, and it shows up in a number. A firm capped by one person's capacity tends to top out somewhere between $400,000 and $800,000, and that has nothing to do with market demand. The most I have ever seen a true solo earn on her own was around $800,000, and she was too buried to hire the help that would have freed her.Comfortable is the enemy of exceptional. The attorneys who scale to seven figures are not the ones with the most impressive credentials or the most punishing work ethic. Nearly everyone listening already has both in abundance. They are the ones willing to let go of an identity that served them well earlier and does not serve them now. Episode 352 | Your Next Great Associate Hire Isn't Applying — Here's How to Find Her Anyway
You posted the job. You watched the applications trickle in. Then you opened your inbox and felt your stomach sink at what had shown up.Your next great hire is not applying to your job posting. She isn't scrolling the job boards at all. She's busy doing excellent work somewhere else; she's respected where she is, and she isn't unhappy enough to go looking. The only way you get her is if the right opportunity finds her.In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I explain why the job board is the wrong pond. There are two kinds of candidates swimming in it, and I'll describe both of them so you'll recognize the resumes in your inbox immediately. Your ideal associate is in neither group. What works instead is a recruiting network, and the key to understanding it is that it isn't a project you complete the week you decide to hire. It's infrastructure. The firms that never scramble to fill an attorney seat didn't get lucky. They built the pipeline months or years before they needed it, and they kept building it during the stretches when they weren't hiring at all.I walk you through the three places to build one. Inside the profession, through your bar association, the law school in your region, and the attorneys you've already faced across a hard-fought case. Inside your own firm, through your team's networks and the people who worked for you and left on good terms. And through the presence you keep online in the months when you have nothing to advertise. Some specifics you can act on this week. Why a $200 referral bonus moves nobody and what number does. Why the associate who left for a clerkship two years ago belongs on a list you keep. And why the post that fills your pipeline is a photo from your team lunch rather than a job listing. Then I put two firm owners side by side. One of them is out in her community constantly, in person and online, because she enjoys it. When she needs an associate, she makes a few calls. The other is so buried in the caseload that she needed help yesterday, and she's scrolling at midnight without engaging, so nobody knows she's there. You'll know which one you are before I finish describing them.Unemployment in the legal field is running around one percent right now. Waiting is getting expensive. The best time to start building your network was probably years ago. The second best time is now.Go here to listen: LINKS TO LOVE:Want to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? We'd so appreciate it, and it helps more women law firm owners find the show. Episode 351 | 12 Gold Nuggets from Our Most Popular Episodes in the Last 12 Months
We've been making the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast for more than seven years now. A lot of good material gets said once around here and then rolls off into the archive, so I went back and pulled the 12 most downloaded episodes of the last 12 months and took one takeaway out of each. Then I counted them down. Here's some of what made the list. The sentence I said to a personal injury owner whose firm was doing high seven figures and who still could not leave for a week. If everything falls apart when you step away, you don't own a business. You own a very demanding, very stressful job. There's $84 trillion moving between generations in this country right now, and by 2030 women are expected to control as much as $30 trillion of it. Those women are going to need an estate planning attorney, a business attorney, a family law attorney. Whether they can find you is a different question. Most firms automate the calendar and the intake form and stop there, which is the easy part. Picture a firm converting 5 percent of its website visitors, which is normal. Add follow-up that happens whether or not anyone in your office remembers to do it and that number can reach 18 percent. Same traffic, same website, 3.6 times the clients. When we sit down with a new client and look at her fee structure, we routinely find she's undercharging by 30 to 50 percent. The fee usually got set years ago by a version of her with less experience and less confidence, and nobody has revisited it since. One client was upset about the $9,000 she'd spent on Google Ads over six months. That $9,000 brought her one client. That client paid her firm $40,000. She couldn't see the $31,000 return because she was staring at the expense line. And my personal favorite of the 12: email is other people's agenda for your life. There are six more, including the one about choosing your uncomfortable, and the reason burnout has less to do with how many hours you work than which hours you're spending on the wrong things.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVEWant to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? Episode 350 | What Legal Recruiters Tell Us About How Small Firms Are Attracting Associates Without Big Law Salaries
Get a few women law firm owners in a room, and the conversation turns to hiring, and then somebody asks the question that sits on every small firm owner's mind. How am I supposed to compete with the bigger firms when it's time to hire an associate? Most of us decided we lost that contest before it started. In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I dug into what legal recruiters are telling us right now, in 2026, about how solo and small firms are landing good associate attorneys. Some of what they said may surprise you.Start with the market. Unemployment for attorneys has been sitting around 1.5%, so recruiters aren't sorting through a stack of desperate applicants. They're competing to reach people who already have a job and think it's fine. That changes what your offer has to do. And remember that if Big Law is only hiring the top one percent out of the top-tier schools, that leaves 99 percent of us.I walk through the five things recruiters say are pulling strong candidates toward smaller firms. You already have access to most of them. You may never have told a candidate about a single one.We also cover the one-page exercise recruiters want you to do before you write a word of a job posting, three interview questions worth stealing for your next conversation, and why the speed of your hiring process is part of your pitch whether you meant it to be or not. Then there's Renee, who ran a family law practice doing $650,000 a year and spent two years telling herself she couldn't afford an associate. The woman she hired had a higher offer on the table from a larger firm and took Renee's anyway. A year later, that associate was running the firm's entire custody caseload on her own, revenue was up almost 30 percent, and Renee took a full week of vacation without her phone. You are not losing a compensation war. You were never in one.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:Want to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? We'd so appreciate it, and it helps more women law firm owners find the show. Episode 349 | Your Mission for the Remainder of 2026: Expanding Your Firm’s Capacity for Wealth and Freedom
There is a document somewhere in your firm that lists what everyone earns. Your paralegal is on it. Your associate is on it. The bookkeeper who comes in on Thursdays is on it. And near the bottom, or more likely nowhere at all, is you. What you take home isn't a number you set. It's whatever is left over after everyone else has been made whole. You've probably told yourself the arrangement is temporary. It was temporary in year two. It was temporary in year five.In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I take on owner compensation, which is the least discussed number in law firm ownership and the one that sets the ceiling on everything above it. I've been listening to the business podcasts this quarter, and two of them ran full episodes on how to compensate a law firm team. Both were useful. Neither one asked the question that comes first. So we're doing this in the right order. What you pay yourself, and then what you pay everyone else.I walk you through the four doors money reaches an owner through, and only one of them shows up on a pay stub. Then I'm going to ask you to add up all four for last year and divide by every hour you worked, including the Sunday evenings and the phone calls on the drive home. I've run that exercise with owners of firms doing well over a million dollars in revenue who found out they were the lowest paid professional in the building. We also get into why this is a growth problem rather than a self-care problem. An underpaid owner prices poorly, because her own compensation is the loudest evidence she has about what her time is worth. She builds a bonus plan for her team that only survives as long as she's willing to absorb the difference herself. And she builds a firm nobody could buy, because any competent purchaser will find the subsidy in an afternoon. Then I show you how to set your own number with math instead of waiting for permission from your profit and loss statement. There's homework at the end. Three steps and one date on the calendar. You are not the last line item. You are the reason there is a line at all. Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVEHave you left us a review on Apple Podcasts yet? Women lawyers tell me all the time that they've been following me for years, so if you're one of them, please subscribe and leave a review. I would so appreciate it. Episode 348 | Why Focus on Your Firm’s Reputation Is Your Best Strategy in the Face of an AI Takeover
It's 11 at night, and a woman is sitting at her kitchen table with her laptop open. Her mother died six weeks ago. There's a house, there's a brother with opinions, and she's been meaning to call a lawyer for about a month. Instead she types the whole mess into a chat window. The answer she gets back is decent. Organized. It doesn't ask her for a retainer or make her feel foolish. She closes the laptop and sleeps better than she has in weeks. That woman was going to call you on Monday. In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I get into what that actually means for your firm. I'll say up front that I'm not an AI expert, and I'm not going to hand you a tool list. Honestly, I think anyone claiming to be an AI expert for the legal industry right now knows only a little more than you do. What I do know is what makes a law firm valuable, and I've watched plenty of firms get hit by new technology before. We talk about the physical limits on AI that almost nobody in the legal world is discussing. Electricity. Water. Price, and why the tool you're paying 20 dollars a month for isn't going to stay 20 dollars a month. There's also a public database of court cases involving citations that AI simply made up. It's past 1,800 now, and in more than 700 of them the person who filed the bad material was a lawyer. Then I take on the answer most lawyers land on, which is to get better at prompting than their clients are. Prompting is a real skill. It isn't a strategy. Anything you can learn about operating a tool, your competitor can learn by Friday. So here's the question I think matters instead. When legal information gets cheap and instant, what's left that's still hard to get? I have three answers, and all three of them already belong to you. I also give you the three things I'd build over the next 12 months, and the two things I would never, ever hand to a machine.Every competitor you have is announcing their technology initiatives right now. There is enormous room to be the firm that announces its humanity.Go Here to Listen:LINKS TO LOVEWant to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? We'd so appreciate it. Episode 347 | The Authority Era: Why AI Is Changing Legal Marketing Forever
For more than twenty years, legal marketing has revolved around one question: Where do I rank? But something fundamental has shifted. Your future clients are no longer typing keywords into a search box and choosing from ten blue links. They're opening ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI — and simply asking who they should hire. And here's the uncomfortable truth at the heart of this episode: your firm can have a beautiful website, strong rankings, and thousands of dollars in monthly marketing spend — and still be completely invisible the moment someone asks AI for a recommendation. In this eye-opening takeover episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Davina hands the mic to Marilyn Jenkins — founder of Law Marketing Zone and a digital strategist who has worked exclusively with law firms since 2018. Marilyn has spent the last year studying exactly how AI decides which firms to recommend, running visibility audits for firms across the country, and testing what actually earns a firm a seat at the table in this new era. What she's discovered should get every law firm owner's attention. In this episode, Marilyn explores:Why AI is not just another search engine — and the critical distinction that explains why so many good firms are struggling to be foundThe one phrase that captures everything about this shift — and why it changes how you should look at your website starting todayWhy some of the most successful, established firms in their markets aren't being mentioned by AI even once — and what those firms are missingThe difference between publishing content and building authority — and why one compounds while the other quietly expiresThe concept that Marilyn believes is the single most misunderstood idea in legal marketing right now — and why getting it right can transform your entire marketing ecosystemWhat happened to one firm's website traffic and AI visibility just weeks after implementing this approach (the numbers are worth hearing)Why the future may belong not to the firms with the biggest budgets — but to the firms willing to become the best teacher in their marketThe bigger idea: This isn't about chasing another algorithm or learning another marketing hack. Algorithms change. Authority compounds. And the firms that commit to becoming the most trusted resource in their market won't just earn better rankings — they'll become the firms that both Google and AI recommend for years to come.Whether you're building a firm you intend to run for decades or one you hope to sell someday, this conversation reframes your website, your content, and your marketing as something far more valuable than you may have realized: an asset that keeps working long after you've built it.You will not look at your website the same way again.A free resource for listeners:Marilyn has created a practical checklist called "Five Things I Do For My Clients To Improve AI Visibility in Google AI and ChatGPT" — based on the real audits her team performs for law firms across the country. Episode 346 | The Send Test: What's Actually Working on Social Media for Law Firms in 2026
You're posting. You're showing up. You're doing what everyone says you're supposed to do on social media. And yet — the consultations aren't coming in the way you hoped. The content feels generic even to you. And somewhere in the back of your mind, you're wondering if any of this is actually working. If that sounds familiar, this episode is going to be a game-changer for you.In this special takeover episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Davina hands the mic to Ania Bretska — founder of Ask Anya Media, Davina's own social media manager and strategist for over four years, and a woman who holds both a JD and a deep expertise in what actually moves the needle for law firms online. This is Ania's fourth takeover of this podcast. And every single time she shows up, she brings the kind of practical, no-fluff insight that makes you want to open your content calendar and start making changes immediately.Today is no different. In this episode, Ania covers:The Send Test — the single question you should ask before posting anything, and why it's the most important filter for your content in 2026The three-part formula that helps your content pass the Send Test — and actually earn someone's attention in a crowded feedWhy cringe doesn't come from being on camera — and the simple video structure that works for lawyers who are not influencers and don't want to beThe exact hook structure that stops the scroll in the first two seconds (and why "Hey guys!" is costing you views)A 2026 platform-by-platform breakdown: where women law firm owners should be showing up, what's working on each platform right now, and what you can safely stop worrying aboutWhy your Google Business Profile is one of the highest-intent touchpoints you have — and what happens to your consultations when you leave it neglectedHow remote law firms can still leverage Google Business Profile even without a physical office location. The bottom line: It's not about posting more. It's not about the algorithm. It's about whether your content is worth someone's attention for three extra seconds — and whether it's specific, real, and human enough that someone would actually send it to a friend. Once you have that filter, everything about your social media strategy gets clearer.Ania brings a rare perspective to this conversation — she thinks like a lawyer and markets like a strategist. And the result is advice that is actually built for the way attorneys think, speak, and serve their clients. Ready to build a law firm that attracts the right clients — online and off?A strong social media presence is one piece of a complete client attraction system. But it works best when it's connected to a firm with the strategy, systems, and team to convert that attention into revenue. If you're ready to have a real conversation about building a law firm that generates consistent, predictable income — and the life that goes with it — book a complimentary call with Davina and the Wealthy Woman Lawyer team.Go to wealthywomanlawyer.com, click the Apply Now button in the top right corner, complete a brief application, and schedule your Zoom call. Episode 345 | Why Your Best Revenue Year Left You Broke: The Cash Flow Truth No One Tells You
Have you ever walked out of a meeting with your accountant the one where they told you what a fantastic year you had and quietly thought, "Then why doesn't my bank account agree?"If so, you are not alone. And you are not bad at business. You are simply missing a piece of the financial picture that almost no one explains clearly to law firm owners. In this special episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Davina hands the mic to Ryan Kimler, founder of Net Profit CFO and CFO Coach for Wealthy Woman Lawyer, for a conversation that could completely change how you understand the money moving through your firm.Ryan breaks down one of the most common and most expensive points of confusion for law firm owners: the gap between net profit and net cash flow. Because these are not the same number. And until you understand why, you will always be left wondering where the money went.In this episode, Ryan walks you through:Why your accountant can tell you it was a great year while your bank account tells a completely different storyThe difference between net profit and net cash flow and why that gap matters more than most owners realizeThe real reason taxes hit harder than expected (and why paying them out of your business account doesn't work the way you think)How accounts receivable quietly reduces the cash you actually have even when your revenue looks strongWhy major asset purchases like buildings, furniture, and equipment don't show up as expenses the way you'd expectHow principal debt payments drain your cash after profits and why debt is harder to pay back than it looks on paperThe truth about owner distributions and how they factor into your firm's real cash positionHow to calculate your firm's true net cash flow and what that number is actually telling you about the health of your businessThe bottom line: A million dollars in profit does not mean a million dollars in the bank. Between taxes, unpaid invoices, asset purchases, debt repayment, and owner distributions, there are a lot of stops between your profit line and your bank balance. Once you understand those stops and plan for them, you stop being surprised. You start being strategic. This is the financial clarity that separates law firm owners who feel in control of their money from those who are always wondering where it went.Go here to listen:A special offer for Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast listeners:Ryan is offering a complimentary three-year financial assessment covering profitability, cash flow, break-even analysis, and growth exclusively for listeners of this podcast. Episode 344: Burnout Recovery Without Leaving Your Law Firm
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® podcast, I talk about burnout the way the legal world won't: not as a personal failing you can discipline your way out of, and not as a sign it's time to sell, go in-house, or quit law for good. There is a third path almost no one talks about. You can recover from burnout without leaving the firm you worked so hard to build.I share my own story of doing anxious math at 3 in the morning, the two scripts the legal world hands a burned-out woman (push through, or get out), and why both are wrong. We name what burnout actually is, the five structural causes hiding underneath your exhaustion, and what real recovery looks like when it doesn't require you to walk away.If you are exhausted but you don't want to give up everything you've built, this one is for you. Your firm was never the enemy. The way it's structured is, and structure can be redesigned.Go here to listen: LINKS TO LOVE:Want to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? Episode 343 | What’s Your Firm Actually Worth? The Exit Conversation Most Women Law Firm Owners Avoid
Picture yourself five years from now. Not sick, not in crisis — just ready. Ready to stop practicing law and do something else with your days. Could you? And if you wanted to hand someone the keys to your firm and walk away with a large cash payout, could you do that? For most women law firm owners, the honest answer is no. The firm isn't an asset you can sell. It's a high-stress, well-paying job you've created for yourself — and the day you leave is the day the value vanishes. In this episode, we have the conversation almost no one is having: what is your firm actually worth? Not what it earns — what it's worth. Because those are two completely different numbers, and the distance between them is the difference between walking away with a life-changing sum and walking away with a final paycheck.I tell you the story of a woman I call Ivy — a brilliant solo who built a thriving practice over three decades and then, in her mid-sixties with a lake house waiting and grandchildren to be present for, discovered the hard truth: the firm was worth almost nothing without her. Her clients came for Ivy. Her systems lived in Ivy's head. There was no one groomed to take over. She spent her last working years scrambling to build in three years what should have been built over fifteen. Ivy isn't unusual. She's the rule, not the exception — and she's the reason I want to have this conversation with you now, while you still have time to make different choices. In this episode, we get into:Why a firm that makes good money and a firm that's worth good money are two entirely different things — and the one question every buyer is really askingThe five factors that actually drive a law firm's value: revenue that doesn't depend on you, predictable recurring revenue, documented systems, a team that can run without you, and clean financialsThe math of a sellable firm — how two firms with identical revenue and identical take-home pay can be worth $1–3 million apart, decided entirely by choices made years in advanceWhy this matters even if you never plan to sell — whether you want to pass the firm to your children, bring in a partner, or simply wind it down one dayThe single question to ask yourself this week that reveals exactly where your firm standsHere's the reframe at the heart of it all: the very steps that make your firm sellable are the same steps that make it calmer to run, easier to staff, and more profitable while you own it. Episode 342: Wealth Anxiety: Why $500K in Revenue Hasn’t Made You Feel Safer
It's Sunday night. The kids are finally asleep, the house is quiet, and you created half a million dollars in revenue last year — the most your firm has ever produced. By every external measure, you have arrived. And yet here you are at eleven o'clock, lying awake, doing the same anxious arithmetic you were doing when the firm was a third this size. What if next month is slow? What if that big client leaves? What if it all goes away? You hit the number. The number was supposed to make you feel safe. And it didn't.In this episode, I name something I almost never hear said out loud in the legal business world: wealth anxiety. The persistent feeling that no matter how much your revenue grows, you are still one bad month away from collapse. I've lived it myself — there were years when no matter how successful I was on the outside, I was still constantly worried about money on the inside. One day I had to ask myself how much would ever be enough to make the worry stop. That's when it dawned on me that I didn't have a money problem. I had a money anxiety problem. Here's the truth most of us miss as we climb toward high six and seven figures: security in a business doesn't come from the top-line number. It comes from your firm's foundation and infrastructure. The reason you don't feel safe may not be that you haven't made enough — it may be that you haven't yet built the structure that turns money into actual financial security. In this episode, we get into:The four reasons you can have a great year financially and still feel uneasy — from being the bottleneck your whole firm runs through, to having no cushion, to measuring the wrong number, to quietly carrying the financial weight for everyone who depends on youWhat that fear is actually costing you — how it makes you undercharge, over-accept the wrong clients, hoard the work, and tax your sleep and your presence at homeThe structural moves that build real safety: a cash buffer of three to six months' operating expenses, a marketing system that doesn't depend on the kindness of others, and a team that expands your firm's wealth capacity beyond your own two handsThe inner work that has to happen alongside the structure: separating your worth from your numbers, attaching real dollar figures to the life you actually want, and learning to feel safe before everything is perfectThis is not a "just think positive about money" episode. It's an honest conversation about why the goalpost keeps sliding forward — why $500K becomes $750K becomes a million and the exhale never comes — and what you can put in place so a slow month becomes just July or December instead of an emergency.By the end, you'll understand that the feeling of safety isn't something you earn by hitting a bigger number. It's something you cultivate within yourself and inside your firm.If you've been busy, productive, successful by every external standard, and still quietly lying awake doing the math, this episode is for you.Go here to listen:———LINKS TO LOVEReady to build the structure that turns revenue into real security? Episode 341 | Saying ‘No’: The Business Case for Firing Your Worst Clients
There is a small group of clients in your firm right now who are quietly making you poor — and you can probably already name them. They are not necessarily your lowest-paying clients. Some of them may be paying you premium fees. But somewhere in your gut, you already know who they are: the names on the caller ID that make your stomach tighten, the Saturday-night emails about non-emergencies, the matters that drag on twice as long as they should. In this episode, I introduce you to The Bottom 20 — the cluster of clients in every law firm that quietly consume the lion's share of your team's hours, your weekends, and your bandwidth, while producing a sliver of your revenue. Most legal-industry advice treats client selection as a marketing problem. It isn't. It's a profit lever, and it's the single fastest way to take back your week without losing a dollar.I'll walk you through the real numbers from a composite client we'll call Marisol — and what she saw on the page when we sorted her client list. (Spoiler: she cried. And then she rebuilt her firm.) I'll also share a moment from my own early years as a law firm owner that I should have acted on three years sooner than I did.By the end of our time together, you'll have:• A one-page audit you can complete this week with a pen, a printed client list, and forty-five minutes• A way to spot the pattern hiding in your Bottom 20 — the practice area, referral source, or matter type you may need to stop saying yes to• Three margin-of-the-page questions that have the power to dramatically transform your practice• A reframe for the voice in your head that says, "But what if I can't replace the revenue?" This is not a "fire all your difficult clients tomorrow" episode. It is an honest, math-first conversation about why your best clients are paying for the existence of your worst ones — and what to do about it before you lose another quarter of your year to the wrong people. If you have been busy, productive, doing well by every external standard, and still vaguely going under, this episode names exactly what you're feeling.Go here to listen: LINKS TO LOVE:Ready to take your law firm to the next level? Episode 340 |Comfortable but Not Free: The Solo Practitioner’s Path to a Firm That Generates Wealth Even in Your Absence
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Attorney Davina Frederick speaks directly to the solo practitioner who has worked hard, built a respected practice, and arrived at a place that feels stable—but not quite free. You answer every call. You handle every consultation. You are the first one in and the last one out. You take home a comfortable draw, and on most days, you tell yourself that’s enough. But somewhere in the back of your mind, the questions are already forming. What happens if you get sick? What does a real vacation look like when you are the only person who can do the work? What happens when you want to slow down and there is nothing there to slow down into?Davina calls it the Comfort Trap—and in this episode, she explains exactly what it is, why it is so easy to mistake for success, and why it becomes more costly with every year you stay in it.The Comfort Trap is not a sign that you did something wrong. In fact, it is often a sign that you did a great many things right. You built a practice from the ground up. You earned a reputation worth protecting. You figured out how to run a business without a manual or a partner. What Davina is asking you to consider is what it costs you to stay there. In this episode, she walks through the math most solo practitioners never run. The real effective hourly rate once you account for every hour you actually work. The market value of a firm that closes when you do. The carrying cost of a lifestyle that tends to grow over time, whether you plan for it or not.She also names the four shifts that separate a solo practice from a firm that generates wealth even in your absence—and lays out what it actually looks like when women law firm owners make those shifts on purpose, with a plan.If you have ever tried to hire an associate and had it go sideways, this episode will speak to that directly. Davina talks about why a failed hire is almost never a sign that you are not cut out to lead a team—and what it is really a sign of instead. The goal of this conversation is not to make you feel behind. It is to help you see what is genuinely possible when you stop building around your own capacity and start building something bigger than yourself.Because the comfort you feel today is not the problem. A plan that keeps you exactly where you are five, ten, and twenty years from now—that is the problem. You did not build this firm to be stuck in it. You built it to own it. And there is a meaningful difference between the two.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:If today’s episode resonated with you, the next step is a conversation. Episode 339 | The Hiring Mistake That Costs Six-Figure Firms a Year of Growth
The Hiring Mistake That Costs Six-Figure Firms a Year of GrowthIn this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Attorney Davina Frederick names the single decision that quietly sets more six-figure law firms back by a full year than any marketing miss, pricing mistake, or strategy gap ever could. It is Sunday night. You are running the mental tape of the week ahead. And somewhere in that tape, you land on her—the hire you brought on six months ago. The one you were so relieved to bring on because you were drowning.Six months later, you are still answering questions that should have been answered in her first week. You are redoing her work. You are telling yourself you just need to train her better—though you both know there is no time for that. Here is what almost no law firm owner ever realizes about that moment six months back:You were not making a hiring decision. You were making a rescue decision. And those two things produce completely different results—with completely different price tags. Most law firm owners believe they have a team problem. They have cycled through staff. Hired and re-hired the same role. Promoted someone who was not ready. Brought in someone who interviewed beautifully and struggled from day one. And concluded that good people are just hard to find.Davina has come to a different conclusion. And in this episode, she names exactly what is really going on, why it costs six-figure firms a full year of growth on a single hire, and the three reactive hiring patterns she sees again and again across firms, practice areas, and markets. Each of these patterns feels reasonable in the moment. Each one has its own internal logic that makes it seem like a smart move. And each one quietly installs a ceiling your firm cannot grow past—no matter how hard you work.If you have ever wondered why your team keeps growing while your firm doesn’t, this is the conversation that will likely answer it.Davina also walks through what it looks like to hire like a CEO instead of an overwhelmed lawyer—and what changes when you stop solving for this week and start building for the firm you actually want to be running 12 months from now.Because the team you bring on in the next 90 days is the firm you will be running by this time next year. The question is whether you are choosing it… or surviving it.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:Ready to stop hiring from a place of overwhelm and start building a team that scales with you? Episode 338 | Inside Wealthy Woman Lawyer: A Tale of Two Women Law Firm Owners
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Attorney Davina Frederick shares two stories that reveal something many women law firm owners quietly wrestle with behind the scenes—but rarely say out loud. On the surface, both women looked successful. One had spent nearly two decades building a respected solo practice in a small town, earning strong revenue and becoming the attorney everyone trusted. The other was a single mother managing high-conflict litigation cases while trying to hold together the demands of motherhood and business ownership. Different stages. Different lives. Different fears. But both had reached the same painful realization: What they had built was no longer sustainable. Davina takes listeners inside the emotional side of law firm growth—the part most business conversations skip over entirely. The fear of hiring. The fear of letting go. The fear of financial risk. The fear that the success you worked so hard to create may actually be costing you more than you realized. And perhaps most importantly, she explores the question so many women lawyers avoid asking themselves: “What is your law firm costing you?” Not financially. But physically. Emotionally. Relationally. In this deeply personal and honest conversation, Davina shares how both women confronted the hidden fears keeping them stuck—and what happened when they finally chose to grow differently. One woman faced a health crisis that forced her to rethink everything. The other had to overcome the fear that investing in help would financially ruin her. Both eventually discovered that staying where they were carried its own kind of risk. This episode is not about hustle culture, grinding harder, or scaling faster. It’s about recognizing when the way you’ve been operating is no longer serving the life you actually want. It’s about building a law firm that supports your health, your family, your freedom, and your future—not one that consumes all of it. And it’s about understanding that the women who successfully scale their firms are rarely the women who do it alone. If you’ve ever felt successful on paper but exhausted behind the scenes…If you’ve ever known what you needed to do but felt frozen by fear…If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s another way to grow without sacrificing yourself in the process… This conversation will meet you exactly where you are. Because the path forward may feel uncomfortable—but it is absolutely possible. Episode 337 | The Practice You Built vs. The Business You Want
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Attorney Davina Frederick draws a line most law firm owners have never had drawn for them—and once you see it, the way you look at your firm changes.Have you ever felt that even though you have your own firm—maybe even with other people working alongside you—you’re still doing too much lawyer work and not nearly enough “running the business” work?If so, you’re not alone. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of small law firm owners are caught in the same trap. And most of them don’t realize they’re in it.Davina names the distinction that changes everything: the difference between a law practice and a law firm business. They can look identical from the outside. They are worlds apart from the inside. One pays you while you work. The other pays you whether you’re working or not.One ends when you do. The other becomes a legacy. One is a job in expensive clothing. The other is real wealth. In this conversation, Davina walks you through how to tell, honestly, which one you’ve actually built—and why so many talented, hardworking women lawyers wake up years into their firms only to realize the ceiling they keep hitting is a ceiling they accidentally designed. She shares the stories of three real women—Anabelle, Jane, and Maria—whose experiences will likely feel uncomfortably familiar. One of them was getting up at 3 a.m. to keep up. One of them couldn’t say the word “no.” And one of them did the inner and outer work to transform her practice into a thriving, wealth-generating business—and her life along with it.This isn’t about working harder, hiring faster, or grinding longer. It’s about a fundamental reorientation—one most women lawyers were never taught, never shown, and never given permission to make.If something inside you has been whispering, “I’m ready for what’s next,” this episode is the conversation that meets you there. The choice between practice and business is already being made every day inside your firm. The only question is whether you’re making it consciously… or by default.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:Ready to stop perfecting a practice and start building a wealth-generating law firm business? Episode 336 | The Founder Tax: What Your Firm Is Quietly Costing You
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, Attorney Davina Frederick names something nearly every woman law firm owner feels but rarely says out loud. There’s a tax most women law firm owners pay every single month—and it never shows up on a balance sheet.Your CPA can’t find it. Your bookkeeper has never flagged it. There’s no quarterly notice, no payment due date. But it’s real. It’s constant. And if you don’t know what it is, it’s already taking more from you than you can afford.Davina calls it the Founder Tax—and in this conversation, she pulls back the curtain on the hidden cost of being the only one who can run your firm.If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “I’m working harder than ever, but is it really worth it?”—this episode is going to land closer than you expect. This isn’t about working smarter or finding the next productivity hack. It’s about something deeper.Something that may be quietly shaping every decision you make inside your firm—your time, your revenue ceiling, and the future you don’t yet realize you’re trading away.Davina shares the stories of two real women she’s worked with through Wealthy Woman Lawyer—because the Founder Tax doesn’t look the same in every firm. It hides in different corners. And until you spot which corner it’s hiding in for you, you can’t do a thing about it.Once you see it, you won’t be able to unsee it.The real question is… what will you do next?Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:Ready to stop paying the Founder Tax and start building a wealth-generating law firm? Episode 330 | The Maverick's Playbook — Why the Real Answer to the Gender Wealth Gap is Building Your Own Firm
In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, host Davina Frederick delivers a bold, unapologetic challenge to the conventional wisdom around women and the gender wealth gap in law.For decades, the conversation has focused on how women can succeed within the existing system—how to make partner, negotiate better pay, and break through the glass ceiling. But what if the ceiling isn't the problem? What if the table itself is?Davina shares the sobering data: Women make up more than 56% of law school graduates and more than half of law firm associates—yet account for only 20% of equity partners. And those who do make it to equity partnership still earn an average of $66,000 less per year than their male counterparts. This episode makes the powerful case that the most radical, most financially transformative action a woman lawyer can take is not to fight for a seat at someone else's table—it's to build her own. Davina explores why entrepreneurship isn't just a career option for women lawyers; it's the most powerful tool available for closing the gender wealth gap and changing the legal industry from the outside in.Plus, you'll hear real stories of women who made the maverick's choice—who left the traditional path behind and built wealth-generating law firm businesses on their own terms. In this episode of the Wealthy Woman Lawyer® Podcast, host Davina Frederick invites you to think about a question many law firm owners rarely stop to fully consider: What would actually change in your life if your firm reached seven figures in revenue? For many women attorneys, revenue goals are often discussed as business milestones. But this episode explores a deeper perspective—how crossing a major threshold in your firm can transform far more than the numbers on a financial statement.Davina paints a vivid picture of what becomes possible when a law firm grows beyond the stage where the owner carries everything alone. The conversation moves beyond traditional metrics and looks at the broader ripple effects that growth can create in your daily experience, your decision-making, and the way you design your life as a business owner. This episode challenges the idea that financial growth is simply about making more money. Instead, it explores how expanding your firm can open doors to new levels of freedom, confidence, and opportunity—both professionally and personally. If you’ve ever wondered whether aiming higher is really worth it…If you’ve questioned what life could actually look like on the other side of the next level…Or if you’re ready to think bigger about what your law firm can become—this episode will give you a powerful new lens through which to view your future.Tune in to discover why seven figures represents far more than a revenue goal—and how the life behind that number may be closer than you think.Go here to listen:LINKS TO LOVE:Want to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts? ABOUT THIS SHOW
What if you could hang out with successful women lawyers, ask them about growing their firms, managing resources like time, team and systems, mastering money issues, and more; then take an insight or two to help you build a wealth-generating law firm? That’s what we do each week on the Wealthy Woman Lawyer podcast. Hosted by Davina Frederick, founder and CEO of Wealthy Woman Lawyer –– every episode is an in-depth look at how to think like a CEO, attract clients who you love to serve (and will pay you on time), and create a profitable, sustainable firm you love. The goal is to give you the information you need to scale your law firm business from 6 to 7 figures in gross annual revenue so you can fully fund, and still have time to enjoy, the lifestyle of your dreams.
