What might explain the increase in the diagnosis of ADHD over the past 30 years, especially in the last 10 years? Overdiagnosis or Underdiagnosis – is ADHD increasingly diagnosed inaccurately, is it just a “fad” diagnosis? Or is ADHD mis-diagnosed as another condition or missed entirely as the explanation for symptoms a person has, symptoms which reflect difficulty dealing with whatever is happening in that person’s life at that given time? Each of these possibilities has consequences, the more significant impact is upon a person’s life trajectory when the diagnosis of ADHD is missed. We’re continuing the Self-Compassion series with a shift from body to mind. Building on last episode’s compassionate body scan, Eartha introduces a simple but powerful idea: thoughts are not facts. Just because a thought shows up doesn’t mean it’s true. Using the image of the mind as a house and thoughts as visitors — some kind, some noisy — we practice creating space between ourselves and our harshest self-talk. Through the phrase “I am having the thought that…” and a guided “leaves on the stream” visualization, we learn to notice difficult thoughts without letting them take over. We also meet the inner critic for what it often is — a worried protector, not an enemy — and practice offering ourselves the same compassionate reframe we’d offer a good friend. The episode closes with language for children and teens, too, making this a practice families can share together. A mistake is a moment, not a character. A hard day is a hard day, not a whole life. Tina was born missing half of her right foot and the fingers on her right hand due to what is called Amniotic Band Syndrome. Basically, as she was developing, the amniotic sack had a thick band in an area and so it constricted the growth while she was developing… but she turned her disability into the an ability to make others laugh.

The Author Brad A. LaMar when he’s not fighting evil witches and wizards or uncovering the true tales behind some of the most well-known nursery rhymes, is an educator who resides in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area in the US. The Author Abundance N Solomon is a health care support worker from Cambridge in the UK. He was born in Nigeria and moved with his family to the UK at the age of five. The Author Lynn Slaughter is a successful award-winning American author of nine books, ranging from romantic crime, fantasy and young adults.  She lives in Louisville in Kentucky in the USA, where she resides with her husband. Lynn has two grown up sons and five adorable grandchildren. However, she grew up in New York and Connecticut where she graduated from Smith College with a degree in Sociology, to that she added a masters. The Author Col. Charles Cone, USAF(Retired) of Farrington Hills, Michigan has led a life of service having reached a glorious century and not out, on the 5th of January this year. He entered the US Navy on the 22nd of February 1944 and having decided that career path was not for him, he transferred to the Air Force and was soon called up for duty for the Korean War. In 2006 he received the prestigious Master Pilot Award from the FAA for fifty years of accident/incident free flying, though at times some flights came perilously close to denying him that achievement. Col. Cone in addition to the pilot award has numerous military awards to his name including two Legion of Merits, an Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. Besides his military honours Col. Cone achieved a BSc from Ohio State University and a MSc in computer Science from Texas A&M University. Along the way, she shares the lessons, people, and practices that helped her rebuild her life and find hope again. Janet: I found my adult life harder than my childhood. My childhood was lovely. It wasn’t perfect, but I was a happy child. I made mistakes and held on to things, held on to memories, and I got myself into trouble basically. Sam: Janet Dunne grew up in Dublin with a mystery at the center of her life. When she was three years old, her father disappeared. Not in the way you might be thinking. He became an actual missing person. For years, Janet hoped and prayed that he would come home safely, but he never did. What followed was a childhood filled with contradictions. There were difficult moments: struggles in school, anxiety, and grief. But there were also adventures with friends, afternoons spent with her grandmother, family stories, music, art, and laughter. As Janet entered adulthood, the challenges she had carried for years began to intensify. Eventually, she found herself in Ireland’s mental health system searching for answers. What frustrated her most was the lack of explanation. Janet: I live in Ireland and the system in Ireland when you have mental health, they don’t explain the mental health problems to you. So you’re just put on medication and you’re basically in the system that’s in Ireland because I was in the system. I didn’t have private health insurance, so I was going through the normal system that’s there for all the rest of the people.” Sam: Janet wasn’t satisfied with simply being told what medication to take. She wanted to understand what was happening to her and why. When those answers didn’t come, she began looking elsewhere. Janet: Right from the get-go when I came out of hospital, one of my first things to do was to run to a church and pray to God to help me because I was in a very, very weird place that I had never been before. So I was searching outside myself.” Sam: Janet’s search for answers would eventually take her far beyond Ireland. Along the way she encountered therapists, spiritual teachers, self-help authors, and even an Aboriginal healer whose advice would become one of the central lessons of her book. Janet: He explained to me that there was a darkness in my life and that that darkness was attacking me and not letting me have my life the way I want my life to be.  Sam: So she asked if she could pay him for a healing session and his answer surprised her. Janet: He said if I was to take money off you, I would lose the gift that I have. So in my head I just said quick, ask him again, ask him again, but don’t mention no money. And in the next breath then I said to him, can you do a healing for me? And I held back about money, yeah, I said nothing about money. And the healing started instantaneously and I just started crying buckets and buckets of tears.  Sam: That was a powerful experience because she felt like she wasn’t speaking to someone interested in just making money. She was speaking to someone who genuinely believed he could help her. Janet: And so, what he actually told me to do was when that darkness comes to pause, don’t say anything, don’t think anything and don’t do anything. And that will allow that darkness to pass by. But if I think any thoughts or say anything or move a muscle in my body, that the darkness will be able to attach. I know this sounds weird, but I did what you said and it really, really works. Sam: And then she shared her experience with a friend who was also in need of help. Janet: And I also had a friend who was suicidal and I explained that technique to him. And then the next time I asked him, how are you now? He said, it’s gone, it’s over. I explained about the Aborigine to him. So that was it. That was a great breakthrough. Sam:  Just to be clear, these are Janets experiences if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts I would call the 988 — the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.  Janet says another turning point came after a family crisis led her to leave Ireland altogether. Janet: I was 10 years in the system before I actually took sick and landed in a German hospital. And that’s a really funny story because my psychiatrist in Ireland said, the next time there’s a problem in your family, I want you out of the scenario. I don’t want you to be any part of it the next time there would be a drama. And so when a drama happened in my life, I took the plane to Germany and ended up in a German hospital. And that’s, and that was another fantastic breakthrough because their system to deal with the mental illness was completely different to the Irish system. You know, the Irish system is old fashioned. The Germans are modern, forward thinking about mental illness. Sam: Germany didn’t cure Janet’s problems. But it did change the way she thought about them. Her experiences so far led to thinking that recovery might require more than medication. Janet: When I came back from Germany, I said, okay, Janet, you’re going to have to do this yourself now. And I looked up cognitive therapy and I went to cognitive therapy. Then I went to yoga, a yoga retreat for spiritual healing. It was actually a kundalini yoga course and it was absolutely fantastic. Sam: At the Yoga retreat, Janet met a teacher named Satantra who reinforced some of he earlier advice she was given. Janet: And he said that when you think of your thoughts, he said, your thoughts are like your happiness and thoughts coming into your head. You need to be like a tree with loads of branches and you let the thought come in like a breeze going through leaves. And then you just let it pass by. And that was similar to the Aborigine man. Don’t hold on to your thoughts, don’t hold on to feelings. You know, if it’s a bad feeling, let it go. If it’s a good feeling, let it go. Sam: Different methodology but ultimately the same message, don’t fight every thought. Don’t cling to every feeling. Acknowledge your feelings but don’t hold onto them. Just…let it go. Janet: I’m just hoping it helps people. Sam: Throughout her journey, Janet searched for answers in many places. In hospitals. In therapy. In spirituality. In self-help books. In conversations with people who offered unexpected wisdom. But one of the most important discoveries she made was that no one could do the work for her. This book is extremely well written, but as I have already hinted at its contents in places will certainly raise a few eyebrows. I would be interested to hear what the hierarchy in the Vatican would say about this book. So, look for yourself and formulate your own opinions. Is God’s will being shaped to fit man’s needs rather than man shaping himself to meet God’s expectations? Adoption trauma coach, Dr. Melody Aguayo, meets with therapist Bryce Hamilton LSCSW, to discuss raising adopted children. Yep, the one with the bulldog that dominated NYC TaxiTV and USA Daytime in the 20teens. Over nine years, she hosted hundreds of guests, racked up four Emmys, launched countless adventures—and had so much fun. Then she got fired. No fun. After losing her job, she thought she’d never to go back to journalism. With no other marketable skills and no idea what to do next, she entered an epic dark night of the soul. Looking for light, her family moved to the beach in Coney Island. There, Cat got serious about her own sobriety and began bringing recovery meetings to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and men. That work inspired her to found the nonprofit Restorative Housing Organization. RHO is dedicated to training formerly incarcerated men and women to renovate undervalued NYC waterfront properties, which are then rented to Section 8 tenants. She loves it. But once a journalist, always a journalist. So when she weirdly got name-checked on Hacks last season, she took it as a sign.
Soon after, she heard her old friend, musician Steve Earle, talking openly about his sobriety on a radio show —a thing she didn’t know people were even allowed to do. And she realized she wanted to be the one talking to Steve Earle about sobriety on a show! President of the Board of Directors of Coptic Survivor, an organization fighting to end clergy abuse in churches, Melanie Sakoda joins Bryce Hamilton LSCSW to discuss sexual abuse in churches and schools. They talk about the lack of discipline abusers face, common reasons why perpetrators are not held accountable, help outline the profile of typical abusers in these settings, and what we can do about it to keep children safe. Additionally, they discuss warning signs that a child may be targeted or is being abused, best practice for helping children in these situations, and how to handle adults who give warning signs of grooming or inappropriate behavior toward youth. They tackle the age old question, “why is more not being done?” and provide resources and direct action items to make a difference. They had spoken up about the way a local abuse case was mishandled by church officials, leaving their lives forever changed by the backlash. Realizing how important their mutual support was, they wanted to reach out to those who did not have that. The website was active until March, 2020. Melanie affiliated with SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, in 2008. She led SNAP support meetings from 2009 until recently. Melanie continues to lead independent virtual support groups and advocate for survivors, particularly Orthodox victims, and is the President of the Board of Directors of Coptic Survivor.
