Ep 546 $14M Raised, A Car-Changing Exit
Podcast: Built to Sell Radio (LS 50 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: Ep 546 $14M Raised, A Car-Changing ExitPub date: 2026-05-15Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationThere's an old idea in M&A called the Rembrandt in the attic. A company owns something valuable — a brand, a patent, a customer list, a data set — and nobody inside the business sees it for what it is. The right acquirer walks in, looks at the same asset through a different lens, and recognizes a masterpiece. Dori Yona spent six years and raised $14 million building what he thought was a price protection company for consumers. Earny tracked everything its users bought online and automatically clawed back refunds whenever the price dropped within the retailer's protection window. The model never quite worked. After two rounds of layoffs, a shutdown plan presented to the board, and a move out of the Santa Monica office, Dori pivoted to selling the one thing the company had in abundance: SKU-level purchase data on 3.5 million users. That pivot found the acquirer. To a consumer packaged goods (CPG) giant trying to understand what shoppers were actually putting in their carts during COVID, the data was the prize. The consumer app was almost incidental. Many low cost airlines are struggling due to a canny and calculated set of strategies from bigger airlines that we can think of as ‘revenge of the legacy carriers.’ Today on the show, we go back in time to when Spirit was riding high and pressuring the whole industry to cut costs. We talk with then-CEO Ben Baldanza about his radical vision for cheap air travel and then travel to the present day to hear how legacy airlines beat Spirit and other budget airlines at their own game. 10 Years & 40+ Countries: How to Travel Well as a Couple with Gabi and Shanna of 27 Travels
Podcast: Zero To Travel Podcast (LS 58 · TOP 0.5% what is this?)Episode: 10 Years & 40+ Countries: How to Travel Well as a Couple with Gabi and Shanna of 27 TravelsPub date: 2026-04-28Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationWhat does it actually take to travel well with a partner, and what are the hidden layers of that experience when you're also navigating the world as a queer couple? Gabi and Shanna Meit-Sciara are a Brooklyn-based couple and the creators of 27 Travels, a platform launched in 2016 to document their adventures while building more visibility and resources for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Gabi is a photographer and graphic designer; Shanna is a videographer and video editor. Together, they've visited 40+ countries and built a full-time creative business rooted in their relationship and their shared love of the world. In this episode, co-host Dianni Hall sits down with Gabi and Shanna to talk about what it really looks like to build a relationship through travel, how their partnership has been tested and strengthened on the road over ten years, and what the experience of traveling as a queer couple actually involves beyond what most people see. This conversation is for anyone who's ever taken a trip with someone they care about and had to figure each other out in real time. Gabi and Shanna get specific about the roles they've each naturally fallen into, how they handle conflict during work trips without letting it ruin the experience, and the invisible, exhausting decisions queer couples make constantly on the road that most people never think about. If you've been wondering what traveling as a couple actually looks like when applied to a real, long-term relationship, this one goes deep. What's a trip that revealed something unexpected about someone you were traveling with? I'd love to hear your thoughts, and I hope you'll share by sending me an audio message. Co-host Dianni Hall is a queer, second-generation Latina, solo budget backpacker, freelancer, and host of the While She’s Away podcast, where she interviews women on their travel experience and expertise to help women live their best lives exploring the world. In this episode, Rob Walling sits down with Adam Wathan, co-founder of Tailwind CSS, for a candid conversation about the dramatic revenue decline that forced Tailwind Labs to lay off most of their team. Adam shares the hard lessons learned from running a business based on one-time purchases, why he didn't see the slowdown coming, and how an honest podcast episode accidentally turned everything around. Then they switch gears entirely to talk about founder fitness: how Adam lost 70 pounds, his 15-minute weighted vest workouts, and why tracking strength gains can be more motivating than watching the scale. Episode Sponsor: Hiring engineers right now is kinda broken. AI resumes, fake profiles, people who look senior on paper but can't ship anything real. G2i cuts through all of that. They've pre-vetted over 8,000 engineers- not "we glanced at their GitHub" vetted, actually tested with live technical interviews. Contract or full-time- just tell them what you need and within days you're reviewing real candidates. And you get a risk-free trial. If it's not a fit, they'll replace the dev in 24 hours. From the accounting standards that force banks to "charge off" delinquent accounts to the large CSV files that constitute the only proof of a debt's existence, he explores how the system prioritizes accounting finality over legal and factual accuracy. The conversation reveals why the single most effective way to resolve a debt is often forcing a collector to read and write paper. They can’t, operationally, and don’t see that as an impediment to making money, especially because the paper will often document their lies and crimes.–Full transcript available here: https://www.complexsystemspodcast.com/debt-collections/ –Presenting Sponsors: Mercury, Granola & FramerIf you have more interesting hobbies than managing your money, Mercury Personal is built for you. S14E1: Nirav Tolia, Nextdoor CEO, on Building Community Platforms, Product-Market Fit, and the Future of AI in Local Networks

Nirav shares and refelcts the story behind building Nextdoor, one of the world’s largest hyperlocal social platforms, and reflects on the lessons he has learned scaling a product designed around real-world communities. Before founding Nextdoor, Nirav was one of the first 100 employees at Yahoo, where he witnessed the rise of the early consumer internet and the power of network effects. He later co-founded Round Zero, an early startup studio that helped shape his thinking about entrepreneurship and product development. In this conversation, Nirav discusses: • Growing up in Odessa, Texas, as the child of Indian immigrant physicians, and how those experiences shaped his understanding of belonging and community • Why he never planned to become a founder and how failure at Stanford University helped him find his strengths • The early days of Yahoo and how the dot-com era influenced his entrepreneurial path • The founding story behind Nextdoor and the challenge of building a platform designed for neighborhoods rather than global networks • How founders can identify product-market fit, including his framework of building a “painkiller vs. vitamin” product • The responsibility technology companies have when platforms surface bias, trust, and safety challenges • Why Nextdoor prioritizes quality of interactions over pure scale and engagement metrics • How Nirav thinks about the role of artificial intelligence in local communities, and why he believes AI should act as an advisor rather than a driver This episode explores what it really takes to build technology that strengthens communities, and why designing for trust, accountability, and usefulness may define the future of social platforms. Planning a career break to travel the world? If you need some inspiration to make those travel dreams a reality, look no further! We're resharing some of our Transition to Travel episodes this month to help kickstart your plans in 2026. In this series, we interview a guest both before and after their travels (or during if it's long-term), so we can see how it all panned out and how travel has changed them. Lance Wright is a longtime higher education professional and the creator of The Midlife Crisis Traveler, where he shares the story behind taking a major travel leap in midlife. At the time of this episode, he stepped away from his role at Colorado State University to take a seven-month trip, and that experience led him to rethink work, identity, and how he wanted to live. This conversation gets into the real stuff behind long-term travel. Lance shares what it was like to ask for time away from a job he actually loved, how he and his wife navigated his decision to travel solo, and what helped him through the lonely stretches on the road. We also talk about minimalism, masculinity, identity, and the surprising clarity he had when he got home. What chapter in your life might be ready to close so a new one can begin? I'd love to hear your thoughts and hope you’ll share by sending me an audio message. Tune In To Learn: Why Lance finally stopped waiting and committed to a seven-month trip How he negotiated a leave of absence from a job he genuinely enjoyed Advice for talking with your spouse about a solo long-term trip What Albania taught him early on about connection and loneliness How local tours, cooking classes, and Workaway helped him meet people Why travel pushed him toward minimalism and a simpler lifestyle How the trip reshaped his thinking about work, masculinity, and identity What happened when he came home and realized he needed a new chapter Why trusting your own travel style matters more than following someone else’s plan And so much more Resources: Sign up for our FREE newsletter The Midlife Crisis Traveler Tours By Locals Want More? Marriott: Building an Empire Without a Master PlanPub date: 2026-03-10Get Podcast Transcript →powered by Listen411 - fast audio-to-text and summarizationBill Marriott built the largest hotel company in the world. But he didn’t open his first hotel until he was 55 and he fought against it the whole way. In fact, the man that would go on to build the world’s largest hotel chain started with a nine-seat root beer stand in Washington, DC and a simple goal: serve people well and build something that lasts. In this episode of Outliers, we explore how Marriott turned that single stand into huge hotel empire without a master plan. In fact, before hotels, he even made a detour to start the airline catering industry. We break down his obsession with downside risk, how he isolated variables like location, and why his refusal to rely on forces he couldn’t control allowed him to expand during the Great Depression while his competitors folded. ----- Approximate Timestamps: (00:00) Introduction (03:58) Ice Cold Root Beer (10:35) The Hot Shoppe Expansion (12:07) Building the Machine (20:07) The Airport Expansion (24:20) The Marriott Lessons (26:22) The Hotel Empire (30:53) Handing Over the Presidency (35:01) The End of an Era ----- Upgrade: Get a hand edited transcripts and ad free experiences along with my thoughts and reflections at the end of every conversation.
