Content warning: domestic violence, intimate partner violence, rape, strangulation, asphyxia, and murder. Shelley Hamilton is a co-victim of murder and co-author of the nonfiction book, The Forsaken. She has spent years uncovering the truth behind a deeply personal and complex case that forever changed her family and community, the 1978 murders of Shelley's 24-year-old sister, Rhonda Hamilton Wicht, and Rhonda's four-year-old son, Donnie. Shelley's journey in the criminal justice system over the last 48 years has been truly shocking. From mistrial to conviction to a prisoner's pardon, she has never given up her fight for truth. Alongside journalist Alicia Doyle, Shelley's mission in co-authoring The Forsaken is to document the facts and share the emotional truth that drives this story. The Broken Cycle media team is incredibly grateful for both women's time, energy, and advocacy. The following episodes are dedicated in loving memory of Rhonda and Donnie Wicht. 177: Introducing Deep Cover: The Family Man

Deep Cover is a true crime show about double lives, from our friends at PushkinIndustries. Their new season, The Family Man, is a story about how families can deceive each other and the lengths we’ll go to to protect our loved ones. Elise and Marissa grew up in a seemingly normal house in the suburbs of St. Louis, but it was a house built on secrets. There were things their father never told them—like how he really made his money. One night, the police showed up, raided their house, and seized boxes of evidence. Hours later, the sisters turned on the TV and saw something surreal: their father in the middle of a police chase. The local news identified him as “The Boonie Hat Bandit”. The girls were stunned. They struggled to accept the truth: Dad had been living a double life. How long had he been lying to them? What had he done? And who, exactly, was their father? Find Deep Cover: The Family Man wherever you get podcasts. If you want to know how the story ends right now, binge the full season by signing up for a Pushkin+ subscriptions on the Deep Cover show page on Apple Podcasts or at pushkin.fm/plus.

In years prior, Brooke had been surviving and attempting to escape a violent relationship, and Jen was doing her best to be Brooke’s support person. However, it was after the tragic loss of Brooke, that Jen was left with a gaping hole in her heart, and a mission on her mind. She now offers support to domestic violence resources by way of her company, and she continues to share Brooke’s memory with the world in order to make change. She also works hard to bring awareness to the deep impact that being a co-victim of abuse can have on a loved one’s trajectory. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful for Jen’s strength, perspective, and mission. 149: [Marlee Liss] Meaningful Justice

Content Warning: rape, self-harm, and suicidal ideation.Marlee Liss is a survivor,award-winning speaker, victim advocate, somatic educator, and author from Toronto, Canada. She grew up in the arts, but pivoted to social work when she began her college career. It was in Marlee’s junior year when her life changed forever; she became the victim of a sexual assault and entered an arduous journey in the criminal justice system as a result. However, three years into that battle for justice, Marlee found an additional path: restorative justice. According to Walden University, quote “Punitive justice is the idea of punishing criminals for their crimes against society or the legal system itself, and is the traditional method of handling crime in the United States. Restorative justice seeks to bring victims of crimes into the justice process. Criminals are asked to take accountability for their wrongdoing by facing those they have wronged... The theory is that criminals owe more than a debt to society—they owe a debt to specific people,” end quote. The two processes are not always mutually exclusive. It’s important to note that criminal justice can occur tandemly with restorative justice practices. The Broken Cycle Media team is so very grateful for Marlee's powerful perspective advocacy and time and energy in sharing in this episode.Resources:Survivors for Justice Reform:https://www.survivors4justicereform.com/Dr. Alissa Ackerman:https://www.alissaackerman.com/Marlee's Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/marleeliss/Marlee's TikTok:https://www.tiktok.com/@marleelissSurvivors for Justice Reform on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/survivors4justicereform/National Association of Community and Restorative Justice:https://www.nacrj.org/NACRJ Restorative Justice Map:https://members.nacrj.org/rj-map/FindStartsWith?term=%23%21Sources:Statistics: The Criminal Justice System - Rainn, rainn.org/facts-statistics-the-scope-of-the-problem/statistics-the-criminal-justice-system/“What Is Restorative Justice?” Walden University, www.waldenu.edu/programs/criminal-justice/resource/what-Is-restorative-justice.

She does so in her position at the legal firm, and she also continues that mission with her speaking and podcasting efforts. Her show, Oral Arguments, is geared towards sex positivity and empowerment, especially in relation to tech and victims rights. The Broken Cycle Media team is incredibly grateful for Norma’s advocacy work, as well as her candidness throughout this very empowering, illuminating conversation.  Norma's Website:https://www.normabuster.com/Norma on Instagram:http://https://www.instagram.com/normabuster_CA Goldberg Law: https://www.cagoldberglaw.com/CA Goldberg Law on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/cagoldberglaw/Oral Arguments Podcast:https://open.spotify.com/show/3R4xGDNE4p6oLxjaXS2scsOral Arguments Podcast on IG:https://www.instagram.com/oralargumentspodcast/For additional resources and a list of related non-profit organizations, please visit http://www.somethingwaswrong.com/resources

133: [Megan AKA Fallon] One Heck of a Journey

Content warning: coercion, blackmail, extortion, abduction, kidnapping, slavery, sociopathy, psychopathy, intimate partner violence, and attempted murder.Megan is a loving family woman, equestrian, and survivor of abduction and attempted slavery born in Southern California. Although Megan spent many of her younger years growing her love for horses at her family’s idyllic Colorado stable, her life prior was anything but calm. In fact, Megan was originally named Fallon Daniel, and on November 21st, 1985, Megan’s birth father would attempt to extort $90,000 from the couple who would eventually adopt and raise her. After an unprecedented case that took the media by storm, Megan has joined us to share about all that’s come next for her in her journey and healing. The Broken Cycle Media team is undeniably grateful for my friend’s candor and advocacy, especially as this is the first time she’s shared her story at-large. We are also grateful for Megan’s mother, Susan, who was willing to join us for a short chat, which you will hear within this episode as well. Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Familieshttps://adultchildren.org/Andrea Ashley’s Adult Child Podcast https://www.adultchildpodcast.com/Adult Child Podcast on Instagramhttp://www.instagram.com/adultchildpodBesser van der Kolk’s bookshttps://www.besselvanderkolk.com/resources/the-body-keeps-the-scoreComplex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walkerhttps://www.pete-walker.com/complex_ptsd_book.htmlIt Didn’t Start With You by Mark Wolynnhttps://markwolynn.com/it-didnt-start-with-you/For additional resources and a list of related non-profit organizations, please visit http://somethingwaswrong.com/resources
