Whitney Houston's 2000 OUT Magazine Interview

Happy Pride, gay !! We’re kicking off a month of queer pop culture history with a deep dive into the revealing Whitney Houston profile from the May 2000 issue of Out Magazine. Written by Barry Walters and photos by David LaChapelle, this was Whitney’s first and only sit-down interview with a gay publication. "Yeah, this is Girlfriend's first big G-A-Y interview, something queer guys and gals from Kentucky to Kalamazoo have been craving since we first found Cissy Houston's daughter, the cousin of Dionne Warwick, calling to us across the airwaves in the mid '80s, singing about savin' all her love--for somebody. There's so much more to Houston's connection to gay culture than her much speculated upon sexual orientation, and with the release of her double-disc Greatest Hits comes an occasion to reappraise the omnipresent sister we've watched break records and survive trends since she became a near-instant superstar at age 21." Lindsay Lohan and the Production of The Canyons

This week, Troy and Dara dive into one of their all-time favorite pieces of journalism: the New York Times Magazine article “Here Is What Happens When You Cast Lindsay Lohan in Your Movie” by Stephen Rodrick. The 2013 story chronicles the chaotic three-week shoot of The Canyons—the low-budget erotic thriller written by Bret Easton Ellis, directed by Paul Schrader, and starring Lindsay Lohan and James Deen. “We don’t have to save her,” Schrader said. “We just have to get her through three weeks in July.” A month later, Schrader would be standing naked in a Malibu bedroom, missing his dogs and trying to coax Lohan out of her robe. Turns out three weeks can be a very long time. Nancy Jo November continues with Troy and Dara's deep dive into the Vanity Fair article, "I'm With Her!" which takes a closer look at some of the ghoulish +1's of the Sunset Strip... because behind every successful young celebutante is a man draining her of her money and spirit. This piece paints a vivid picture of the 2007 class of Hollywood High. It's Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Mischa Barton, Ashlee Simpson, Mary Kate Olsen, and the men who loved to yell at them on the sidewalk outside of Les Deux, like Kevin Federline, Brandon "Greasy Bear" Davis, Cisco Adler, Wilmer Valderrama, The Good Charlotte Twins, Harry Morton, and Pete Wentz.
