E86: Calm Under Pressure – What Combat Sports Teach Your Mind with Rich Cadden
Send White Fox Talking a MessageGetting hit is the least interesting part of combat sports. What matters is what happens to your mind when pressure rises and how training teaches you to stay calm, focused, and in control when your instincts want to panic. We sit down with Rich Cadden, a two-time Muay Thai world champion, BJJ brown belt, and coach who blends fight experience with NLP, hypnotherapy, CBT tools, and work with neurodiverse students. We talk about the mental health benefits of martial arts training and why the right gym culture can turn anger into discipline and insecurity into grounded confidence. Rich breaks down flow state and why it can feel like a clean, ethical “high” that helps quiet anxiety and depression through exercise-induced transient hypofrontality. You’ll also hear a practical look at fear management through evidence and repetition, the stress arousal curve that explains why people freeze, and the real-world survival responses of fight, flight, freeze, and fawn. We get into bullying, boundaries, and why self-defense starts long before a confrontation with posture, awareness, and trusting your gut. If you’re curious about Muay Thai, MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or boxing for stress relief, resilience, confidence, and community, this one is a roadmap. If you enjoy the show, subscribe, share it with someone who could use a stronger mindset, and leave a review. E85: When Words Aren’t Enough with Lesley Andrew – How Art Therapy Speaks for You
Send White Fox Talking a MessageYou can be “fine on paper” and still feel like your nervous system is on fire. That’s why we sit down with artist and registered art therapist Lesley Andrew to unpack how art therapy works when talking isn’t enough, and why the smallest creative act can be a turning point for stress, anxiety, trauma, burnout, and low mood. We get clear on what art therapy is and what it is not: not a graded art class, not performance, and not about producing a perfect final piece. Lesley explains how images, color, texture, and even mess can become a safe language for emotions that feel too tangled, too painful, or too hard to name. We also talk about the myths that keep people away, including the belief that you have to be “good at art,” and why creativity can be especially powerful for people who tend to overthink and intellectualize their feelings. The conversation widens into education and culture: what happens when schools cut arts, phones fill the empty space, and young people lose healthy outlets for expression. Lesley shares what real sessions can look like, how different materials can help regulate the nervous system, and how tiny wins like tolerating a mistake without erasing can build resilience over time. You’ll also hear practical ways to start today with low-pressure tools, plus how to find qualified support through NHS pathways, charities, private practice, and professional directories. If this resonates, listen now, share it with someone who’s carrying too much, and subscribe for more honest conversations about mental health, self-development, and tools that actually help. E84: Finding Stillness After Suicide — Martyn Watson On Grief, Poetry, And Healing
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat happens when grief becomes too heavy to carry alone? In this episode, we sit down with a guest who turned unimaginable loss into something quietly powerful. After losing his sister Nancy to suicide, he found himself searching for a way to process what couldn’t be explained. What followed wasn’t a clear path forward, but a gradual return to stillness—through poetry, nature, and the act of putting thoughts into words. We talk about the reality of grief that doesn’t follow a straight line, the weight of questions that never fully resolve, and how writing became a way to sit with emotion rather than escape it. From long walks in nature to late-night reflections, this is a story about learning to live alongside loss, not outrun it. This conversation is gentle, honest, and deeply human. It’s about finding space in the noise, meaning in the pain, and connection through shared experience. E83: From Bartender To Ironman — Jake Speakman On Running, Identity, And Self-Discipline
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat if the thing you use to numb the noise is the same thing keeping you from real rest? We sit down with Jake Speakman to unpack a life spent under club lights—shots to start shifts, finishes at 4 a.m., and the illusion that sedation equals sleep. A lockdown run in flat Vans cracked that cycle. What began as clumsy first miles turned into a sub-2:45 marathon, and then into a leap that made little sense on paper: signing up for an Ironman without even knowing how to swim. Jake takes us inside the habits that stuck: early alarms, quiet streets, and training blocks that respect recovery as much as speed. He talks about the brain fog of sleep debt, and learning why alcohol knocks you out but never truly lets you rest. We travel with him to Australia—through pool sessions at dawn, group open-water swims shadowed by the memory of his uncle’s drowning, and a scorching bike leg where fueling decides the day. The finish line matters, but the bigger win is identity: proof that you can learn new skills, set bolder goals, and put structure back into a life that once revolved around the bar. Along the way, we dig into the nuts and bolts: building a 130 km training week, planning hangover days with Coach Steve, and swapping road monotony for trails and sensory cues that calm the mind. Jake’s move to daytime work helps break social gravity, creating space for routines that scale—running, yoga, better sleep, and coaching education so he can give others the playbook he had to write the hard way. Press play for a grounded, hopeful guide to changing course: from hospitality burnout to morning miles, from sedation to true sleep, and from self-doubt to goals that once felt impossible. E82: A 1% Chance Of Survival — How Georgia Carmichael Rewrote Her Story
Send White Fox Talking a MessageA 1% chance of survival. Two spinal injuries. A terminal diagnosis. Georgia Carmichael heard every reason to stop, and still chose to fight, visualise, train, and rebuild. We welcome the GB para-rower to share how a kayak accident led to months in a coma, how a second spinal stroke revealed a rare mitochondrial condition, and how a goals list — starting with survive and ending with Snowdon — became her compass through the darkest stretch of her life. Georgia takes us inside the lonely, relentless grind of rehabilitation: relearning speech, navigating life in a wheelchair, and turning visualisation into daily practice when progress felt invisible. She explains how an athletic mindset, family support, and a stubborn streak helped her challenge the impossible — from standing for the first time in three and a half years to taking her first unthinkable steps across a pebbled beach. We trace the moment she left her wheelchair on the dock to return to the water, the empowerment of adapted rowing, and how the river’s rhythm gave her a future to row towards. Along the way, we unpack practical lessons in resilience: how to set audacious yet actionable goals, manage risk without living in fear, and “control the controllables” when outcomes remain uncertain. Georgia also opens up about working as a physio to support others through life-changing injuries, the community she found with Millimetres to Mountains, and why she has just booked a one-way ticket to New Zealand and Australia — honouring the hospital-day visions of far horizons and a wider life. E81: Stronger Minds, Stronger Bodies w/ Ricky Moore
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat if the gym could be your most reliable tool for mental clarity, resilience, and purpose? We sit down with British and world champion lifter Ricky Moore to unpack how strength training, disciplined routines, and small daily wins can pull you out of the dark and set a new standard for your life—especially if you’re a man over 40 standing at a crossroads.Ricky’s story is raw and real: a turbulent start, a turn toward the iron, and the loss of his wife, Jem, whose parting words—“Don’t let it kill you as well”—became his compass. He explains how training five to six days a week gave him a reason to get up, how the focus of a 250‑kilo squat crowds out intrusive thoughts, and how the endorphin lift after training buys you hours of better mood. We dive into the difference between negative distractions like alcohol and positive distractions like exercise, the power of community in the gym, and why staying 90–95% ready year‑round beats yo‑yo extremes. You’ll hear practical, no‑nonsense steps: three weekly workouts as a baseline, daily step goals, an 80/20 approach to single‑ingredient foods, and sleep treated as training. Ricky shares his visualization method—feel the win, feel the loss, then move—and his rule about making deals with yourself you refuse to break. If you’ve ever crashed out in mid‑February, this plan avoids the all‑or‑nothing trap and builds confidence through small, sustainable wins.We also talk mindset at the elite level as Ricky targets Mr Universe: marginal gains, controlling the controllables, and leaving no box unticked. E80: Hope In Pink: How Candlelighters Lifts Families Through Childhood Cancer
Send White Fox Talking a MessageA three-year-old is diagnosed with a brain tumour and loses his sight, a family’s world tilts, and somehow the ward becomes a place where breakfast can be unicorn toast and music therapy softens the edges. We sit with Natalie from Candlelighters and Amy, mum to Noah, to unpack what true wraparound support looks like when a child is diagnosed with cancer—and why it changes everything. From the first hours after diagnosis, Candlelighters meets families where the system can’t. We talk through immediate grants that cover the sudden spike in costs—travel to Leeds, parking, meals, clothes that work with lines and dressings—so parents can stay bedside without financial panic. Natalie explains how the team brings play, colour, and calm into clinical spaces; funds roles like youth support workers and counsellors; and creates safe havens such as the Pavilion and the Square to restore a sense of normal. Amy shares the whirlwind of Noah’s treatment on Ward 31, the grief of first milestones after therapy, and the quiet power of a voice her son could trust when he could no longer see faces. We also explore what happens after the bell rings. Talking therapies help parents and young people process trauma on their timeline, while mums’ and dads’ groups, sibling sessions, and family events build a peer community that understands without explanation. The Cottage keeps families together when distance would split them. Volunteers and donors fuel it all—local companies, football fans, and everyday fundraisers turning empathy into guitars at the bedside, breakfast that a child will actually eat, and a place to breathe between scans. If this episode moved you, help us spread the word: subscribe, leave a review, and share with someone who cares about children’s health and family wellbeing. E79: How Gratitude, Coaching, And Small Wins Help Carol Rebuild After Assault
Send White Fox Talking a MessageSome stories arrive as a whisper and land like a bell. Carol joins us to share how she moved through the aftermath of sexual assault and years of domestic abuse—not with a single breakthrough, but with steady steps, messy courage, and tools that actually work. Her turning point wasn’t dramatic; it was a decision to try a mindset workshop where a coach listened without judgment and offered a path forward. From there, she learned to reframe painful memories, name patterns she once normalised, and create daily anchors that made life feel possible again. We explore the homework that mattered—like burning a cruel letter to mark a boundary—and the skills that stuck, including a simple pattern interrupt that halted panic in its tracks: “Stop talking shit. What’s the truth?” Carol talks about timeline work that surfaced the hidden toll of control and gaslighting, and how gratitude doesn’t excuse harm but can change what an event means for your future. We trace her small wins: daily walks, mindful eating, and journaling that turned into published poetry. She even returned to the city where she was assaulted, this time supported, reclaiming ground one step at a time. The conversation expands into service and self: launching FLARE (Life After Rape Exists) as a peer space for those not ready for therapy, and starting a baking venture and cooking group to reclaim a kitchen once used to shame her. Setbacks still happen—flashbacks, false starts, hard days—but Carol shows how compassion and repetition build strength. E78: Chris Jones - One Man, 6,500 Miles, And The Courage To Talk About Suicide, Purpose, And Recovery
Send White Fox Talking a MessageA trophy on the table can’t soften the moment Chris admits he once sat under a tree with a rope. What follows is a frank, energising journey from lost purpose to a coastline walk that rebuilt his mind, his daily habits, and his mission to help other men speak before they break. We talk about how policy changes and a forced sale stripped meaning from two decades of work with excluded teens, how lockdown isolation compounded the fallout, and how phone-based counselling from the Masonic Charitable Foundation handed him tools for rumination, grounding, and mindful attention that actually stuck. Then the choice that changed everything: a 6,500-mile walk around Great Britain. No deadlines. No fixed plan. Just the sea to the right, a tent on his back, and long winter nights to read and listen. Chris shares the practical wins: breath work from James Nestor’s Breath, insights from The Body Keeps the Score and Lost Connections, and the way nature lowers cortisol and reframes problems. He’s honest about the lows—soaked gear, short light, and the crash after company—but the highlight is people. Strangers fed him, housed him, and shared hidden stories of suicide and survival that rarely surface until stigma drops. We dig into simple tools for men’s mental health that don’t require a diagnosis: nasal breathing and longer exhales to downshift the nervous system, micro-mindfulness to halt spirals, movement as a pressure release, and the habit of naming what you feel. Chris also raised over £90,000 for the Masonic Charitable Foundation, found a new voice as a speaker, and is writing a book to translate dense psychology into clear, usable steps for guys who think they’re fine—until they’re not.If this story lands with you, share it with someone who could use a way back to themselves. E77: From Stress To Stillness with Bonnie - How Conscious Breathing Rewires Your Body And Mind
Send White Fox Talking a MessageYour most powerful tool for calm might be hiding in plain sight. We sit down with Bonnie from Bonnie’s Breathwork to unpack how conscious breathing can transform stress, sleep, pain, and emotional resilience—without apps, gadgets, or long routines. From the first few minutes, Bonnie connects the dots between ancient practices and modern nervous system science, explaining why nose breathing, longer exhales, and simple patterns change heart rate, chemistry, and mood in minutes. We walk through an easy, on-the-spot 4–7 exercise you can use in traffic or before a tough meeting. Bonnie demystifies conscious connected breathwork, clarifies when and why an activated approach can help process stored emotions, and shares essential safety notes so beginners start wisely. We explore common pitfalls—like mouth breathing, chest-only inhales, and chasing big cathartic “highs”—and show how steady, gentle practice builds real integration. You’ll learn how to feel for diaphragmatic expansion at the ribs, why nasal breathing improves sleep and recovery, and how kids, workplaces, and rehabs are already benefiting from these skills.Along the way, we highlight practical cues you can implement today: check in with your breath during daily pauses, relax your jaw and shoulders, expand the ribcage sideways and back, and default to the nose. Send White Fox Talking a MessageA dying head torch, a cold wind on Ingleborough, and a 19-year-old who refuses to quit—Bailey Backhouse joins us to share how he tackled the Yorkshire Three Peaks three times in 36 hours to raise funds for Andy’s Man Club. He’s an electrical apprentice by day, a boxer by training, and a mountain mover when purpose calls. What started as a bold idea over a family celebration became a community-backed fundraiser with real impact, powered by grit, family support, and a clear mission to push back against silence around men’s mental health. We dive into how boxing gave Bailey structure, respect, and a way to channel anger into discipline. The turnaround came with movement: miles in the hills, time on the bags, better food, and sleep he guards on purpose. E74: Breaking the Silence - Kaylee Thompson's Courageous Justice Journey
Send White Fox Talking a MessageImagine carrying a traumatic secret from age four until adulthood, then finding the strength not only to seek justice but to transform your experience into advocacy for others. This is Kaylee Thompson's remarkable story.Thirty years after experiencing sexual assault as a toddler, Kaylee made the life-changing decision to report her abuser to police. Despite the challenges of a historic case with limited physical evidence, she persevered through an 18-month investigation that culminated in a successful conviction. Most powerfully, she chose to waive her legal anonymity, declaring: "I don't need my name hiding because that happened to me, and it's him that should feel ashamed."Kaylee's journey illuminates the complex reality of childhood trauma - from teenage drinking to escape painful memories, to the triggers of seeing her own young children at the same age she was abused. Yet her story isn't defined by victimhood but by resilience and action. Today, she works with West Yorkshire Survivor Leaders, helping steer a £250,000 program that empowers other survivors to become agents of change. Their initiatives include a skills academy that equips women to advocate for systemic improvements in how institutions respond to sexual violence.Through her advocacy, Kaylee challenges damaging terminology like "vulnerable victims" and champions a perspective where survivors lead conversations about reform. She's now developing a podcast platform where others can share their stories, building a community of strength and hope. Her message resonates with clarity: regardless of when abuse occurred, your voice deserves to be heard, and healing isn't just possible - it can become a catalyst for helping others find their own path to justice and recovery.Have you experienced sexual violence and want to connect with advocacy resources? E73: Inside the Storm: Sip Powers Veteran's Journey Through PTSD
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat does it take to paddle, mountain bike, and run 350 kilometers without sleep? For Sip Powers, it's about making visible the invisible struggles of veterans living with PTSD.After 34 years of military service and the devastating loss of his wife to suicide, Sip found himself facing his own mental health crisis. Despite years of helping wounded veterans through rehab programs while denying his own trauma, he eventually reached breaking point. "My complex PTSD is like skimming a boulder that just never stops," he explains with raw honesty. "All I want is for that stone to stop and sink at some stage."Now, Sip channels his pain into extraordinary endurance challenges that mirror the relentless nature of trauma. Having completed the Enduro 214 (all Wainwrights in one sitting during two storms) and the Enduro 7 (seven extreme events over seven days without sleep), he's preparing for his next mission: the Enduro 3. This August, he'll paddle from Fort William to Inverness, mountain bike back, then run the same route – all without sleep.Sleep disruption emerged as a common thread among the veterans Sip worked with through Battle Back, a program helping seriously wounded soldiers rehabilitate through outdoor activities. "We're asking these veterans to hold up a job, look after their family, be civil, be good people, and they are in a world of pain," he explains, highlighting why his no-sleep challenges carry such powerful symbolism.Beyond raising funds for Combat Stress and Mountain Rescue, Sip's mission is awareness. He believes his "skimming boulder" will finally sink when everyone knows about resources available to veterans suffering in silence. His journey highlights both the transformative power of the outdoors for mental health and the critical gaps in support for those who've served their country.Follow Sip's extraordinary journey and support his cause by visiting the Extreme Outdoors website. E72: Healing Through Trauma: Miranda Arieh's Journey from Patient to Practitioner
Send White Fox Talking a MessageMiranda Arieh's journey from mental health patient to pioneering trauma specialist will forever change how you understand recovery and healing. After spending her teenage years in foster care and being sectioned under the Mental Health Act, Miranda became what she calls a "rebound patient" for 15 years—unable to find effective treatment within a system that often re-traumatized rather than healed. The breakthrough came when Miranda decided to work within the very system she struggled against, eventually creating the Heroes Program—an innovative eight-week curriculum that's already helped thousands recover from trauma and mental health struggles. But her approach turns traditional treatment models upside down."We're not here to fix you or treat you," Miranda explains, challenging the medical model that treats emotions as illnesses. Instead, she sees trauma as "a living breathing wound that opens in the present moment when echoes of the past are triggered." This perspective shifts healing from revisiting painful memories to working with present-day triggers—providing tools to apply "ointment to the wound" each time it opens. The program's philosophy extends to addiction, viewing it not as the primary problem but as "an attempt to solve a problem" when people lack capacity to hold difficult emotions. "We're almost like personal trainers for the mind and nervous system," Miranda says, teaching participants to build emotional strength rather than numbing out. What makes Miranda's work truly revolutionary is her firm belief that healing is possible for everyone. "There is no order of difficulties in healing trauma," she insists—someone with severe abuse can heal just as completely as someone with milder trauma. The goal is what she calls a "return to self"—living authentically rather than in fear.Ready to change your relationship with anxiety, trauma, or difficult emotions? Listen now to discover the transformative power of befriending rather than battling the wounded parts of yourself. E71: Walking Out of the Dark - Kelvyn James
Send White Fox Talking a MessageThe healing power of nature and human connection takes centre stage as Kelvyn James returns to White Fox Talking, sharing his transformative journey from profound darkness to founding a thriving mental health charity.Kelvyn lays bare the brutal realities that shaped him - growing up in a violent household where his earliest memory is "an exceptional act of violence" and later facing the unimaginable trauma of his mother's murder. What followed was a five-year court battle where he repeatedly faced his mother's killer, a struggle he initially kept hidden from those closest to him.The mountains became both sanctuary and danger zone as Kelvyn sought escape through increasingly risky climbs. "I was never suicidal," he explains, "but completely believing I deserved to get hurt." These high-risk behaviours provided momentary relief but failed to address his underlying trauma. The breakthrough came when he discovered that true healing happens through connection - with nature and with others. This realization became the foundation for Wellness Walks, a charity offering free nature walks specifically designed for people struggling with mental health. Since becoming an official charity in September 2023, they've expanded rapidly, with nearly 100 volunteers running walks across the UK. What makes these walks uniquely effective is what Kelvyn calls "therapy in 3D" - the side-by-side walking creates natural opportunities for connection without the pressure of face-to-face therapy. His newly released book "Walking Out of the Dark" chronicles this journey, with all proceeds supporting the charity's work. Though it begins in darkness, Kelvyn promises readers there's a happy ending - not because the pain disappears, but because he found a path through it. "If somebody carries a great weight for too long, one of two things is going to happen - either you're going to get stronger or you're going to break," he reflects. "For a long time I didn't know which it would be, and by the end of the book I understand it's both."Ready to experience the healing power of nature? E70: From Homelessness to Community Healing: Imran Shah's Journey
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat happens when hate crime tears through a community? Behind the headlines and political noise, real people suffer lasting trauma that transforms into a "siege mentality," severely impacting mental health and wellbeing. Imran Shah, recently honored with an MBE for his 25 years of work in community cohesion, brings us to the front lines of this battle.Drawing from his powerful personal journey that began with homelessness at age 15, Imran reveals how misinformation, exploitation, and division are strategically weaponized in today's digital landscape. His Digital Cohesion Unit works around the clock to identify potential flashpoints before violence erupts. "After the Southport murders," Imran explains, "we were contending with two types of social media posts—those from state actors planting misinformation to drive divisiveness, and those from extremist groups trying to get people 'frothing at the mouth.'"The conversation shifts between deeply personal stories and broader societal observations. When communities lose youth centers, educational support, and economic opportunities, the vacuum is filled by those seeking to exploit vulnerable people. Yet Imran consistently highlights the counternarrative rarely covered in headlines—how everyday people from different faiths and backgrounds come together after tragedies to rebuild and support one another.Perhaps most powerful is Imran's insight into breaking cycles of hate through education. "The social values are being set at a much younger age now," he notes when discussing programs that teach children about exploitation, radicalization, and community values before harmful influences can take root. This episode offers a rare, nuanced look at community cohesion work that happens behind the scenes, revealing how personal trauma can transform into purpose when supported by compassion and connection. As Imran powerfully states, "If you're waiting for somebody to come in and help, you're going to be waiting a bloody long time."Join our conversation that cuts through polarized debates to find common ground in our shared humanity. E69: Woolly Therapists: How Grace Olson's Sheep Are Teaching Children Mental Resilience
Send White Fox Talking a MessageGrace Olson's sheep aren't livestock – they're therapists with woolly coats and gentle souls that can transform lives. During this captivating conversation, Grace shares how her journey through bullying and suicidal tendencies led to unexpected healing through animal connections. Now, she's channelling these therapeutic experiences into beautifully illustrated children's books that might just save young lives. Each of Grace's sheep-centered stories carries profound emotional lessons disguised as charming tales. "Merlin Finds His Magic" teaches children that helping others is where true magic lies. "Galahad Finds His Voice" speaks directly to sensitive children who feel different, showing them their uniqueness is actually their superpower. "Beryl Finds His Wings" demonstrates how changing negative thought patterns can transform one's entire experience of life. What makes these stories particularly powerful is that they're based on real therapy sheep with remarkable abilities. Grace describes watching Merlin deliberately approach a grieving mother who had lost her son to suicide, standing with her for an hour in the snow and bringing her to laughter. The science behind animal therapy proves fascinating – sheep naturally maintain a relaxed parasympathetic state, and through mirror neurons, humans unconsciously adopt similar calm when in their presence.Grace's mission comes from a place of profound urgency. E68: The Wim Hof Method: Breath Work, Cold Exposure, and Mental Resilience with Jack Walker
Send White Fox Talking a MessageEver wondered how something as simple as your breath and cold water could completely transform your mental state and physical health? Jack Walker, certified Wim Hof instructor and founder of Wellness Retreat Spain, takes us on a deeply personal journey from struggling with cannabis addiction and unexplained depression to finding extraordinary clarity through breath work and cold exposure. We are joined in the studio by Bradley Perigo, who practices the Wim Hof method. Also joining the conversation, online, is White Fox Talking resident Psychologist Dave Gallagher, to provide a scientific input. The science behind the Wim Hof Method proves fascinating – when we deliberately cycle our nervous system between fight-or-flight and rest-digest states through specialized breathing techniques and cold immersion, we're literally rewiring our brain's stress response. This practice builds resilience that transfers to everyday challenges, from road rage to workplace pressure, creating a profound shift in how we handle life's difficulties. What makes this approach so powerful is its accessibility. Jack explains how just two minutes in cold water (not necessarily ice!) can activate cardiovascular improvements through vasoconstriction and vasodilation, essentially exercising your 100,000 kilometres of blood vessels like you'd train a muscle. The method also stimulates brown fat activation, boosts immune function, and provides remarkable mental clarity – all confirmed by scientific studies showing significant improvements in mood, energy, and sense of control.Whether you're battling stress, seeking performance enhancement, or simply curious about pushing beyond comfort zones, this episode offers practical insights for incorporating these techniques safely into your routine. Jack's upcoming wellness retreats in Spain provide an immersive opportunity to experience these benefits in a supportive environment, complete with yoga, meditation, and fresh farm-to-table dining.Ready to discover what your body and mind are truly capable of? E67: Padraic McDonagh - Loss, Resilience, and Community Create Champions
Send White Fox Talking a MessageWhat happens when the fighting spirit meets profound loss? Two-time British Thai Boxing Champion Padraic McDonagh takes us on a raw, unfiltered journey through his remarkable life—from discovering Thai boxing as a 12-year-old on a Leeds council estate to building a legacy that transforms lives through combat sports.McDonagh's story pivots around his mentor Steve Adams, who spotted his talent immediately and became a father figure in his life. "Stick at this, you're going to be a champion," Steve told him after his first training session. Those words planted seeds of self-belief that flourished into British championships by age 16. But when Steve passed away suddenly in 2010, McDonagh's world collapsed, leading to a dark period of grief, anxiety, and excessive drinking. The podcast doesn't shy away from mental health struggles. McDonagh speaks candidly about developing "death anxiety" and how counseling ultimately saved him: "Even after the first session I could breathe again." His honesty dismantles stereotypes about fighters and masculinity, showing that seeking help requires tremendous courage.Today, McDonagh's Golden Team Boxing Gym stands as both memorial and mission—a 4,000 square foot space where champions train alongside 73-year-old charity boxers and troubled youth find direction. His work extends beyond the gym into local primary schools, where he shows children from disadvantaged backgrounds that they too can achieve greatness: "I'm just from an Irish family in the middle of Seacroft and you can do exactly the same."The conversation illuminates how combat sports naturally incorporate the "five pillars of mental health"—exercise, nutrition, sleep, community, and self-care—creating an environment where healing happens through discipline and connection. For anyone battling their own demons or looking to make a difference in their community, McDonagh's journey offers powerful proof that our deepest wounds can become our greatest purpose.Golden Team YoutubeGolden Team InstagramSubscribe now to hear more stories of transformation and resilience from everyday heroes making extraordinary impact.Support the show
