Today on the podcast I am delighted to say that I am going to be joined by two amazing artists, who are Drew of the Grindcore band See You Next Tuesday and the one man noisegrind act,CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP CHOP (aka Chop7Times, Chop7x, Chopx7) from New Haven, CT. Together these two artists have created one of my favourite releases of the year, a collaborative EP titled 'Brothers'.This collaborative release is based off of a book entitled The Brothers’ War, a 1998 fantasy novel by Jeff Grubb; it is the first book in the Magic: The Gathering: Artifacts Cycle, detailing the epic conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra on the world of Dominaria. The book explores the origins of Urza and the magical and technological arms race that leads to cataclysmic events. For the album, side A, See You Next Tuesday’s Chris wrote his lyrics based on the perspective of the Brother Urza, while Chop wrote his lyrics from Mishra's perspective for side B.We are going to be going through the entire EP, talking about how this collaboration began, why they choose 'The Brothers War' as the inspiration for the EP and how it was used to construct the music, Magic The Gathering and their awesome music video, 'Old Thoughts, and Regrets'. The EP takes 4 tracks from the album and reimagines them for the live environment. Having spent the last year touring the album, Billy found that the songs evolved with the energy of a live band and after being inspired by NPR’s famous Tiny Desk series decided to capture the songs in a new stripped down form. Recorded while recovering from the effects of long-covid Billy credits this as his most honest vocal performance recorded to date. Calling on his wife and friends to help bring these versions to life, recording was carried out guerilla style in bedrooms, rehearsal studios and secret spaces. The recordings capture the energy of this, employing shakers, drum machines and melodicas in a stark contrast to the maximalist approach to production on the record. The album has been produced by Christian Best, mixed by Dan Fox and mastered by Jamie Hyland. Speaking about The Inheritance of Fear, lead singer James O'Donnell said: “This album explores the ways fear is passed down; through generations, through relationships, through the stories we tell ourselves. It looks at the psychological weight of inherited anxieties, the way past traumas shape our present, and how we either break free or become trapped in these cycles. It examines past memories and re-imagines the lives of those that may have influenced the people we are today. It was an exercise in self-discovery, unearthing all those skeletons….so to speak! Rather than depicting the pub as a site of excess, they portray it as a communal refuge, which is depicted through the characters and situations encountered by Larry, the bartender of the Pub the story takes place in.
