And some New Yorkers haven’t ventured out of their apartments since the power went out. In multi-story public housing complexes like La Guardia Houses on the Lower East Side, getting in and out of the building can be daunting.

Transom Alumni's "Working Now" for the SoundCloud Fellowship

Proposal for the SoundCloud Fellowship: http://blog.soundcloud.com/2012/07/03/fellows As alumni of the Transom Story Workshop (http://transom.org), our idea is to create and share stories about the working lives of people today in the US and around the world. We also want to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the book “Working” by oral historian/radio producer Studs Terkel. The book is about “a search for daily meaning as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor; in short, for a sort of life rather than a Monday though Friday sort of dying.” To honor Studs and his legacy, we want to re-introduce his methodology to a larger audience through a SoundCloud Fellowship demonstration project. We also want to help strengthen the “spoken word” community on SoundCloud and encourage others to make “radio stories”. Follow the project here: http://soundcloud.com/workingnow

Hear in the City: If Costco were a person

From our recent grocery shopping show on Hear in the City, we bring you contributor Will Coley's audio essay on why he likes Costco so much, "warts and all". The warehouse store chain has proven to weather the recession well, perhaps by not accepting credit cards other than American Express, but Will asked recently, "Can I take back my Costco love?" when he read about the company's agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to screen employees with the E-verify system for legal immigration status. The voluntary social security data scanning system has drawn criticism for its intrusion of privacy and because one in 25 entries are flawed or misspelled, resulting in termination of employment or declining to hire qualified job applicants.

Trust & Translation: Community Policing in New Bedford, MA

The fishing industry in New Bedford, MA has always attracted sailors and workers from Europe, West Africa and beyond. The city is home to one of the largest Portuguese communities in the United States. But in recent years, more and more Spanish speakers are arriving from Central America. Will Coley reports on how New Bedford’s police are trying to adapt to the change. This piece was created as part of the Transom Story Workshop: Fall 2011 http://transom.org/?page_id=21849
