Spiritual but Not Religious? Let’s Talk.

Episode 1 establishes the heart and purpose of Wisdom in Heels: creating a space where spiritually mature, emotionally grounded, purpose-driven women can ask real questions and receive biblically grounded, thoughtful answers. This conversation begins with honesty — not performance. Why This Podcast Was Born Sam opens by sharing the tension that sparked the show: Growing up in church. Being poured into by church members who were also part of fraternities and sororities. Then hearing those same organizations labeled “demonic.” Condense to 4000 characters. That disconnect hurt. The episode begins as a personal spiritual struggle: How can people who loved, mentored, funded, and supported me be called evil because of an organization? Instead of suppressing the question, Sam took it to someone she trusted spiritually — and that conversation became Wisdom in Heels. Two key definitions emerged: Sam’s Perspective Wisdom = Life-learned experience. “Hard head makes a soft behind.” Knowledge tested by fire. Not just knowing — but having been there and come out of it. Being able to tell the story from the other side. Rev. Lila’s Perspective Wisdom = Knowledge applied through the Holy Spirit. Not just quoting Scripture. Not dictating how others must apply it. Teaching the Word, then allowing the Spirit to guide personal application. Key tension addressed: The church often gives knowledge — but tries to control how it’s applied. Religion vs. Spirituality A major theme in this episode. Sam’s Concern: Why do people say “I’m spiritual but not religious”? Why does church sometimes feel transactional (e.g., “Give $200, get $1,000 back”)? Why does commitment sometimes feel like buying into something that doesn’t address real emotional struggles? Rev. Lila’s Response: Everyone is religious — we all have routines. Spirituality in Christianity means relationship with Christ. The fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22–26) defines spiritual maturity: Love Joy Peace Patience Kindness Goodness Faithfulness Gentleness Self-control Spirituality without fruit is performance. Powerful takeaway: Some people want spirituality without commitment. Why People Leave Church Sam articulates what many feel: The church didn’t grow with her. Youth ministry prepared her for childhood. Adulthood struggles were met with condemnation instead of context. Teaching lacked transparency and testimony. Rev. Lila acknowledges: Some churches operate in control or fear. Some leaders hide behind the cross without sharing testimony. Community is missing in many spaces. However: Not all churches are unhealthy. Community and growth require intentional participation. A healthy church should feel like a gas station — refueling your spirit. Fraternities & Sororities: Faith Conflict The episode returns to the original question. Key conclusion: Organizations are not inherently evil. If you seek the Kingdom first, everything else falls into alignment. Many civil rights leaders were both church leaders and members of fraternities/sororities. Community has historically been strengthened through both. The deeper issue: Division weakens community. Core Spiritual Anchors from Episode 1 The enemy’s role (John 10:10): to kill, steal, destroy. We overcome by testimony. Favor follows faithfulness. Relationship with God matters more than religious performance. God speaks directly to individuals — not just through leaders. Tone of the Episode This wasn’t polished theology. It was layered conversation. Honest. Intergenerational. Question-driven. Rooted in Scripture but not dismissive of doubt. The episode closes with prayer and an invitation: Bring your questions. Ask what you’ve been afraid to ask. Heels on. Heads up. Be Word-ready..
