    Dr. Schirmer At Issue

The month of March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Dr. Timothy Schirmer, who sees patients in the Specialty Center at Hardin Memorial Hospital, said colon cancer does not have to be deadly, "Colon cancer prevention can be done through colonoscopies and the like, by removing the polyps before they can have a chance to turn into cancer, so I think that's a big difference between many other types of screening programs is that we can actually prevent the cancer."

    Chief Blue Retirement Show

A Kenton fire chief who has worked under eight mayors and seven safety service directors will be retiring next week. The last day for Russ Blue, who became chief in 2002, will be Friday March 18, "After a career of about 41 years and eight months. It's been a great career. I'm going to miss it, but it's time. We have a lot of young guys at the department now, and I think it's time to make a change, and I want to move on and enjoy life and spend more time with my wife and my children and grandchildren and play a little golf when I get a chance." Chief Blue said it would have been impossible for him to do his job without the support of his wife and family.
