    musings on the hunger games and chappell roan

    hey girl hey, i know it’s been 4 months and no i don’t wanna talk about it 😭 but i actually do in this episode as always. this eppy is brought to you by an undisclosed number of biscoff ice cream bars and a very exhausted woman on the verge of collapse, but still, we prevail. i’ve got a few things to say about suzanne collins’ frankly frightening ability to make me cry, how crusty america is right now, and whether or not chappell roan is a gay icon in presence AND in practice. let’s get into it girlies. podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepodlauryn’s instagram: @laurynjcarltonTIMESTAMPS:00:00 - intro01:36 - america? america has a problem04:55 - out with the old, in with the new (job)14:10 - sunrise on the weeping 24:10 - chappell roan on call her daddy

    new year, new me (in theory)

    happy new year folks! this may be a little late but as you’ll learn in the eppy there’s a good reason 🤧 i wanted to take this time to talk about how the “new year, new me!” phrase that has appeared in the cultural zeitgeist this time every year since 2011 has a ring of truth to it. along the way, we’ll dabble in a little post-2024 reflection, set our guiding words for this year, and motivate ourselves with 1-star reviews. let’s get into it!TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - intro01:11 - kicking off the new year with a rare respiratory event03:52 - “new year new me” is kinda true tho (hear me out)13:44 - favorite media i found in 2024 26:33 - setting my guiding words for 202536:27 - podcast reflections 39:14 - 1 ⭐️ review FOLLOW ME HERE:podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepodlauryn’s instagram: @laurynjcarltonREFERENCED IN THIS POD:jaimmy koroma’s IG pagemorgan harper nichols’ word of the year post 2 whits 1 cup podcast

    campus ministries are low-key a pyramid scheme

    hi hi, i know it’s been forever but i’m back on the mic to discuss something that’s been cooking in my noggin for a really long time: campus ministries and their uncanny commonalities with pyramid schemes & MLMs. you may be thinking, “huh?? explain yourself gorl” and i will! after this episode you’ll have a very hard time spotting the difference between these highly complex (and often problematic) groups. so let’s get into it!!TW: religious trauma, mental health insensitivity, toxic christianity note: if you are currently in a campus ministry, this is not meant to put you down or disparage you. this is my experience, and is meant to point out some of the many issues within evangelical christian culture. there very well could be ministries that are affirming, welcoming, and genuine, but i unfortunately have never experienced that. if you have, please share your experience in the comments! i would love to hear your thoughts :) podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepodlauryn’s Instagram: @laurynjcarltonTIME STAMPS:00:00 - intro03:01 - the musings that led to this episode 05:50 - what’s a campus ministry? 07:44 - the (slight) difference between pyramid schemes & MLMs 13:56 - there’s always a “pitch”19:19 - what brand is that??26:20 - the group dynamics STANK47:45 - how ‘bout that isolation?? 57:05 - it’s all in the language1:05:47 - where does this leave us?

    bridgerton = my deconstruction (kinda)

    we’re so back this week with a tonally lopsided episode about a gloriously horny period piece and how hard it is to unpack religious/familial trauma. it’s a wild ride so step into the carriage if you’re feelin’ frisky n’ risky!! TIME STAMPS: 00:00 - HAPPY PRIDE!!! 01:39 - i BURN for bridgerton XD 16:09 - thoughts on my deconstruction journey 37:37 - being bi-curious & exploring my sexuality 44:26 - AITA: moving across the country without consulting parents

    cicadas & men & bears, oh my!

    this week, cicadas are on my hit list and i don’t wanna talk about it (though i do for several minutes). we also have a pretty heavy discussion about how Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker’s truly disappointing cow dung graduation speech says a lot about the man vs. bear discourse, and finish things off with a man who ended his 9-month relationship because his girlfriend wants a big wedding. this one’s a doozy so let’s hop right into it! truths for the hopeless romantic

    i’m back!! these past couple of weeks have been entirely TOO busy. i actually recorded this in time for last Saturday but simply didn’t have a chance to post it until now. but to make up for it, i’m coming through with an episode for all my hopeless romantic girlies out there. before we hop into it, i have a very much needed discussion on musical-to-movie adaptations and how they’re wreaking havoc on the earth, consider dabbling in community theatre, and share some musings on my dating journey and the many truths i’ve adopted along the way. let’s get into it!! ranking romance tropes for the culture

    we’re back this week with truly one of my favorite episodes to date. in this installment, I discuss how quality therapy can be effective to the point of daily tears, how completely bonkers the Netflix reality tv show love is blind can be (and how i will still be watching season 6), and of worthiest note: a definitive ranking of common romance tropes. this is my greatest contribution to society. let us begin. finding hobbies (& sundry other topics)

    i’m afraid i have taken ill and shan’t improve for at least half a fortnight, BUT i was still able to record this episode before my voice became completely incoherent codswallop. this week, we chat about menstrual mayhem, coworker confidants (or lack thereof), and figuring out what i like to do as a freshly minted post-graduate. don’t forget the AITA story about conflicting morals regarding a fat juicy steak. let’s get into it!! my inerrant ranking of the hunger games franchise

    oh yeah, this is the one for my folks who remember who what when where why and how they were when the hunger games dropped down to earth to become the most iconically influential piece of media to ever change pop culture as we know it. today, the odds are in all of your favors because i’m giving you a deep dive into my thoughts, feelings, and experiences regarding the hunger games franchise in its entirety. somehow, there’s still enough room in this episode for my disdain for sprite prices, some therapy thoughts, and an AITA about 2 friends who honestly sound like they just need to have a long conversation complete with a good ol’ fashioned cry sesh. so if the hunger games isn’t your thing (which like, WHY???) there’s still something here for you this week. let’s get into it!! TIME STAMPS 00:00 - intro 00:49 - it’s COLD 02:36 - why is sprite so expensive?? 04:36 - therapy tingz 07:16 - capitalizing on nostalgia 10:22 - hunger games hyperfixation 23:21 - ranking the books & movies (ARGUE WITH THE PAVEMENT IDC) 45:43 - AITA: being mad at a friend for gifting a trip podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepod lauryn’s instagram: @laurynjcarlton

    on friendships and platonic love…

    this week, on a very non-descript, could-literally-be-a-random-day-in-early-march day, i talk about my reignited devotion to platonic love, my guiding words for the new year, and a recent epiphany i had about the quality of a person who’s a bad friend, complete with a topical AITA post that has me feeling conflicted (to say the least). i have a lotta thoughts on this one, so let’s get into it!! TIME STAMPS 00:00 - intro 02:47 - this new year feels old af 06:34 - resolutions out, guiding words in 11:02 - platonic love & no dating for a year 16:35 - is a bad friend a bad person?? 23:26 - AITA: declining a friendship b/c you have enough friends podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepod lauryn’s instagram: @laurynjcarlton

    welcoming the new year with wedding woes

    GAHHH i can’t believe i’ve finally started this podcast!! i’m beyond excited to embark on this new creative chapter, and am even more excited to share it with you. this episode is short n’ sweet—wellll maybe not the latter, because we’re reading our very first “am i the asshole” Reddit post featuring a wedding guest with questionable loyalties. if you wanna hear my thoughts, give this one a listen! TIME STAMPS 00:00 - WELCOME TO THE POD!! 01:24 - what inspired this podcast 09:22 - posting schedule 10:27 - podcast format/content 12:49 - AITA: bailing on a dry wedding podcast instagram: @worthyofnotepod lauryn’s instagram: @laurynjcarlton
