  3. 24

The Big Vinny V Show, May 26th

While AAA spent the week building up the main event of their next big show, TNA ran with what was supposed to be the main event of their last one. We finally got to see the full version of Mike Santana defending the TNA World Championship against Steve Maclin, and it was worth the wait, a pay per view-caliber match on free TV. The rest of the show wasn't much to write home about. The follow-up to Leon Slater's loss last week was practically non-existent, the other matches on the show were forgettable at best, and there was way too much Daria Rae. But at least the main event was good. Meanwhile, South of the border, we got the final build for the mask match between the Grande Americanos, with their flunkies squaring off in a quite insane tag match. Oh, and they also had a rematch of a thrilling championship fight, and the announcement of a general manager you might have heard of. All this and more on the Big Vinny V Show!

This simple accident would have lifelong repercussions for Kerry who, ultimately, would lose part of his foot due to complications. On today's podcast I will discuss the June 28, 1986, issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer covering this accident.

The Big Vinny V Show, May 19th

TNA and AAA both put out TV shows this week, and one of those promotions managed to avoid shooting themselves in the dick. Impact was a good example of everything right and wrong with TNA: a talented roster and good wrestling, but some mind-boggling booking and a crippling phobia of creating new stars. So we'll get into Cedric Alexander's defeat of Leon Slater, why it was even worse in execution than it sounds on paper, and what possible thought process might have been going through their heads. Also, why Mike Santana's top rival as world champion is apparently the dreaded heel authority figure. To be fair, we will also explain why Alexander vs. Slater was a certified banger of a match, but it wasn't even the best thing on the show. That honor goes to AJ Francis vs. KC Navarro in a street fight. As for AAA, well, the build for Noche de los Grandes peaked two weeks ago, and now we're all just twiddling our thumbs waiting for May 30. We'll lay it all out on the Big Vinny V Show!

  37. -10

The Big Vinny V Show, May 12th

Well, you can't win 'em all. TNA and AAA both put up TV shows last week, but neither turned out to be particularly exciting. TNA is still six weeks out from Slammiversary and seems to be in no hurry to put a card together for that show. So Impact this week has EC3 making a very uninspiring return against Eric Young; a promo segment building a feud exactly zero fans could possibly want to see; a short, forgettable tag team championship match, which was followed by a longer, non-title tag team match that felt more important; and a completely new and original program pitting a babyface challenger against a heel authority figure. And then it's capped off by an Arianna Grace main event, of all things. Meanwhile, in AAA, there's a pointless banger of a three-way, an AEW special of a debut, and a main event angle that accomplishes nothing. Thank god I'm entertaining. Come listen to the Big Vinny V Show!

  38. -11

    Karl Stern Show, May 12th

I continue my Long Form History of Pro Wrestling series today taken from the pages of my latest book DragonKingKarl's 1986-1987 Pro Wrestling Omnibus available from Amazon. Business is starting to slump temporarily in the wake of all the big shows in the spring of 1986. Stan Hansen has the AWA World heavyweight title stripped from him, Antonio Inoki is having big matches in Japan, and World Class continues to have various Von Erich problems. But 1987 is coming and the first few chess pieces for that record shattering year are starting to fall into place.

    Karl Stern Show, May 10th

Today on the 1000 Hours Podcast, the podcast all about the pioneer era of pro wrestling (1800s) we continue to go through my book DragonKingKarl's Pioneer Era Pro Wrestling Omnibus and we are nearing the end of the pioneer era. Martin 'Farmer' Burns had defeated Evan 'Strangler' Lewis and the reputation of Lewis took a big hit after the newspapers firmly believed the match had a predetermined outcome. However, Farmer Burns would not be champion for long as a newcomer, Dan McLeod, who burst onto the scene. Also, we revisit that time that H.M. Dufur was shot in the fact. Literally, shot in the face.

    Wrestling Observer Live, May 9th

The Gingerbread Man closed the go-home Smackdown for WWE Backlash. A show long angle short on comedy and long on being long. If not for the aura of Trick Williams, it would have been Bread Man Walking. Will we see a surprise Gingerbread appearance tonight? Pat McAfee, Gunther and Heymann, a lot of WWE surprises aren't very surprising. Why do I hate fun and whimsy? Plus, WWE Backlash, AEW Fairway to Hell and more. Check it out.
