    Wrestling With Accepting Personal Responsibility

Today we are talking about a second pandemic which has swept through our country and the world at large, it’s called immaturity and it manifests today in no larger way than refusing to accept personal responsibility, especially in the roles God gave men to fulfill.1 Corinthians 13:11  says, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”My guest to discuss this topic is Nicky Billou, a Christian immigrant from Iran who is tremendously grateful to be living in a free country.  Nicky has made the most of his freedom as a bestselling author of 11 published books and the host of two podcasts, The Thought Leader Revolution Podcast and the Sovereign Man Podcast. In this episode Nicky shares about fleeing Iran as an eleven-year-old boy with his family as the Shah fell and Christians like him were being persecuted, struggling as refugees in Athens Greece for two years before moving to Canada to begin life over.We discuss men's roles as protectors, providers, and presiders. We also cover the distinction between fault and responsibility and how power lies in responsibility because we can choose to accept it.And we close with the importance of male only accountability groups. You can learn more about Nicky by visiting his website at www.sovereignman.caSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Science and God

Our institutions of higher education have been co-opted by a liberal ideology for decades now that have wedged out belief in God as somehow being naïve and unacceptable to highly scientific minds.  I have had several guests on this show with Ivy league educations that told me if anyone in those advanced degree programs did believe in God it was very well hidden. My guest today is Douglas Ell, author of “Counting to God: A Personal Journey Through Science to Belief.” Doug was born into a religious home but by the time he started college, had drifted away from his religious upbringing which he viewed as outdated superstition. His non-religious beliefs were reaffirmed during his tenure as an undergraduate at MIT, where he came to embrace scientism – the view that scientific investigation is the only means of discovering real truth.  Sometime later, however Doug was introduced to the scientific theory of intelligent design, and everything began to change.Listen to the story of his wrestling match and how he was able to reconcile belief in God with his scientific background through his extensive research into intelligent design. He just completed a series of book for children and young adults called Godproofs which can be found at his website www.godproofs.com where he explains how science points to God's certainty.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with An Afterlife Experience!

I'm posting this episode on Good Friday ahead of Easter Sunday for 2026.This is the high Holy season of the Christian faith and for most of us, it is our fear and uncertainty of what happens to us when we die that we wrestle most with in deciding to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It all comes down to belief in the fact that Jesus died on the cross for all of us to atone for our sins and then was resurrected from death to live forever.A recent popular book and movie by the same name,  “Heaven is for Real” truly piques our curiosity because it describes an afterlife experience. My guest for this show is John Levay.  John has an incredible story of his own about being killed by his father as a nine year old boy and having a very vivd afterlife experience where he met his grandfather in heaven who took him to meet Jesus but was then resuscitated back to life by his father after experiencing deep remorse!John tells his story and how almost 44 years later his memory of the event returned to him in great detail after being repressed all that time.  He also relates a second vision of Christ after a desperate prayer during a church communion service. He then shares about wrestling with what God wanted Him to do with the revelations he received which were very specific about letting others know about the Seven Spirits saw.  These Seven Spirits are mentioned in the Bible and comprise specific elements of the Holy Spirit. This is truly a goosebump producing episode which should help confirm your belief in heaven but also create a desire to learn more about the Seven Spirits and their purpose.John's website is www.thereyouarejesus.com where you can learn more.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with God's Assignment

There are many stories in the bible of reluctant people who resist their assignment like Moses and Jonah for example. And many of us today still struggle with our own assignment, but God always seems to have His way with us in the end doesn’t He?My guest today is Dr. James Torkildson, a Clinical Psychologist and seasoned Behavioral Health Professional with a cultural voice that is rooted in Scripture with decades of clinical and spiritual leadership. Dr. Torkildson (known by many as “Dr. T”) has a career that spans over 40 years serving in behavioral health and faith-based organizations. He holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology & Counseling. In this episode we discuss his reluctance to accept His assignment from God, to write a book and become a stronger voice for Christian values in a profession where taking strong positions on faith is frowned upon.Upon retirement he received a more urgent "wake up call" on his birthday in the early morning hours and immediately sat down to begin writing his book titled "Awaken:  Exposing The Web of Deception Threatening Our Faith, Family and Freedom."  Today his obedience is being rewarded with the joy one only finds when walking in the true purpose God has given him.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Institutional Inertia

Servant leadership is a popular term today to talk about, and Christ himself demonstrated it by washing the disciples’ feet.  As Christians we should be using our spiritual gifts in volunteer service to advance His kingdom here on earth. But have you ever heard of Newton's first law of motion, or the law of inertia? It states that an object at rest remains at rest. And the longer an organization has been around the more it resists change. In this show we will be examining the Catholic Church as an example, rich in tradition and ritual which anchors many to people to their faith in an ever-changing world. As an institution it relies heavily on volunteers who work for free and we are often reminded as volunteers to submit to authority. My guest today is Dr. Kevin Cummings, a retired dentist after 40 years in private practice and from 1988 until 2012, he was the team dentist for the Kansas City Chiefs. Today he is a  Catholic Church Deacon in the Kansas City area leading a new Order he helped establish called Deacons of Hope which Provides dignified housing and support for moms in need.He wrestled with institutional inertia for several years before finally succeeding in creating a new Order in the Catholic Church which helps unwed and homeless mothers have an alternative to Planned Parenthood. The Holy Spirit nudges us all, sometimes for decades until we at last act on the purpose he has given us and helps us achieve God's will through His power through us!A very encouraging episode!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with the Olympic Spirit

My guest in this episode is Bruce Wawrzyniak. Bruce has had a lengthy career in sports including ten years working for a National Hockey League team, three years as VP/Public Relations at the League office for the National Lacrosse League and then worked for ten-and-a-half years in the Olympic Movement. Today, Bruce is a Publicist / PR Professional, Podcaster, Author, Speaker, Blogger and specializes in Sports & Entertainment with a radio show called Catholic Sports Radio and a podcast called Now Hear This Entertainment. Our wrestling match topic is the pursuit of a "winning edge" in Olympic sports. It often creates immense pressure to seek advantages that go beyond training and natural talent, sometimes leading athletes and teams to cross the line from legal innovation into unethical, or illegal, practices. In the high-stakes environment of the Olympics, where centuries of effort can be decided by a fraction of a second, the temptation to gain an edge is constant. This temptation manifests in several ways:Doping and Chemical Enhancement: Athletes may be tempted by performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) to improve strength, stamina, or recovery, despite strict testing by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).Technological and Equipment Manipulation: Teams often push the boundaries of regulations with "sartorial" or equipment changes. Examples include modifying Judo gis to be stiffer or shorter, using baby oil to evade measurements, or developing advanced, low-drag swimsuits."Gamesmanship" and Mental Tactics: Athletes may use psychological tactics, such as breaking an opponent's rhythm, faking injury, or creating artificial delays to alter momentum.Bending the Rules: In some cases, athletes look for gray areas in the rulebook, attempting to "bend" rules without technically "breaking" them to get an advantage. Bruce and I discuss these challenges for not only the individual athlete but the team and even the nation they represent in some of the more famous examples where ESPN has even dedicated a 30 of 30 episode to them.We cover Ben Johnson the sprinter from Canada in 1988, Marion Jones the U.S. track athlete who lost five Olympic medals for steroid use in 2010, and even the Spanish national basketball team in the 2000 Sydney Paralympics. We also discuss NFL issues like "deflategate" with Tom Brady and the Houston Astros sign stealing scandal. You can check out Bruce's show at www.catholicsportsradio.net  Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

The Super Bowl of Self Control

It’s early February and we are right smack in the middle of Championship Football Season! College is decided and its Seattle vs New England in the upcoming Super BowlCongrats to Curt Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers on their undefeated season of 16-0 and the school’s first football national championship.  The game had some print dedicated afterwards to the officiating and no calls on some seemingly cheap shots on IU QB Fernando Mendoza. We don’t ever think much about the “officials” in our lives do we?They make sure the rules are followed and strictly enforced and their best day is when we never notice them.Have you ever thought about what is required to become a major college or NFL official?Certainly, all of us have seen multitudes of sideline shots with a head coach mouthing foul words and stalking the poor official whose job it is to be the side judge and stand right in front of each team’s bench the entire game. You know what it takes???Galatians 5:22 calls it fruit of the spirit – and self-control is in extremely short supply these days!Today my guest is a man with a tremendous resume of officiating experience from Texas High School through Division 1 College, NFL, and even a booth replay official.  There’s nothing like hearing some stories from a guy who was on the field with the players and in the booth with the announcers so strap in for a great ride.Tommy Moore welcome to Wrestling with the Inner Man! Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling with the Idolatry of AI

Wrestlers, I don't often do solo episodes but sometimes I have more that I want to express as my personal view and this episode is one of those times. The stock market darling for all of 2025 was Nvidia and all things related to AI holdings.  For the first two weeks of this year I have consumed content related to AI that stirred my inner man and made me more aware of the wrestling match I am experiencing over it.This episode connects the dots through each of these stories:·      ChatGPT commercials aimed at young men·      Physical AI in large machines or mining of our health records·      Peggy Noonan’s theory on America losing its melody·      Russian disinformation and denial to sew division within the U.S.·      AI bias skewing outcomes and creating environmental harmThe question put to all of us is: "Are we fully examining the potential unintended consequences of rushing headlong into the AI world?"It seems like it's becoming our new idol and at the end of this episode I cover two stories from history as cautionary tales.  No matter what your opinion is about AI this episode might be a great one to investigate so that you can step back and see the forest not just  the trees and consider your own personal philosophy about this tsunami heading right for all of us.You also might want to head back to a previous episode I did with Dr Wallace Henley on his book titled "Who Will Rule The Coming 'Gods'?: The Looming Spiritual Crisis Of Artificial Intelligence" That episode is titled "The Moral Hazard of AI"Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Asking for Help

How would you like to have a job where everyone you serve is having the worst day of their life?? That is the everyday truth of a career as a first responder; the police, fire, and EMS folks who we call on our worst days.If it hasn’t really sunk in yet, let me give you a few more specific examples:How about a traumatic death, a murder or suicide, where organ donor decisions must be made? How about the death of a child due to a pool drowning or a neglect or abuse situation?Or how about having to kill a criminal at a scene before he kills you (mass shootings)? On a previous episode recently, I had the Chaplain from Camp Hope on the show to talk about veterans suffering with PTSD, something we are all more familiar with from news and PR campaigns to assist them.  But we hear almost nothing about the PTSD of first responders or ways to help them cope with it.This show is going to shed much more light on these people and their wrestling match with asking for help.My guest is Richard Cary, a Fire Chief for 20 years in a volunteer fire department as well as working as a licensed paramedic. He also served his local community in a 39-year part-time law enforcement career as a Master Peace Officer. Give this episode a listen and be grateful for the people who respond when we need them on our worst days.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Lost Fatherhood

As men, the closest we get to participate in creation as image bearers of God is fathering a child.  It is a gigantic moment in any man’s life, regardless of age, when he learns that he has gotten a woman pregnant. It is a moment of overwhelming joy for married couples who might have been struggling to have children. It can be a moment of mixed feelings for a married couple who thought they were through having children only to learn they have been blessed again with the “oops baby” perhaps a little later in life than they were expecting. It can be downright terrifying to a young man, perhaps still a teenager himself, who became sexually active outside of marriage and never considered the outcome of a possible pregnancy.Back in 2000 there was a very popular song by a band named “Third Eye Blind” called “10 Days Late” with lyrics describing what goes on in a guy’s mind when faced with an unexpected pregnancy. Here are a few of the lines from that song:I’m in trouble now and it cannot waitShe’s ten days lateBoy, your life got complicatedGive me a minute to figure out my state…..My guest for this show is Greg Mayo, the award-winning author of Almost Daddy: The Forgotten Story and its companion 12-Step recovery guide for healing after abortion. His work centers on helping men find hope, healing, and a restored relationship with God.As we celebrate the most important birth in history and consider all those fathers who lost their sons to Herod's edict, let's take time to consider our full role in the creation of new life in this episode.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Family Estrangement

We all so long for the Norman Rockwell holiday gathering at Christmas, both parents and even grandparents seated with obedient children, heads bowed around an abundant table or cheerfully opening gifts around a Christmas tree. But the truth is that most families today experience everything from anxiety to sorrow or grief over family member estrangements making the holidays a painful reminder of how far our reality is from the desired state. One of the problems causing such estrangement is PTSD in the Veteran community.  In fact, The Veterans Health Administration estimates that 44 veterans take their own lives daily, a tragedy indeed for the men and women who fought for our freedom. Now before you tune out thinking this show is a downer, let me tell you that we are here to talk about a place called Camp Hope and the redemption and restoration almost 16,000 combat veterans have found through their outreach and programs since its founding in 2012.My guest today is Billy Graff whose full time job is Chaplain and Clinical Director at Camp Hope for the PTSD Foundation of America.  Listen to how Camp Hope redeems families and fathers! Here's a link to their website: www.ptsdusa.orgSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Giving Thanks

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you genuinely wrestled with being thankful?  Maybe even at this time of year?Perhaps after being laid off at work like many people are experiencing today due to AI? Or maybe it’s just the tyranny of inflation and falling behind on rising expenses?Or possibly you're a federal employee impacted by the recent government shutdown? Or it could be something much worse like a life-threatening cancer diagnosis? I’m happy to welcome back the Chaplain of the Capitol Commission of Louisiana, Dr Michael Sprague who also wrote a book titled “Disaster: Betting the Farm on God in Life’s Storms.” In it he relates his personal experience in living through Hurricane Katrina in August of 2005.  Earlier this year, he experienced another challenging storm, an aggressive form of prostate cancer diagnosis. In this episode Dr Sprague walks us through his diagnosis, treatment, and initial recovery process and how he found ways to be grateful for the many fresh blessings he encountered along his journey.  He also gives us a peek into House Speaker Mike Johnson's background in the state of Louisiana and why we should be thankful to have such a man of integrity leading our nation in the House of Representatives.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Teachability

Proverbs 1:5 says “Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.”In God’s economy, wisdom is never static; it is always expanding. Even the wise must “increase in learning.” Which means that maturity is not marked by arrival but by continual openness to correction and instruction.  The mark of a true disciple is not how much he knows but how much he is willing to keep learning!  Jonathan Edwards once said, “The man who thinks he has sufficient knowledge shows his ignorance.”  Pride is a ceiling that blocks growth, while humility is the soil where wisdom takes root.  As long as we draw breath, we remain students in God’s classroom. Death, not pride, is graduation.Willingness to learn…….now there is a wrestling match that many of us are having near daily, but we seldom seem to discuss much!  That is until today!Bryan Hurlbutt was a keynote speaker at a conference I attended last month and delivered a terrific message on untaught men and teachability.  He was born and raised in upstate New York, received his bachelor’s degree in religious education from Davis College in Johnson City, New York, and his master’s degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. His doctorate of ministry from Talbot School of Theology focused on how worldview, philosophy, and culture relate to the local church, which culminated in the release of his first book, Tasty Jesus: Liberating Christ from the Power of our PredilectionsYou can learn more about him and his church Lifeline Community at www.lifelinecommunity.comSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling with A Career in Politics

After four years as a state representative, eight years as a state senator, and ten years as the Comptroller of Public Accounts for the State of Texas, my friend and guest Glenn Hegar, began his new position as Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System on July 1st 2025.  On July 4th, Kerville Texas experienced one of the most devastating floods and loss of life in Texas history!  And with eight state agencies in addition to the twelve universities under his purview, Chancellor Hegar had to mobilize the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Texas Forest Service (for the significant debris removal needs) before he had even warmed the chair in his new position. Then, just two months later, on September 19th Mark Welsh resigned as President of the flagship campus of Texas A&M University in College Station amid controversy over the firing of a professor teaching transgender ideology in a children's literature course.Perhaps more than any other vocation, a career in politics is a constant wrestling match.  Today, it seems to be just as vigorous within one's own party as with the opposition due to our dysfunctional primary system giving the extremists in both political parties outsized weight in the prioritization of platforms.Chancellor Hegar is one of the good guys who has spent his life in service to the people of Texas. In this episode we discuss his decision to leave elective office for this opportunity to positively influence the next generation of Texans. As Glenn put it, "to give them the tools, the education, and the values they need to lead."Tune in and learn about the Chancellor's role, a very big job with an annual budget of $8.1 billion and Glenn's vision to help address the tremendous growth of both business and population in our state.  We also discuss wrestling with the politics of the recent federal government shutdown, the nationwide search for the next President of the College Station campus, and the impact that NIL, the transfer portal, and TV contracts have had on the football program and the "brand" of Texas A&M which we both hold so dear.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Belief

Many of the most intellectually gifted people in this world struggle with true belief in something as simple as genuine faith. The analytical training always asks another question seeking proof.  And I can't think of many things worse that what a good old Garth Brooks country song says, "standing outside the fire."Some folks stand at the threshold of belief like at a doorway to freedom.  It's wide open and they only have to walk through it but something stops them.... doubt and whispering suggestions.  I have been there myself.  It's called a stumbling block, placed exactly there by an adversary that does not want you to go in.And Doug's stumbling block was the big "why" question.  "If there is a God and He is good, why does He allow so much suffering in this world?"If anyone reading this is uncertain about faith in Jesus Christ as our risen Lord and Savior, please, please, please listen to this long storytelling episode.  Just give it a chance.  One beggar telling another where to find bread. That is Doug Sharp's story.Doug's vivid details and campfire hypnotic storytelling string together a series of unvarnished confessions and incredulous events that your long drive somewhere will feel like sitting on the porch with a war veteran, only in this case the war story is spiritual .Fast food sound bite lovers need not tune in.  This is a delightfully chewy one.But in this world of so much uncertainty with deep fakes and AI making us more suspicious of everything, don't our souls starve for a moment like Doug had where he was provided CERTAIN knowledge directly from our Lord? One small correction needs to be made in reference to his favorite bible verse, it is  Revelation 3:20 and not Romans 3:20 as misstated in the recordingSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Isolation

Are you the kind of guy who retreats to the cave of isolation like a bear when you get wounded? So many of us do exactly that and then choose to self-medicate to numb our pain with all manner of vices which, in the end, only compound our problems and our wounds.Or we simply stuff them so far down that we never properly process them. One of my mentors, Robert Lewis, says that a real man looks back on his past.  It’s the first step to becoming an authentic man. But many of us have never done this. The deep things of our past are often buried away. But the reality is that unaddressed wounds become unfinished business. We hedge, dodge, and compensate until our whole way of living is shaped by the wounds we’ve ignored.Sure, we all like recounting our triumphs and thrills.  But few of us take the time to analyze our past in a way that helps us truly understand ourselves. Do you really know what past experiences and realities make you the person you are today? Do you know what drives you? What shapes your image of manhood and self?  Until a man unpacks his past and deals with the themes and pain that reside there, he can never be an authentic man.  As the saying goes, the unexamined life is not worth living.Well, there is nothing like 83 days ALONE in the frigid, predator-filled environment of the Mackenzie River Delta near Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Canada, north of the Arctic Circle to do a little self-examination.  And that is exactly what my guest today, Timber Cleghorn,  did as the runner up to the winner on season 11 of the ALONE show on the History Channel.  The season tested the participants' physical, mental, and emotional resilience against extreme temperatures, dangerous wildlife like wolves and bears, and intense isolation.Timber's website is: www.timbercleghorn.comSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling with a New Season of Life

We are entering a new school year and football season here in September where everyone begins anew with an undefeated season! But just as fall follows summer, not all seasonal changes are a fresh start.  Most are mileposts for transitions dictated by God’s timetable like rings on a tree stump.Take me for instance, I reach a milestone this September myself by becoming Medicare eligible. And like those other markers, it creates some feelings which are good while others give us pause for reflection or even concern. In my illustration, I like the fact that my health insurance is more secure but my age reminds me that I am much more likely to be needing it soon as well. In this episode Tom Douthit, Executive Director of Toolbox Ministries talks about his wrestling match with a new season in his life and career.Toolbox Ministries mission is to help men in the marketplace know and follow Jesus and to help them move beyond success into significance. You can learn more about Toolbox by visiting their website at www.toolboxministries.com They meet in the following seven cities: Houston (5 locations), Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Lubbock, College Station, Frisco, Atlanta GA, Guadalajara Mexico Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With Intergenerational Relationships

Besides your father, did you have a scoutmaster, teacher, coach, or pastor play a vital role in your upbringing and manhood development?Perhaps it was a grandfather or uncle? In our diaspora society today, we are often moving around and away from extended family to go off to college, pursue careers, or enter military service. But for most of human history it wasn't like this!In fact, up until the early 1900's and the advent of the industrial revolution, we were primarily an agrarian culture globally.  We grew up farming with our fathers or acting as apprentices daily to whatever his trade was such as blacksmithing or carpentry.BetterMan CEO Dr Chris Harper shares his passion in this episode about wrestling with intergenerational relationships, especially for the multitudes of young men today who grew up in single parent or absent father homes. Think of the 2003 movie Secondhand Lions with Robert Duvall and Michael Caine. How do they fill the holes once they are adults? How do they unpack their baggage and find healing for their wounds? How do they define healthy positive manhood? It takes an older man!Tune in and hear our discussion about this extremely important topic and discover ways to overcome the awkwardness in seeking and finding a mentorLearn more about Harp and BetterMan at www.betterman.com or visit his blog on Substack titled "the good trouble blog"Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With Lethal Force

Summer is a season where temperatures and tempers can run hot!  And August is typically the hottest month of all, often called the “dog days of summer.”  This also means that our law enforcement officials across the country must work a bit harder keeping the peace.  We see more and more film clips on the news of people attacking and ambushing uniformed officers. In fact, last year over 100 officers were killed in the line of duty, 104 to be exact. My guest today, Dave Wareham, has a BS in Administration of Justice from Penn State University and an MBA from California Coast University and had a long career in the State of California in law enforcement in both a County Sheriff’s office and as a Chief of Police for the City of Filmore.   During his career Dave was awarded a medal of valor twice and was involved in an active shooter situation back on August 3rd, 2003 in Thousand Oaks California at the police station headquarters. In this episode Dave shares his first-person story about having to take the life of the shooter in that situation and how he felt supernatural protection and comfort amidst the chaos of the moment to do what he had to do. He also discusses the psychiatric protocols required for officers and their families following an event like this to give us a fuller picture of what they go through.Wrestling with lethal force is something that most of us never have to think about hopefully, but we should pause to appreciate and consider what it might be like for the people who put their lives on the line every day as uniformed officers sworn to serve and protect, even to the point of lethal force.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With Success

It seems that almost daily we read stories in the headlines about celebrities, politicians, and even preachers who are destroyed by rapid or overwhelming success.  P. Diddy Combs is the most notable recent one. It may not be covered in the news or on television, but success has ruined many people for a very long time, dating all the way back to biblical times. In fact, one of the most familiar scripture verses to even secular people is Proverbs 16:18Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.No one is immune to the belief that our success is all of our own doing or that somehow we are above other people to a point where the rules no longer apply to us.It can be a hard lesson and success is something that many people actually have a very hard time wrestling with.My guest today is David Nolde, someone who indeed wrestled with success and found himself in a situation like Job, richly blessed, then suddenly lost almost everything, and only through the love of a strong Christian woman has been slowly restored with a much humbler spirit and personal relationship with Christ.Today, I’m experimenting with a two guest format because Opal Handy’s role in David’s restoration has been so significant that we need to hear from both of them to get the full story of success followed by a tremendous fall but then led to restoration through spiritual means. It's an amazing story!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling With the "Wait" of the World

Summer is a season when many young people have the opportunity to experience a mission trip to see the need of a hurting world up close and perhaps for the first time in person. It can be life altering in some cases and certainly a lasting reminder to count the blessings we all take for granted most of the time. Both within the U.S. and around the world there are plenty of people that need to not only experience the body of Christ serving and ministering to their urgent needs but also to hear the good news of the gospel for the very first time.In this episode my guest is Omar Garcia, Missions Pastor at Kingsland Baptist Church where Kim and I are members.  Kingsland is rather unusual in its generosity toward missions and its mission focus with 17% of the total budget dedicated to Missions.  Omar has been a passionate servant leader for our programs and has seen the total giving grow to over $40 million in his 20 years on staff in this capacity.  A remarkable figure! However, Omar continues to have an extreme passion to reach people all over the world who haven’t ever heard the Gospel.  His sense of urgency makes his wrestling match much more noble than most of us with more selfish motives.  He wrestles with the weight of the world spelled both W-E-I-G-H-T and W-A-I-T.Here are a few resources you may want to check out after listening to Omar in this episode:  GoBeyond.blog ExploreTexas.blog BibleTeaching Notes.blogSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling With the Reality of Death

There is an old saying that goes: “The only two certain things in life are death and taxes”Well, we know for sure that death will one day greet us all thanks to the fall in the garden. It’s an uncomfortable topic, especially as we approach its threshold. Some of might die suddenly and unexpectedly, even while we enjoy good health.  But many of us are on a slow march of decline both physically and mentally that gives us plenty of time to reflect upon our lives and relationships before we meet our Maker. There is an incredible service known as Hospice which helps people make this final journey in the most dignified and spiritual way.  Some services come to patients in their homes and others may be admitted to facilities which have the staff and medical equipment to care for multiple patients simultaneously. My guest today has served these people on their last mile in these facilities by singing gospel tunes to both the patients and their families for over four years.  He has sung for nursing homes for fifteen years as well. And through these experiences the Lord lead him to write a brief book titled “Hospice Hymns: Touching Stories of Musical Therapy at Hospice Facilities”His name is Ed Kinsey, a Memphis born Elvis lover whose father was a welder at the Army Depot. When that facility was closed, they moved to Granite City, Illinois, where after high school he received an associate degree in law enforcement. He then began a career as a policeman in the small town of Sparta Illinois until a shooting incident on May 26, 1989 at 3:05 AM changed his life.  This is an episode about transformation for Ed and keeping his promise to serve the Lord after being spared that night so long ago.  We read some excerpts from his book that are quite moving in how he helped those individuals and families confront the reality of death and to meet those waiting to help guide them through the portal to heaven!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With Feeling Worthless

Haven't every single one of felt totally worthless at some point in our lives? Some may feel this way constantly or have for a very long time. It is a pit of despair, a quagmire of quicksand that steals our self worth and the intrinsic value we all have as creatures made in His image.  And most of the time the Accuser is right there, whispering in our head, confirming our worst feelings in attempt to arrest any effort we could have in glorifying God.Imagine you are a child with a severe stuttering problem.  The ridicule and shaming is cruel and relentless.  And my guest today grew up in that exact situation. His father was a con artist and pathological liar, so he never heard the truth and was forced to move frequently as his family's welcome was worn out time after time. And with each relocation he had to suffer the humiliation all over again of the other kids making fun of his severe stuttering. He was convinced that he was unworthy of anything good.  Things like finding a wife or having kids felt out of reach when you basically don’t talk. But that is not the end of his story, or yours either, if you are feeling worthless these days!My guest for this episode is Paul Stege, a humble man who is living an example of a life surrendered to God. He’s no celebrity and not famous.  He is a truck driver who has been driving the night shift for UPS between Texas' major cities for over fifteen years now.  But what a servant he has been for the Lord!  He has provided over 1.3 million bibles, FOR FREE, to people who need to be introduced to God's living word.If there is only one episode you ever listen to of this podcast, let it be this one because of the power of his testimony! You can reach Paul at [email protected] us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With the Great Commission

Father’s Day is a day when we all try to express our appreciation to our fathers, no matter how old we are. And one of the best ways to do that is to do what he has asked or trained us to do.It should be so with our Heavenly Father as well! And Matthew 28:19-20, which is known as “The Great Commission” issues this command as Jesus' last words to his disciples:Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.Two episodes ago I had Dr Timothy West as my guest to discuss “Don’t Give Up on the Church” because over the last twenty-five years 40,000,000 Americans have stopped going to church, creating what has been called The Great Dechurching, the largest concentrated change in church attendance since the Civil War.I wanted to explore this further with Tim’s longtime friend Bob Van Der Ploeg who has done some very interesting research of his own on the Jesus Model of the early church vs what most churches today are using as their model which clearly is not working very well.Bob has been a consultant and trainer for FellowshipOne for the last 16 years and is now CEO of a new business venture called Disciple Technologies which develops tools to help churches better manage their disciple-making efforts and activities.  As a technical dude he decided to query ChatGPT on our wrestling match for this episode and we present the results with ChatGPT as our second "guest"!I believe those experimenting or familiar with ChatGPT will find this episode quite fascinating!  Check it out for yourself and let me hear your feedback. You can lear more about Bob's company by visiting his website at:www.discipletechnologies.netSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling With God's Plans vs My Plans

Hey Gen Z folks!  This episode is especially for you!Did you wake today thinking “I’m going to take on the world and chart my own course of rugged individualism?” It is the American way! However, we often find out very quickly that it might not be God’s way for us and He seems to prevail in about…100% of these situations.Today I am so excited to have my “listener prototype” as my guest.Nick Hartzler is a class of ‘23 Texas A&M graduate in Agricultural Economics. At 24 years old and now two years out of school he has been iterating through a series of experiments trying to find his true calling and vocation. Except he has recently had a major setback.  Does this sound familiar to any of my other young listeners out there??You are the generation besieged by a pandemic among other significant path alterations.Nick has been brave enough to accept my invitation to come on the podcast and talk about his unfinished business and more importantly how he has leaned into his faith and is trusting in the Lord as he navigates his path.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Don't Give Up on the Church; Wrestling With Cynicism

The recent death of Pope Francis and the process to select a successor captures the headlines across the world as “The Vatican” iconically represents what many less vigorous believers think of as “The Church”My guest, Dr Timothy West, works full-time as a Senior Ministry Consultant for NL Moore & Associates, a firm dedicated to guiding churches through senior leadership transitions, particularly the placement of lead pastors. Prior to this role Tim served in multiple roles as lead or founding pastor himself and also did a stint “down under” in Australia as a missionary and church planter. In this episode we discuss what we both feel is an extremely important problem and urge every listener out there “Don’t Give Up on the Church!” the title of this episode. Every serious discussion begins with a problem definition or statement. Ours is from a recent article published by BARNA titled “Men Are Not Villians: Winning the Church Back to Men” Here's an excerpt outlining the situation demographically:40,000,000 Americans have stopped going to church in the past 25 years. We are experiencing what is being called the Great Dechurching, the largest concentrated change in church attendance since the end of the Civil War. In 1937, when Gallup began measuring church affiliation, 73% of Americans belonged to a house of worship. Today, it is less than 47%, the first time in history that the majority of Americans do not belong to a church. The Hartford Institute for Religion recently noted that the median sized Evangelical church in America had 137 people attending in 2000. By 2021, that number had shrunk to 65. What’s worse—on any given Sunday, those 65 people are largely made up of women. Men, in large scale have abandoned the Church. Today, more than ever, men are missing from the Church. If you're interested in hearing more about the current state and what Tim and I believe might be great remedies to improve these figures, particularly among men, give it a listen!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With Blending a Family

Mother’s Day is right around the corner coming up on May 11th! Ahead of this day honoring mothers and families, I thought it might be a timely topic to discuss a wrestling match that none of us ever wanted to have, that of blending a family. It’s one none of us ever wanted because it means that, for whatever reason, our first marriage has ended and with divorce rates around 50% it means that half of us could be in a position to consider blending a family at some point in the future.  We also know that divorce isn’t the only reason some marriages end.  There are many people who have lost a spouse to death.  That was the case for my guest Chad Brignac.  Chad has over thirty years of experience in the construction industry and is a founding partner of the  John Maxwell Team. He specializes in leadership and strategic consulting. Influenced by his blended family journey, Chad is an advocate for compassionate leadership, intentional personal growth and development, and accountability structures. He and his wife, Jdele, have coauthored a book titled “Blend Don’t Break” which offers a forensic look backward at some of the pitfalls they encountered as they tried to build a blended family.  This episode features rare vulnerability by a man committed to helping others who may be wrestling with blending a family.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Fires, Floods, and Freezes: Wrestling with Risk Management

The genesis of this episode began with my utter exasperation shopping for new homeowners insurance after receiving a 100% increase in my premium over last year's rate.  As I examined the root causes of the rate hike, I realized that I just might need to re-evaluate my entire risk management mindset. The California wildfires in January, recent floods in Kentucky and Tennessee, and the Uri Winter Storm in Texas a few years ago have put this topic front of mind for many of us.It begs the question, "What do you place your faith in?"My guest for this Good Friday episode is Dr Michael Sprague who is the Chaplain for the Louisiana state legislature.  Michael also is an author and wrote a book after experiencing Hurricane Katrina and it full fury living in New Orleans as it struck.  The title of his book is: "Disaster: Betting the Farm on God in Life's Storms"We discuss the concept of brokenness vs the kingdom of me, the dangers of becoming too comfortable, and answering our calling, regardless of risks, by putting our faith in God and His plan for us.We close with a strong message of encouragement for all of our listeners who may on their own road to Mount Moriah, as Abraham was with Jacob, remaining faithful and trusting that God will provide the ram in the thicket just in time for each of us!Michael posts daily on both LinkedIn and Facebook and has a website at: www.capitolcommissionlouisiana.orgSend us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling With a Grim Diagnosis

The first official day of Spring was March 20th and we are entering Holy Week with Palm Sunday this weekend.  Both help us to blossom ourselves both spiritually and physically so I thought this episode should be one that promises hope and healing.Just like Christ's death on the cross brought despair to his followers, a grim diagnosis for one's own health can also be a dark place.  It is how we respond to such bad news that demonstrates our faith or perhaps lack thereof. My good friend Dr Austin Ruiz is a man of small physical stature, standing about five feet five inches tall but is a true GIANT in my eyes for his incredible faith and perseverance in facing not one, but two separate death defying illnesses. His story is one the should inspire all of us!Dr Ruiz is a retired ophthalmologist from Harker Heights Texas and serves on the Brazos River Authority Board of Directors with me as a governor's appointee. In this episode he relates his two year battle with leukemia through five treatment regimens and his wrestling match with Satan himself trying to get him to simply give up.  He called upon the Holy Spirit and was rescued by him in this spiritual warfare.A year after his remission and full recovery from leukemia, he was hit by another very grim diagnosis, sepsis.  This battle ended up costing him both of his lower legs to amputation but he is walking today on his prosthetics and has never given up.  What an example of faith he offers us all!  This is a not to be missed show!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling with School Choice Part 2

In our last show my guest, Travis Koch, and I began our discussion about the wrestling match many parents are facing with school choice. We also discussed the book “The Anxious Generation” by Jonathan Haidt.  The subtitle of his book is “How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.”  His primary diagnosis of the root cause was outdoor play has been replaced with screen play. In today’s Part 2 episode, we dig deeper into the political wrestling match taking place today in the Texas Legislature.  A House bill and a different Senate bill on school choice have both already been passed in each chamber.  Now the two versions must be hashed out in a conference committee and sent to Governor Abbott for his signature creating a new law that will take effect this fall.Travis walks us through what the new law will likely mean to parents who have children in private schools, home schooling programs, or public schools today.  He also highlights what his new school, West Christian Prep, offers to address the concerns of boys in particular.Another episode packed with great information to help your with your wrestling match in this arena. Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Wrestling With School Choice Part 1

Parents throughout the United States experienced an unintended consequence from the COVID pandemic from 2020 to 2022: an up close look at their children's education curriculum and teaching materials.  And they were shocked!Across the country children fell way behind and most are still struggling to catch up, especially boys, due to the culture and gender wars that have exacerbated the problems in education not only in K-12 but also in higher education with all of the DEI initiatives placing higher emphasis on labels than qualifications. The wave of discontent, concern, and outright fear has washed across the entire nation state by state. School choice has become a major issue and many states have already passed new laws that allow parents more educational funding for options like home schooling and private schools. In Texas our Governor has made school choice a top priority and campaigned against candidates in his own party's primaries to defeat those obstructing school choice legislation in our state. The confluence of all of these events presents a significant wrestling match for parents on school choice.  How we choose to educate our children will have far-reaching consequences and with so much disinformation out there surrounding the money issues facts are difficult to discern. Wisdom is needed. My guest today,  retired USAF Colonel Travis Koch, has been on the show before in January of 2023 as we discussed the book Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men.  At the time Travis was the Passport to Leadership Director and Head Boys Lacrosse Coach at Houston Christian High School.Since that time he was given a dream by the Holy Spirit to start a new all boys school with an all male faculty in West Houston which is coming to fruition this fall. The school is called West Christian Prep (WCP) and will begin with grades 3-5.In this first episode we set the stage and diagnose the problem to plot where we are today.  We close this episode with things that parents can do in their homes first to begin to correct the problem, and we are focusing on boys here.In the next episode we will discuss the two bills in the Texas House and Senate which have already been passed (HB3 and SB2) and how they appear to be reconciling those two different versions to put a bill on the Governor's desk to sign into law this year.  And finally Travis will walk us through how West Christian Prep was created and is working on the "faces and spaces" to offer new and better choices for Texas parents.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Covetousness vs Contentment

The first quarter of every new year often has a heavy focus on finances, whether it be personal or business.  Our national debt is north of $36 trillion, an inconceivable figure! We are all feeling the pinch of inflation as it erodes our buying power and savings.Basically, at every level of our society from individuals, to families, to communities and even our country we have a HUGE problem.  It is our covetousness, always wanting more than we can afford. My guest for this episode is my very own pastor, Dr Ryan Rush of Kingsland Baptist Church in Katy, Texas. In this episode we go to scripture for wisdom about how to be content with what we have. We also discuss the warnings found in scripture about the ruin and destruction that covetousness brings.  1 John 2:16 gives the three primary tools in devil's playbook to temp us: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.  We want to feel things. We want to have things. And we want to be things.Pastor Rush offers two simple words to combat these: gratitude and generosity! This is one sensational episode that truly is for every person out there breathing!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    A Diet That Works

My guest for this episode is my good friend Pastor Michael Tadlock, Senior Pastor at Bethel Church in Jennings LA. Michael shares his miraculous healing story after contracting COVID at the end of 2020 which led to a severe bout of pancreatitis that almost took his life and required a 40 day hospitalization. But as Paul Harvey used to say, "And now, the REST of the story!"After recovering from pancreatitis Michael was cruising along with life going quite well and then was diagnosed with diabetes as a lingering consequence of his earlier illness.  And even pastors get angry with God sometimes folks.Michael recounts his wrestling match with his inner man about where this anger was really coming from, pride.  After some deep self examination work and prayer he was able to experience true transformation in how he could better give God his best in every area of his life! It's a terrific story you won't want to miss as we all consider the importance of proper diets at this time of year!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Revolutions Within's Spiritual Provision #3 - New Disposition

I am so pleased to announce that this is the 100th episode of Wrestling With the Inner Man to kick off 2025!We are doing a four part series on spiritual provisions Pastor Dwight Edwards covers in his book book Revolution Within with this show as the third installment.  The previous two provisions we discussed were new purity and new identity. The third provision, our new disposition, explains how the indwelling Holy Spirit makes us genuinely want to be obedient to the will of God.  The premise goes like this: anything written on our hearts becomes instinctive, not requiring conscious thought, somewhat like birds knowing when and how to migrate south for the winter. No more striving to conquer life on our own terms under our own power. These instincts are similar to hunger and thirst for our survival, only in this case the soul in every single one of us thirsts for a love that cannot be diminished by our performance and a hunger for making a difference in this world which cannot be erased.  So unconditional love and a desire for impact is what truly drives us all and these can only be met by having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. It's a fascinating conversation with Dwight that I'm sure you will enjoy!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

    Wrestling with Submitting to Authority

Wrestling with submitting to authority is a very common issue for most men but especially in adolescence when we are trying to rebel in order to define our own personality in the breaking away from our parents' orbit. Honestly, it has been a lifelong struggle for me as it also represents a struggle with pride. My guest for this episode is Chaplain Richmond E. Shedding the Identities of Addiction Part 2

In our last episode we covered the identities of addiction which an addict must shed to become a genuine and authentic individual.  In this episode we have successful enterpreneur Greg Walker again giving us his unique perspective on shedding identities of addiction, but this time it is the identity of family members and other loved ones who have become enablers or codependents who mean well by rescuing the addict or insulating them from facing the natural consequences of their choices and mistakes. This is something that I am very familiar with myself coming from a family who has had to deal with multiple long term substance and alcohol abuse issues.Ultimately, there is only one relationship that has the power to rescue an addict from his affliction, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and savior.  This is because the wrestling match takes place in the spiritual realm where we mere humans have no power.  Only the supernatural power of Jesus can defeat the evil powers of addiction in this world where Satan rules!Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Addiction has been on the rise in many forms in our digital age with things like gambling and pornography more available than ever and more difficult to resist!Of course alcohol and substance abuse haven't lost any ground either! My guest today is Greg Walker, a lifelong entrepreneur and extremely successful businessman.  Greg grew up in a normal middle-class family raised by his mom and step-father in Greenbelt, Maryland. After opening Zydeco Louisiana Diner in Houston, Texas during his senior year of college, Greg entered the venture capital and private equity worlds (healthcare, film, and real estate).Despite his success, Greg walked through the darkness of addiction, which took him to places he swore he would never go."I have had millions of dollars in the bank and couldn't sleep a wink, and no money in the bank and slept like a baby every single night.  My identity was always in my stuff.....but God never stopped pursuing me and it took what it took for me to totally surrender."Have a listen to his courageous vulnerability discussing how he was able to shed his bogus identities of addiction. In Part 2 we will look at addiction from the enabler or codependent family members who struggle with rescuing their loved ones trapped in addition.Send us Fan MailVisit www.thesavagepath.com for more on David, his book The Savage Path: A Memoir of Modern Masculinity, and the Savage Path Ministries Corp.

Feeling cheated may be one of the most universal human emotions and it is no fun!  Whether it is being "short-changed" literally on a cash transaction, victimized by an unscrupulous ticket scalper with a fraudulent ticket outside your favorite sports venue, or being scammed on a larger scale through an email Phishing scheme we all must maintain daily vigilance to avoid this feeling. My guest today is Kevin D. The subtitle of "Pirate Money" is "Discovering the Founder's Hidden Plan for Economic Justice and Defeating the Great Reset."Kevin also is known as the "the father of the LSV investing movement." LSV refers to investing in Liberty, Security, and Values and is the counter to hypocritical ESG (which has been hijacked to fuel corporate greed, inequality, and globalist tyranny) If you want to learn more about Bitcoin, cryptocurrency, and the federal government's plan for a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) this is a must episode for YOU!
