WRST Black History Month Spotlight

Going to the grocery store to buy fruit and vegetables is a common activity for most of us but for many, transportation or access to healthy food choices is limited or non-existent. UWO graduate, Maurice “Mo” Wince is addressing the issue of food insecurity in Milwaukee Wisconsin. 

Students work to building community and a sense of belonging. Meet the leaders of the Black Student Union, African American Studies Club, and Leaders Igniting Transformation as they discuss the challenges on a PWI.

The legacy of astronaut Ronald McNair lives on in the program that helps first-generation college students pursue advanced degrees. Belynda Pinkston, PhD is Program Coordinator of the McNair Scholars Program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She discusses the program at UWO.

The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh has a very extensive calendar of events for Black History Month. African American Studies Program Director, Alphonso Simpson, Jr., PhD is coordinator for the monthlong celebration. Simpson details the programs, organizations,  and departments participating in 2024.

Dr. Shawn Robinson is a leader in the area of Dyslexia and African American Boys. He has numerous academic publications, but his Dr. Dyslexia Dude books may be the most impactful.

College can be tough without support and allyship. Josiah Benjamin talks about how he has adapted and thrived on a predominately White campus.

With controversy surrounding African American studies curriculum in some states, the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is making moves to build a strong AAS department.
