From Wanting to Choosing: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything

Most of us know what we want, or at least we think we do. The question to ask is, are we actually choosing it? There is a world of difference between wanting something and committing to it. In this episode, I explore why so many ambitious people stay stuck in wanting, even when the desire is real, and the direction is clear. Even when they know their current path doesn't feel like their purpose. When I left my corporate career and started building my therapy and coaching practice from scratch, I told myself I could not afford to save any money or give any away. Both turned out to be stories. The moment I chose to do both, even in the smallest possible way, something shifted. That is what choosing does. It changes your sense of being. And your sense of being is what drives your results. It is fear that keeps us in the land of "one day," fear of failure, of making the wrong call, of not being enough. But what if failure is simply learning? What if you are already enough and have nothing to prove? This episode is an invitation to stop waiting and start choosing the life that is already calling to you.

How to Get Clarity When Your Mind Won't Stop

Do you find yourself stuck in your head, turning a decision over and over but getting no closer to knowing what to do? I remember sitting having a set of options open to my after my A-levels. Different universities, different sponsored placements, all of them good. And I couldn't decide. I was in tears, terrified of making the wrong choice, convinced that if I just thought harder, I would find the answer.  We live in a culture that says analytical thinking is key. But trying to think your way to clarity ties you in knots. As Jamie Smart puts it: You - Contaminated Thinking = Clarity. And that contaminated thinking is usually fear. Fear of getting it wrong, fear of regret, fear of being judged. The more we try to think through that fear, the busier our minds get. Clarity is not something we find. It comes to us. Like a 3D image from the 90's Magic Eye patterns, it only appears when you stop forcing it and let your gaze soften. The more you trust that your innate wisdom is there and that you will be okay whatever happens, the more naturally and quickly clarity arrives. If you overthink decisions or struggle to trust your own instincts, this episode will shift how you relate to your own thinking.

Stop Trying to Fix Yourself (It Probably Isn't Working Anyway)

In this episode, I explore why most self-improvement approaches fall short, not because people aren't trying hard enough, but because they're working too far downstream. I use the image of people falling into a river. Most self-help is focused on pulling people out of the water. But what if you went further upstream to understand why they're falling in? When we're caught in a thought-created reality, fighting that thinking with more thinking is like trying to rescue a burnt biscuit. The best baker in the world cannot save it. You start again. We don't need fixing. We have innate well-being already within us. Our minds are self-correcting systems. Like a snow globe, they settle when we stop shaking them. The more we understand how our experience is actually created, the less we try to wrestle with it, and the more naturally clarity, confidence, and peace return. If you've been working hard on yourself and feel like something still isn't clicking, this might be the most useful episode you hear all year.

How I Went From People-Pleasing & Infertility to a Life I Love (Interview)

In this special episode, I'm sharing a full interview conversation recorded in Regent's Park, London, in which I tell my story from the beginning. I talk about growing up as a people-pleaser, always looking for approval from parents and teachers. About how a corporate career built on saying yes to everything eventually left me asking, "where's me in all of this?" About discovering I was infertile, and how that cracked something open and woke me up to how conditional my happiness had become. I share the turning point that changed everything: checking myself into a convent for five days of silence, sitting in front of a barren vegetable patch, and realising I had a blank canvas. A chance to stop living from the outside in and start building a life that was genuinely mine. If you're an ambitious person who's achieved a lot but feels like something is still missing, this conversation is for you.

You Are Not Lacking Confidence (Here's What's Actually Going On)

In this episode, I explore one of the most misunderstood ideas in personal development. I share the true nature of confidence. Watch a baby learning to walk, and you see something remarkable. No fear of failure, no comparison, no self-doubt. Not because they're unusually brave, but because they haven't yet picked up the insecure thinking that gets in the way. We aren't born with innate confidence. We're born with a quieter mind, closer to our true selves. Over time we learn to drown that out with comparison, fear, and other people's judgments and expectations. The formula I share in this episode is simple: Your True Self - Contaminated Thinking =  Innate Confidence. Confidence isn't a feeling you need before you act. It's a feeling you get when you keep honouring and trusting that still, soft voice within and have the courage to act on it. If you're tired of fighting self-doubt and feel like confidence is always just out of reach, this episode will change how you see yourself.

Why Success Can Feel Empty: The Goal Behind The Goal

I remember getting a big promotion at work. The congratulations from colleagues. The excitement of a new challenge and a pay rise. Then, a few days later, walking in on a Monday morning thinking, "Is this it?" The research is clear: reaching your goals, winning the lottery, even having a baby, doesn't fundamentally change how content you feel. You return to your habitual level of happiness. Most of us are simply aiming at the wrong spot. If you've ever worked hard to achieve something and felt a hollow emptiness when you got there, this episode is for you. There's always a goal behind the goal. The promotion, the status, the money, these are the top of the log. Feeling secure, worthy, and whole, that's the bottom. And that's a place to come from, not a place to get to. The emptiness you feel isn't a sign that something is wrong with you. It's a love letter from your soul.

Clarity Within - The Search is Over

If you've been listening since the days of The Fertile Mind, or found me more recently through You Unleashed, this short episode is for you. The podcast has a new name, Clarity Within, and a new strapline: The Search Is Over. In this episode, I explain why, where the show has been, and where it's going. This journey started as a podcast for people navigating the deeply personal experience of fertility. It then opened up to anyone who felt that pull, the sense of striving, achieving, and still feeling like something was missing. That evolution was real, but I didn't explain it to you. Consider this me putting that right. Whatever brought you here, fertility, purpose, confidence, or simply that quiet feeling that there's more to life, you're in exactly the right place. The show hasn't changed. It's just finally found its name. Welcome to Clarity Within.

We look at how this mindset begins in childhood and quietly shapes our relationships, career and confidence. If you are tired of trying to prove your worth, this conversation will help you reconnect with your innate value, shift from lack to abundance, and finally feel at home in yourself.

The Dragon Is Not Real, Breaking Free from Fear

I want to tell you a story, a story about a dragon. It's a story that captures something I see in almost every person I work with, and something I lived myself for years without realising it. We build our lives around protection, chasing money, status, love, approval, because somewhere deep down, we believe there's a dragon coming for us. And the dragon feels completely real. It looks real. It feels real. But what if it isn't? In this episode, I share Michael Neill's powerful dragon story and explore what happens when we start to see that the fear driving so much of our behaviour isn't actually about what we think it's about. I open up about how I hoarded money without realising it, how much of my identity was wrapped up in my job title, and what it felt like when both were stripped away. When you see through the illusion of your insecure thinking, when you really see there's no dragon, something extraordinary happens. The anxiety doesn't just reduce. It dissolves. And in the quiet that follows, you reconnect with something that was always there: clarity, wisdom, and the knowing that you are already safe. You're not scared of what you think you're scared of. You're scared of what you think.

From Good To Great: The 3 Levels of Happiness You Were Never Taught

You've done the work, hit the goals, earned the life, so why does it still feel like something's missing? In this episode, I explore the three levels of happiness through the lens of positive psychology: from chasing pleasure, through achievement, to living with genuine purpose. You'll discover why external success can never create lasting fulfilment, and what it actually means to shift from an outside-in life to an inside-out one. If you're stuck, restless, or quietly wondering is this it? -  this episode is for you.

Find a quiet space, press play, and let this episode do its work.

The Hidden Cost of People Pleasing - And How to Finally Stop

If there were an Olympic medal for people pleasing, I would have won it. In this honest and personal episode, I trace my decades-long habit of becoming whoever I thought others needed me to be, from childhood through my corporate career, and the quiet pain of not knowing who I actually was. I share the insight that changed everything: that self-compassion, not other people's approval, was the missing piece all along. This episode is an invitation to stop living for others and start living from your heart.

  15. 86

Why Thinking Harder Keeps You Stuck (And What to Do Instead)

Most high achievers believe their greatest asset is their ability to think through problems. But what if overthinking is actually what's keeping you trapped? In this episode, I share how I discovered that trying to manage his state of mind through more analysis only made things worse, and introduce a deceptively simple metaphor: the mind works like a snow globe. When you stop shaking it, clarity settles on its own. This episode will change how you relate to your own thoughts.

How to Stop Living the Life You Think You Should - And Come Home to Yourself

After a decade of infertility and a career that never quite felt like mine, I hit a moment of reckoning, and it arrived, unexpectedly, through an encounter with a baby rabbit. In this deeply personal episode, I explore what it means to stop drifting through a life shaped by "should" and to find your way back to who you truly are. If you've ever felt like you're performing your life rather than living it, this episode is a quiet invitation home.

  17. 84

You Are Not Bad or Wrong for How You Feel: Here's What's Really Happening

Do you ever judge yourself for your emotions, or wonder why the people you love seem to react so differently to the same situation? In this episode, I open up about how I used to dismiss my wife's feelings without realising it, and what changed when I understood where emotions really come from. I explore masculine and feminine energy in relationships, why emotions so often create disconnection rather than closeness, and why the path to healing always runs through compassion, not judgment. You are not broken for feeling what you feel.

  18. 83

What If Life Isn't Against You? Einstein's Question That Changed Everything

Einstein once asked whether the universe is friendly, and I believe your answer to that question shapes everything: your relationships, your confidence, your sense of what's possible. In this episode, I trace how my childhood wired me to believe life was harsh and judgmental, and how a gradual shift in that belief changed the texture of my entire experience. What if the universe isn't indifferent or cruel, but actually has your back? What if you are already worthy, exactly as you are?

  19. 82

"I'm Not Good Enough": How to Unlearn the Hidden Beliefs Running Your Life

Most of us are living out beliefs we never consciously chose, thoughts like I'm not good enough, I don't deserve to be happy, or success isn't for people like me. In this episode, I explore how these hidden beliefs quietly run the show, why they feel like facts rather than thoughts, and how even a single insight can begin to unravel them. Whether you're dealing with imposter syndrome, fear of success, or chronic self-judgment, this episode shows you that what was learned can be unlearned.

Why Do I Feel Like Life Is Against Me? Finding Peace When Everything Feels Personal

During our ten-year fertility journey, I felt a deep, burning sense of injustice that life was abandoning me or working against me. In this candid episode, I explore the habit of taking everything personally (from missed opportunities to traffic jams) and the profound shift that came with a different question: what if life isn't personal at all? What if it's simply neutral? This reframe didn't just change how I saw life's difficulties; it led me to a deeper version of myself I hadn't known was there.

Healthy Goals vs Toxic Goals: How to Set Goals That Don't Destroy Your Wellbeing

As a new year begins, most people set goals from pressure, fear, or the quiet feeling that they're not enough yet. In this episode, drawn from the archive, I unpack why some goals actually hold us back, and how goal-setting from the wrong inner state can quietly disconnect us from ourselves. I share a different approach: choosing goals that evoke a powerful way of being, and holding them lightly enough that your self-worth never depends on the outcome. It's not just about what you achieve. It's about who you become along the way.

  22. 79

    The Search for Belonging

In this episode, I open up about my lifelong search for a sense of belonging. From feeling like an outsider at school and university, to people-pleasing in adulthood in hopes of earning love and acceptance, I share how old stories shaped how I saw myself. But the real shift happened when I stopped trying to belong by proving my worth and started reconnecting with the truth of who I am beyond the noise of thoughts and judgments. I discovered that belonging doesn’t come from the outside; it comes from within. From knowing we’re already enough, already loved, already worthy, just as we are.

  23. 78

    The Courage To Listen

In this episode, I reflect on a simple but powerful idea that struck me from a book I was reading: “Do you have the courage to listen?” It made me realise how often we hear only what we want to hear, or what we already know, instead of truly listening with an open heart. I talk about the times I’ve been challenged to listen to uncomfortable truths about myself, my life, and what I truly desire, and how choosing to listen anyway, even when it hurt, has led to growth, healing and deeper connection. This is about stepping out of your head and into your heart, and having the courage to hear what it’s been trying to tell you all along.

  24. 77

    Silencing The Inner Critic

In this episode, I explore the voice many of us live with, the inner critic. I share my own experience of being unknowingly hard on myself, constantly chasing perfection to avoid judgment and earn love. As I became more aware of this critical part of me, I learned that fighting it didn’t help. What made the difference was something far more radical: acceptance. I talk about how compassion, not correction, helped me soften that inner voice, and how imagining that critic as a younger version of myself allowed me to respond with love instead of resistance. If you’ve ever struggled with self-judgment, I hope this episode helps you find a gentler way forward.

  25. 76

    Learning To Be Present

In this episode, I open up about one of the most painful moments in my marriage, when my wife told me she felt lonely in our relationship. That wake-up call helped me see just how much I’d been living in my head, disconnected from the present and the people I love. I share how childhood habits of overthinking became my coping mechanism, and how I’ve been learning to come back to presence, to love, and to life itself. This is a raw and honest reflection on the journey from numbing to feeling, from overthinking to connection, and from fear to freedom. I hope it helps you find more connection to your true self that knows you are OK, and to feel more connected to those you love.

  26. 75

From Emotional Avoidance to Emotional Freedom

What if you’ve been avoiding more than just difficult emotions? In this episode, I share my own journey of expanding my emotional range, from numbing anxiety and flatlining through life to truly feeling the full spectrum of joy, grief, love, and connection. We explore how our relationship with feelings affects our relationships with others and our connection to our true self and innate resources, keeping us stuck in life. Learn how to embrace your emotions without fear or judgment, reconnect with your soul, deepen your wellbeing, and allow life to flow more freely.

  27. 74

    Creating from the Inside-Out

Are you chasing success to feel happy, or creating from a place of happiness? In this episode, we delve into the profound shift from living outside-in to living inside-out. I break down 10 transformative principles that invite you to stop proving your worth and start honouring your soul. This episode is a call to stop striving and start creating from who you really are, complete and whole.

  28. 73

    From Pressure To Presence

Why do we freeze under pressure, even when we care deeply about showing up fully? In this episode, we explore the hidden ways we choke,  at work, in relationships, on stage, and how pressure is often self-imposed fear rooted in overthinking. Drawing from sports, personal growth, and psychology, he invites us to see that high performance isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence. Discover how letting go of pressure and tuning into the moment can unlock your most powerful, authentic self, and release the tension and pressure we are storing in our mind and bodies.

  29. 72

    The Myth of Normal

What if there’s no such thing as normal? In this episode, we explore the stories we carry about not being good enough, our deep drive to conform, the cancer of comparison and how true freedom comes from reconnecting with who we really are. Through reflections, insights, and lived experience, this episode helps you let go of judgment, drop the mask, and discover the peace of simply being you.

  30. 71

Why You Can't Trust Your Feelings

In today’s episode, we’re unpacking a big misunderstanding: that our feelings are a reliable guide to life. What if they’re not? What if fear, doubt, and discomfort don’t need to be fixed or followed, but simply noticed and gently held?  Join me as I explore how to stop letting emotions dictate our decisions and start honouring something deeper, our soul, our truth, our quiet wisdom beneath the noise.

  31. 70

Stop Trying To Control Your Thoughts!

In today’s episode, we’re tackling one of the biggest myths out there, that we can control our thoughts. From caveman wiring to corporate overthinking, I unpack why your thoughts aren’t the problem… but how you relate to them might be. This is an invitation to stop battling your brain and start listening to something deeper, your wisdom, your heart, your soul. If you’ve ever felt trapped by your own overthinking, this one’s for you.

  32. 69

    How To Avoid Regrets

    Be Free of Judgements

Today, I share a personal story that began with a simple conversation and ended with a life-changing realisation about judgment. It’s about uncovering the silent rules we've absorbed, the ways we measure ourselves and others, and how that inner critic quietly shapes our lives. If you’ve ever felt stuck, like you're living life with the wrapper still on, this episode might just help you begin to unwrap the truth of who you really are. Let’s dive in.

With powerful storytelling and raw personal insight, he guides you toward a new relationship with yourself one built on self-acceptance, not external approval. You’ll discover: Why chasing praise keeps you anxious, burnt out, and unfulfilled How validation-seeking begins in childhood and becomes an unconscious habit Why even praise can't fix the "leaky vase" of self-judgment The link between people-pleasing, burnout, and fear of criticism A powerful forgiveness practice to release self-judgment and reclaim your truth This episode is a compassionate call to stop outsourcing your OKness and start living from your own inner knowing.

In this episode, Russell explores the often-overlooked power of trusting your inner voice, the quiet wisdom that lives beneath the noise of your busy mind. Through real-life stories, vulnerable reflections, and transformative client breakthroughs, he unpacks why clarity doesn’t come from thinking harder, but from listening deeper. You’ll discover: Why you struggle to make decisions (and what to do instead) How your mind’s fear-based noise drowns out your truth What it really means to trust yourself even when it doesn’t “make sense” Why short-term discomfort leads to long-term peace How to honour your intuition without needing to justify it This episode is an invitation to stop overthinking and start listening to the wisdom within, the part of you that already knows what’s right.

We explore how we can create with more ease and wellbeing!

ABOUT THIS SHOW

Something’s missing, and you can’t quite put your finger on what it is.You’re ambitious, you’ve worked hard, you’ve done everything right. And yet there’s a quiet restlessness that success hasn’t touched. I know that feeling personally. After ten years of infertility and a career that never felt like mine, I had to learn how to stop chasing happiness from the outside in, and find it from the inside out.I’m Russell Davis, therapist and coach, and each week I share honest conversations, personal stories, and guided experiences to help you cut through overthinking and self-doubt and reconnect with the clarity, confidence, and well-being that’s been inside you all along. This isn’t about coping techniques or self-help hacks. It’s about getting to the root of what’s keeping you stuck, and discovering that the life you want is closer than it feels.New episodes every Tuesday.Get in touch:www.russell-davis.com
