The difference between re-using and recycling was a new understanding for 2TC and so they set out to learn more from others; here are some other adult ideas.

We discussed how to reduce waste at home and after making commitments to change our actions we wondered what actions other people were doing to reduce their waste at home; so we asked around. 

As 2TC students were developing an understanding of the importance of the 3Rs we wondered if other people appreciated the need to reduce, re-use and recycle waste.

 This is a BIG question - what is waste? 2TC students interviewed members of our school community to check people's understanding of waste.

What kind of rubbish did people reuse was the next line of investigation that the roaming reporters followed.  

After the students had gathered information on what people knew, and how they recycled and reused their trash the next important question was if they actually knew where to put their rubbish in school. 

The next team of determined investigators wanted to know what kind of rubbish people recycled. 

The first set of intrepid reporters wanted to know if people had heard about and actually understood the 3 Rs. 

By this point we had answers to our questions. We know more about energy and why we need it but do we know how to save it and why.

Can our world survive without energy? This was the next part of our mission. We wanted to know why everyone was talking about saving energy and so we asked ‘why do we need energy?’

We asked some of our parents what they knew about energy, the different types and ways of saving it because we wanted to look at saving energy outside of school also.

Our mission was to find out what people knew about energy and ways of saving it. So where better to start than the school community and the question “What are different types of energy?’ What do you think - do people know a lot about energy?

Energy - What is it? is a collection of recorded interviews made by Year 2/Grade 1 students at an international school in Thailand. Their objective was to learn by asking questions of other members of the school community about energy. The following entries are progressive audio recordings by the same class of students trying to build an image of energy and its importance to us and our world.
