Why Sean Dempsey No Longer Calls Himself a Libertarian
Sean Dempsey returns to Zipcode Zero for a wide-ranging conversation on the state of American politics and the growing crisis of political tribalism. We discuss why Sean no longer identifies as a libertarian, the fall of Congressman Thomas Massie, foreign policy, government surveillance, artificial intelligence, and the future of the Republican Party. Along the way, we explore whether America's deepest problems are political or cultural, and what it would take to move beyond the increasingly entrenched left-right divide.Show Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

Voices of CPAC
The Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, meets annually, usually in Washington DC, and is a key gathering of conservative policymakers, media and officials from all over the country. Over the last decade it has also become ground zero for the Trump wing of the Republican Party. This year the line-up of speakers included Trump himself, JD Vance, Elon Musk, Steve Bannon, various Republican elites of the MAGA stripe. But CPAC is more than just its speakers, its also its devoted attendees – the thousands of every day activists fly from all over the country to make connections, share ideas and – this year, relish in the restoration of Donald Trump and buz with excitement over what he might do over the next few years.I was interested in talking to those people to learn more about what it is that interests them about trump and what specifically they want to see out of a Trump presidency. I heard a lot of different answers, with consensus on issues like immigration, DEI and humor over Trumpian theatrics. There were also some divisions among attendees, particularly on the topic of Ukraine and Trump’s approach to foreign policy.I found it all fascinating. Whatever one’s views – and mind tend to be more on the left – I think its important and enjoyable to listen to other people’s perspectives and get a better understanding of what inspires their activism. The people I met at CPAC were friendly, chatty and open to sharing their views – and this episode contains excerpts from a range of conversations I had while on the ground. I hope you enjoy the show, if so – please make sure to subscribe and share. Enjoy Show Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

Why Everyone Should Oppose How The Jan. 6 Protesters Were Treated
Today I'm joined by John Strand, a man who participated in the January 6 protests on Capitol Hill. John committed no violence nor was he ever *charged* with any violence. Prosecutors don't dispute that he simply walked in and out of the building that day. For that offense he was facing almost a quarter century in prison. Is that justice?I hope everyone, especially those who are on the political left or otherwise not Trump supporters, will consider this question with an open mind. There was indisputable violence on January 6 and most people can agree those who physically attack another human being should face legal consequences. But for the millions of Americans who have been conditioned to despise January 6 protesters as domestic terrorists or insurrectionists, there is little attention paid to what happened to the hundreds of non-violent protesters that went in and out of the Capitol that day. Many of those protesters were not only charged with misdemeanor offenses, like unlawful entry, but also found themselves facing felony charges that were pulled from 2002 financial accounting law in order to give the Department of Justice the ability to seek up punishment of up to 20 years in prison. No matter what you think of the protesters themselves or what they were protesting, it is important to ask oneself this: For those who were non-violent, should they face 20 years in prison? And would then fairly apply this principle to *any* other protester? After listening to the show you can learn more about John's story:Website: https://www.johnstrand.com/Twitter: @JohnStrandUSABook: @PatriotPlea00:00Understanding January 6th: Myths and Realities01:54The Role of the Justice System04:10Personal Background and Political Awakening06:54The Freedom Rally and Activism09:30January 6th: The Day of the Capitol Incident12:18The Narrative of the Rally and March14:40Government Response and Security Failures17:29Reflections on Accountability and Future Implications21:39The Super Bowl Analogy: Crowd Dynamics and Expectations23:09Chaos at the Capitol: The Columbus Doors25:19Inside the Capitol: A Bystander's Perspective27:47The Aftermath: Realization of Legal Consequences30:07FBI's Most Wanted: The Unexpected Turn31:41The SWAT Team Assault: A Terrifying Experience34:38Four Days of Silence: Detention Without Charges36:26Common Treatment: The Reality for January 6 Protesters38:11Weaponization of Government: A Call to Awareness42:35Weaponization of Government Power46:58The January 6th Protests: A Double Standard47:30Legal Charges and the Justice System01:01:07Sentencing and Political Critique01:03:10Exoneration and Moving ForwardShow Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

The Biden Legacy in Foreign Affairs
As the Biden administration winds down, the mainstream/corporate media is assessing the impact of his presidency and the legacy he leads. Unfortunately, the media is largely whitewashing that legacy - largely concluding that Biden may have made mistakes but was always acting with noble intentions to promote freedom and a "rules based order" around the world. Substack writer "The Dissident" had a different take and joins Zipcode Zero to discuss the legacy Biden leaves. Five Reasons the Democrats Lost
Donald Trump and the Republican Party pulled off a pretty remarkable win on Tuesday. Not only did Trump sweep almost every swing state and clinch a popular vote win, he made substantial gains or outright victories with almost every demographic group in the country. How did Trump do it? Or to put it another way, how did Democrats fuck this up?There are a lot of different explanations being bantered - so allow me to jump in with my take. I think it largely comes down to five key issues:The EconomyImmigrationWoke BullshitForeign Policy - Gaza and UkraineThe Messaging SuckedToday we are joined by political analyst Jake Morgenstern to break it all down.Twitter: @morgenstern2112Original post: https://kevinmaley.substack.com/p/five-reasons-why-democrats-lostShow Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

Sean Dempsey Returns! A libertarian perspective on the election
Sean Dempsey is an acclaimed author, entrepreneur and Libertarian Party activist. In this conversation, Sean Dempsey discusses his background in the Libertarian Party, his views on the current political landscape, and the moral framework of libertarianism. He expresses disenchantment with the political choices available, particularly in the context of the upcoming elections. Dempsey emphasizes the importance of free speech and the dangers of censorship, particularly in relation to recent political events. He critiques both major political parties for their roles in curtailing individual liberties and discusses the insidious nature of corporate cronyism in America. The conversation also touches on employee rights, corporate control, and the historical context of child labor laws, ultimately advocating for a free market approach to these issues. In this conversation, Sean Dempsey and Kevin Maley explore the unintended consequences of legislation, the evolving nature of the security state, and the political polarization surrounding it. Finally, they make predictions for the upcoming election, highlighting the potential outcomes and implications for the future. You can find Sean's new book "The Investor's Warp Whistles" at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Investors-Warp-Whistles-Financial-Investing-ebook/dp/B0DFW58HNSTwitter: @realseandChapters:00:00Introduction to Sean Dempsey02:08Political Disenchantment and Voting Decisions04:35Understanding Libertarianism09:33Libertarian Perspectives on Foreign Policy14:31The Importance of Free Speech19:30Censorship and Its Implications24:20Corporate Power and Libertarian Views35:08Corporate Power and Freedom of Contract35:59Free Speech and Employment Rights38:58Corporate Surveillance and Employee Rights41:09The Evolution of Labor Rights45:53The Role of Government in Labor Relations48:02Child Labor and Economic Policies54:44The Security State and Political Shifts01:10:26The Importance of War Declarations01:12:10The Consequences of War Authorizations01:15:54Historical Context of War Declarations01:18:03The Role of the Federal Reserve in War01:21:56The National Security State and Proxy Wars01:25:02The Nature of International Relations01:27:19The Future of American Politics01:29:45Predictions for the Upcoming Election01:40:13Closing Thoughts and Book PromotionTranscript:Show Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

All About Germany with James Hawes
The Federal Republic of Germany is a country with a long and rich history. It’s a country that is best known in the West as central to the dominant geopolitical struggles of the 20th century – namely the two World Wars and the Cold War. Today, it is one of the largest economies in the world and the economic powerhouse of Europe – having risen from the ashes of destruction and an artificial division that lasted nearly 50 years. Or was it artificial division? Was it perhaps instead the case that the fault lines within the state we know today as Germany date back to Roman times? And that those fault lines can help understand everything from the disbursement of the reformation to the rise of the Nazis? To explore those questions and more, I am joined today by the acclaimed writer and historian James Hawes – author of “The Shortest History of Germany”, an international bestseller that covers over 2,000 years of history. On the show James and I discuss a range of topics, including:How Britain inadvertently set up Prussia to conquer its neighbors and proclaim a German Empire in the 19th centuryHow that German Empire became the center of arts, sciences, economics and philosophy before the First World WarWhy Germany set its eyes to the East as a focal point for expansion in both World WarsHow one half of Germany was able to bounce so quickly back from destruction after 1945 to overtake every other European economyWhat the Ukraine War and the rise of the AfD mean for the future of GermanAnd moreJames Hawes grew up in Gloucestershire, Edinburgh and Shropshire. He took a First in German at Hertford College, Oxford, then did a postgrad theatre studies in Cardiff, Wales. Having failed as an actor, he worked as an English teacher in Spain. In 1985-6 he was in charge of CADW excavations at the now-UNESCO World Heritage site of Blaenavon Ironworks. He took a PhD on Nietzsche and German literature 1900-1914 at University College, London 1987-90, then lectured in German at Maynooth University (Ollscoil Mhá Nuad) in Ireland between 1989 and 1991 before doing so at Sheffield University and Swansea University.James has published six novels, all with Jonathan Cape. He turned to creative non-fiction with a Kafka anti-biography, Excavating Kafka (2008) which became the subject of a BBC documentary. In 2015, Englanders and Huns was shortlisted for the Paddy Power Political Books of the Year 2015. The Shortest History of Germany, published in May 2017, reached #2 in the Sunday Times bestseller charts in April 2018, being pipped for #1 only by Noah Yuval Harari. The Shortest History of England appeared in October 2020 and reached #4 in the Times bestseller charts in July 2021.James has reviewed and/or written for every UK broadsheet, on topics from DIY to Prince Philip. His journalistic high-points to date were the cover-story for The New Statesman in September 2017 and the long read The England Delusion in Prospect in August 2021; this was publicly described by Prof Ciaran Martin, CB, founding Chief Executive of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, as “a really brilliant essay on the historical origins of UK constitutional tensions”. He has appeared on Radio 4 Today, Channel 4 News, Sky News and GB News.In 2022, he was “series story consultant” and key on-screen commentator in the eight-part BBC TV series “Art that Made Us”. He also wrote the accompanying book. His next book will be The Shortest History of Ireland. If you like the show, please remember to hit like, subscribe and share. The New York Times' W.J. Hennigan on the Risk of Nuclear War
“Today, every inhabitant of this planet must contemplate the day when this planet may no longa be habitable. Every man, woman and child lives under a nuclear sword of Damocles, hanging by the slenderest of threads, capable of being cut at any moment by accident or miscalculation or by madness. " - John F. Kennedy, 1961For over half a century, from the end of the Second World War to the turn of the millennium, avoiding nuclear war has been a key pillar of American foreign policy – guided by arms agreements, communication and common sense. But today, many of those controls have faded away or ceased to exist – and the Bullet of Atomic Scientists – has warned we’re closer to the nuclear precipice than we have ever been before. 90 seconds to midnight, to use their terminology. In fact in one of the most recent near misses, in the steppes of Eastern Europe, U.S. intelligence officials estimated that in the fall of 2022 it came down to the flip of a coin as to whether or not Russia would use a tactical nuclear weapon to stave off a Ukrainian offensive. So how did we get here? Why has the fear of nuclear catastrophe faded from the public imagination even as the threat has increased? And what the hell happened in Ukraine that brought us so close to the edge? Today I am joined by The New York Times' W.J. Hennigan to discuss.Bill, as he goes by, is serving as the lead writer for an ambitious, NYT series on nuclear threats and the challenges our world faces in combating proliferation. Bill has deep expertise covering the U.S. military and national security issues. He has reported from more than two dozen countries across five continents, covering war, the arms trade and the lives of American service members.Bill come to the Times from Time magazine, where he was most recently a senior correspondent. In 2021, he received the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on National Defense for his series on the role of the U.S. military throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year he was part of a reporting team that received the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for Washington Correspondence on the Jan. 6 attack and its aftermath. Before joining Time in 2017, Bill worked for more than eight years at The Los Angeles Times, where he covered the Pentagon and the defense industry. He has earned several awards and citations, including the Associated Press Media Editors Award for international perspective and the National Press Club’s Michael A. On Israel and Palestine with Historian Zach Foster
We’re now in two months of the Israel-Gaza War and after a brief ceasefire, the fighting has erupted again. I think its hard to understand this current conflict without understanding the history of Israel and Palestine, and how it led to where we are today To help with that understanding, today’s guest is Dr Zachary Foster Zach is a historian of Palestine, having gotten his PhD in Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He’s a distinguished fellow at the Rutgers Center for Security, Race and Rights. He also runs the PalestineNexus.com, which offers an invaluable newsletter, accessible research and even courses you can enroll to learn more. Zach and I go through a brief history of Israel and Palestine over the course of the 20th century, including why Jews emigrated to Palestine, the impact of the 1917 Balfour Declarationand why Palestine effectively became a british colony that was critical to the imperial interests of the empire, the post World War II partition of Mandatory Palestine, the humanitarian catastrophe that came out of the 1948 and how Israel came to occupy the West Bank and Gaza in 1967. We also talk about the special relationship between the U.S. and Israel and dive into the horrific conditions of life in Gaza today. It’s a lot to cover but Zach was the right man for this job – his deep knowledge of the history is incredible and the insights he offered made for a really substantive, meaningful discussion. On Liberals and Liberalism Robert Kuttner
In an economy with steady growth, low unemployment and core inflation down to 3.2%, why do so many Americans say that the Biden Administration has left them worse off economically? How is Trump winning or tied with voters under 30? And why are the Democrats, once the party of the common man, continuing to lose the support the working class, not just among white voters but increasingly among non-white voters? How Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement with Freddie deBoer
Over the last decade we’ve seen the rise of a wide range of social justice movements, from Occupy Wall Street to Me Too to Black Lives Matter. Where are those movements now and what impact have they had? In his new book “How the Elites Ate the Social Justice Movement” Freddie DeBoer explores these questions. Freddie argues that in the digital age, social movements flare up but then lose steam through a lack of tangible goals, the inherent moderating effects of our established institutions and political parties, and the lack of any real grassroots movement in contemporary America. Hidden beneath the rhetoric of the oppressed and the symbolism of the downtrodden lies the inconvenient fact that those doing the organizing, messaging, protesting, and campaigning are predominantly drawn from this country’s more upwardly mobile educated classes. DeBoer lays out an alternative vision for how society’s winners can contribute to social justice movements without taking them over, and how activists and their organizations can become more resistant to the influence of elites, nonprofits, corporations, and political parties. He argues that only by organizing around class rather than empty gestures can we begin the hard work of changing minds and driving policy. In my conversation with Freddie we discuss his takes on why the Bernie Sanders campaigns failed, illiberalism and intolerance among the activist left, the quiet expiration of the Child Tax Credit, why Freddie favors a much more open immigration policy, and more. I hope you enjoy the discussion. Please remember to like, follow and share the show. Enjoy---Bio:Fredrik deBoer is the author of The Cult of Smart, a book about meritocracy, education, and the potential for a more humane society. It was selected by New York magazine as one of its Ten Best Books of 2020. He holds a PhD in English from Purdue University, where he concentrated on assessment of student learning. He lives in Brooklyn with his girlfriend and his cat Suavecito.Book:https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/How-Elites-Ate-the-Social-Justice-Movement/Fredrik-deBoer/9781668016015Substack:https://substack.com/@freddiedeboerShow Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

A View from the West Bank with Dalia Hatuqa
On October 7, Israel suffered a brutal attack as Hamas militants from Gaza rampaged across the south, massacring up to 1,500 Jews and taking 200 more captive.Israel’s response has been to unleash a massive bombing campaign on the Gaza strip, home to 2.2 million people who have nowhere to go to escape the carnage. As of this recording, the bombardment of Gaza continues, with thousands dead and up to a million people displaced in what has become a complete humanitarian catastrophe. To get perspective on what is going on, yesterday I spoke to Dalia Hatuqa, a journalist based out of the West Bank, which Israel has been occupying along with Gaza since 1967. Dalia specializes in Israeli/Palestinian affairs and has long covered the conflict. We spoke about what the perspective is from the West Bank, what's unfolding in Gaza, the impact of a near-sixty-year occupation and prospects for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.Twitter@DaliaHatuqaWebsitehttps://www.daliahatuqa.com/Show Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

The State of Republican Politics with Taylor Svehlak
While all eyes were on Congress this week, the Republican presidential primary continued to unfold across the country. I’ve found that primary a little bizarre and a little boring – especially the last debate. With Trump ahead by 40 or 50 points it seems like the race is already over. But I’ve been wrong before. To bring in some outside perspective, today’s guest is Taylor Svehlak – a friend of the show. Taylor is a gun rights advocate and an old school conservative, though a classical liberal in the tradition of Adam Smith and John Stuart Mill. Taylor and I discuss the recent GOP debate, the state of the race, Ukraine, what the general election might look like and the main issues on voters minds this election. Speaking as someone who’s very much on the left, I always think it’s fun to discuss politics with people outside my own bubble – so very much appreciate Taylor coming back on the show and sharing is perspectives. As always please remember to like, subscribe and share the show Taylor's Twitter@Taysway2AShow Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt

Covering U.S. Foreign Policy with Liam Cosgrove
Liam Cosgrove is a DC-based correspondent for The Grayzone, an independent news website dedicated to original investigative journalism and analysis on politics and empire. With much of the mainstream media being pretty aggressively pro-war in its coverage of Ukraine, Liam has stood out for pressing both the Administration as well as Members of Congress on the conflict in a way that tries to get to the deeper truth of what is going on. We talk about Liam’s career trajectory and what it’s like to be the odd man out at these briefings, the Ukraine War, the presidential election, political influences and a little bit about the JFK assassination. Liam comes from a bit of a libertarian background while I look at most things from the left, but we found a lot of agreement when it comes to US foreign policy and strong concern about the risks for escalation with the Ukraine War/Russia, up to and including nuclear war.Twitter@cosgrove_ivWebsitehttps://thegrayzone.com/Show Info-----Twitter@[email protected] -----MusicUrban Deer Hunt: https://linktr.ee/urbandeerhunt
