Chili staat dit jaar stil bij de staatgreep, die plaatsvond op 11 september 1973. De socialistische president Salvador Allende kwam daarbij om het leven en de rechtse Augusto Pinochet greep de macht. Hoewel Pinochet al sinds 2006 dood is, zorgt zijn dictatuur nu nog voor verdeeldheid in het land; arm versus rijk, links versus rechts, martelaar versus beul. Voor correspondent Boris van der Spek is het een thema dat in alle gesprekken en reportages terugkomt. Hij maakte de documentaire De open wonden van Chili – en stuitte daarbij op een onwaarschijnlijke vriendschap.
