Les fonts d’aquesta recomanació expliquen que els nivells d’aquesta substància en sèrum no aporten cap informació útil ni per al diagnòstic, classificació o pronòstic de l’encefalopatia hepàtica en els pacients amb malaltia hepàtica crònica. I rarament la concentració d’aquest amoni es correlaciona amb la gravetat de la malaltia. La mateixa recomanació també la trobem al choosing wisely italià, aquest cop en les 5 recomanacions de laboratori i patologia clínica. I el 2017 també se’n va publicar un Things we do for no reason.
