Ayahnya kerap dipanggil dengan panggilan "Buya", namanya Abdul Malik Karim Abdullah, tatkal berpulang dari daratan Mekkah di usia muda guna menuntut ilmu dan naik haji, disematkanlah "Haji" di awalan namanya. Karena terkesan cukup panjang, maka orang-orang menyingkatnya menjadi "HAMKA". Sekarang kita lebih mengenal beliau sebagai Buya Hamka.
