In this episode of Pitch Perfect the Podcast, we discuss: Ballon d’Or winners since 2000, and Messi vs Ronaldo debate.

Segment 1: Ballon d’or winners since 2000

Obviously, when talking about the best players ever, you have to begin with Messi and Ronaldo. 

No matter your opinion on the goat, you have to recognize both players as the two best of all time, and respect both as great players. 

Obviously there is an endless list of the greats, but so the episode doesn’t go on for hours, I will list and talk about the Ballon’ dor winners since 2000

2000- Figo

  • 2nd Portiguese to ever win, played great for barca and real madrid, played great at Euro 2000 helping portugal to semi-finals

2001- Michael Owen

  • 4th english player to win, won 5 titles in 2001, UEFA cup, European Supercup, League Cup, FA Cup, Community Shield

2002- OG Ronaldo

  • Won mostly because of his performance in world cup

2003- Pavel Nedvěd

  • Won Serie A and Supercoppa Italiana, won because of his performance in later stages of Champions League, very controversial, many thinking Henry deserved it

2004- Andriy Shevchenko

  • 3rd Ukranian, top scored Serie A, Serie A title, 

2005- Ronaldinho

  • Won for great play and winning La Liga

2006- Fabio Cannavaro

  • Won for performances throughout season and world cup, rare defender

2007- Kaka

  • Won Champions League Semi-Final over Ronaldo- pretty much giving him the award, then won final

2008- Ronaldo

  • Won Champions League and Premier League, 31 league goals, 8 champions league goals

2009- Messi

  • Won La Liga, Champions League, Copa del Rey, beat Ronaldo in Champions League Final

2010- Messi

  • 34 goals in La Liga, La Liga player of season, controversial, people thought Xavi should’ve won

2011- Messi

  • 53 goals in 55 games, Won La Liga, Won Champions league

2012- Messi

  • Record 91 goals, only won Copa del Rey

2013- Ronaldo

  • 66 goals, people felt ribbery should have won

2014- Ronaldo

  • 61 goals, Champions League win, Club World Cup, European Super Cup, Copa del rey

2015- Messi

  • 52 goals 26 assist, Won Copa del Rey, La Liga, Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, European Super Cup and Club World Cup

2016- Ronaldo

51 goals, 17 assist, Champions League and European Cup winner, big champions league goals, Euro 2016 winner

2017- Ronaldo

  • Champions League Win, La Liga
