Brett from Cemeteries

from Our City, Our Podcast · host City of Winnipeg

Brett Shenback is the Cemeteries Administrator within the Planning, Property & Development department. He began his career in urban planning and city building for those living in Winnipeg. One path led to another, and now he plans for those no longer with us. There are three cemeteries that he and his team manage: St. Vital, Transcona, and Brookside. While they all hold significance, Brookside is the showstopper and a National Historic Site. It is home to one of the largest Fields of Honour in Canada, and includes a Tear Drop islet, Stone of Remembrance, and Cross of Sacrifice. There are several other monuments on the grounds, each telling its own special story. Brett talks about different cultural practices, burial traditions, and innovations like natural or green burials. He encourages everyone to think about how they want to be laid to rest and the peace of mind that decision can bring. If you find yourself near any of the city cemeteries, take a walk through and enjoy the serenity of the space. This podcast is recorded in Treaty One Territory, the home and traditional lands of the Anishinaabe, Ininew, and Dakota peoples, and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. We acknowledge that our drinking water comes from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, in Treaty Three Territory.   What programs and services impact you the most?
