Do You Love to Win or Hate to Lose? Interview with former World Boxing Champion Billy Shwaer

from Invest in You · host Fredrik Sandvall, Ivan Sandvall, Charlie Sandvall

Listen in to today’s podcast as Fredrik and Ivan are joined by former world boxing champion, personal performance coach and motivational speaker Billy Shwaer. With over 23 years of boxing experience, it is safe to say that Billy knows what he is talking about, together they discuss the mindset of a professional fighter, how the true test of your character is somebody who can show up when they do not feel like it, and why investment in your personal development should never stop. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are two fighting mindsets. The first is that you love to win and this encourages your need to be successful in the sport. The second mindset is that you truly hate to lose, this hatred spurs fighters on to become the best at their sport as they cannot stand the thought of losing. There is no right or wrong mindset, people have become champions with both mindsets.   It takes courage to step into the fighting ring and try yourself out. It is admirable of anybody who finds the courage to have a go and step into the ring. You will find yourself having to overcome that fear all the time.   Your true test of character has to show up even in the face of not feeling like it. If you don’t feel like going to training and you would rather have a day off, you have to go beyond yourself and find something within you that carries you forward even in the toughest of times. There are no hiding places in fighting, you have to summon something up from within in yourself. It is a huge test of your strength and willingness in the face of suffering pain and defeat to continue and fight for victory.   The biggest investment that you can make is the investment in yourself. Investing in yourself means investing your own time, effort and money into your personal development. You could have spent thousands of pounds investing in training programmes, courses or personal hobbies to develop yourself, but you should never stop investing in yourself.     BEST MOMENTS “I had to find a way to prove, cover-up and survive being weak, that was why I became a boxer” “It was tough getting punched in the face.” “It is euphoric and amazing.” “I want to be free, I don’t want to be tied down.”   ABOUT THE GUEST Billy Schwer is a former British, Commonwealth, European & World Boxing Champion who is now a personal performance coach.
