Ep. 75 | Let's Talk about Parkinson's Disease

from EPAGA University · host Inga Lake & Julie Brubaker

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominately the dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra. Symptoms generally develop slowly over years, and the progression of these symptoms is often a bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease (Parkinson's Foundation). While there currently is no cure for PD, researchers are working diligently to develop new technologies to make living with PD a little bit more bearable. Join us this week as we discuss the symptoms, causes, treatments, and advancing research surrounding Parkinson's, as well as 10 early signs of PD and how to proceed after receiving a diagnosis. Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
