Episode #282: Nervous System Rollercoaster from Screen Time

from Tea Time w/Amie & Bev · host Amie Wade

In today’s fast-paced culture, many of us scroll through endless 30–90 second video clips without realizing the toll it takes on our bodies and minds. Each clip delivers a sharp spike of dopamine when it entertains us, and often cortisol when it agitates us, then followed by the inevitable crash. This constant rollercoaster of highs and lows overstimulates the nervous system and disrupts the parasympathetic branch, the part of us designed to bring calm, rest, and repair.  Think of it like slamming on the gas and the brakes every few seconds. No wonder we feel restless, unfocused, and burned out after what was supposed to be “just a few minutes” of scrolling. Over time, this cycle trains the brain to crave quick hits instead of deeper, more nourishing experiences.  The antidote? More human interaction, intentional connection and less screen time. Sharing a laugh, having an unhurried conversation, or simply being present with someone allows the nervous system to settle into balance. Instead of riding constant chemical spikes, we move into steady rhythms of safety, joy, and belonging.  By choosing less electronics and more interactions, we aren’t just reducing screen time, we’re giving our minds and bodies permission to breathe, reset, and thrive.  May this conversation be beneficial to your life journey.
