Episode 33: House Republicans Impeach Mayorkas, U.S. Troops Killed in Jordan, Deep Dive on Restricting LNG Exports, And More

from Out of Order · host Ben Maher and Anthony Buono

This week's current events: House Republicans are impeaching Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas for allegations of dereliction of duty in enforcing border security A drone strike by Iran-backed militias killed three American troops in Jordan, leaving us to wonder what President Biden's response will be Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban clashes with the EU over funding Ukraine The Republican national anti-abortion agenda is extreme Q4 GDP numbers reinforce the fact that the U.S. economy has had the best pandemic recovery out of any peer country A hedge fund manager looks to repeal Washington state's landmark climate law at the ballot this November China's largest real estate developer, Evergrande, will be dismantled after a ruling by a Hong Kong court. In this week's deep dive, we use the Biden administration's recent announcement of a pause on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports as an opportunity to analyze not only that policy, but the effects that restricting fossil fuel production generally could have on climate change. Will restricting LNG exports make a difference, or will countries simply get natural gas elsewhere? Will they turn to coal, which emits even more carbon when burned? Will they be incentivized to build out more clean energy infrastructure? Should the Biden administration consider similar policy relating to oil and coal? We discuss all of those questions here.
