Episode 55: After Ian

from GROW by Design · host Jacob Godar

This is a sort of “part two” from last week. Today we are going to talk about *everything* that has happened since we hit the “stop record” button on our “Before Ian” episode.
But first, happy first birthday to the GROW by Design podcast! We have come a long way and look forward to continuing to evolve and share our lives with complete authenticity in a way that we hope can add value to YOUR life.We kick off this episode *right* where we left off - from leaving the office the day before the hurricane, knowing that reality (and a hurricane) is going to hit as soon as we go home. We cover last minute prepping and the somber realization that the storm was *not* going to turn or decrease in intensity, then we get into the day of Hurricane Ian.We discuss our “hurricane bubble,” losing power and connection with the outside world, and the devastating aftermath…Jacob recounts the morning after the hurricane when neighbors went from strangers to helpers & friends. We talk accounting for our team after the storm, getting boots on the ground to start cleaning up, showing our kids what people do in times like this, what we will do when the next hurricane comes our way, plus more.We wrap up the episode by announcing the postponement of Training Day, which was due to happen on October 14th, and why we were torn on postponing it at all - plus options for ticket holders.GROW Comm public registration opens again soon. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
