Premiering in 2012, the same year as the HBO series Girls, it was difficult to not draw comparisons with Noah Baumbach's film Frances Ha. Heck, 11 years later it's still easy to connect the two. Both are about the post college lives of a female New Yorker trying to figure out her place in the world and in the lives of her kith and kin. It's easy to dismiss Frances Ha, particularly if you found Lena Dunham's character Hannah on Girls to be a bit grating. But I urge you to put your prejudices aside and give Frances Ha a chance. Greta Gerwig, who has since gone on to write and direct stunning films on her own, collaborated with Baumbach to create a flawed character, but one who is easy to root for. Frances is the antithesis of Hannah. She has an unstoppable forward momentum which ends up making for a really inspiring film. Shit, I'm a 50-year-old Midwesterner and this twenty something heroine inspired me to kick my forward momentum into a higher gear.
