Green Iguanas Invade Pingtung

from News For Kids · host ICRT

I'm in Pingtung today! It's sunny and… Wow! What is that? It's a Green Iguana! Wow! It's huge! It looks like a little dinosaur! Listen, I like iguanas, but they are not supposed to live in Taiwan. These kinds of iguanas live in South America, and it's never a good idea to take animals to a place where they don't come from. These iguanas in Taiwan are invaders! It's true! Someone probably brought baby iguanas to Taiwan to be pets, but then the iguanas grew up and became super big lizards! Some owners said "Aiyah! This iguana is huge! It's scary!" So they let them go out into the wild. The iguanas like Pingtung because it's hot and sunny. But the iguanas are bad for the environment in Pingtung. They are hungry eaters! The farmers won't be able to make money if iguanas keep eating their fruit and veggies. So, now in Pingtung, people are trying to catch these invaders and take them out of Taiwan. Sorry, iguanas. You're cool, but you don't belong in Taiwan. ________________________________ Vocabulary 綠鬣蜥是外來物種,對本土農業造成很大的損害。 1. live 居住 Where do iguanas usually live? This Impact Studios production is a collaboration with the Governor family, UTS Faculty of Law and Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research. The Last Outlaws teamKatherine Biber - UTS Law Professor and Chief InvestigatorAunty Loretta Parsley - Great-granddaughter of Jimmy Governor and the Governor Family Historian Leroy Parsons - Governor descendant, Narrator and Co-WriterKaitlyn Sawrey - Host, Writer and Senior ProducerFrank Lopez - Writer, Managing Next Generation Energy Systems Cambridge University Background Stakeholders working with energy systems have to make complex decisions formulated from risk-based assessments about the future. The move towards more renewables in our energy systems complicates matters even further, requiring the development of an integrated power grid and continuous and steady transformation of the UK power system. Network flows must be managed reliably under uncertain demands, uncertain supply, emerging network technologies and possible failures and, further, prices in related markets can be highly volatile. Mathematicians working with engineers and economists, can make significant contributions to address such issues, by helping to develop fit-for-purpose models for next generation energy systems. These interdisciplinary approaches are looking to address a range of associated problems, including modelling, prediction, simulation, control, market and mechanism design and optimisation.
